    I live in America, and found a Hornby Princess Royal, R30001 on Amazon US. A bit pricey for me, at $230 (I didn't pay $25 for faster shipping lol - I might change that, but I dunno), and I'm really excited! It's my first model train, and I think it's a good one to start with! Can't wait 'till it arrives... in a month

    What a lovely locomotive, I have several Princesses including tender drive versions. Only one has given me problems, I sent it back to Hornby and they repaired it, no hassles. As you said some very minor things let it down, but on the whole I'm very pleased with mine.

    one of my favourite LMS locomotives I'm so glad Hornby didn't disappoint with this one great review as always sam hop to see more of this model in the future
    p.s i think some of the quality errors are just transport handling (apart from the glue marks that's factory error) and i prefer the pony truck to be articulated

    Hi Sam, how are you? So.. I recently lost the nem socket on the tender of this model, it has been falling of ever since I got the model 🤔. Now I have lost it for good, I am not sure what to do, I live in Portugal so it might be a pain to get a replacement from hornby. Is there another way to get it, if not, can I get it from hornby at all? Thank you for the wonderful review anyway, keep up the good work, wait, this video came out a while ago, keep up the current good work!

    I just found out something really interesting. The fact that new hornby engines have flangeless and non pivoting back axles so actually to make them more realistic in a cool way. its trying to represent the Cartazzi axle, which is an axle that doesnt pivot but instead shifts from side to side in its axle boxes to accommodate tight curves. And, since model train tracks are much too tight for the wheel to actually work, they make them flangeless

    Hello Sam. Thank you for the great video. I received my Princess Elizabeth yesterday, but there aren't any glue marks on it. My Hornby Terrier didn't have any glue marks, either. It seems odd that you would have had two bad experiences with glue marks. I wonder if any other of your viewers have experienced glue marks.

    Hi Sam, A cotton swab soaked in a bit of vinegar shouldn’t hurt the paint, try it on a hidden spot & check to see if any color transfers to the the swab. At least you are in the UK, and you can complain to Hornby on a local basis. Being in the US, returning something to the UK isn’t very feasible. Since they use CA fumes to bring up fingerprints, perhaps someone in a crime lab knows a way to remove the CA fog without damage to the original article. Good luck!

    I had this one when i was a child in 1961 so i presume it was one of the first ones, mine had Smoke deflectors though and it was all metal in those days, i still have the Transformer kicking around. I find that when you buy first batch models there is always a few issue, I always wait and then buy. The only reason I preordered the other models is due to them being 100th anniversary models. I find it you go with a tooth pick you can scratch off the white), or with rubbing alcohol you can take a cocktail stick and lightly dab it in the alcohol ( it shouldn’t be damp ). These are two things I do

    Being something of a customizer my self I think it would deserve a solid 5. The glue marks are easily dealt with. The mechanicals is where the value is for me. Great appearance and performance to back it up. Ive seen too many reviews where it looks astounding but falls down on its performance staggeringly. Just my opinion.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

      Thanks a lot for sharing! The ease of correcting issues isn't a factor though - the issues were there - for review purposes, that's what counts! The performance wasn't perfect, but I certainly didn't have the problems that others did!

    This model looks very good. I have the previous model (46207 'Princess Arthur Of Connaught') and this engine is weak on the smokebox, the shape of the chimney, the motion bracket fitted on the later Princesses (and which was not fitted to 46200/46201). Trouble is, do I abandon my never used (my models sit in a cabinet and are not run) 46207 and buy the new one? I don't like the over bright pipework under the cab on the new one but the smokebox and wheels are terrific and an etched nameplate would make all my previous Hornby engines look so much better. A very fair review and very interesting.

    Hey Sam, my model came Thursday, all seems well and I'm very pleased with it. You could argue the price point for ever and a day however, they are not toys and are classed as luxury items and attract the higher price points, not sure what the answer to that is. To buy or not to buy?

    I absolutely love the massive amount of detail on this engine, where they splashed a bit of glue in the boiler I think it’s because Hornby got some clumsy workers, the detail on the interior of the cab is very well done especially where the cab doors are positioned open as well as the firebox doors, the firebox glow is amazing as well, and can you paint one of your steam locomotives to make it look like it’s weathered with the coal dust, ashes and soot all over the locomotive where the running number is barely visible, the spring buffers on the front of locomotive where they stick, that I’m a bit disappointed on, I’m looking forward on seeing more reviews like this in the future, have a great weekend

    Great review of a significant model. I want one in either BR blue or Maroon. BR green is too understated for a Princess IMHO. 14:28 I'm surprised people complained about that on an A4. The trucks under the cab of LNER pacifics actually don't pivot like other trailing wheels because they are Cartazzi axles which have flangeless wheels and a bit of sideways play on the axle but otherwise do not pivot or swivel. I'm not sure about the Lizzies, though.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

      Ahh really? I never knew that - I'd love to know if the Lizzies were like that!

    • @davidwhiting1761
      @davidwhiting1761 4 года назад

      @@SamsTrains It's pretty interesting to look at. I once saw a video on RUclips a few few years back with the A1 Locomotive Trust discussing how to Cartazzi axle worked in detail while Tornado was under construction. I can't find it anymore, unfortunately.

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 4 года назад

      @@SamsTrains Some confusion has come about here. The Cartazzi truck wheels would never be flangless as the flanges impart the sideways play to the axles. Otherwise they would just roll off the rails with disastrous results. It is a toy approach by Hornby to cope with toy radius tracks but having no daylight above the trailing truck. I would hope they found a better way.
      Even Triang, in 1962, pointed out that the minimum mainline radius used by BR would scale to 9 or 10 feet in 00, so letting users think of the compromises needed when moving away from exact scale. (Source page 21 of Triang First Ten Years book).
      The A1 trust provides a useful PDF :
      www.a1steam.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/TOPLINK6.PDF that on page 19, can be seen a diagram of the movement allowed and the flanges can be seen on the wheels. Also has more detail of the design by Francis James Cortazzi prior to his death in 1869 (so he got mis-spelt by sloppiness along the way) but importantly the problems involved with the design. In the 1930s Sir William Stanier was in India investigating the derailments of Indian Pacifics and the role this axle played in it. So would be interesting to find what Sir William Stanier thought of the design.
      From the P2 trust site can be seen the Cartazzi wheelset with the flanges clearly visible after the tyres, which have the flanges on them are clearly visible : www.p2steam.com/category/construction/page/4/
      Perhaps this flangless mis-information came about by someone jumping to the wrong conclusion after seeing contruction views of wheelsets before the wheel tyres had been fitted. The P2 trust give some good information on fitting the tyres if the whole document is read rather than looking at an early picture in isolation.
      Sam, do you have any contacts that can look at say a preserved A4, A3 , A2 or A1, say at York to try and see any mythical toy approach flangeless trailing wheels? Or ask someone involved with the full size locomotives and the LMS pacifics to give them a good laugh about flangless trailing wheels.
