I hope the brevity of this retrospective will be yet another bite sized little chunk
There's another reason why Qui-Gon refused to use Jedi powers to manipulate the Gungans into becoming glorified cannon fodder for the Naboo: it probably goes against the Jedi Code in a pretty fundamental way. If the Gungans were going to throw their lives away, it had to be of their own free will (at least to the extent that the Force allows for that sort of thing).
45:10 The influence from Dune to Star Wars continues: "The slow blaster penetrates the shield!"
And I thought MauLer could dissect a film. Jeeebus. I didn't know I needed this in my life, but I guess my inner nerd was hungry, because I can't get enough of this. 😂
I think that a major plot that got missed was that the Gungan Army technologies, the City of the Gungans, as well as that sub shows that the Gungans not only have a good grasp of science and technology, but also the advance thinking skills to best use that knowledge. Unlike the Ewoks, the Gungans seem to have culturally evolved to the point where they view technology as something not needed for day-to-day life, but instead only use it as absolutely necessary for survival. I think a solid case could be made that out of the two species inhabiting Naboo, the Gungans were the smarter.
So you’re basically saying they’re actually more akin to wookies than ewoks?
@@Sir_TophamHatt very much so
The Gungan binoculars likely have stereoscopic rangefinding function as well.
They have nearly the same form down to the shoulder rests as the WW2 German R36.
As we know, Lucas drew quite a bit of inspiration from the WW2 era.
Excellent work as always. I'm always impressed with the bread-th of your knowledge. Well done.
Ha! We noticed you noticing the smoke shell pun. -DZ
I look forward to each new episode every weekend.
We're delighted to hear that, Chief. -DZ
Never really got the Jar Jar hate but love for Threepio, you are one of the few I have heard that equates the characters and how Lucas used them. I had also considered him the Prequels version of Threepio. Great Video
I really like your explanation for the Gungan shields, but i think it’s also possible that the Gungans have simply discovered those types of shields given their unique circumstances being a semi aquatic species with their access to the unique resource of physical packets of plasma. It’s possible that these shields are something that the rest of the starwars universe has never considered; possibly that such a thing has been deemed impossible, improbable, or just too difficult to achieve in any practical manner (either needing too much energy or being too big to put in a small spacecraft but outputting too small a shield for a large one)
Did everyone know that its Kiera Knightley playing the decoy queen? I remember seeing it in mid 2000s and thinking she looked so familiar. I was shocked finding out it was Kiera Knightley. Sabe is her character name
XD That ER reference
What is that cool song at the beginning? :-)
Great work, as usual. I always loved T.P.M., and watching you highlight all the details and implications has increased my admiration for it. Thank you for that. Aaaand, it really highlights how much thought and effort went into making such a varied movie that had a lot riding on it. ❤
That's great to hear, we really appreciate it. The song from the opening is Alla Pugacheva - Arlekino (Geoffrey Day Remix). -DZ
That E;R bit got me good xD
I can't wait for next video to cover the importance of Gavyn Sykes, and how the N1 starfighter represents the pinnacle of Naboo military technology.
46:54 EVEN Rayshields are established to be lethal to unarmored infantry. The burn/electrocute the hell out of a guy in that one TCW episode that was a tribute to the movie Cube.
There is another important shield tip you missed, from the cannon Star Wars the Clone Wars series. The concept of speed beating shields is confirmed with the droidekas during a training montage. Forgot the episode, but it's in there.
Qui-gon didn’t want to influence the gungans to fight because he would be forcing them to fight and die for him. The times he used the force before, he was doing so to help people without much consequence for the recipient, he prevented jar-jars punishment, and freed Anakin. With watto, he wasn’t trying to get the parts for free, just to accept the currency he had that would need to be exchanged later. He qui-gon hadn’t been killed, I imagine he would refuse to take part in the war and would be against the Jedi involvement.
12:13: Holy crap, I never noticed that right here, Qui-gon used the Jedi Mind trick. Very subtle, good job pointing that out!
I never noticed that Lucrehulks aren't all droid control ships 😮
33:39
Okay, that one got me
Loving this series. Very hapy to have seen this channel early on!
The E;R reference was definitely unexpected but a pleasant surprise lol
A surprise, to be sure. But a welcome one.
3:24 George wasn't kidding when he said EVERY stanza rhymed with the last one.
Great vid
you're hesitant to sugest... lul I think that is exactly what Gorge had in mind when he had Boss Nass promote him...
It's confirmed in the lore that many types of shields prevent high kinetic impacts and energy impacts, but slow moving objects can move thru.
During the Clone Wars, Droidika shields can be bypassed by rolling grenades thru them at the right speed. Too fast, they bounce off, too slow they don't go far enough lol.
Hanger shields will let a ship slowly cruise thru, but will stop a fast moving missile or laser blast.
Anakin had to destroy the shield rather than slow down to get into Grievous's ship because Obiwan was out of control and needed to crash land.
37:55 There's the POSSIBILITY of some magnetic field out the barrel "Gimbal" like TIEs firing off-axis for this but there's no stuff around the edge of the barrel like the TIE's bumps or the X-wing's crescents. The TCW version of the tank actually removes the "Hull MGs" and frontal heat vent for more sloped armor. It instead doubles the guns on the arms, which means they give up the arm mounted Rangefinders or they've found a way to miniaturize them and place them elsewhere.
I would say the shields on ships for the landing hanger, the round battle droids and the gungan shields all glow because of particles in the air interacting. You won't have particles in space
I'd like to mention that one more reason for the tanks not to advance is because approaching infantry makes tanks vulnerable. If they can't keep the enemy from climbing onto the tanks, they become prey to many handheld weapons, as was proven when Jar Jar managed to get on one and thw other gungan saw it as an opportunity for an easy kill, botched only by Jar Jar's clumsiness.
The repulsion force theory is good though, and is even enforced by the extra effort the battle droids needed to take to pass through.
It also explains why anyone would bother with legged designs in the first place.
Why use slower, terrain dependant legs when you can hover over it, unless replusors have a limitation.
@@matthiuskoenig3378 Personally, if the technology allows for legged designs to be sturdy, reliable, and cheap enough to produce, there's no issues having legged designs even when anti-grav exists. The enhanced terrain feature makes it an understandable choice over treads, and its ability to resist being knocked around is a reason over anit-grav.
Best shit on RUclips in a long time ago galaxy etc etc. Thanks !!
Ah lets go lads
38:20 infantry handles actually imply a cavalry tank.
The Soviets were the ones who developed tank riding, it solves the issue of haveing infantry with fast moveing tanks relatively cheaply. And it was first done with their BT series of tanks in the 1930s and last done with their T-62 tanks in the 1960s and ealry 1970s. But most famously done with the T-34. It was not done in the assault but in exploitation (the role of cavalry) and behind the lines (redeployment, the only time where infantry rode infantry tanks and assault tanks).
Tank riders therefore implies a medium/cavalry tank not an assault/infantry tank.
Thank you for pointing out the nuance of Qui-Gon mind tricking BB Nass. Nass has a pretty sizeable ego, where his bodysize matched to keep up with his status, which means he is not of weak will and the way he "gives" them a vehicle they've never driven so that the two Jedi plus Jar Jar could be lost or killed in the water tunnel labyrinth implies some level of atleast moderate intelligence. Notice how Nass, the moment Qui-Gon mentioned the life debt Jar Jar ows him gets immediatly upset, showing that he isn't just lulled in and compliant, but rather with something unpleasant in mind for Jar Jar.
The notion of him partially resisting is also highly likely, as Nass was already inclined to get the Jedi out of Gungan waters. He knew they would be very troublesome to fight, given the fact they as land dwellers just came to the Gungan capital deep underwater and had 100% chill in the meeting with him.
As long as you keep it "brief", I'll keep watching 😅
Using a Jedi mindtrick to escape a situation without resorting to violence vs using a mind trick to convince people to fight a war that many will likely die in.
Kind of a big difference. Darkside emotions would likely be required to even do the latter, since convincing someone to fight usually requires triggering anger or fear in the subject.
I approve of your analysis as to why the Federation bombardment wouldn't pass through Gungan shielding, but battle droids would. When I first watched the film, I presumed the Federation tanks were firing energy weapons... if that were the case, it would have been the same shielding we saw in A New Hope, shielding which blocks energy weapons but not solid objects. I was dismayed when I read the lore that said Trade Federation tanks fired solid objects instead of energy. :(
But your explanation of different solid surfaces would reconcile the narrative pretty well. Understand that I also want this lore to fit with various Star Wars video games, in which shielding acts like it does in A New Hope!
Can't wait for part 20
A comment for K-Dam the Kakapo for he may stay at health
I read the book before seeing the film.
In the writing, the big Padme reveal actually works. I had no idea. It's implied that Padme is an operative, a valueable spy.
Interesting how you are analysing and evaluating the films through consulting and citing EU reference books and TPM multimedia. I'd argue that canonical continuity has some interesting technical information with the updated edition of Complete Locations, Complete Vehicles and etc.
Nice usage of the SWTC - you should link your sources in the description. It will expose more folks to the brilliant DK Star Wars 'non-fiction' range.
Commenting for the algo, criminally undersubbed channel
42:36 Maybe the Gungan shields ARE dual function as particle shields but only against highspeed stuff, with a weakness for things that are both small and slow AND in ground contact. The city shields can keep out thousands of tons of water And likely can stop very high speed solid shot or at least preemtively detonate them. Oh you agreed with me in part.
@36:45 An Order of the Stick reference! Nice.
This is the second one we've ever used, with the first in our podracing video. If you ever hear the phrase "pretty good, actually" in one of these videos, I guarantee that's also an OotS reference. -DZ
Dunno if this got mentioned, but there was a Clone Wars episode about dealing with velocity-based shields, specifically ones that Droidekas are equipped.
Another great part, can wait for the next part. Keep up the great work. Peace ✌🏻
45:19 Badminton shuttlecocks regularly reach up to twice the speed of tennis balls in professional matches. It's one of the fastest ball sports in terms of ball velocity. The WR is faster than tennis, squash, golf, jai alai or baseball.
The prison camps and the whole Gungan war is so glaced over in the movie. It would have been stronger if we've seen Naboo people in camps suffering and dying.
Or even better the 'suffering and dying' was just a bluff, and it turns out the trade federation have morals, their only negative trait is greed. the camps exist hut the people are treated like pows. This helps the future films where the trade federation get off lightly, not not believable that genocidal people get off lightly and get the support of discruntled systems (CIS), they have to be somewhat low teir evil and thus more redeemable.
I really hope you do all three prequel movies
49:19 If Hoth had only ray shields the landing ships would have just dropped right on the base. Indeed walkers can pass through the bottom of a shield where the particle shield effect is weakest and the ground contact shields them from the electrical discharges.
31:36 The AI upscale thing makes it look like the Ewoks have some serious cloaking technology XD
20:20 Check out WW2 rangefinders as well. Very similar design-wise.
I prefer the theory that energy weapons cant pass trough reflector shields, but conventional weapons can or anything with mass, even that Star Wars is a semi fantasy, that is more realistic than other settings like Star Trek and their magical shields.
Now this is coming from someone who doesn't have anywhere close to the amount of Star Wars Knowledge as you guys do but I have a suggestion regarding the Gungan Shields being based on Speed & Velocity:
What if it's a primitive design?
The argument against it being based on Speed/Velocity is that no shield works like that before or after in Star Wars & it would be easy to circumvent but if it's a primitive design then that would explain everything.
We never saw this kind of shield in the OT or the rest of the PT because better technology had already been invented. We see it with the Gungans though because they're a primitive species and either don't have the resources to make better shields or haven't figured it out yet. As pointed out in the video, they don't seem to have any kind of archery so it makes sense for them to have older kinds of shields.
As for why the Battle Droids didn't try driving into the shields with their vehicles or use the shell projectiles, they probably didn't recognize the technology. Again, if this is primitive shield technology, then they might not have any data on it because the rest of the Galaxy uses the other kinds. The Droids are mass-produced so it'd be faster & cheaper to exclude any data that would be deemed irrelevant such as old shield technology that nobody uses anymore.
Again, I haven't read most of the books or supplementary material, so I could be wrong here and there's lore contradicting my suggestion.
This is based entirely on the official comment mentioned in the video and the Gungans being a primitive species in general.
The discord is cool 👍
Not sending the tanks threw the sheald may have been a strategic choice. Slowing the tank enough to bypass the sheald would leave them easier targets for the catapults.
They legit used the Windows 95 Desktop theme and background for their battlefield lol 👏😅😂🤣
yup the aat so good its best feature was never used
AAT side cannons looks like they'd have only one axis of movement. In slowed shot when one falls off there is simple pin joint.
If cross section book shows individual ammo feed for every tube, that one in the movie is fireing all types of munitions in single salvo. Reference books are often made whan movie is half baked so VFX wouldn't be finalised, but it's a screw up.
It might be too fanficky, but I'd love to see somewhere speeders that transform into mecha mode to pass shields or some rocket torpedo that crawls on the ground and then flies up. :D
You're right, the movie had no idea there'd be three different shell types mentioned in the book. The best option would be to say at least some AATs were loaded with the same shell in all three magazines. You might want a variety against the Naboo, but there's no need to bring bunker-buster or AP shells when you're fighting primitives.
They had a day or two where tanks could have been re-equipped for anti-Gungan duty: all high-energy shells. You'd only use the middle launchers when rate of fire is important, otherwise you'd prefer the outside tubes for their larger ammo rack. -DZ
Weapons mounts can have different axis of rotation points at different places.
The side mounts likely are like turrets mounted on the sides. 360 degree rotation around their main point of attachment (vertical axis), the ones in the movie (as opposed to ones used in games/etc). If you examine the gun mounts closely they ate segmented. The guns are attached to a narrow segment (resembling gun-mentlet similar to many ww2 tank designs, like the type 95)which is a separate segment to the rear which is a separate segment to the bottom, there is also a separate round segment which is where the turret ring is (ie where its vertical rotation is). Horizontal axis rotation could be made along any of the top section segments. The mantlets might have side rotation like a real mantlet on its side (as it resembles a type 95 we can see ~20 degrees to either side). It could also rotate with the second or second+third segment. This could allow a wide arc to the side of the vehicle, but limited arc to towards the vehicle itself.
It's also possible there is an internal axis of rotation (similar to a ELC EVEN turret) between the round segment (that attaches to the Hull-arm) and the rest of the weapon mount.
Just think Rey Skywalkers dad is floating around in palps balls this whole movie. Glorious 😂
i like the grounded thing making walkers useful, but why not just like dangle a grounding wire off everything then. to me i always assumed the gungans had specific gungan tech that other people didn't have. thus they use various slow moving projectiles and melee weapons themselves, and the droids tried the tank barrage because they simply didn't know how the shields worked. i also wouldn't think the basis for the gungan tech was rare just that you'd only think to use it for everything if you lived deep underwater next to like plasma fish or w/e the deal was with that.
@dextrodemon
He gives an example of how. It's not "grounding", perse, but being able to "push" against the shield by exerting force on the ground. A ship with a ground g wire, if the repulsors aren't strong enough, wouldn't be able to overcome to shield. A Droid, person, walker, wheeled/tracked apc/tank would also have contact with the ground, propelling itself by pushing against it, thus giving it leverage against the shield.
My issue with your explanation of the shield mechanics... About AT-AT walkers pushing through a millimeter at a time... If that were the case, wouldn't it make sense to have a smaller shield array around the base on Hoth, rather than the overly large one they deployed, or at least have artillery deployed within range of the shield terminus? If the walkers had to "slowly" push through, that leaves them completely open to fire, because they're moving at a significantly slower rate than before. One could argue that's why they had forward mounted cannons, but the cannons primarily fire forward. Artillery deployed "to the side" would absolutely be able to hit the bridge in the head before the bulk of the walker got through, significantly damaging the walker before it could even get through. The layout of the shield on Hoth indicates this isn't a thing that happens, the Rebellion didn't know about the AT-AT walkers, or that the Rebellion in general is ignorant of how shielding works...

Two things I'm curious about, Mr. Circus mentions that Qui Gon smiled knowingly it took obi wan so long to catch onto the body double, do we think this was an intentional detail? Or a decision made by Liam Neison?
I'm also curious, if Padme was elected to be royalty, why would the Naboo elect someone so young?
There's reason why Darth Jar Jar theory appeared

ohh my, HK47 anyone ?
How much supplementary and third party media do you have to sift through to get explanations for one movie. 😂
Hmm, I'd say there are about 50 books that most of our references are sourced from. The Essential Guide series is my favourite, followed by the Incredible Cross-Sections, Visual Dictionary, New Essential Guide, and of course the novelisations. The most obscure stuff comes from the West End Games RPG books, and there are over 100 in that series alone. -DZ
I mean, you don't need any supplementary material to understand the plot of the film. The supplementary material is mainly for background info that elevates the film from good to great.

How short is short enough? Some have suggested we cut sections of the video out to release on their own, as a standalone 4-7 minute video. Though certain topics would be more like 15-20 minutes, and that might qualify as "too long". -DZ
