- We're taking another stab at Canadian $2 Coins (Toonies), despite the risk of finding counterfeit coins. In particular, we're hoping to find the new colour and non-colour 2023 toonies commemorating National Indiginous Peoples Day. In addition, we'll be looking for other errors/varieties and low mintage coins.

I have a pretty sizeable instagram coin page and have been an avid collector of Canadian coins for my entire life.
I grabbed a box of toonies from... I'm afraid to even say which bank these days in Canada.... That's a whole other issue though.
Needless to say I was absolutely horrified by the amount of counterfeit toonies I was given by a bank.
It was so bad I haven't collected for about a year now.
The only person so far caught with any fakes was given less than a year and they had 26k enroute in the mail and 14k at his residence. 1 year?
This nation is on life support and noone seems to care.
It really is crazy how may are out there. Others have told me they've stopped hunting toonies altogether.

Do you take the fakes back to the bank?
I've brought the fakes back to the bank and they've exchanged them for me. I have no idea what they do with them, though!
@@CADRollHunter That makes sense. It sure wouldn't be right for you/us to get stuck with them
How do we dispose of counterfeits?
I'm not actually sure myself. Early on I used to take them to the bank and they'd exchange then for real ones. I haven't done that in a while, and the article suggests they won't take them back.

Found one indigenous Saturday, it was an ender with coloured side visible!
I found a Balboa quarter from 1995 from Panama when I got $5 in American quarters and I got $4.75 in American quarters and $0.25 in Panama quarters

That's right - I just roll them right back up and take deposit them. Sometimes I'll trade them for another box right away.

That was a hot box! I don't care about A and B lettering orientation. You posted a related short before this video XD. I'm annoyed by the low mintage of the commemoratives because, after a few years, they're pretty much gone.

This number of fakes makes me wonder if at any point Canada will want to demonetise all toonies without security features - you know, like the UK did with brass pound coins. Do you know anything about it?
I've heard nothing from any authorities on this. However, if the problem gets worse (or persists, I suppose, considering I think it's already really bad with millions of fakes likely in circulation), demonitization of the older toonies will be inevitable.

In the past 4 months I have not found a single fake toonie and then again recently I started to find them again.
I believe (and I have no evidence except my own hunts) that these fakes continue to be manufactured and introduced into the coin supply. It's possible there was a bit of a break, but I think they're back at it, in force.
On that first knowledge toonie take a look at the 2 for 2 dollars. Looks to have a die chip on the curve

Why aren’t the banks doing a better job of weeding out these fake toonies!? Presumably you bought the box from a bank, so why don’t they remove the fakes from circulation, this doesn’t help public confidence in the money supply if that many are out there.
The banks aren't even opening rolls coming in, and the tellers can't actually tell them apart!

A really great hunt James, the new commemorative, looks awesome, but at the start of the video, you didn't change the coins in the background to the toonies the same with Australian coins aswell we have alot in circulation (only commemorative coins) with the double date but what i find odd is that Australia never released a memorial coin for queen elizabeth 😂
Sometimes it's hard to keep track of those intros and the background pics!

Nice finds James! Have you ever complained at your bank about the fakes?
I haven't complained, per se, but I have brought the fakes back and they've exchanged them. They were more curious than anything. The tellers didn't seem aware there were fakes. I really believe that the almost nobody is actually aware and most would never be able to tell the difference, and so they just circulate. If it gets worse, it's just a matter of time before all of the older toonies get recalled, like they did in the UK with the old 1 Pound coins.
@CADRollHunter I'm glad the bank took them back! You also mentioned the security features so I'd indeed expect all coins from before 2012 to be removed in future.
@@Alrik. Me, too. It's possible they might stop doing that at some point. Interstingly, the topic of the fakes came up in a conversation with a coin dealer the other day. He said he didn't care much and that because almost nobody can tell them apart, they're just as good as real money, as far as he was concerned. So, he's certain he's accepting them, and spending them because he can't even tell the difference. That right there is the problem!

@@CADRollHunterI am also making great progress, so far I have two 2023 Canadian coins and one American 2023 coin, the American one is a 2023 Bessie Coleman quarter, I cannot find the quarter but I do have it, so I cannot tell you where it's minted from, now it's on to the Canadian coins, I have a 2023 dime, and a 2023 quarter, so I have 35 cents in 2023 coins if we were talking about just Canada's Coins, I also have two black ringed Toonies, that's enough to make a toonie sandwich, If you have a normal one

Nice hunt. Sad there were so many counterfeits though. I would say in regards to the edge lettering, that i would just go for 1 coin of each date.

Man! Sorry about all the fakes! But that old style 2012 was nice. And yes! I do collect both the A and the B orientations for the newer Toonies.. (am I a sucker? -- I guess I can always spend them in a pinch! 😀)
To each their own, I suppose! I know some American collectors who do the same with their $1 coins that have the edge lettering. It's clearly a variety that can be collected, but there's no evidence to support that any one of these varieties is more scarce than the other, so personally I don't feel there's any reason to collect them! But, as you say, if you change your mind, you haven't lost a thing!
I don't care either about A or B orientation . Still haven't found any of the 2023s (toonie or loonie) yet. Nor have I found a fake 2006 or 2007 so far. That was a cool hunt video. Thanks for posting it.

A friend of mine who is a US agent tells me that like counterfeited US collectables, a large portion of the counterfeit toonies are made in China.
That seems to be the concensus. It's big business over there. Apparently there are hundreds (or more) factories pumping out fakes for just about everything.
It's nice that you can find so many varieties but not so nice there are so many counterfeit coins.I love that Canada colorized their coins.They are beautiful coins.Thanks for the video.

Good video, I enjoy your roll hunting other than the fakes. I buy new rolls of toonies and perhaps I could find other collectors to trade off with. The mint told me that RCM rolls contain between MS62-MS64 or higher
You might do well buying those new rolls and trading - and maybe getting the best of them graded. You could find something even higher grade than that, potentially.
@@CADRollHunter Grading is expensive unless you get a reasonable lot size assessed. I've only had paper currency graded( Kitchener). Not sure what a whole roll of toonies would cost to be all graded. With your microscope you could put a MS 65 + on the viewer and show why it's graded at that level. Then put one of you really great coins( same year) on the viewer as a comparison. It would make an interesting five minutes.
@@andyboyko2766 If you're in the Kitchener area, I'd highly recommend coming out to one of the Waterloo Coin Society's future meetings (second Tuesday at the month at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium). One of the members regularly puts in ICCS submissions and gets the best, bulk rate (I believe $10 per coin) - and he'll take it to Toronto and bring it back at no cost (since he's already going for his own submissions.
As for the toonies, I'd scope the entire roll and only have the best of the best graded, maybe only a handful will make the cut.

Great hunt! So what do you do with the fakes? When new coins come out I go to my bank and eventually I score a roll or two of the new coin both colorized and plain. This way they are uncirculated as well. Happy hunting!
