    It would be nice to see a Nikon with 16bit NEFs

    Very good to see canon moving forward. I’m looking forward to their high end bodies hitting the market sometime soon… hopefully.
    There a plenty of birders with consumer level canon cameras that would love to move to universal shutter. Hopefully some exciting times for canon just around the corner. Thanks again Matt. 👍🏻

    The pixel size is not 6.4, but half - 3.2! In global shutters half of the pixels are used as a buffer, so only half of the FF sensor surface has actual pixels. That's why the base ISO for Sony A9 III is 250 to compensate for the half size of the pixels! So, this is yet another 48MP sensor, but Canon uses even less than the 24MP actual pixels!

    Thanks for the Canon roundup, Matt. Will global go global? Hard to say but it seems to be the next big thing. Not something I'm waiting for with bated breath ... but choice is a good thing.

    Until global can meet or exceed the range & performance of stacked - and someday, it will - I'm in an ideal spot with the Z8/9. I'm in no rush at all for global, for my use case. The R5II is now rumored to have a stacked 45mp sensor with no mechanical shutter as well. All interesting and fun to follow along, it amazes me how fast this tech moves.

    Well it's interesting watching the march of technology. Personally I'm not interested in a global shutter camera, we had them with CCD chips in the past. I'm sure there will be uses and demand from some disciplines but my Z8 Nikon is honestly enough camera for me. Thanks for keeping us up to date Matt.

    Canon have global shutter sensors from years ago for industrial and medical use. Canon can decide to sell with a contract of use, so they could sell you a batch of sensor only for your use, not allowing to use them in mirrorless hybrid cameras.

    I would love to see anything new from Nikon at this point in time regarding camera bodies. Where are the Nikon Z5ii / Z6iii / Z7iii / Z50ii / Z70? I, personally want the 3rd generation of mid level bodies to materialize to replace my aging z6 and z7. And my feeling is that I am not alone :)

      I have noticed this too. And I have now observed it is happening on the RUclips end. All vids are re-rendered and resized by RUclips. My uploads are not that dark. I will reach out to RUclips. I think the same is happening to thumbnail nails.

    Camcorders use global sensors. It’s not that surprising that Canon has this. But the limitation is base iso like in the A9iii. This is only good for sports and action.

      No it is not. In the past 2 month I shot more than 30'000 pictures with my A9III not only in sports, but in many low light conditions in the ISO range 1000-51200. And suprise, the DR is better than the Z8 and Z9 in that range ISO range.

    I do not want a global shutter at a flagship camera, if it has any negative effect on dynamic range. Global shutter only makes sense for fast moving subjects or portrait photographers how need an ultra fast flash sync speed.

      @@renestaempfli1071 Perhaps but you can't crop a 24mp image like you can a 45mp image. I can shoot in DX mode on the Z9 and still get decent image size. That's why I used to shoot with both a D4/5/6 and a D850. It all depends on your application. For me, a global shutter doesn't bring many (or any) advantages and may bring some unwanted baggage.

    60fps is NOT 120fps; 12 bit is NOT 14 bit; higher film frame rates at 120p with no crop does matter. Close but no cigar until it is in a functioning consumer camera body. And dont think Sony is sitting still with its 24.6mp global shutter, trust me, more is coming. We always knew Canon was working on this global shutter sensor for a consumer camera for years, but Sony was the first to market and again Canon needs to catch up. The global shutter sensor wars is just starting to heat up. Cheers

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  2 месяца назад +1

      In video the Sony can manage 4K which is not 5.7K. In stills the 120 FPS last for 1.6 seconds. And I think moving from 12bit - 14 bit is about the backs side ram and pipeline, not the actual sensor, so could be built how ever the end user wants to build in out, including how Canon might want to. And of course RED already have 8K 120FPS 17 stops dynamic range. www.red.com/v-raptor

    • @6gwilliams
      @6gwilliams 2 месяца назад +1

      @@MattIrwinPhotography the A9III does 4k at up to 120p with no crop. We have no idea if the Canon 6K comes with a crop. And more importantly your camera has to have a processor that can handle a global shutter, so Canon had better be selling these with an appropriate processor too. Red's global shutter is crop mode (APS-C), not Full frame, a different thing. The Sony A9III is an actually fully fleshed out and functioning consumer camera with a full frame global shutter. . Canon is only talking about a sensor, but no camera. FYI, I have Sony A1, A9III, A7RV. I know Canon fans want to say they have all that Sony has, ALWAYS, LOL. FYI, As an International Award Winning Photojournalist, I shot pro Canon, Nikon and Leica for 40+ years before moving over to Sony ,and Sony is still the fullframe mirrorless leader in innovation and tech. Unless Canon puts its consumer global shutter into a camera before the Olympics or in trial bodies in use at the Olympics, the majority of pro global shutters in use by sports pros there will be Red camera users and Sony A9III users. I will hold my praise for Canon until I see what camera they put this in and release for us pros to use. Did you see that noted film director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh shot his latest feature film entirely with the A9III. Sports, Wildlife and Movie Pros around the world are actually using the Sony A9III, are they using this Canon sensor, we dont know. Cheers and thanks.

      @@6gwilliams The spec states on the Canon, with no crop. As for the RED, the RED RAPTOR 8K 120FPS 17 DR camera is basically the same size as 35 mm, but in Vista Vision format so the ratio is a little different. Check out the link I posted above. The RED Komodo 6K is a super 35mm which is basically APSC. This camera is a a few years old, same price as the Sony and also shoots global. There is no crop, as it is a cropped sensor, so it is full sensor read out.

    • @6gwilliams
      @6gwilliams 2 месяца назад +1

      @@MattIrwinPhotography lets see if Nikon can put these Red global shutter sensors in a still camera. I have pro friends who use Red global shutter video cameras and love them, but using that same sensor for a fully fleshed out and functioning still camera will require some re-engineering, even Nikon reps I know have told me that. I am more interested to see what Nikon does with Red global shutters , than what Canon is doing, really. I share your videos in my Facebook Photography groups I admin. and mod. in, so I am not bashing you here, I am a subscriber. But folks tend to get carried away at every little thing Canon says they have, and then we wait forever for it to be released into a consumer camera (lol, R1). Let's see where this goes, and you been around long enough to know the A9III is not the ultimate global shutter sensor camera we will get from Sony, and the top Sony Manager I know has said as much to me. Back at WPPI in 2020 he hinted at what would become the A9III, and so more is likely to come from Sony and all makers. Panasonic and Fuji together have also been working on one. . I know you have to report the news, but please try and keep calm about it until we have real global shutter consumer cameras, as Sony did with the A9III. No premature hype . Cheers and best to you .
