When I was in the B.A. our hex stoves didn’t have the top attachment for the cup. You either turned it upside down for a flat surface with the bottom up, or you angled the two side parts into sort of triangle shape to sit your mess tin or aluminum coffee mug. Tops a nice addition.
I have used every bit of that kit back in my army days , still use most of it still , a wee tip for the mess tins , cover the bottom in tin foil then pull it off when your done , saves cleaning the soot off the tin . Good video 👍🏻🏕
Great vid. Love using the old British Army kit.Built to last! I think every kid I knew, had an angled torch,in the 70’s/80’s. I’m still using an un issued Pattern 58 bag. Still really warm. We made do with the dim L-head flashlights in Basic training, but once we got to Iraq we realized we needed the brightest lights that we could afford. The LED bulbs were just coming on the market and the PX sold an LED conversion as well as AA battery adapter kits for the L-heads. That made them much better, but still no where near as bright as the cheapest Surefire. I use crusader kit but removed the water bottle so i can fit a small gas canister and a burner, plus a small back up burner if my main one fails, also have the base for solid fuels in the base with a couple of gel tablets just in case my gas runs out. Always have the way of making a brew! All fits in the crusader pouch.
Army surplus is great gear, provided you get it from a reliable source. Unfortunately, surplus has become a big business, with re- sellers charging a high mark up. It is important to search around and know the prices of gear from multiple suppliers.
I’ve got both aluminum mess tins, and I found a set of the Dutch stainless steel mess tins online About 6 months ago. Your PLCE canteen setup is the same as mine other than I carry 2 sets. I also usually carry 2-3Lt camelbak depending on what I’m doing and access to water. A guy gave me 6 of the hex stoves about 5 years ago they came out of BATUS still in the wrappers lol
Where did you get the lid, it looks like a proper manufactured one, I have a “cottage industry” one, but never seen ones like yours. I’d love to get one! Nice video, I started off with all surplus kit, I especially love the canvas poncho tents and bashas, but so, so heavy😟. It might be a tad politically incorrect at the moment, but I never let that get in the way, anyway, have you seen the Russian Ratnik basha. It really is a great bit of kit, a great improvement on our British one. Check it out, though may be difficult to acquire one in the present climate. Have been investing in some new-fangled ultra-light kit recently, for the sake of my poor back!🤷♂️😁
Thanks for watching Mat, and for the info on some other kit, I’ll certainly check that stuff out. As for the Crusader cup lid. It’s made by a company called Heavy Cover, they make all kinds of military style mess kits, and water bottles, but sadly they don’t make the crusader lid anymore ☹️ So it’s become very rare and even if you do find one, they are crazy money. All the best mate, Jay
Ta bud.... Love the stove. That is what I want. Your video sparked up exactly when I needed. . Am a Scotsman living in South Africa and heading to the local Army surplus store. Hoping to get what I what most of what I what/need. 😂

Top video jay! I'm a military surplus nerd also haha. I've got my long back Bergen all packed and waiting for my camp next week. You should do a video of all your surplus kit.. did you use modern clothing or was the boots and pants military issue? Keep safe brother 👍🏕️
Cheers for watching James. Yeah you really can’t beat the military surplus kit can you 😎 I’m planning on doing a surplus camp using kit from all different army’s, not just British, in the new year 😎👍🏻 As for the clothing I used, the boots and trousers where both British army issue kit, however the hoodie was just a regular one. All the best mate, and Merry Christmas, Jay
Nice one Jay, still fancy a army surplus camp myself. Had a old torch like that many years ago, definitely not as bright as modern versions, though I guess you wouldn't want to be blasting light everywhere revealing your position lol atb Mark

Nice gear, not sure if it still applies but when I was in the cdn military we were told not to drink the water we boiled those meal bags in because the aluminum foil could break down and release chemicals in the water something to think about or find out about if it’s still true
Thank you for watching, and also thanks for the heads up, I didn’t realise that to be honest. It’s always great to share knowledge 😎👊🏻 All the best buddy, and Merry Christmas, Jay
I enjoyed this vid, Jay. I didn’t know Lin PAC Plastics made the right angled torches. Gotta love a DPM Basha and bergan. I cannot find my hexi stove so ordering a new one. Merry Christmas to you and your family 🎄🎅🏼
Love that pack! And I wish I could find an affordable crusader mug, as much as I love my US Army canteen cup I love that British design. From what I hear they no longer issue canteens or cups, Camelbak bladders only. Crazy if you ask me. We never used bungee cords in the 80’s and I was surprised when I started seeing them on RUclips videos, like they were common! What size are you issued? Like what length and diameter of the cord? Is there a standard issue? Thanks, nice video.
Thank you for watching buddy. It really is a great pack isn’t it! Very well made and soo much storage! The Crusader cup is a great bit of kit, I’ve got various canteen cups from all different countries, and I have to say the crusader is my favourite 😎 All the best mate and Merry Christmas, Jay

Thanks for watching Karen. Yeah it took me a little while to get around to editing this one 😁 Ray was certainly going for the cowboy look 😁 Hope you and your family had a great Christmas, and all the best for the new year 😎
There’s no chance I’d be fit enough to do that 😁 Nothing but respect for the lads that serve in the military and do it though! 😎 Thanks for watching buddy, hope you enjoyed it! All the best, Jay
Awesome video mate, brings back memories from my time in the REME, love using my old issued kit for wildcamping and bysh craft, new subscriber here, im doing a similar video soon on my channel but not solely surplus kit, ta Stu.
Cheers Stu! Thank you for watching buddy, glad you enjoyed it! You can’t beat the surplus kit! I love it 😎 And thank you for subscribing too mate! Very much appreciated! 😎 All the best, Jay
The Crusader mug lid is made by a company called Heavy Cover, although they stopped making them a long time ago, so they are now very rare, and sell for loads more than the actual cup 😁 The plastic BCB lid is completely useless. If you have a look on eBay, there is a fella that makes custom crusader mug lids, out of aluminium though, not stainless steel like my Heavy Cover lid. They are great quality though, I have one myself. Hope that helps. All the best buddy, Jay
Nice video. I must admit I have everything featured in the vid except the metal lid for the crusader metal mug. Where did you get that from as I am using the BCB plastic version ?
Thanks for watching Mark. The Crusader lid is made by a company called Heavy Cover, sadly they stopped making them a long time ago, as a result, they are very rare to find. You might be better looking on eBay. There’s a chap on there that makes custom crusader lids, for about £10 that are very good quality, but made of aluminium, and not stainless. I’ve got one of those as well. A lot better than the plastic BCB lid, which is pretty much useless 😁 All the best mate, Jay
Enjoyed your vid. I agree w/dwaynestewart411, it's heavier and more durable, It will there and show up when you need it. You should consider doing vids from different countries surplus IMHO. I use my old kit to this day and its never failed me, I am 62 years old.
Thank you for watching and your comment Alan. Yes you really can’t beat the military kit can you. I do plan on doing a video soon using military kit from different countries 😎 All the best, Jay
The army knife must have stopped being issued about 83/84. I say that as some of my mates joined 83 and got issued the knife, i joined 85 and never got one, unless certain units still got it. Good video though bud.
They were still being issued to tradesmen in the royal signals in 95 when i joined, but never seen any a couple of years when i transferred to infantry
It’s made by a company called Heavy Cover, it’s a great bit of kit but costs more than the cup itself 😁 Sadly they stopped making them years ago, so they are very rare nowadays. There’s a guy on eBay that makes custom crusader lids, which are really good, but there made of aluminium, unlike the Heavy cover lid, which is stainless steel. Hope this helps, Jay
@@GoonieBushcraft thanks that's I've been looking forever that really narrows it down I'm off to hunt down a lid I guess by if you get the chance take a look at the us mss bivy I've been on dartmoor for a full week now and I've only used the bivvy and the cold weather bag that clips into it with a pad underneath me and I've got to admit I've been dryer using it due to the zip making entry's quicker also if your any good at stitching have you thought about taking a old pair of trousers that are torn and cutting off the leg and turning it into a pillow by stuffing it with a foam noodle cut down or a old sofa cushion it's very lightweight and can be compressed yo a very small amount
I’d love to do that, but I’ve only got a few items from the WW2 era. Although I do have a 1944 dated US mess tin 😎 Thank you for watching, all the best, Jay
I’m some sort of weird sandwich! I think anyway lol. I’ve never had any rations British Army Cadets/Regular Force (68-82 Compo of 1 type or another), Canadian Militia (TA)/RegForce (1983-84, 1989-2009 IMP’s), USA (MRE mostly surplus store in Canada), French (odd one here and there ) + USA (1993 CAMBODIA) that I didn’t like.
@@Wardog-rf1tx lol…..I think it was just the bacon burger I loathed…..a very curious thing; some blokes loved it! I ate a boxed French ration in 1976 issued to us on exercise in France…..10 Gitanes, a miniature of brandy, very good tinned fish and tinned meat with a packet of plain biscuits…….I wish I had saved it…🤣
Yeah I totally agree buddy! Those right angled torches where awesome back in the day… but now, there’s so many options that just blow them out the water! 😎 Thank you for watching mate, all the best, Jay

Top tip from an ex Royal Engineer, after making your brew, keep the used tea bag to clean the Hexamine residue off the mess tins, works a treat.

🤣🤣 Cheers buddy! Was waiting for someone to finally point that out 😁
Thanks for watching mate. All the best, Jay
I'm looking for a motorcycle camping kit based on military gear. Could you recommend anything specific that I would benefit from?
I like anything military surplus.
the lack of bugs is highly concerning.
Good stuff mate! Any winter camps planned? ATB JD
Cheers buddy 😎 Hoping to get out in January with Ray for a nice winter camp. ATB Jay
Carry all that plus full webbing and ammunition rifle etc. Then go for a nice wee walk lol
There’s no chance I’d be fit enough to do that 😁 Nothing but respect for the lads that serve in the military and do it though! 😎
Thanks for watching buddy, hope you enjoyed it! All the best, Jay
Great video , many thanks.
Thanks for watching Brad, it’s really appreciated buddy 😎
Merry Christmas, Jay
Awesome video mate, brings back memories from my time in the REME, love using my old issued kit for wildcamping and bysh craft, new subscriber here, im doing a similar video soon on my channel but not solely surplus kit, ta Stu.
Cheers Stu! Thank you for watching buddy, glad you enjoyed it!
You can’t beat the surplus kit! I love it 😎
And thank you for subscribing too mate! Very much appreciated! 😎
All the best, Jay
Noice one boys 🙌🏼
Cheers Paul 😎👊🏻 ATB Jay
New subscriber 👍
Thank you buddy 😎👍🏻
Where did u get the lid for the Bcb mug? (I can only find the plastic ones). cheers.
The Crusader mug lid is made by a company called Heavy Cover, although they stopped making them a long time ago, so they are now very rare, and sell for loads more than the actual cup 😁
The plastic BCB lid is completely useless.
A lot better than the plastic BCB lid, which is pretty much useless 😁
All the best mate, Jay
@@GoonieBushcraft Thanks for the reply Jay. A Merry Christmas to you and yours.
@@markbooth1117 Merry Christmas to you and your family too buddy 😎
excellent content really enjoyed that, but struggled to hear you properly maybe use an external mike for future vids thanks
Cheers buddy, thank you for watching. Yeah the sound is a bit low on this one. Will fix that on future vids. All the best, Jay
One failure…..I hope you had to Brillo pad your mess tins after use before the next meal……😂
Haha 🤣🤣
Brilliant done
Thank you buddy 😎
Enjoyed your vid. I agree w/dwaynestewart411, it's heavier and more durable, It will there and show up when you need it. You should consider doing vids from different countries surplus IMHO.
I use my old kit to this day and its never failed me, I am 62 years old.
Thank you for watching and your comment Alan. Yes you really can’t beat the military kit can you.
I do plan on doing a video soon using military kit from different countries 😎
All the best, Jay
The army knife must have stopped being issued about 83/84. I say that as some of my mates joined 83 and got issued the knife, i joined 85 and never got one, unless certain units still got it. Good video though bud.
Cheers Bob, thanks for watching buddy and the info on the knife! Appreciated buddy 😎👍🏻 All the best, Jay
They were still being issued to tradesmen in the royal signals in 95 when i joined, but never seen any a couple of years when i transferred to infantry
@OUTDOORALLY maybe we not to be trusted with the knife..😊
Where abouts did you get the metal lid for the crusader cup I can't find one for the life of me
It’s made by a company called Heavy Cover, it’s a great bit of kit but costs more than the cup itself 😁
Sadly they stopped making them years ago, so they are very rare nowadays.
Great video I'd luv that British Army u guys ex army?? Admire them
Just subbed as your videos are great
Thank you very much 😎
Awesome video new sub here
Cheers buddy, glad you enjoyed it, and thank you very much for the sub! 😎
All the best, Jay
Just so you know you can get a British army surplus inflatable Air mat
Cheers mate, yes I know you can. Was going for a more old skool effect with the roll mat 😁
Thanks for watching, Jay
@GoonieBushcraft no problem...thanks for replying
You should wear the clothes too
How about military gear from say WW1 or WW2.
I’d love to do that, but I’ve only got a few items from the WW2 era. Although I do have a 1944 dated US mess tin 😎
Thank you for watching, all the best, Jay
Клещи в вашем лесу есть??🤔
No, never seen any, We’ve been really lucky. Only ever had 1 tick get me, many years ago
@@GoonieBushcraft Счастливчик!!В нашем лесу...5 - 10 клещей на 1 кв.метр...Не сесть...не лечь!!!😬
The rations when i joined in 74 were a bloody disgrace…..soldiers are so lucky today…..and they deserve it.
I ate a boxed French ration in 1976 issued to us on exercise in France…..10 Gitanes, a miniature of brandy, very good tinned fish and tinned meat with a packet of plain biscuits…….I wish I had saved it…🤣
@@mikewingert-savagelyerudite the French ones I got in Cambodia were missing the alcohol, SNCO stole them before issuing them to the troops.
@@Wardog-rf1tx ohhhhh….interesting
Can't beat a roll mat and the bouncing bomb.
Got to ditch the right angle torch. They are hideous.
Yeah I totally agree buddy! Those right angled torches where awesome back in the day… but now, there’s so many options that just blow them out the water! 😎
Thank you for watching mate, all the best, Jay
