I'm in awe over your precise domino line-ups. When attaching the two main section together, getting 24-domino's to line-up and assemble after being glued, the first time, is simply amazing!
With kids being kids, there will be tussles in those beds. It was hard to tell but the inside edges of the bed frames appear to be pretty sharp. Seems like a major rounding of those edges would pretty much 'kid-proof' them. As a former child bunk bedder along with today's technology I would have made provisions for the installation of low voltage led lighting strips with a dimmer switch for each bed.
A nice well thought out project. I had built bunks for our camp about a year ago and the bottom slats I just laid in so that we could pull them out to clean under the mattress. Similar construction to what you have just fancy enough for a camp though.
Incredible Work. About 35 yrs ago, my Father built 2 sets of triple Bunk Beds. They were friggn Awesome and we still have them today. There are 6 Boys and 1 girl in my Family. Both beds were in 1 room in a row home in Philadelphia and my Spoiled Ass sister had her own room. The good ole days.
Ya there is a lot of good work in that area. I live in New Palestine but most of my jobs are with 45min or less. And I mainly remodel stairs. But I will do some built in stuff from time to time.
You do amazing work and I love watching your stuff. Do you ever get the opportunity to get some video or pics of the projects when they’re finished by the painters? I’d love to see some of your work once it’s painted and complete. Thanks for the awesome content.
Nice project and great craftsmanship ... did you design it too?. How would you price something like this? Would it be a time and materials? or a lump sum? I know those are some personal questions but for those starting out its always good to hear from someone as accomplished as you. Have you ever thought of starting an "online school" where your might teach some courses on the above mentioned topics. I think you would be surprised how many students you might get. Anyway, great job once again and thank you for sharing your experiences with those of us not quite as brave as you. Cheers, Gus
Do you have a video where you mention what these poplar (looks like poplar) glued-up boards are? Are they a commercial product? Sheets or normal board widths?
@@InsiderCarpentry Thanks. That's not something I've seen in the box stores or lumber yards here in MD. Looks like it would be super stable compared to the usual flat-sawn poplar.
@@InsiderCarpentry Maybe that's something for the future based on your video you did about making money and growing money and all that. I saw a video the other day where a diy youtuber broke down his earnings from videos for 2020 and he'd made more than $45,000 from selling project plans on ETSY.
would be nice to have hidden drawers under each step. or as we did, a roll out blanket/ toy box concealed at the end under the stairs (also makes a great fort if the box can roll right out)
Seems like a waste of space under the stairs. Also, the heavy material would be very good for kids weighing 350 lbs. each. Kind of like overkill on the dimensions of the materials/
Little bit of a random question... do you only use your dewalt lights? I like to wire temporary fixtures into the ceiling boxes when I can so the lighting is closer to what it will be when the house is finished. I still use a couple work lights in darker areas but I've had good success with temp. fixtures
@@InsiderCarpentry Well, that obviously works for you, your work is top notch. I'm half blind in broad daylight so I try to get as much light as I can haha
The homeowners missed an opportunity to put some electrical in, would be nice to have some light for those dark bedside table/shelves or at least an outlet.
Beautiful work man. Those t-brace pieces add a ton of strength to those slats. My only worry is the non-braced slats, especially since this is finger joint lumber. Do you feel the bed be strong enough if a 200lb dad jumps in there to play with the kids?
@@InsiderCarpentry I’ve gone through one myself (1x4 solid pine slats) which is why I asked LOL but the rest of it it sure as hell wasn’t built like yours! Awesome work again man.
@@InsiderCarpentry Thank you very much. I looked at our wood storage and we had some pieces left. I run a piece threw the tablesaw and planer and it felt very nice to work with.
That's a smart looking bunk bed build. never seen the stairs assembled like that before. Was that your design or the clients? Lots of thought gone into the creation of that piece of work
Man i love the way u do thing and explain clearly without all the babble. i watched this a while back to get some sound advice for my first queen size bunk set, that that now needs to mach distressed barn beam we i did for ceilings ..well our work shop burnt down a few weeks ago total loss, so Iv been trying to do production in the storage shop with no festools, track/ stopsaw ect. just seeing good clamps makes me envious. Im praying the Domino arrives before i start that job. Do U think a similar build would be stable enough without fastening to the wall and ceiling? Was thinking maybe adding some extra bracing under the stairs to stiffen up it up? Iv never used the Domino on anything this big to know how they hold up to large loads. Any advice would help. Cheers
great work! are the kids older that you didn't put rails on top bed? Also, you wouldn't happen to have a plans for it? I want to build one for my kids, but with the stairs on the opposite side.
Masterful as always! Do you find yourself using a 23g nailer much? Mine is mostly used for base shoe, looking for an excuse to buy the new M12 version :)
Just a question but wondering why you didn’t use some kind of a bolt together knock down fastener? People anymore are not happy with anything long term and would hate to see such fine work trashed by someone deciding they wanted a change later on in life. Great 👍 work excellent craftsmanship.
hi Spencer. how would you go about pricing that job? an estimate of shop time + materials + estimated install time? are your shop charges different from what you charge when you are on site given the costs associated w having a shop? I find the business end of pricing something specialized like this as important as the ability to complete the job satisfactorily. thank you for sharing.
Spencer, I am being asked to build something similar for my wife to have a place for grandkids. Curious what size dominos did you use, from what I could see I think they were 10mm. Great build!
Exact opposite. The whole idea of custom built-ins is that they don't look like a cheap piece of ikea that you can take with you. The value perception is the exact opposite.
Smart idea taking cutting out the drywall. Been there before, but not with a bunk bed. Beautiful job. Do you have to come up with the design? Is this detail in the drawings? Or is this something the builder/owner asks you to do?
Hey I've been following you for a while but somehow missed this video. I'm a finish carpenter too and I actually did some bunk beds awhile ago. Just wanted to know if there's a way to maybe send you some pics, just to see what you think. I wouldn't mind maybe sharing some with with you
I was today years old before I knew that some people have built-in bunk beds. You did a fine job. Great craftsmanship!
I'm in awe over your precise domino line-ups. When attaching the two main section together, getting 24-domino's to line-up and assemble after being glued, the first time, is simply amazing!
It was pucker factor level 10. I sanded the end of some of them to taper them so they would find their alignment easier.
Just looking at the video thumbnail alone, shows the excellent craftsmanship. Thank you for doing these videos
I like the utilization of that little cove area as a bed side table.
I can’t get over the quality you produce. I’ve been trying to find someone to trim my stairs for MONTHS….this project is beautiful
That's beautiful!! Love seeing someone that takes pride in their work!

The stair area would be a nice place to put some clever hidden drawers. That is a super looking unit.
You did a hell of a job on that bunk bed!!! Touché
Stair access clever! And insetting into the wall to provide a straight run for the rails.
A nice well thought out project. I had built bunks for our camp about a year ago and the bottom slats I just laid in so that we could pull them out to clean under the mattress. Similar construction to what you have just fancy enough for a camp though.

Great job, Spenser. I feel sorry for the poor sap that has to take those bunk beds apart, lol. Have a great weekend.
That was designed to stay with the house!
Nothing a heavy hammer can't deal with.
Awesome insight on how to do it right. Thanks, Spencer.

wow man that was a blast of bed!👌👍💪

Thanks for this! Why use PL premium over wood glue for the underside plywood install?
Regular wood glue is too thin. No gap filling properties.

Anything .9mm.
Gonna be so sad when the day comes they tear that out because the kids are no longer little. 😭
That bed is cool enough for grown kids.
I made mine sleep in it anyway and they R all over 8’ tall!
Yeah, I loved my bunk bed with my brother. I think we broke it down when I was 13 and he was 12. Good times though.
Thank you for sharing.
Did you consider the knock-down DF500 connectors? Glueing it up feel a bit drastic for me. It's probably me.
I thought about it but that's about it. I try and keep things lean and simple.
Master! So what exactly is the wood you use for this stuff. What do you ask for when you order? Finger joint? But it looks so clean and smooth
FJ poplar and polar plywood.
do have blue prints for this bed
On the miter folds, did you use plywood or poplar lumber
Very nice..curious why you did not incorporate drawers into the steps
No need to waste money putting drawers where they aren’t needed. That would have been a pain. Large expense for a small amount of storage.
@@InsiderCarpentry You do not know my wife, can never have enough storage :)
Do you recall about how tall these bed frame beams were? Look around 10”.
What about a pinned mortise and tenon? No glue
That would have been really cool.
What type of wood is that? It's gorgeous.

Yes. And yes they’re fine.
how you move that bed? is part of the house now
