In a world where there are less and less people who play cimbalom (sorry I don't know it's english name), this video is pure gold. Very nice playing indeed. Just breathtaking.
It is called concert cimbalom if it is being played in a non-Rákóczi style - and a cimbalom (or concert cimbalom if preferred) if in that dynamic style of performance.
I was asked to help her set up in the church next to my highschool where she played. I didn’t have the luck to hear her play, I had some place to go while she was playing and nearly broke my back trying to carry that very cimbalom because the other dude I carried it with was an idiot. Funny that youtube now decided that I should hear her anyway and recommended the video
It amuses me some of the comments about her "making mistakes," etc. Obviously these people aren't as familiar with the original piece as they fancy themselves--the DISSONANCE you're hearing is a part of the piece and serves an artistic purpose, which she has faithfully followed. That said... wonderful performance! Loved hearing one of my favorite pieces on one of my favorite instruments.
+Alexandra Lepsy Oh not at all. There's a few mistakes which are not the grace-note half-tones written in the original. I don't think they matter at all, but thinking that there's no mistakes is delusional.
You are obviously an informed and knowledgeable aficionado of music, if not a trained musician, and your observations are accurate. Dissonance is a western phenomenon which was the results of the introduction of the tempered scale in western music (13th to 14th.century) and does not exist in other musical systems which have microtonal characteristics. Many western composers incorporated such microtonal elements in their works, especially those of eastern European origins, but this is very often misinterpreted (in the west) as sour notes or dissonance. The eastern auditory system easily reconciles these notes as part of the musical scales to which they are attuned.
Fabulous, it reminds me of the Tom & Jerry version, deliciously chaotic but with closed eyes and imagining the cartoon I find it most enjoyable 😀 Without offence: this is an impressive performance of a hideously difficult piece, it´s indeed like playing "The Liszt" with only 2 fingers: CHAPEAU to you Elisabeth !!!
This is mind blowing. I love the sound, the performance, and let's just admire every single artistic choice made by the author of this 'translation' to another instrument. Fantastic.
This is one of my favorite pieces of music and this is the first time ever I heard it on this particular instrument. Just FANTASTIC! How can this get 38 Thumbs down?
Because people are idiots. Not only is it a wonderful piece of music, but it’s being played by a Hungarian who can actually feel the piece better than all the negative people
Bravo - I think it's wonderful that in an age where we have all of the more modern instruments, and music technology (synthesisers, computers etc) that somebody still dedicates themselves to properly playing a traditional instrument as you have done.
*****: finally someone who understands music. there are at least a hundred better cimbalom players only in Hungary, not to count Romania. I honestly can't explain all these positive comments. Probably this is their first time listening to this masterpiece.
Sebastian Gherghina People like you disgust me. You don't care about music and artists, and it's constant evolution due to, also, social context. You just care about your conception of music
Thank-you so much. My father played and built cimbalom and wound his own strings. Brings back so many memories. Is that a Bohák? Oh to any critics... Sit down behind one of these magnificent instruments.
Bravo ! Votre musicalité est enthousiasmante- nous sentons la vigueur que les personnes de ce pays ont eu et...que beaucoup de hongrois cultivent encore. Vive cette interprétation ! Respects à l'artiste...
Wow great. I was introduced to this wonderful instrument through it's appearance in the soundtrack for The Ipcress File. Amazing instrument and nicely performed. It is already hard to play that on the piano (for me) and I got 10 fingers to use, and she is as fast with only two "mallets". That's fantastic in my opinion.
This sounds very similar to early fortepiano models. I wonder if Cristoforti had a hammered dulcimer in mind when thinking of the mechanism, maybe a saletio could've inspired him.
Magnificent!!! It’s great to hear a proper classical piece rather than all those who are playing modern pop songs on Dulcimers. It looks like a big brother of the Hammered Dulcimer?
Saludos de la bella Guatemala, En piano complicada, en Marimba aún más complicada, en Cimbalom me parece imposible. Congratulaciones para la interprete.
It's an interesting thought, but probably not since this piece was composed in 1847, and the cimbalom wasn't invented until 1870, 16 years before Liszt's death. I do agree, though! They do seem like they were made for each other.
Does anybody know why this instrument is always used whenever there are movies about Sherlock Holmes or other films set in the 19th century Great Britain, and not just Britain.
I hear a few mistakes around 6:00 to 6:15 mark but wow, I think she did a great job but I'm not familiar with the actual music she's playing so I don't know about that but it sounded as if she did a great job with just a few little mis-hits.

I am definitely not very knowledgeable on music theory, but I'm just using my common sense and I think those "mistakes" a lot of you mentioned are simply limitations that come with adapting a piece to a different instrument. I definitely feel a lot of notes were missing but I'm pretty sure that's just because it's not possible to play the piece as is with only two hands on this instrument. Think about Toccata and Fugue, when you adapt it to piano it's definitely gonna miss a lot of things but that's not fault of the pianist. So it comes down to what part of the original piece she chose to express. You and I may not like some of her interpretation, but that's highly subjective and personal, imho.
Precisely, this was originally written for piano (ten fingers), so many chords are incomplete when using just two hammers, so naturally there are places that sound a bit rough, as this is a complex work. So Brava!
No matter who took this lady's piano apart and stole the keyboard away ,she still did an excellent job with just two tiny sticks.
A cimbalom has no keyboard. :)

It doesn't have an English name, but it's in the hammered dulcimer family.
It's called a cimbalom in English, but traditionally was often called the "gypsy piano." I met some French Tsiganes who still call it that.
