  • Dig into the phenomenon of face pareidolia, which is the tendency of our brains to see faces in everyday objects.
    --
Imagine opening a bag of chips, only to find Santa Claus looking back at you. Or turning a corner to see a building smiling at you. Humans see faces in all kinds of mundane objects, but these faces aren’t real- they're illusions due to a phenomenon known as face pareidolia. So why exactly does this happen, and how far does this distortion go? Susan G. Wardle explores why we see illusory faces.
Lesson by Susan G. Wardle, directed by Oksana Kurmaz.

Although this seems to be common for most people, and maybe even other primates, I seem to have been very sensitive to this phenomenon from a very young age. My mum tells me how as a child, I would sometimes describe to her faces in objects that she struggled to see. To this day, some of my choices are influenced by facial pareidolia, for example, when I got my first car, I made sure I chose a happy car over an angry one. 🤣🤣🤣

I actually attended a talk by the researcher who first did this study! It was fascinating. The prior belief was that the womb was totally dark and needed to be so for the foetus to develop correctly. It took a whole bunch of simulations and tests for the ethics board to even agree to the study in the first place.
And the infants truly did respond to faces. The response was different when the three dots were oriented "upside down" to the foetus's perception.

I've been seeing faces in stuff my whole life and I've been told "I have a mental problem because normal people don't see them" then I found out about pareidolia when I was younger and it pissed me off.... Everyone saw them too but they didn't want to admit it in fear of being called crazy or being made fun of, they also didn't understand what pareidolia was so that didn't help. 😤

First time hearing about this. Though I've honestly never noticed faces in everyday objects. But this video has sort of influenced me, I'm now subconsciously looking for faces, it's like that thing people do where they say "don't think of a green elephant" and then that's what pops into your mind.

WTF! Pareidolia is completely normal and everyone experienced it many times in their lives, there is absolutely no reason to lie about something so normal.

All of these objects were taken from the most upvoted posts on the pareidolia subreddit.
I recognised all of them immediately. Go take a look if you don't believe me.

Thanks to research in machine learning, we now know that pareidolia is a phenomenon that emerges in all visual neural networks that work on hebbian learning.
Examples include image recognition AIs and the human brain.

There's a saying. The brain is too complicated for it to understand itself, but if it were any simpler it would not have the capability to see how it works from the getgo.

I have not been able to do this comment for a long time but today I am saying it, I am talking about this problem with a lot of hope. I don't know how to talk about my problem. but what I know and understand by googling is that my problem is "TRICHOPHILIA". If you make a video or tell me about it, it will be very beneficial and helpful to me. I have been suffering from this problem for many days. Please help me doctor. Is it any disorder?

    What about this,
I am Indian living in India, so English is my Second Language, I did my English Honours, I have some Superpower 😂 Because, If someone Who is teaching or if I am reading a new book and Some new word's (According to me) which I am encountering them first time, I get the Right meaning of them and with different sentences each time.
And This is not only with English, this happens with me in Japanese (Anime, Movie's)
    In Tamil ( some words)
In Bengali (whole language I understand if someone Speaking) Though I never studied it.
