Although pooping every day is not necessary, it is a good indication of how well you are doing gut wise. The human intestinal track will normally take 36 hours to process food, but eating the recommended amount of fiber, drinking enough water, avoiding extra doughy foods such as pizza dough, white bread and cheese etc. will help. Going when the urge happens is important because waiting will allow the colon to extract too much water, making the stool hard and difficult to pass. I was never able to be regular until retirement made it much easier.

She said 3 times a day to 3 times in a week is totally bullshit 😂 3 times a week is a case of severe constipation, like this person develops piles and fissures in future, don't know what these Americans smoke 😂
Another very important way to get fiber in is by eating lots of leafy greens! Like spinach, lettuce, kale, etc. Fruits and veggies too of course. :D You can make a smoothie with fruit like bananas and frozen berries with lots of leafy greens. All high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and living water! Lower fats if you deal with constipation.
In basic training in the Airforce, I went 3 weeks without dropping the browns off at the super bowl. Another kid went almost 4 weeks. The instructors told us that was normal for a high stress, high physical requirements for basic training.
Not pooping daily was one of my thyroid cancer symptoms. I had no idea. Please get your thyroid checked via blood test at the same time you get your cholesterol checked. Hopefully at your yearly doctor's visit. You might have to insist. This is something all doctors should do, but many don't. It's an easy cancer if you catch it early and is not only common but on the rise. If you have relatives with Thyroid issues it increases the risk. So if they find anything tell ALL your relatives to get theirs's checked too. There are other problems they can catch besides cancer too. These problems will fix easily with a tiny daily pill. Usually it will solve ALL KINDS of health problems you had but had not linked together as all the same problem.
Never been that regular in my life. My average is once or twice a week (and it's even a great improvement: when I was a little girl I could go entire weeks without visiting the bathroom for a longer time).
I don't know if you want to have more regular bowel movements... but if you do drink more, eat flaxseeds, eat oats in milk/yoghurt/overnight or smt like that. You can try eating dark bread, with higher fibre... papaya can help too... also tea...
For fiber, I just buy a big bag of frozen berries and throw those into whatever I drink for the day. Gives it a nice berry flavor and they're frozen, so you don't have to stress about eating it all before it goes bad.
Some of us are just prone to constipation. I think mental trauma can affect you physically. I've suffered since a child. Always been doing the high fibre thing. Bern married 3 times, without fail my spousrs will dine on meat and fries, and I'll do the veggies, fruit thing and their stomachs worked like clockwork every morning. Meantime I could eat for a week and nothing would happen. The only thing that works for me is soaked flaxseed, takes a day or 3.
I mentioned my gut pain for years and received many bits of education like this..... ...years later, that knowledge did nothing to prevent me from loosing my colon after a gastric bleed out and 18 units of blood.... ....I was originally scheduled for my first colonoscopy a week after the bleed occurred. Moral of the Story: If a Doctor says it's nothing to worry about, don't believe them
Ehhh, a lot of people have medical anxiety and thing there's something wrong when they're actually (physically) fine. A blanket statement to never believe a doctor is silly. Get second opinions, advocate for yourself, but don't just blindly decide to ignore an entire profession.
Not as an extreme of a case here, but second opinion and an expert opinion (ex: seeing a GI over just PCP) is always the move. I was complaining of pain for years and it took malnutrition, blood loss, and a trip to the ED to finally get on the road to diagnosis of IBD. If anyone had listened to me earlier I probably wouldn't have needed surgery
Might want to do research in to WFPB(whole food plant based) for Crohn's as it can pretty much cure you of IBS. I had it for several years and told I'd live with it for the rest of my life. Then, just over night after switching 'cold-turkey', I LITERALLY cried that I didn't have the runs anymore. A DAY!!!!!! NOT ONE DOCTOR TOLD ME ANYTHING ABOUT THIS!!!! NOT ONE!!!! It took a DAY!!!!!! Granted, I only had it for several years, but even if had REDUCED the amount I would have been ecstatic! It just blew me away how much it helped!! If you have problem with gas etc with the foods, make sure you look in to the plants that won't cause as much problem at first, as it can be a huge change to your body. I personally had tons of potatoes and bananas/oatmeal were a huge portion of what I ate and STILL eat now, because it's just that good. I no longer eat any animal products either.
Turns out my obsession with going every morning was causing my back problems. Waking up and 1st thing in the morning, downing coffee and straining muscles that arrn't supposed to be used that way was wreaking havoc on my core and irritating my back for the rest of the day.
Me: "It's 3 AM. What should I watch?" RUclips Algorithm: "Here's a pooping video." Me: "Well that wasn't where I was going... but okay!" Also RUclips Algorithm: "NOTED."
Taking a dump is your body's way of doing two things: 1. Getting rid of food you shouldn't have eaten to begin with. 2. Getting rid of too much food in your system, that you can't digest If you are going daily, eat less, and eat less crap. Your body knows what crap is, and it doesn't like it.
Excellent idea! I sometimes go more than a day without eating just because I've forgotten about it because I no longer recognize the feeling of hunger. Apparently, I'm not alone. I'm told there's also a difference between 'bodily' hunger and 'psychological' hunger.
Oh man I wish I only pooped 3 times a day. Thanks the Crohn’s it’s like 5 or more. If I have to go anywhere out of the house I don’t eat breakfast or lunch (the pandemic has been nice in that I can eat regular meals). I can get away with decaf coffee though. Also I have to avoid insoluable fibre (which is in most of what she listed). Depending on the source it could give me cramps and there is the risk of blockages with it that could necessitate surgery. Be thankful if you have a normal digestive system.
This is a great video, very illustrative and fun, but I don't think she addressed the core question of the title of the video: if you shouldn't worry about not pooping once a day, then when should you indeed worry??? 🤔🤔
When I was a child, I didn't even touch vegetables. My number 2 were once a week! But I didn't have any stomach problems. As I grew older, I ate a lot more fibre. So anything less than once daily was uncomfortable for me
Okay, but what about the fact that fiber tends to give me diarrhoea? Like, I eat those things that say “high in fiber” and it goes right through me! We talk all the time about people needing more fiber without talking about the fact that too much can cause you problems, such as, not only diarrhoea, but constipation…

Splut pea soup is also a great option. The peas have fiber and the high liquid content also helps things move. Dehydration can effect your stools because there isn't enough water content to keep the stools soft and comfortable.
It’s an elementary review and doesn’t mention important things like endotoxin (LPS) and not everyone has optimal stomach acid or bile excretion. she also doesn’t mention the types of fiber. fermentable fibers will increase endotoxin burden, and endotoxin gets into the bloodstream and has detrimental effects. insoluble fiber is best
I don't see people talking about broccoli. If you're not a fruit eater, like me, broccoli's really good in fiber, a little over 5 grams a cup. I'll also suggest drinking more water unless you already drink water on the go. It's either people don't have enough fiber in their diet, or that they don't drink enough water.. and sometimes inactivity. That'll cause issues too.
Love Dr Gunter! Ted could have used an artist who understood digestion better though. The graphic implies the pancreas & liver absorb nutrients. Those organs release products into the intestine to break fats & proteins down. Nothing should be going from the small intestine into the pancreas. That would be very bad
How is it possible. If you have 3 meals a day for a week, that means your body can hold 21 meals without popping. That's insane. If I don't do it everyday it doesn't feel so good. 😪

Yup, that's expected for that type of situation, but horrible for your body. Glad you made it through!
Why do you have to use such a stupid euphemism?
Not normal, they were feeding you a line of bs and you believed it.
I’m watching this while I’m eating...
Me too.. I’m eating spaghetti o’s 😂😂
Eating mango! 😂
I had a sandwich ten minutes ago. Lol.
Could be the best way to enjoy the meal
Same Im eating HAHAHAHAHAH
That's some revolutionary new anatomy there, the pancreas *absorbs* nutrients according to the graphic? lmao
as a middle schooler i am offended by the animation
Came here to say this 😂
As a pharmacist I have the conversation at least once a week on how you don't have to go every day!
It's still very bad not to at least once a day... There is a study showing the optimal is around 3 per day.
@@goku445 Wtf
Also where the heck is that study even from?
My average is once or twice a week (and it's even a great improvement: when I was a little girl I could go entire weeks without visiting the bathroom for a longer time).
more fiber and water.
What a perfect video to watch while I'm eating dinner!
Check your magnesium intake. I had the same problem, it got better when I startet to supplement magnesium in the evening.
Sounds like you prob don’t eat much at all
I mentioned my gut pain for years and received many bits of education like this.....
...years later, that knowledge did nothing to prevent me from loosing my colon after a gastric bleed out and 18 units of blood....
....I was originally scheduled for my first colonoscopy a week after the bleed occurred.
Moral of the Story:
If a Doctor says it's nothing to worry about, don't believe them
Ehhh, a lot of people have medical anxiety and thing there's something wrong when they're actually (physically) fine. A blanket statement to never believe a doctor is silly. Get second opinions, advocate for yourself, but don't just blindly decide to ignore an entire profession.
lol "dont believe a medical professional becaue of my bullshit anecdotal story" yep. makes sense
@@batkat0I'm going to suggest that docs ignoring symptoms because some people exaggerate is not a good excuse and is medical neglect
I never "pooped" regularly due to lactose intolerance and Crohn's disease. Thanks for bringing awareness to the issue of defecation though. X
My wife was diagnosed Crohn's today. Does that affect your bowel movement? Tried to read about it, but can't find anything about that part.
@@madsens90 Be there for your wife. She needs you now and this will hopefully be something you can get through together.
Eat more salads! Also the 1 banana, 1 apple, yogurt snack!!
@@madsens90 Except bloody stools and a bloated stomach🤢
I’d sit down and listen to her telling me about my body all day
I can fill the bowl five times by midday. Seems I’m not normal but it is wonderful. It’s the best thing about a vegan diet
How do you- how
Turns out my obsession with going every morning was causing my back problems.
Waking up and 1st thing in the morning, downing coffee and straining muscles that arrn't supposed to be used that way was wreaking havoc on my core and irritating my back for the rest of the day.
Me: "It's 3 AM. What should I watch?"
RUclips Algorithm: "Here's a pooping video."
Me: "Well that wasn't where I was going... but okay!"
Also RUclips Algorithm: "NOTED."
aw she’s a great narrator! loved listening to her
You haven’t to work at chipotle clearly, that hot salsa runs THRU me. It’s better than Soluble and insoluble fiber combined
🤣 I can't imagine thinking any restaurant salsa as hot.
@@jca66 it's not too bad, not going to satisfy a chilihead, I get some of that with the corn salsa. The corn salsa is tasty but no heat at all.
just eat more non processed foods and you'll be healthier
Yup, fresh food is the best food.
Taking a dump is your body's way of doing two things:
1. Getting rid of food you shouldn't have eaten to begin with.
2. Getting rid of too much food in your system, that you can't digest
If you are going daily, eat less, and eat less crap. Your body knows what crap is, and it doesn't like it.
Congratulations to the video editor who covered the final part of the animation with links to other the videos...
This is awesome. You guys should do one how does feeling of Hunger work.
Excellent idea! I sometimes go more than a day without eating just because I've forgotten about it because I no longer recognize the feeling of hunger. Apparently, I'm not alone. I'm told there's also a difference between 'bodily' hunger and 'psychological' hunger.
How come no one mentioned “ prune juice “ it helps me a lot
Frank Spencer would have mentioned it if he had have appeared on the video.
Very insightful, thank you.... Yeah, "normal" is different for everybody, so there is about 7 billion kinds of normal
This lady is a mood.
I pooped 2 times a week all my life so I was surprised to hear that people pooped everyday at all.
right, me too
Me: Switches on youtube to watch while eating lunch
RUclips:
Oh man I wish I only pooped 3 times a day. Thanks the Crohn’s it’s like 5 or more. If I have to go anywhere out of the house I don’t eat breakfast or lunch (the pandemic has been nice in that I can eat regular meals). I can get away with decaf coffee though. Also I have to avoid insoluable fibre (which is in most of what she listed). Depending on the source it could give me cramps and there is the risk of blockages with it that could necessitate surgery. Be thankful if you have a normal digestive system.
Best Ted video till date.
She's beautiful: physically, intellectually, and articulately.
This is a great video, very illustrative and fun, but I don't think she addressed the core question of the title of the video: if you shouldn't worry about not pooping once a day, then when should you indeed worry??? 🤔🤔
I could watch you all day without getting bored!

When I was a child, I didn't even touch vegetables. My number 2 were once a week! But I didn't have any stomach problems. As I grew older, I ate a lot more fibre. So anything less than once daily was uncomfortable for me
Wow, I almost forgot that Ted-Ed is a second channel and there's a primary channel of TED 😅
This Doctor is so good at explaining.
What a great video.
Thank you.

Okay, but what about the fact that fiber tends to give me diarrhoea? Like, I eat those things that say “high in fiber” and it goes right through me! We talk all the time about people needing more fiber without talking about the fact that too much can cause you problems, such as, not only diarrhoea, but constipation…
You might benefit from a probiotic. This gut is like a muscle that needs to get trained
Us opiate addicts from around the world thank you for putting our minds at ease.
I'm a constipation sufferer so I do sometimes worry when I'm not able to go for days
This was great, but it made me wonder why they got an Ob/Gyn to do this topic and not a Gastroenterologist?
Interesting observation, the thing is Dr. Gunter is very involved in the media. She tackles misconceptions about health, mostly obgyn, but not limited to.
@@Kevin-sy8uf Except that in the water intake "debunking" video, everything she says is the complete opposite of what my phrenologist tells me. And I'm inclined to believe someone that is specialized in the subject over someone who is not.

Best thing I ever did was getting into the habit of "going" in the morning before my shower. No more gas or having to hold it till I got home. My days are so much better now
How did you get on that schedule?
@@genxx2724 Just held off for as long as I could till I could sleep through the night. Also drinking lots of water or tea, about a litre in the morning helps, but it can be an individual thing
Splut pea soup is also a great option. The peas have fiber and the high liquid content also helps things move. Dehydration can effect your stools because there isn't enough water content to keep the stools soft and comfortable.
When I was a teen I ONLY pooped during my period. So yeah I pooped everyday for a week but only once a month. I never told anyone
And now are you ok?
Wtf 💀
@@JP-je3nw i removed dairy from my diet and it seemed to fix the problem. Thinking maybe I have a lactose problem

@@dansmith6990 try harder if u want to insult me. That one is lame.
Wait….people WORRY about POOPING ONCE A DAY?.well that’s something new I learnt today😮
😂 wonderful presentation! Funny, informative and concise. Really thank you, Madam 😉👍🏼
Every morning after a cup of lemon water and after evening snacks !!!!!!
It usually just depends on fiber, hydration, and how much you eat. You won't poo if you don't eat, and if you don't drink, aka constipation
Yes, and also physical activity.
It depends on how active your MMC and metabolism is, and how healthy you are.
Love Dr Gunter! Ted could have used an artist who understood digestion better though. The graphic implies the pancreas & liver absorb nutrients. Those organs release products into the intestine to break fats & proteins down. Nothing should be going from the small intestine into the pancreas. That would be very bad
Thank you. It's not often I get every single piece of information I need from a video in the first 12 seconds.
Anxiety of not pooping once a day exists.
Fiber is a big part of my being.
3 times a week is hella convenient, can someone drop their routine
Oh good u r definitely constipated I think
It’s not a typical good day .. but this poo poo animation and your narration just made the night shine ☃️☃️☃️
I regularly don't have to go to the bathroom for several days at a time, sometimes even up to a week. I feel completely fine. No big deal.
How is it possible. If you have 3 meals a day for a week, that means your body can hold 21 meals without popping. That's insane. If I don't do it everyday it doesn't feel so good. 😪
