I’m not much of a carpenter or building contractor, so I just bought a nice dog house. Turns out it’s a 2,000 plus square foot dog house, with a basement, five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a huge lot for my dog to run and exercise in! He’s kind enough to let my wife, daughter and me live with him in his house!
Imagine how cozy and warm that lil bud must be. Especially when snowing, it's heated, warm lighting just playing with his dog toy or just sleeping. Gotta be the peak of existence
Nah, dogs are pack animals, and prefer to be with their family/pack. If Bailey is relegated to the outdoors, I feel very sad for him/her. They are social creatures, therefore he/she is probably lonely. They'll adapt, and it'll seem like they are happy, but given the choice, dogs want to be with their people, at all times. They'll take what you give, but if it's up to them, they'll be by your side. I'd say to get another dog to keep Bailey company, but don't want another dog living outside, away from its family. Ten degrees is AWFUL. My 6 dogs are all cuddled up on the couch under blankets, waiting for bed time, where they will get in my bed, along with my 6 cats, and I live in Phoenix. My tortoise is in his cage, door open, on his warmer. Tomorrow afternoon, he'll go out the dog door to sunbathe a bit before he grazes on grass until sunset when he comes back in the house, has a snack, then heads to his cage to get on top of his warmer, for the night. Builder dude, do better. Don't have animals, if you don't want them in the house, and part of your life.
@@energeticsoulhealer888 exactly my thoughts. My little puppy is my world and I would go through hell and back for my lil bud. Just like any parent would do for their human kids. The animals on this planet deserves better treatment, humans are awful and disgusting on the inside and out. Animals are just animals they are pure and they are like babies. I’ve been living for 23 years and I used to be pure and open until I’ve seen the nastiest in people
@@FranksfuckingYT exactly. This poor, sweet dog doesn't need a fancy dog house, it needs a family that loves it enough to make it an actual member, and part of, the family. Making it live away is CRUEL ASF. I go to the grocery store and my dogs act like I was gone for months, lol. People value their THINGS more than their loyal dogs who would protect them until their dying breath. Do they shed in the house? You betcha. Get a roomba. Figure it out. Better yet, don't get a dog if you can't love it enough to honor it as a valued member of your pack. The guy didn't even allow Bailey in his workshop when he was building it. I knew the minute he called him/her a "farm dog" that this poor baby wasn't allowed indoors, IN CANADA no less. What a complete DICK.
@@energeticsoulhealer888 I 100000000% agree with you, that’s what’s wrong with people and I hate the fact that it’s majority of people who are like this. The workshop might have been too loud for his ears though 😅 but I couldn’t keep watching the video. He kept saying “dog” I’m sure he has a name. You don’t hear fathers or mothers calling there kid “boy” or “girl” or even “kid”. So what’s up with that? This is what makes me hate people lol but you have the right idea you I like 🤙🏽
You are so funny! When I saw the first line of your comment, I thought you were going to say, "So I could look out the window and see my dog giving me a 'sad-sack' gaze from all-alone in his dog house.
The one thing I thought of that could make your life wayyy easier is make the roof hinge up, so you can access the inside for cleaning, repairs, etc. a lot easier
Did anyone else chuckle when he said the metal roofing was a bit too much for a dog house? Not the heated floor, the deck lighting, the ....🤣🤣🤣Love it!! Lucky doggie.
This is the first damn time I've actually watched a 33 minute video of someone building something fully focused and doing nothing else. The voice over, the builds, the camera shots, explaining what you're doing, the editing, all done so beautifully --- which MATCHES THE DAMN GORGEOUS DOG HOUSE HAHA
Same here , I’m usually doing something else while watching but I watched this start to finish with no stoping I loved how he explained everything and the dog house came out magnificent I would had paid that first my pets 🥰excellent job love his 2nd home
What you spend on your pet is all relative to what you can afford. Paris Hilton spent $374,000 US dollars on her dogs' villa. It's a two-story 300 s/f doggy palace with air conditioning, heating, designer furniture, and a chandelier. That's $509,406 Canadian dollars.
When I was a kid my dad built an insulated doghouse for the family dog too. With a double door of sorts to keep the wind out, and a hinged roof so he could check on the condition of the inside now and then. She loved it and would demand to go outside at night. We did keep her in when it got very cold (also Canada!) - she'd have loved this heated house!
Had a large custom built dog house for my dog as a kid (insulated, easy cleaning, lighting). Dog didn't use it... Rabbits and cats sure loved it though.
The dogs that do like outdoors in Canada tend to prefer digging a dent in the snow and laying in that. Example Husky, Akita, malamute, and most shepherds. Do not bother building a doghouse for any of those. Labs do like a doghouse. Every other furry freak wants to be in the big house.
Me and a friend of mine built one of these for my dogs years ago. It was 8'x4' and 4' tall at the roof peak. The only thing that I think you're missing is elevating the house so it's not sitting in water when the snow melts/rain. We mounted mine on bricks, about a foot off of the ground. I thought I was the only one who went this far for my dogs, so it's nice to see others do the same.
That’s awesome man. Love when people go out their way to build something like this for their bestfriend. It shows you truly love your dog with everything! 💯
I thought something like that too. Don’t know what kind of weather he gets but putting in a concrete foundation is not *that* formidable. Even if it’s just around the edges with sand in the center. Only problem is this was a Winter project, digging frozen ground is nasty, getting concrete to cure… I don’t even know if it is possible. And a Canadian foundation would have to be pretty deep because of the expected lows. Not sure if too deep for a non-driven excavator tool-rented, of course-but as I understand it using a small driven model is too specialized for a novice to use. Anyway, done is done and the results is pretty spectacular. The dog may not appreciate the beautiful appearance but it looks good in the yard-and the comfort features speak for themselves. I thought it was really impressive.
I’m not sure if I would rather be your dog, your next door neighbor, or your new best friend, but I think I need to be Inner Circle. This was wildly impressive. Your care and attention to detail rivals my own! I have no notes. This was flawless.
@@debbiejansen1178 he said the pup spent most of the time indoors with them. This was for times he was not at home so his dog could have protection - and still go to the bathroom.
things i love about this channel is he doesn't cut corners. its always a 1st rate quality job. nothing 1/2 assed neither technique or materials. he films the entire thing and tells you how many hours it took and how much it cost. too many diy channels make stuff seem like they did it in a weekend for $75 when its hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars. i climbed on this channel back in i think may when he had 132k subs and growth has been explosive. this is the project farm of diy project channels.
He missed putting cable clamps on the wire connecting the two square metal junction boxes. Then he covered the junction boxes with the wall. Both are a big no no
Wonderfully executed in so many ways! You should consider selling it online as a kit. Thank you for your thoughtful and kind project-your dog truly deserves it.
I watched this because I have some outside cats in an unheated garage during US midwest winter. While i don’t think I could come close to creating something like this, I still really enjoyed watching it. You have made something super nice for one lucky dog. I think there’s nothing wrong with what you spent. It’s relative to what you can afford and the aesthetic you desire. Very nice.
Section off a part of your garage and put a child safe space heater to warm it up. Put in carpet squares to block the cold cement. Put a cat tower so you don’t need much floor space to keep the kitties warm. Or, if you’re okay with cats being in the house, put in a pet door.
Love it. Why not! 10+ years ago I bought a brand new kid's cubby house with a verandah for my dogs to use during the day while I was at work. I spent around $AUD870 and they never used it once preferred to be inside. I still have it.
Definitely not too much to spend on your doggie to keep them happy and warm! And she does look like she loves the snow and cold crisp weather! You made her happy…and warm!
That's so cool. I lost my dog 16 months ago after having her for 15 years. She was truly amazing in so many ways. She will always have a special space in my heart. Do what you can while you have them, after all it's the undone things in life that we regret the most as we grow older. Love em while you got em. Beautiful dog house.
It's necessary because he feels guilty making Bailey live outside in the FREEZING cold in Canada, away from his/her family pack, which is cruel and abusive. She/he doesn't need a fancy dog house, she/ he needs YOU.
On what planet was this demonstration "perfect"? He was nailing the groove side of the t&g siding and, didn't used pressure treated wood for floor joist on an outdoor structure... "extremely amateur" is the right description.

I am a grandmother and I was fascinated with the whole video. I think it's precious that you wanted to make your dog a warm place to spend the winter. You didn't sound like a novice and I'm impressed about how you knew what to do with every step. Great job !!
I am laying in bed under my electric blanket watching this video. I am enjoying the build, my dog is laying next to me with her body under the covers and she is enjoying watching it too.
Wow! I'm impressed. Housewife stumbled upon this video....what a great talent you have. I never even knew you could heat a floor that way and to see you cut off all of the wires and rewire them to run from your phone is really cool.
Just a couple water ceiling tips. After cutting the plywood barn siding it's a good idea to paint the cut edges especially the ones going toward the bottom. That siding will rot out and break down pretty fast compared to other wood When doing the fascia flashing and you're not able to bend it around a corner and you do a lap. Which yours looked really good. It's a good idea to put butyl or mastic or even some double-sided foam tape in the lap. The silicone on the surface will eventually lose adhesion and water will find its way in there. Especially with freeze and thaw.
I mean. considering he filmed it and uploaded it to youtube for a source of income, i wouldn't say it was completely about the dog. But Bailey sure does soak up the benefits of his work, lmao.
My dad framed houses when I was little. He had a wolf dog that he loved like another child, so naturally he built a ridiculous dog house with heating and insulation. That dog would sleep half in half out of that thing for years but never go any further than that lol. This was awesome man good work.
I love this! It's beautiful. Well built. Over 35 years ago, a friend built an incredible dog house for my golden retriever. He put shingles it and put it on its own deck. My dog spent 99% of his time indoors. But that 1%, he was sure to be in comfort. So no, I don't think 2k is too much for any beloved member of the family, no matter how many legs it has. Well done, Canada! 🇨🇦 From Jenn in central Ohio, US. And I promise I will not support any madness to buy or make Canada part of the US.
Brilliant job. My only suggestion would have been to make the roof structure hinged so you can literally lift it up and do things inside the house without having to crawl in. Cleaning it out, replacing dog bedding, checking on the dog if he is immobile, all made much easier if you can just pop the lid and look inside, and there's no reason you can't do that even with a nice solid roof. You might want to add hydraulic lifters to make it easier, particularly in Winter, but that would only cause a minor budgetary increase for a tremendous amount of ease of future operation.
Agreed, I was slightly worried that the house - and the entrance - were a bit on the small side. Bailey's quite a big girl, and it was noticeable she had to crouch to get through the doorway. God forbid she were ever taken ill or collapsed inside the dog house - it would be a struggle to get her out through that doorway. I agree, a hinged roof (or even wall) would allow fast/easy access to the interior for cleaning or anything else, when needed.
Our "cold weather" dog door has 2 layers of plastic flaps to create an air space in the middle, it makes a big difference. It also has magnets to try and keep the flaps closed.
@@DrewBuildsStuff Great build Drew! 13 degrees F here today. The vinyl is also used on warehouse overhead doors & in commercial freezers to keep the expensive conditioned air where it is needed, just like an ice rink. Coldest ice rink I ever visited was the Rutland, Vermont community rink. I might have added a wi-fi repeater to the build, if you require service in your yard area during the non winter months, but hey Bailey is a luck y dog & doesn't need wi-fi, I presume.
all that effort and time you put into that style and look of the house could have been put into more comfort and efficiency. other than that, cool project
@@DrewBuildsStuff - how do you keep other critters out? Mole, vole, rat, mouse, chipmunk, raccoon, feral dogs or cats etc? Open-access to warm housing might appeal to freeloaders - right? Just asking...
A buddy of mine did something very similar except he just collected up left over materials from other builds and used the excess for the dog house.. He has 3 dogs, so his was quite a bit bigger, but all in all, suited the same needs.. And ur right.. It's a small price to pay to keep your animals alive and well during the harsh weather months.. ❤
Electrical tip: Don't strip the external jacket of the extension cord until you have fed it up into the box. Better yet, install a marine shore line plug with a cover so you can just plug in the electrical cord during the winter and remove it completely in the warmer months.
Such excellent attention to detail. Lovely design.I loved watching you work. He us one very lucky dog. If you ever end up "in the dog house," there will be no suffering there:)

Nah most ppl will keep an OAP furry friend in doors! Yeah isn't this dog so lucky!! If she could speak she'd say hey dad why you speaking for me with those lies about me wanting to be sleeping outside?? My question is if the dog "spends a lot of time in the house" then why not let it spend the most precious time by having long warm sleeps in the space where all the love is? You just create a devide between importance when its KICKED out when it's bed time!!
Probably should have watched the full video before making assumptions. She’s aloud in our house anytime she wants, she also loves being outside. Said this in the video
@Drew Builds Stuff @Drew Builds Stuff firstly i watched the video in full. I'm not hating on you. It's not like you're on your own with a dogs sleeping arrangement. Clearly, Bailey deserves this bougie dog house, and it was a great learning experience for you, too. Building materials have gone up so much lately, so $2000 is not really a surprise, considering the high quality spec you built to. Well done!

Awesome build. Mine was a bit more rudimentary, but same "creature comforts" + a solar powered vent fan for during the summer months. I used 2x 200 watt chicken coop heater panels with a wifi reptile habitat thermostat as the controller. Between heating, cooling, and a doggy door I'm into it for less than $200.00. I sourced most of my build materials for free. And had to buy a large sheet of 2.5 inch foam for insulation. It's so reassuring; being able to monitor the tempature of her house during the winter months. It's 22 degrees outside right now and her house is 70 degrees inside. I also have a wifi camera to keep an eye on her aswell.
Absolutely love the dog house, you most likely are aware but if the dog bed has synthetic fill it is very hospitable to mold and mildew, especially with it being overtop the in floor heating. I bring this up because the snow from the dogs coat will melt and be absorbed by the bed. If applicable i would recommend some moisture absorbent material which can be picked up in any home garden section/ online for any indoor grow op. loved this video!
That was a fantastic build! One thing that crossed my mind was whether it would've been a good idea to have a petsafe electronic smart door - those that only open when your dog's collar radio is in proximity, so that your dog won't go into the house and find any unwelcome or even dangerous intruders? But an otherwise gorgeous design!
Well our inside cane Corso dogs have always had a pretty nice dog house. You have to take them out for fresh air everyday etc. Then they sleep in the house.😊
As a retired cabinetmaker I rarely watch DIY videos like this. Usually it's someone who sticks their face, full frame, in the camera and pretends to be a pro. However, being a dog lover I was intriqued and I really like your design. With a few nicer tools, a tablesaw, oscillating saw and mitersaw station for repeat cuts, you could increase your production and quality. And...... the 3D printed extension for the window..... WOW. Seriously nice touch. Keep at it, you are definitely smart and have the desire to build. Congrats on a beatiful "Casa de perro."
Dear Drew , A very thoughtful , thorough build ...well done ! This Grandma is passing on a "country " hint : Although this dog house is heated , you might consider obtaining a bale of straw , separating the "books" , and fluffing them up , to loosely fill the inside of her house . Looks awesome. Love the look including the lights and wood exterior. $1500 US for a doghouse isn't realistic unless you're wealthy. A conventional 60 watt or 100 watt light bulb (not LED) inside the doghouse provides a lot of heat especially if you add the clear plastic "door". I've built and purchased dog houses over the years. I add the clear plastic "door", a light bulb in a small enclosure for heat, seal up the dog house with caulking, and you'd be amazed at how warm the interior gets. I understand why this kind of video is more popular though :). Thanks for the content. Lucky dog!
Glad I stumbled across this video. Great work here man! I actually spent about $2k on our under stairs/ wasted space dog room. Installed tile, lighting, and a dual paned through wall dog door. Also, built a custom oak door that matches the Bannister lol
one more addition: it would have been nice to include some hinges for the roof with some tight fitting metal bars to secure it and where you can put a lock on it - with that you could open up the roof and have an easy access to the inside to clean it
Sounds cool but wouldn't be. Wouldn't be weatherproof, even if you tried to make it as waterproof as possible - with the amount of heavy snow he gets, it would surely become miserably messy with how much water that would find its way inside.
@@B_M_AIt’s possible to make a tight seal, however it would be more work than its worth for however less isolated the house gets, overall just not worth it

Loved this! I’m a carpenter myself so it’s nice to see someone else take pride in their work. I would’ve maybe used a grommet screw for the nails on the exterior of the flashing, only thing I’d change haha.
I was looking for stuff too but only thing I really noticed was when putting in the flooring the last piece is always a full one and the ripped piece gets moved inside but that’s splitting hairs
"It was gonna cost like 4 or 5 times as much, which seemed unnecessary for a dog house." So that's where you draw the line? Fancy shingles? Lol All joking aside, this dog house is amazing. So much talent.

Beautiful work! You won't have any trouble with your other outdoor projects. I built an insulated dog house in my workshop about 35 years ago. The problem was that my workshop was on the second floor of our barn, and the doghouse weighed about 250 to 300 lbs. It was difficult to move, but the dog loved it. Keep up the great videos!
I had that issue once. Built something heavy in my garage and had to move it upstairs on the other side of the house. I tied it to my dolly and hooked the dolly to my riding mower and drove it over, then used my stair climbers on the dolly to carefully pull it upstairs without damaging the carpet. Magliner Gemini dollies are worth their weight in gold for stairs and heavy moving.
Totally fascinating build. Only thing I was a little concerned about was the cleaning of. My old dog house had a hinged and latched roof that enabled quick access for cleaning. 😊
$2000 is quite a bit to spend on a dog house but at the same time, that dog house is really well designed and built and looks very very nice. So I’d say for what it is, it’s probably not too expensive.
Roofing tip: 25:22 The first stagger on the starter shingle should be 6-8 inches as well. I know there’s drip edge along the side, but there should still be an overhang with a starter shingle. It looks crisp. Lastly the nails go on the lower white line of the shingles rather the the higher one. The lower white line is the double layered part of the shingle so your shingles don’t fly away.
Absolutely awesome! I mean it really looks fantastic! A thought as she gets older: consider redoing the opening to make it taller. Dogs (and cats) shouldn’t crouch down to go through a dog/cat door. But with as amazing as this is, I’m sure you’ll come up with something GREAT when the time comes, as she gets older :)
A circular steel rail and castors on the base would be nice so the dog can rotate the house according to the suns position. Or maybe a small electric motor powered by solar panels to do the same job, the dog just needs to be trained to push a button with his or her paws.
Wow! I think that is a Blessing to think of your dog that way. Some people wouldn't care if their dog lived or died, but you, showed so much compassion. Wished a lot of people would shelter their dog one way or another. may not have the means of building a new house, but just don't let your dog, cat or whatever pet freeze. I built a radiant heated doghouse a number of years ago. However I also included a 5000 BTU window air conditioner. It was a much larger doghouse with the left side wall hinged so I could easily open it for regular cleaning. The dog loved it, winter & summer. Yearly operating cost was insignificant.

Tomorrow afternoon, he'll go out the dog door to sunbathe a bit before he grazes on grass until sunset when he comes back in the house, has a snack, then heads to his cage to get on top of his warmer, for the night.

The dog's companionship is priceless. You could have never spend too much. Drew you are definitely very talented and a good person.

How is this dog, living alone in the yard, a companion?
When I was a kid my dad built an insulated doghouse for the family dog too. With a double door of sorts to keep the wind out, and a hinged roof so he could check on the condition of the inside now and then. She loved it and would demand to go outside at night.
Couldn't even get my dogs to sleep on a nice comfy bed. They preferred the cold hard floor for some weird reason

Section off a part of your garage and put a child safe space heater to warm it up. Put in carpet squares to block the cold cement. Put a cat tower so you don’t need much floor space to keep the kitties warm. Or, if you’re okay with cats being in the house, put in a pet door.

Just a couple water ceiling tips.
After cutting the plywood barn siding it's a good idea to paint the cut edges especially the ones going toward the bottom. That siding will rot out and break down pretty fast compared to other wood
When doing the fascia flashing and you're not able to bend it around a corner and you do a lap. Which yours looked really good. It's a good idea to put butyl or mastic or even some double-sided foam tape in the lap. The silicone on the surface will eventually lose adhesion and water will find its way in there. Especially with freeze and thaw.

Oh that’s a very good idea 👍
good idea.
Good idea, could be added if needed. It doesn’t get that cold around here but I’ll keep that in mind! Thanks

Not only did he do an exceptional job on his fur babies second home but I didn’t d look anything else while watching which is quite rare for me I would had paid that magnificent dog house loved the led light addition and the heated floor

Absolutely brilliant, and no way is this 'over the top' for Bailey. It's obvious you had a great time building as well. Awesome.

Dann bruh that a genius idea
yea only thing i could think of is how much snakes like a warm floor
I don't think snakes would be a problem with those low temperatures!
Its alredy have this, its calling "marked smell"
Smell of the dog should be enough to keep out anything that can fit through the door!

Dear Drew ,
A very thoughtful , thorough build ...well done !
This Grandma is passing on a "country " hint :
Although this dog house is heated , you might consider obtaining a bale of straw , separating the "books" , and fluffing them up , to loosely fill the inside of her house . Our dogs burrowed into the straw , creating a warm , custom nest that blocked the wind further , kept them warm and... the contact with the straw also helped to clean their coats ! Win/win !
Thank you for sharing your time and talent...stay safe and well !
Rodents like mice and rats will love that straw and will keep them warm as well.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts . Each of us share wisdom gained from our individual experiences , in the hope that it may be of some help to those with whom we share . The choice , of course , lies with them . Be well ...@@r3tr0actiongamer24
Hell yeah nice lol
one more addition: it would have been nice to include some hinges for the roof with some tight fitting metal bars to secure it and where you can put a lock on it - with that you could open up the roof and have an easy access to the inside to clean it
Not necessary. The dog has a maid.
@@thetej2227I’m good thanks
Sounds cool but wouldn't be. Wouldn't be weatherproof, even if you tried to make it as waterproof as possible - with the amount of heavy snow he gets, it would surely become miserably messy with how much water that would find its way inside.
@@B_M_AIt’s possible to make a tight seal, however it would be more work than its worth for however less isolated the house gets, overall just not worth it
@@B_M_A Exactly, we have similar weather in northern sweden and melting snow gets into all nooks and crammys, besides he could easily get his torso in there and just vacuum it real quick and wipe it with some damp cloth
Wow, Bailey is one lucky Labrador. I think that is one of the fanciest dog houses I have seen. I really enjoyed your video on the raising of her pups, so this is a nice reward for her for all her hard work. Drew, congratulations on a job well done.
"It was gonna cost like 4 or 5 times as much, which seemed unnecessary for a dog house."
So that's where you draw the line? Fancy shingles? Lol
All joking aside, this dog house is amazing. So much talent.
Lol! I has the same thought.

If you loved your pet, you'd let them stay inside.
It’s a reasonable price for me 😊

Roofing tip: 25:22
The first stagger on the starter shingle should be 6-8 inches as well. I know there’s drip edge along the side, but there should still be an overhang with a starter shingle. It looks crisp. Lastly the nails go on the lower white line of the shingles rather the the higher one. The lower white line is the double layered part of the shingle so your shingles don’t fly away.
Are you a roofing expert? Genuine question. As in, do you work in the roofing/tiling field?

Absolutely awesome! I mean it really looks fantastic! A thought as she gets older: consider redoing the opening to make it taller. Dogs (and cats) shouldn’t crouch down to go through a dog/cat door. But with as amazing as this is, I’m sure you’ll come up with something GREAT when the time comes, as she gets older :)
I agree!
A bigger Door but with a porch.
A circular steel rail and castors on the base would be nice so the dog can rotate the house according to the suns position. Or maybe a small electric motor powered by solar panels to do the same job, the dog just needs to be trained to push a button with his or her paws.
I was gonna comment this. Make the opening higher
mans gonna make an automatic door
Taller wider Kennel with a bigger entrance suitable for a bigger dog. Why does a dog house have to be a tight squeeze with little space for any movement?

What a lovely cozy cottage. What would be really cool, is to have webcam with night vision in it so you can see what the dog's up to during her stay in the cottage. Also like that you put a touch screen thermostat there so she can adjust the temperature with her nose whenever she feels like it :D

Some dog breeds perfer being in the snow. Are you canadian?
Animals mostly can take what Nature throws at them, they don't need A/C or Heating systems like we humans needed that much, specially those breeds biologically suitable for Snow environment, for us put them within our heating house, is kinda slow cooker for them, boil those cancer cells into them.
So find out what kind of breed your dog is, and give them those environments to keep them healthy for a long time.
