Replacing the RAM & SSDs in the Area-51M
Review coming soon - Наука
Thanks for a short, easy to explain video.
nice thanks you, the first disassembly video easily to understand compared to other
Buen video. Consulta ¿Cuantas slots para m2 dispone? ¿Es la R1 o R2?

Nice video, looking forward to the review!
What gaming laptop do a better keeping a 9900k CPU cool the msi gt75, Asus g703, or evoc ? Honestly I'm thinking going for a mid tower water cooling system vs. Having thermal ISSUES with a giant laptop.
Either Alienware Area-51m or Clevo aka “EVOC” P870TM-R should provide you good thermals if you buy from HIDEvolution with delid service. With a -100mV undervolt my 9900K can run full speed with low to mid 70s in temp, this is without delid and repaste.
@@cs.studios ok cool, I'm currently picking a laptop from hidevolution, I just dont know which one, aw 51m is very nice. I cant make up my mind.
I’ve owned both. I prefer the looks, size and options of Area-51m better. For example if we can’t upgrade next generation GPUs at least AW has graphics amplifier. Although you could get a TB3 enclosure for the Clevo now. Also keyboard is much better on Area-51m. I also like the integrated 2 power supply inputs of the Area-51m vs carrying the converter adapter for Clevo. Either choice is fine though, Clevo can overclock CPU more, AW GPU more.
Hey CS, Looking to buy an aftermarket copper heatsink rather than an aluminum one. What thickness was the Dell supplied one? And would that work in both slots as there seems to be less room in the secondary slot. Any help appreciated. :)
This one will fit both slots and performs very well: amzn.to/38E5fxr
What advice do you have for when one of the captive screws just keeps turning, but the section of the base cover panel it fastens won't come loose like the others?
Try gently pulling the panel up while unscrewing
can I change the ram to g skill ripjaw sodimm( same as you), only you changed to 2666 ram, does it support 3200 or 4000?(there is these speeds with the ripjaws)
Yes you can use 2666mhz. The one I linked in the description is actually 2666mhz. Keep in mind for now it will run at 2400Mhz speeds until a BIOS update fixes this. 3200-4000 is a waste as it is expensive and won't run at those speeds.
Hey brother, great video. I have a question since you are pretty knowledgeable on this. I bought my AW with a 256gb SSD. Is there a second slot to add another SSD or do I need to remove the original 256gb SSD? I have the same AW as you. Thank you and great video.
Yes there will be a second M.2 slot for another NVMe SSD and if you don't have the hard drive then there's also a 2.5" SATA bay as well
Hello! In this video you mention 4 RAM slots but I only see 2 and there's 2 listed on the web specs. Are there actually 4?
There’s four, they are stacked, two on each side. This is for Area-51m of course.
@@cs.studios how much ram can you have on the motherboard more than 64GB
So is it just plug and play or did you have to format the hard drive & ram before installing?
RAM is plug n play. If you are adding a 2nd SSD it just needs formatting. If you are replacing system drive it needs reinstall of windows
Do you gonna apply liquid metal conductonaut as Hidevolution does ?
No I’m waiting for a new product that’s coming out this year.
I’m getting ready to do this upgrade and I was wondering, what steps needed to be taken before I drop the m.2 ssd and remove the hdd in regards to the OS? Do I need to have a copy of Microsoft handy for when I boot up and just use my license key?
Yes, you’ll want a usb drive with windows. I believe you can also use macrium reflect to make an image of the current system and restore it into the SSD
CS Studios can I have both M.2 and factory Drive? Am looking at there hybrid drive, if not I’ll get the cheapest option
@@socan7182 You can have 2 M.2 drives and 1 2.5" HDD. So if you get the hybrid 1TB HDD you can add in two M.2 later.
Did you bother to clone your HDD to the SSD or did you just reinstall Windows? I ordered mine with the HDD was thinking about switching to either an NVMe or 2.5” SSD.
I just reinstalled. I’m not a fan of cloning nor having a non clean windows install. Although the stock install wasn’t bad.
Thank you for the help! I really need further help! What parts do you need to install a second SSD? i see theres a slot 2 but it's wide open for me like yours. I have a half sized 256 gb that I want to put there, but not sure what needs to go there besides a heat sink. Help would be appreciated!
You only need the screw to install. I installed my SSD in slot 2 without a heatsink.
@@cs.studios Okay, perfect, thank you! Unfortunately I've run into the issue of my SSD (samsung plus) not responding well with my laptop. It refuses to start and keeps running diagnostics in a loop. I can only go into BIOS mode, even though the PC is recognizing the drives. I don't expect you to solve this issue, but if you've ever heard of it or encountered it yourself, please let me know! Nothing online has worked.
Have you tried using a different drive? Could be possible drive got corrupted. You can try and see if you can reinstall windows too. Samsung offers 3 to 5 year warranties on their SSD. I have 970 Evo Plus working fine and 850 Evo in mine.
@@cs.studios No, it was a brand new Evo Plus. I realized I had to take the original drive out in order for the computer to boot from the new drive. I was lucky to find that response somewhere else online. The original drive just needed to be taken out momentarily.
@@krazyxki Thanks for the update that's very interesting because I just installed a new SSD in a m15 R2 with the original still there. It may be based on manufacturer (Samsung) or Area-51m specific issue.
Hello, great video! I'm a bit late to the party here, just wondering if you ever added the heat sink to the 1TB SSD?
I only have a heatsink on the 970 Evo NVMe SSD. My second SSD does not have a heatsink. NVMe drives should have one, SATA based ones seem to be fine.
@@cs.studios Awesome thanks! I tried getting a heatsink from Dell but apparently they are out of stock at the moment. Would you suggest waiting to install the 970 Evo until I can get the heatsink?
You can run it without heatsink. If they’re out of stock I listed some aftermarket parts that fit fine. I forgot who’s comment I replied to with links
Is the heat sink necessary I remove the 1tb hard drive and install a Samsung pro 860 SSD drive?
Which heatsink? In the video all you remove is the bottom panel. Then you can remove M.2 SSD or HDD right away
Will a Samsung SSD 2TB fit/work the Dell Hybrid connectors ? I've read the Dell cable are not compatible.
Are you referring to the Samsung 860 Evo SATA or 970 EVO Plus M.2 SSDs? Both of those fit.
@@cs.studios Yes, I meant the SATA Hybrid connector; I read it won't function with aftermarket SATA 2.5" SSD
I'm not sure where you heard that but the 2.5" SATA port works fine with 2TB SSDs and the M.2 slot also is working fine with 2TB SSDs.
my Area51 laptop came with 1T HDD and 250G ssd i wanna chang my ssd to a 1T or higher and my ram from 16 to 32 after doing this is there anything else im suppose to do or is this setup fine? im new to upgrading parts on my PC i have the i7 9700 CPU which i might change later on
Upgrading RAM and SSD is easy. Just follow the video and you’ll be fine. There are 2x M.2 NVMe SSD ports and 1 2.5” HDD port so you should open it up and see what port is being used first.
@@cs.studios awesome ty
If I remove the default ssd , hard drive and replace with some upgraded ssd, I need to buy windows and install it again right? sorry I am newbie, please help me
No, you can use the dell usb recovery software to make a windows installation USB ad install using that. Windows is tied to your laptop. No need to buy again
What kind of ram did you install and which ram was already stocked ?
Factory RAM: 8GB(2x4GB) Kingston 2666Mhz running at 2400Mhz (Dell limit)
New RAM: G.SKILL 32GB (2x16GB) 2133 RIPJAWS (I already had this kit from a previous build)
wondering why you removed the 1tb drive? i know you said it was slow but you could still use it as basic storage
The HDD makes noise and causes the palm rest to warm up. I ended up putting the HDD in a different laptop. My Area 51m has all SSDs for quiet and cool operation under normal conditions.
Makes sense, mine doesn’t run hot at all but I need to upgrade the m.2 drive, I also got one of those mighty skins
@@cs.studios
I'm thinking of changing my mechanical HDD to an SSD. Which SSD do you recommend? Thanks
Is the memory clock on this machine still locked at 2400mhz? They haven't officially made any response about this issue yet...
Yup, what’s worse is, they have an internal BIOS that supports 3200Mhz
Hey, there! Fellow A51M owner here, I am looking to replace my current ssd with another(ssd seems to be failing, errors on ePSA test, frequent crashing while gaming and what not). I have a quick question about the heatsink. Can i replace the ssd and reuse the heatsink that is already on the original ssd ? or do I have to get a new one ?
Yes you can reuse the original heatsink
@@cs.studios thanks a lot dude ! Cheers !
Can you add harddrive to the area 51m?
Cause that option isn't on Dell website.
Yes it accepts one 2.5” SATA drive
Is there a reason you didn't use the old ram in the extra 2 slots?
I didn’t want to mismatch the ram speed and capacity
@@cs.studios thanks for the response, i wondered if that mattered. i never heard of 48 gigs of ram lol
So is that mean, I just need to buy the basic spec of the 2080 version, then I upgrade with better ssd ram and WiFi card myself, will that be more cost effective? Can you do a video how to reinstall window if we upgrade the ssd? Many thx
I upgrade RAM and SSD myself because it’s cheaper. Sorry I already reinstalled windows, you just need to download the dell usb recovery app and it’ll guide you on making a USB.
I ordered mine with 500 GB SSD and 1 tb hard drive option.. When I get it can I just stick another m. 2 stick in it? Does it matter what slot it goes in..? Get back to me. Thank you. What brand should I go for? Samsung once seem good I got it on my rig but you can get crucial and wd blue much cheaper are they worth it or stick with the best?
Yes second stick can go in either slot. I prefer Samsung for important files such as C drive but for a gaming drive or scratch disk either brand is fine
Oh i forgot to ask, any problems with your samsung ssd? Thanks for your previous reply.
Nope it’s running great. I’m actually thinking of getting another one for RAID0.
@@cs.studios glad to hear as i installed the same. I'd read one concerning post online but seems to be the only one. Enjoy
Area 51m owner here... I have a 970 Evo plus but when I plugged it in to my machine it was recognized on desktop. I could not see it in the my computer area. How did you get it to work?
Did you format the drive? Go to control panel and type in partition drives and format the drive.
@@cs.studios I'll give that a shot! One last question, my 51m laptop has two slots, must both slots be occupied by the same brand name ssd?
Any particular ssd heatsink you recommend
From the spec, my A51M comes with 16GB RAM running at 2400MHz. So I bought Kingston Technology HyperX Impact 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 2400MHz DDR4 CL14 260-Pin SODIMM Laptop HX424S14IBK2/32 but the computer couldn't boot after installing the RAM. What would you suggest? Should I buy a RAM @2666MHz? Thanks
It should work fine. Try one stick at a time.
@@cs.studios you mean the 2666MHz RAM should work if I go for it? And by 1 stick at a time, you mean I install one stick, boot to windows, and shut down. Then do the same for the second stick?
No i mean the one you buy should also work. So yes try that one stick at a time with your new ram
@@cs.studios Thank you. Yes, the new RAMs work that way!
Is that like mini laptop ram? Or could I take my ram out of my PC and put it in there somehow.
Desktop RAM is larger and will not fit. Laptops use SO-DIMM memory.
Nice video, just wonder if I disassemble the laptop, would I lose the warranty?
No, you are able to open the laptop and keep warranty.
@@cs.studios Even if i'd like to repaste?
Good video, I can keep the factory ram and just add more?(new to the pc game)
Yes there's four slots so 2 will be populated if you chose 16 or 32gb. If you chose 64gb, all four slots will be filled. 128gb is supported (32gb x4) unofficially.
CS Studios that's good to know, thanks
@@cs.studios so just pop an extra one in the slot? it's literally that easy?
@@joshuaa2780 Yes, you can also order the SSD heatsink to help temps a bit as well.
@@cs.studios Beautiful, watched your video and immediately order the ripjaws and the ssd. Less than 48 hrs later I have 48gb of ram and an additional 1tb ssd, just got off the phone ordering the heatsink as well :) I do want to mention rather than replacing the ssd I just added the Samsung to the 2nd slot. I've read some places about people having problems with it not being recognized after install. This happened to me, but it just needs initialized from disk management, it won't read it automatically. Thanks again, great vid!
So if you wish to upgrade your RAM to 64GB (maximum for A51m), you could add more 32GB (16GBx2)?
Area-51m can technically do 128GB (4x32GB) but isn't officially supported. So yes 16GBx2 will allow you to upgrade to 64GB later.
Just wondering, the laptop have a total for 4 slot of RAM? or just 2 slot?
@@nelsonchinys Area-51m has 4 total RAM slots
Hi, bro! Nice video as always! I just have one question. Is the ram still locked on 2400 Mhz? I bought 2 3200 Mhz ram, but I didn't see any XMP option on BIOS. If so, do you know any way to unlock to higher Mhz? Thank you!
It’s still locked. Only way is to flash your RAM to the exact specs as the AW factory RAM
@@cs.studios thank you for your replay! I am new. Can I use XMP to do that? Thanks!
No you need typhoon burner
Why can't I run the m.2 nvme 4tb on this machine? It's crazy I can see it on bios, task manager performance and I see it on disk management but I can't run the it...
You can’t boot from from it or you can’t install stuff on it? Try formatting it in disk management
@@cs.studios thanks for the reply 👍🏻 it seems I was having an issue cloning the m.2 with sabrents acronios I did try re formating it and I used acronios version 7 and it worked better 😀
Im getting an Alienware Area 51m with a 9700k RTX 2070 and 1TB Hybrid Drive... If I add a 500gb ssd, how would I get my laptop to boot from the ssd instead of the Hybrid Drive ?
Yes there’s 2 M.2 slots in addition to the 2.5” used by the hybrid drive
there are 4 memory stick slots there, why not just add another two? why do you pull out the original one out? if not, you will have more memory?
New memory is 2133 old is 2666. I didn’t want to mix speed/latency
What kind of ram you got? model/part#
Thanks

@@cs.studios thanks so much have a great rest of your day
I got my computer with a 256 GB SSD harddrive, could I add another harddrive or do something to get more memory? im not sure what to do
The laptop supports 2 M.2 style SSDs and 1 2.5” SATA SSD/HDD so if it’s a 256GB SSD it’s most likely the M.2 style so you can add 1 M.2 and 1 SATA style drive
@@cs.studios I can do that without taking away the 256gb ssd?
Yup if you have the Area-51m like me then yes
@@cs.studios what do you recommend I add for gaming because I am not sure. Maybe a 1TB HHD added?

New RAM: 32GB (2x16) G.SKILL 2133Mhz
I noticed that you didn't add the new ssd, just the cover.
Good eye. I actually had added the new ssd before the video. I did add another ssd to the 2nd slot after the video
Hi I’m guessing this will officially support 2x 1TB SSD and an additional 1TB HDD ? Please confirm? As my laptop has only 1TB SSD and I would like to know the max before I go ahead and dismantle it.❤❤❤❤❤❤
You can put 8TB x2 NVMe SSD + 8TB SATA SSD or 2TB SATA HDD
@@cs.studios any M2 8TB saying 2280
Is there anyway to add an additional SSD?
Yes. Laptop supports 2x NVMe M.2 drives and one 2.5” SATA drive
Is this with 2060? Does it has side ventilation?
This is i9-9900K & RTX 2080. It has side ventilation.
After waiting a month on dell kept delaying my order I cancel my order today.. Ordered from another reseller should be in tomorrow.. Spec I got 2 x 8 GB RAM.. I ordered another 2 x 8gb ram.. So all 4 alot will be occupied total of 32gb is this OK?
Also one question when I open the cover to add more ram.. Do I need to disconnect the battery cable? And hold power button for 5 second? To discharge all electricity? Let me know please? Thank you
Filling all four slots is fine. Just make sure the speed is the same. Removing the battery and pressing the power button is a good measure to make sure there’s no static electricity. Be sure to discharge yourself as well by touching something metal around the area before working on the laptop.
@@cs.studios I bought 2400 MHz.. I think thats the speed they come with..
They come with 2666 but the BIOS is limited to 2400 so it’ll all run fine at 2400
@@cs.studios so 2400 MHz should be fine?
Yeah it’ll be fine
which one is better between 970 EvoPlus and 970 Pro?
I would choose 970 Evo Plus since it’s faster and cheaper than 970 Pro.
