Just some side notes, the "Last of The Mohican" club was way over size for eastern woodland war clubs and also made of balsa. I have handled a lot of originals in my research and almost all of them were made of maple and ash and are average 1" thick and 22 to 24 " inches long. The Plains style are about the size of the one in the movie as they were used on horseback. A real nice job on your interpetation.

explaining the differences in yours compared to the movie was very insightful. thank you so much. i think id make one out of hickory and use a saw blade and cut the spike out of that.

Suggestion: For the decorative tacs, don't use cardboard as a placement holder. Use thin Styrofoam instead. That way you don't have to pull them out and renail them in the holes. Just pound them in part way and break away the foam underneath and finish nailing.

Thanks! It's one of my favorite movies and I've wanted one of these since I was a kid. I was pleasantly surprised by the color I got using just alumilite dye and denatured alcohol. This was also my first time using a Tru-Oil finish and it was really easy to use.

It’s easier to reshape and repurpose antique knives. Forging is all well and good but a lot of effort. Your build came out looking amazing either way.

Very, very cool war club. Great job!😊 I was going to ask you where to source that blade you used but then upon watching the whole video (always watch the WHOLE video before asking questions kids! ) your blade is probably made of unobtainium and Ill never find one (and I don't know your Dad) . If I'm wrong, somebody tell me where to buy one. Finally, your comment at the end, "is that not good enough for you?"..hey, if it's good enough for you, that is all that matters. Trolls and nit pickers can always give making the exact copy a shot if they are so disturbed that yours isn't a carbon copy of the movie prop 😅.

Ive allways wanted to make one from a longboard skateboard because it would be stronger and lighter. It would need 2 boards if you wanted a spike set up. Dude can you make one from a longboard?
I'm sure it's possible, I've seen a lot of things made from skateboards but I haven't tried it out myself yet. It sounds interesting though.
Yeah it does sound interesting. I think its strength would be im the boards glue pressed layers. Being Light probably more of a punch due to inertia and aerodynamics. If you ever deside to make one that would make a awsome video.
Long boards are essentially thinly laminated wood, it would be like making it out of good plywood. Or bad plywood depending on quality of long board so why mess up a long board?
Where did you get your measurements/template from
I looked at pictures from the film and from other gun stock war clubs online and kind of guessed at the design. I also had to make it fit the piece of wood that I had. So I traced out the board on a big sheet of paper, then drew out the design so that it would fit. I actually wanted it to have a more pronounced angle but it wouldn't fit on the board I had.

Thank you! I haven’t made these to sell so I’m not sure what I’d sell them for. This one isn’t functional because the wood is too soft and the spearhead isn’t mounted well enough for actual use. With that being said I still would t want to get hit by it.

Well, I'm going to "address it in the comments" even though you said you were going to address it so we didn't have to, but technically you're wrong on both placements of the blade. His blade wasn't below the angle (like yours) or above it (as you incorrectly said it was). His blade was placed at the apex of the angle. The reason they placed it there (at the apex) was to maximize it's utilation as a throwing weapon. You're more apt to stick the blade while throwing if the blade is coming out of the apex of the angle (giving you contact with both angles) rather than with the blade sticking out of only one angle (above or below the angle) which only gives you contact if you hit the throw at one angle (or, landing the throw on one side). Or, to describe it another way is to say that having the blade come straight out of the apex gives you many more degrees of radial contact to make the blade stick while throwing. It's basically the entire purpose of having the angle in the club at all. Pretty amazing that Native Americans could utilize somewhat complex geometric mathematical theories in order to make a much more proficient weapon (or tool) and here hundreds of years later, you, a 'civilized' "paleface" still didn't figure it out. ;-) :-P So much for the "savages" moniker, eh? With all that said, it's still a great looking decorative piece you made there man. Kudos. And FYI, I'm a civilized paleface too, so I'm not attacking you specifically. Its more a comment on the societal view as a whole. I just think the Native Americans never got enough credit for their intellectual prowess which shows itself clearly in little details like this.
Thanks, from what I saw in the movie, his blade was above the apex, but his club was also at a different angle than mine. I would have made mine more like his, but that shape wouldn't fit on the piece of wood I had on hand. So yes, I made mine based on the movie, but not exact. Also if you look at historical references you'll see clubs in all shapes and sizes.
Do you think making one from oak would work?
Oak would actually work better than the maple I used on this one. I used curly maple because it was pretty and would look good hanging on my wall, but if I actually tried using this thing it would probably break. Oak on the other hand is much harder and would stand up to a lot more abuse.
@@JoePierceMaker i know that the seneca native Americans would use curly maple and hard maple to make their root ball clubs. Your club is not a hammer, but it would work with say a fresh deer carcass.
True, there are species of maple that are pretty hard. This particular piece is soft maple, I should have been more clear on that.

You put a longer blade on something that's supposed to be hit on very hard. Not smart. You put cuts into the blade which will 100% snap if used like it's made. How silly
I stated in the video that this club is not functional and will be hung on my wall as decoration. If I wanted it to be functional I would have made it from harder wood, and pinned the spearhead in place. The spearhead is a replica from the time period, it may not be perfect for the job, but people in that time had to make due with what they had. Thanks for watching though.
