I'm finally moving away from the Vector to a SpeedyBee Wing without your videos, i would have blown my brains out by now. Excellent info and presentation.
I live in California and I always wait for your posting which comes out late. This video couldn’t have come at a better time. Going to try it tomorrow. Bringing my laptop with me. Thx Lee!
Amazing!!! This helped the explain more on the settings than the newest how to inav for beginners. Still great info. I was stuck on the perm launch with no motors spinning at idol. I thought I did something wrong, but it was just waiting for me to throw the plane into the air. Lol great job again.
I've used INAV auto launch on several plane/wings but have found that the Flex Innovations (Flight Test) - AURA 5 LITE with 3-axis and 6-axis is the easiest flight controller to use, it's much cheaper and is very effective for wings. The AURA 5 LITE although set up for Spectrum it works perfectly with many other systems. I've now 5 x AURA 5 Lite FC's and use it with my Futaba 14SG, 18SZ, Taranis, RadioMaster and Jumper systems. The launch assist feature on the AURA 5 is ideal for launching wings and has worked faultless for me every time I've used it.
@@carrboro_chapelhillfpv2442 that is the only downside to the Aura 5. Another favorite of mine is the Bigaole BGL-6G-AP RTH, it has Return To Home with 3-Axis but it doesn't have launch assist.
Hey Lee, another great useful video. Caveat for maiden flights....you cannot have anyone else from another household touch any of your models or gear, at least in the UK currently.
Last question, I have a Maytek F405 that I plan to use with my freedom fox and headtracker do you have a video on a fix-wing that has two servos for flaparon.
I think I found a video, Virus lock down build 3, Thanks again for your help with this Hobby. I know that there's a lot of people that watch your videos to help make it easier to keep up in this Hobby.
You can also dry launch, throw them without power but with controls, to see CG and glide---- power off/ deadstik. If you are thinking it does not have inertia and speed it is a paperweight.
Brilliant! This feature is one reason why I want to put a FC into my Twisted Hobby's Zorro which has been converted to a 4S, quad motored FPV wing. I normally launch by holding the front of the wing, applying half power and pretty much just letting go. I guess would have to radically alter my launch technique for inav as it seems it needs more initial movement speed.
From building racing quads to wings BIG DIFFERENCE I am crashing but hot glue is pulling me through. just got my first 7 laps in on the zohd dart at the park Los so progress is being made 👍
Ordering a flight controller & GPS tonight so I can use this. I bought a Strix Nano Goblin a few weeks ago and have tried to launch it a couple dozen times. Result has been a couple dozen nose dives into the ground. Luckily the only damage so far has been a chip in the propeller.
I'll be finally rest-flying with H743 this weekend. Think it is almost ready. One thing I really can't tell is how to "initiate" launch. Here, you say "arm it". Does that mean un-select motor kill and make it run ? If so, should motor be running before throwing ? Reason asking is mine starts running at about 1/3 throttle. Haven't yet tested after setting launch parameters. Or is it just the initial un-commanded (hand) acceleration that initiate a launch (as long as parameters are properly setup) ?
As always, great videos. I am already flying my AR 900 Wing with good results but with Matek F 405 Wing Controller. What Autolaunch configuration should I put on a Big Skywalker 2110 X8 Wing? Thanks
It depends on the thrust you get from the motor and prop. I find that you need the prop spinning at a decent rate (1400 or more) before the throw to get it into the air.. Best of luck!
Lee, Great videos for sure.... Having issues with autolaunch engaging when I throw the plane. It will work sometimes, but only about 25% of the time. I have two planes that have the same issue (Dart 250g and AR Wing Pro). Both F411wse INAV 2.6. I noticed on a recent failed attempt FPV screen video that my throttle % isn't at 100 when I throw it. I push the stick up to full, but it seems like the percent of throttle is a bit behind. Should I wait a few seconds after I give it full throttle to throw it? Is it possible that my ESC isn't calibrated or on a soft start? Not sure what I'm doing wrong. The Zohd Dart 250g CLI: set nav_fw_launch_velocity = 200 set nav_fw_launch_accel = 1200 set nav_fw_launch_max_angle = 180 set nav_fw_launch_detect_time = 40 set nav_fw_launch_thr = 2000 set nav_fw_launch_idle_thr = 1200 set nav_fw_launch_motor_delay = 100 set nav_fw_launch_spinup_time = 100 set nav_fw_launch_min_time = 2000 set nav_fw_launch_timeout = 10000 set nav_fw_launch_max_altitude = 5000 set nav_fw_launch_climb_angle = 25 Appreciate any help, Will
Excellent Video thank you. But why do you need to push the throttle all the way to the top when iNav has had max throttle and min throttle already set ?
Hi Lee, thanks for the video. I've followed your steps and configured the AR Wing Pro with it, but I haven't been able to launch the wing succesfully. It went straight down and even broke the motor mount. Do you perhaps have settings specifically for the AR Wing Pro?
Hi Mr. P I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but I failed to get the CLI to work ? I'm so new to computers and not sure if I am typing in the right way. I can't see the screen very well and I think I'm missing something, I typed in lower-case, nav_fw_launch and set to how you did it but when I hit enter I get a error ? Could you please let me know what way I should type in a command. I have a new AR Wing pro and I have a H743 wing, Caddx Ratel starlights, AKK DOMINATOR, and I don't know if it would work very well but I wanted to add a pan-tilt where the DJI system would go . I thought I could get it working correctly then get a pan-tilt for my freedom fox airplane. Thanks again for all of your help through the years.

Do these commands apply to Inav 6.0 as well? Tried these on my mini drak and i can get model to arm but i have no motor controls, this is in manual mode at this time. Thanks for any input!
Any tips for a high power pusher that will likely torque roll alot please? Ideally I want it to launch at a very steep angle (ill overhead throw it) and gain speed as it sorts out the torque roll and level out.
Can you please explain what the units are? Time appears to be ms, but how about velocity, acceleration etc? Also is there a way to avoid having to get the throttle to 100%? That's kinda sketchy when have a 5" prop trying to push 2kw
What's the reason for not having nav_fw_launch_thr at 100% even with lighter models? Wouldn't you want max power during take-off, or are you leaving margin to power-out of a obstacle, etc?
Should it be in any other modes before throwing and can that affect it? I think I had horizon mode on and 3 times it dived straight into the ground. The motor had came off the other day and I glued it back on, and while I think its still pointing down the planes centre I am worried its perhaps thrusting slightly off center. Other things it may be is that horizon mode, or maybe needing a recalibration. What happened when autolevel/autotune are activated when its sitting on the desk? New to INAV and just trying to rule out possible causes of bad attitude sensing. It has flown two perfect flights on its maiden so this is all new issues and perhaps just inexperience of INAV for me.
Horizon is what is use. Sounds like your level, FW offset and launch angle needs checking. Alps you may need more thrust before/after throw so increase... Best of luck

Only worked it out by watching another video of yours on prop direction so thanks x2 :)
Fantastic video, but I have a question, being somewhat unrelated. Sometimes I accidentally disarm the plane while in flight. It doesn’t seem to rearm when I flip the switch and I’m forced to do an emergency landing. Worried I might do it miles out. How do I make it arm-able always?
There are ways around it but I would strongly suggest that the arming switch is completely seperate for the ones you'd use when flying... Best of luck!
Supposing I had a MPX funjet with thrust vectoring on a f7 controller with INAV. Can I use auto launch to launch it vertically straight up due to the torque roll?? LOL..
I discovered an issue with autolaunch with INAV 5.1. When I set nav_fw_launch_idle_thr = 1300, the launch goes just fine. But after launch, I am not able to get the throttle back down to zero. So when I come in for a landing, I had to disarm to cut the motor and bring it in for a landing safely. Just wondering if others have the same issue.
I'd Try it without the reciever or HD system powered to illiminate possible causes... Best of luck it to the developers by logging a bug report on Github... Happy flying
Well I can’t say much but another excellent video. Now with your experience what would be a good setup for a Nano Drak with 40in wings for long flight time on a 4s battery. Cheers and keep those great vids coming.
Hi, I had a few unsuccessful auto-launch attempts on my AR Wing Pro until I increased idle throttle to 70-80. Does that sound normal? I'm throwing it from my side and I'm not very good at it yet. I noticed the eleven throws are very tiny in auto-launch (they are ok in manual mode), is that how it should be? I'm concerned it doesn't do enough to correct itself after a poor throw from my hand.
@@Painless360 It is iNav, I meant 1700-1800 (I still prefer to think in %). At this level, I can feel the thrust and after my throw it picks up just before it hits the ground. It still doesn’t feel right it needs such a high idle throttle. The model is not particularly heavy: just 4s1p 18650, no GoPro just balancing weight instead to get CG right.
Autolaunch work superbly with my plane , but i need to touch the aileron stick if i want the rth work , is it correct or i need another setup to change in INAV ? Thank's for your help , it give me a lot of information that help me to not crash my plane !!
Autolaunch will time out after the time you set in the CLI commands (covered in this video). Then it will fall back into the mode you have set on the radio (again, covered in the video) and you can select RTH as the mode before throwing so it goes into RTH at the end of the launch or my touching one of the sticks to cancel the launch before the timeout (again in the video).. It's all in there ;) Hope that helps..
Awesome vídeo. One question regarding throttle, how do I know if my model is heavy or not. I’m using a S800 Reptile, should I increase it to 1850 as you did? Just want to know what is the criteria to know if a wing is heavy or light. Appreciate it
Without knowing the weight of that model and the motor and prop you're using its hard to tell.. Its one of those things that comes with experience but it is better to err on the side of caution and use more thrust.. Happy flying
Thanks! I have the Enhanced Dart XL and noticed that wiggle in straight & level flight. Mine had a setting of 2 that I will now bump up to 8. I also noticed in loiter that the nose and corresponding engine rpm go up and down as it circles. Will this setting effect that as well?
@@Painless360 set nav_fw_control_smoothness. I think that INAV controls altitude via throttle which is why in loiter, it does that constant slow sine wave of changing RPM. I'm wonder if bumping this setting to improve flight stability will also improve loiter?
so question.... if you accidentally disarm in flight how do you rearm with autolaunch permanently enabled... also, how do you stop a screwed up launch. ie it noses into the ground do you just hit the disarm switch i assume ? what if you have A/L on a switch? I assume you set a/l before you arm right?
Hey Painless I've got a question : Do you , or have you, got an error that says " unable to arm , pitch and roll not centered " message when trying to arm with launch mode. I got this error and the only way to get it to go away was to center my pitch and roll trims on my radio .
Was going to use Auto Launch today but when I checked INAV in the field, the Roll and Pitch numbers on the setup page are steadily just increasing at about 0.2 degrees per second. Is there something I’ve missed in the INAV setup??
I need a bungee to launch my 5' wing as I cant toss an 8lb wing fast enough for auto launch to work. So I have been using a bungee and it gets in the air easily. Currious if there would be a way to still launch with the bungee, and not having to worry about fumbling with the controller. Any thoughts or ideas?
Autolaunch would work but you'd have to think about how you wanted the prop to behave and how long after the launch you wanted INAV to wait until it takes over.. Let me know how you get on! :D
@@Painless360 thats what im afraid of. Have broken a motor mount in the past because the bungee line got wrapped up in the prop. Now that it is snowing here not sure more much more flying i will be doing sadly

So I've been out of the hobby since nearly the beginning of the year, but did everyone jump ship to these new Jumper radios? Is my original Taranis not "cool" anymore?I have so many Frsky receivers, the original ones before all the access protocol stuff.
Yeah, things move at an incredible pace. I still have my 9XD+ and loads of 'old' receivers still flying but I have ventured and got a TBS Micro transmitter and some receivers. Range is so much better now though. For some reason the LUA scripts don't work for setting up the TBS stuff 'in radio' but it's easy enough through the TBS Agent X interface.

Great video as usual. Do these particular wings have tendencies to Twork roll when the throttle kicks in? Any advice would be great. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Hello, did you correct the problem? Move your center of gravity forward and check the capacity of the motor and propeller so that it does not stall, that model is heavy. Greetings
@@Painless360 I suggested to the iNav community it would be great to have another feedback mechanism that the model is ready to go other that the motor. I think I’m banished 😂😂😂 Although I think I might start the motors up now as apparently it can help with torque roll. My models do suffer badly with this in autolaunch if the motors are at a standstill. Still my understanding is for safety reasons sometimes an idle isn’t possible hence why another feedback mechanism would be a great feature.
Is the 'Autolaunch' message across the OSD not enough confirmation? The second confirmation is holding the wing you'll see the elevons trying to achieve up pitch.

Cheers and keep those great vids coming.
I've not tried the longer wings but expect to still use the same power system..
Does this work with manual/angle/acro/horizon mode when I throw the plane?
Yes, I'd recommend Horizon... Happy flying
70-80? That isn't INAV then?
@@Painless360 It is iNav, I meant 1700-1800 (I still prefer to think in %). At this level, I can feel the thrust and after my throw it picks up just before it hits the ground. It still doesn’t feel right it needs such a high idle throttle. The model is not particularly heavy: just 4s1p 18650, no GoPro just balancing weight instead to get CG right.
Ah, I see. For some models here I need 50% idle jumping to 90-95% when thrown.. depends on the model, motor and prop used... best of luck
Autolaunch work superbly with my plane , but i need to touch the aileron stick if i want the rth work , is it correct or i need another setup to change in INAV ? Thank's for your help , it give me a lot of information that help me to not crash my plane !!
Check out the INAV for beginners 2020 series for all the steps
@@Painless360 Thank's for your answer ! I watch all the videos but didn't find the answer , that's why i ask !
@@Painless360 oki thank's !
Which setting are you changing?
@@Painless360 set nav_fw_control_smoothness. I think that INAV controls altitude via throttle which is why in loiter, it does that constant slow sine wave of changing RPM. I'm wonder if bumping this setting to improve flight stability will also improve loiter?
so question.... if you accidentally disarm in flight how do you rearm with autolaunch permanently enabled... also, how do you stop a screwed up launch. ie it noses into the ground do you just hit the disarm switch i assume ? what if you have A/L on a switch? I assume you set a/l before you arm right?
If you're planning on disarming in flight then set it as a mode. Top tip :don't disarm in flight ;) Happy flying!
thank you sir for this tutorial.im new to inav.
Hi Lee. Would you say these recommendations still stand today (July-24)?
I'm still using the same settings... Happy flying
Hey Painless I've got a question : Do you , or have you, got an error that says " unable to arm , pitch and roll not centered " message when trying to arm with launch mode. I got this error and the only way to get it to go away was to center my pitch and roll trims on my radio .
You need to setup the midpoints on the radio properly. Check out the video on it in the INAV for beginners 2020 series.. Best of luck
@@Painless360 thank you , much appreciated
Lee, is these sittings still a good ideas to use for Inav 3.0+ ?
See my INAV 3.0 FW setup mini series ;) Starts tomorrow!
Was going to use Auto Launch today but when I checked INAV in the field, the Roll and Pitch numbers on the setup page are steadily just increasing at about 0.2 degrees per second. Is there something I’ve missed in the INAV setup??
Every step I use is in the video.. Best of luck
For autolaunch is it better to first launch the plane in manual mode and get it dialed in or its better to just jump into autolaunch straight away?
See my pro tips video in the playlist. I cover that and more... Happy flying
What's the second, forward facing antenna on the wing?
At what point in the video? There isn't a forward facing antenna...
Where do i find inav auto launch in inav configurator 2.6.0 in modes tab
Not sure, not used 2.6 in anger yet..
If you're in manual mode is auto launch still active.
Yes, until you move the sticks and then you're in manual mode... Happy flying
In pixhawk hardware would it auto takeoff setting waypoint without airspeed sensor
See my PixHawk series. Airspeed sensor is best but you can make it work without..
Time for an update? A lot of things have changed since-like new FC's
Nope. I still set it up in exactly the same way as INAV 7.1.. Happy flying
@@woogieman02 I'm in Alaska, but still fly (Will be getting back into the Air after a 5 year hiatus) this Thanks Giving week (2020) due to weather finally being above zero. One thing I would suggest. I'm sure you probably have video footage (somewhere) of one of your launches. Just see how long it takes to "clear" the bungie system (line dropping) and add a second or two to that. Put the total time in the CLI for the launch delay. I myself will be doing lots of solo-bungie launches this next year and that is my plan. Best of luck!
0:45 -1:20 is why I haven't maiden my fixed wing I built more than a year ago. I fly drones, but have never flew a fixed wing.
I wish someone was in my area 🤦♂️
With autolaunch, you can chuck it and it should do the rest!
What is your favorite Inav for fixed wing?
See my kit picks 2020 video for my choices. Something new coming very soon too.. Stay tuned
Could be a few things. Pulling too many amps from the ESC, ESC needs calibration... What have you already done?
@@Painless360 спасибо друг, проблема в регуляторе
So im guessing that these CLI settings would work fine on a nano talon??
Should do...
@@Painless360 ...thank you for your reply !!
Does i-nav auto launch require a GPS ?
Not sure, I always add a GPS to my models for RTH, height speed and distance telemetry.. Let me know if it does..
Any tips for transitioning off kopilot?
Practice as much as possible on full manual mode. Learn to fly without the help. Then you can move onto anything. Happy flying
@@Painless360 Hi - just seen all these cli settings are now under Advanced Settings tab :)
still wondering why not set "launch-thr" to 2000... In real planes, our instructor gives us negative points if we do not open throttle all the way at take off
If your model needs full power then do that. Happy flying
So I've been out of the hobby since nearly the beginning of the year, but did everyone jump ship to these new Jumper radios? Is my original Taranis not "cool" anymore?I have so many Frsky receivers, the original ones before all the access protocol stuff.
See my Kit Picks 2020 video. I cover it all there.. happy flying
FrSky and Crossfire are still 'A' grade kit.. I'd expect that the OpenTX on the radio needs updating.. Best of luck!
@@Painless360 Thanks, I'm not at home right now but pretty sure I'm using 2.2.3 Open tx. I checked the Hardware section of the radio and there is no Baud rate listed as in some video's. I'm going to upgrade the Open tx and was inclined to go tom 2.2.4 (small steps) or would you jump straight into 2.3.10?
I'd do whatever the upgrade notes say.. I've not made that big a jump in a while..
I know you have loads of wings..... do you have any for sale? Btw I’m based in uk too :) cheers
I dont usually sell them but do pass some on to Patreons.. happy flying
Is a GPS necessary for this?
It depends on what you want to do. See the rest of the series..
@@Painless360 thanks, making my way through them now. I have the fc but no GPS yet. Mainly want it for nav launch but will probably use other features once I get a GPS. Thanks for the great content!
"permanent auto launch" wouldn't allow me to arm, have 3 quick beeps when I'd arm and motor wouldn't spin up
Great video as usual. I am really struggling with this auto launch on my AR wing Pro (using iNAV and a Matek F722 WPX Flight controller).I tried so many different settings on the launch throttle from 1600 to 1900 and no matter what happens, no matter how level I throw it it Twork’s real hard to the left and goes right into the ground. Do these particular wings have tendencies to Twork roll when the throttle kicks in? Any advice would be great. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Not really. See my ARWing Pro maiden video using these settings.. Best of luck
Hello, did you correct the problem? Move your center of gravity forward and check the capacity of the motor and propeller so that it does not stall, that model is heavy. Greetings
👍
thenks
I like a bit of idle throttle so I'm sure autolaunch is active when I throw.
its exactly why I do it as well. When I go to full throttle and see my prop spinning at idle, I know its ready to go!
Yep - me too! :D Lots of pilots don't like it but for me it's a confirmation it's ready to go!
@@AdamGdoesFPV I usually throw with goggles on my forehead and the ailerons going up helps indeed.
Thanks!
thank you for another great video
