Before the days of RUclips, I wanted my dad to see this video. He’s a Vietnam vet. And CMT was hard to line up with his schedule. I used the email on the Montgomery Gentry website and asked where I could view this video so my pop could see it. They generously sent my dad a dvd with the video and a small message thanking him for his service. I’ll never forget that small kindness they did for my old man. He loves this video. And feels it pays proper tribute to all vets who did their job, but weren’t appreciated at the time. ❤️

Vietnam Veteran; I can say; this song gets me. We were looked down on and it took years to feel the pride of our service. I'm proud now. Me and my High School friend joined together, went through Boot Camp together and headed separate ways from there. Bill is buried in the National Cenetery in Leavenworth Kansas.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice sir. And welcome home 🇺🇸
I turned 21 and 22 in Afghanistan on two back to back deployments from 2012-14. My grandady did 3 tours in Nam as a volunteer. When I was 8 years old I ask him why he didn’t get drafted. Now I had no idea what a draft was or how it worked etc. he said “because all them other boys just like me was getting drafted and going to war and dying. I had to volunteer to go. He wasn’t a college student or important in any way. So it was just a matter of time until till his number was up. But I remember just how proud he was that he was a volunteer. A little over 6 month into his 3rd year/deloyment he caught enough shrapnel and a bullet in the leg to come home. I remember him saying that by that time he was ready to just be home. But his leg would ultimately get him discharged.
He walked with a limp the rest of his life and that’s why I served.
      It’s in my blood.

What I saw that day made sure I enlisted 3 yrs later. My brothers, my uncles, my fathers- thank you and welcome home. You done good. I salute you all.

I relate to this song, I returned to the States to be greeted by prople that had no idea what "we" went through. 35 years later I still can only talk to my "brothers" about that time. I pray that todays Vets won't have to go through that. I am proud of all who were willing to put on the uniform and protect those who didn't or couldn't.

My Brothers name is Dennis Hoffman, but few people knew him by that. Everyone called him "Hooper". That's him in the Red & Black at 3:15. He rode with the VNV/MC out of Ventura, CA. He was wild, He was a bit crazy, He was a damned good dude and he was proud to be a Vietnam Veteran. I am proud that he called me "Brother" and I miss him BIG TIME!

I thank every vet I see, for what they had to do to protect me, my family, and everything this country stands for. And I feel bad sometimes that some cry because of me doing that. It's hard seeing a grown man cry, but I know they're tears of joy. And this song is a understanding, to a fraction of what these men and women have to go through.

First, in appreciation, love, and respect for the men and women who have given their all (and even their lives) for this country when called upon to do so. And, secondly, for the tombstone that reads “UNKNOWN”...because he or she WAS known! He or she had a family! He or she WAS LOVED! And, I can guarantee you that, that mother and father, that brother and sister, that husband and wife, that son and daughter, that family, have NOT spent lonely hours, days, YEARS crying for their “UNKNOWN” to come home, or grieving the loss of their special “UNKNOWN”. That “UNKNOWN” had a name! That “UNKNOWN” had a family! That “UNKNOWN” was LOVED!

People often forget what our soldiers and veterans have done for this country. I think this song helps us all remember how brave they are and were.

+Jackson Anderson I personally dislike this song, but not for what it stands for. I just never cared for the beat and instrumental parts of it. Still, I sometimes listens to it for the lyrics, the lyrics are wonderful.

+Young Carter I wish more country music was like this. So *damn* much of it is shit about pickup trucks, hawnky tawnks, drinking beer, and devastating breakups where the man absolutely gets screwed over.

I'd have to say that this song is one of Montgomery Gentry's best songs. I thought it was awesome when they broke Brooks & Dunn's duo of the year streak in 2000, because it was just their second year in the business.

I want to thank all of our service men and woman past and present. On this coming Memorial Day weekend we should all take the time to think about and pay tribute in some way to all the brave solders that are fighting for us. I don't care if you agree with the war, we still need to respect our service men. I think everyday needs to be Memorial Day, when it comes to our troops.
