Yeah I heard also stories about your ship destroying itself after trying to land. I haven't had that happen to me yet, my ships always landed reliably but imagine how heartbroken you'd get if you lose Billions of Credits in Exploration data because the Auto Pilot fucked up 💀
Can't even be pprevented because manual landing isn't possible without being inside your ship, and it's forced to leave if you get like 2km away from it.

You can boost ....if you're falling too fast, you can boost in perpendicular / opposite direction if you're fast enough. So you will gain some altitude. On high-G planets this can be your only saver on error.

Early in my exobiology treks, I didn't pay attention to the energy levels of my scarab. I (mistakenly) thought it'd just stop, only for the scarab to run out of juice a few meters from my ship. This is when I learned that a) scarabs go "boom!" when they run out of juice, and b) when you die in the scarab, you lose all of your scanned data.
Needless to say, I have not made that mistake again.

I have the opposite problem most of the time I thoroughly research everything I can before attempting a new venture in Elite. It has saved me a great deal of painful lessons. Ground combat is the one area I thought I could just wing it on and I died over and over again. I must have died at least 20 times before I decided maybe I should watch a few guides on how to do it well. LOL I am extremely grateful to every streamer who is willing to share their experience in this game I love! I have often considered starting a series of my own and always get bogged down in the details of production that I get no enjoyment out of at all. I love your approach to playing Elite and endeavor to watch every video you produce. Thanks for all of the hard work you put in to share with the rest of us!

On distant worlds 2 expedition I took a Mk2 Krait as I wanted to have the use of a fighter at the meet ups to hoon about in for giggles. Anyway we had past Explorers Anchorage by about 10k ly or so when late one night I decided to go canyon running believing I was in my fighter, I had consumed a quantity of Ales that night, but yep you guessed it I was actually still in my Krait and plowed into a mountain. I lost all my exploration data and respawned back at Explorer's Anchorage. I never did manage to catch up with everyone and got back to the bubble about 2 months after my friends and most of the other participants. Don't drink and fly Cmdrs 😂

When the radar is telling me I can land, but the ship won't actually land, or it suddenly changes to "unsuitable" when I'm 1 or 2 metres from the ground, that's when I use auto-landing. With some insults hurled at the flight computer regarding its ability to judge terrain suitability. Gone on a long trip without a fuel scoop; check. Not used system filters when plotting a route: check. Blew up the ship: check, check, check, check umm, maybe 4 or 5 more checks. No credits for insurance: check. Forgot the limpets: check. Decided to use self-destruct for a quick trip back to the starport (and lost all my survey data as a result); check!
Learning about these things is all part of the fun though.

I prepared for literally months before my first Thargoid Interceptor battle, tweaking my ship design, reading volumes of AX combat doctrine, and watching countless videos.
I barely survived the encounter, and I think i only took out one heart. Honestly, even after several dozen solo Interceptor kills, I'm still a mediocre AX pilot at best, and have never successfully soloed anything stronger than a Basilisk (and that was in atmosphere so it doesn't really count). But most importantly, I've had a FANTASTIC time doing it, and even more when doing it in a wing!

I've never ran out of fuel, flew without enough for a rebuy, and I've never intentionally engaged with Thargoids The rest I've done numerous times.
The worst case was on my way back from DSSA King's Pass with my Anaconda. That trip was to accomplish two goals: Test the ship, and collect enough data to fund my first carrier. Halfway back, I accidentally hit boost instead of gear while approaching a surface at 70 degrees nose down and 2K altitude. I didn't lose the ship, but it was close. Good thing I had repair limpets, and two AFMU's. It took a few rounds of repairing and then rebooting the ship to get everything to a comfortable level. I also changed the button I use for landing gear.

Hopped back into Elite after a long break and found I'd left off in the middle of the road to colonia. Took a couple hours of jumping and scanning, but eventually I reached a spot where the star density was so high and there was a nice nebula so i just had to set down on a planet and take a look outside. Unfortunately, I'd forgotten to check the gravity of the planet I landed on. And boosted on my way down. And forgot that drag isn't actually a think and going belly first into atmo does not actually slow you down very well. Sent me to the rebuy w 20 mil of exploration down the drain (I really should stop scanning and just enjoy the view) and an unfortunate rebuy screen. Currently on the Aspen Explorer III, other 2 (there might have been more before i started keeping track) have exploded in really stupid mistakes.

My biggest mistake was underestimating high G worlds and the handling difference between my brand new Anaconda and my previous Vulture so I came in a little hot thinking I could pull up at the last second like I usually did and pancaked into the ground. Thankfully I had enough to rebuy because veteran players drilled "Never fly without rebuy" into me but I was nearly broke after that so had to go back to my Vulture until I could afford the rebuy to safely fly my Conda again.

This reminds me when I was just starting, used one of the guides about how to get the Anaconda fast.
Bought it and first thing that happened to me was getting stuck in the mail slot, warnings starting to sound and by reflex did the goof old Alt + F4 and exit game... Turned out it saved me from station guns, when I got back to game was 10 kilometers away from the Station.

Stupid mistakes is something you have to do. It's one of the ways you learn how not to do them again. I have my fear shares of stupid mistakes. And some of them i have done more than once cos some specific once are far between. So then i go "whops". But crashing my ship or ran out of fuel i have done for many years, that was only when i started to play the game. For fuel its KGBFOAM. For gravity on planets it's usually "wow, that was a hard landing." The planet/moon gravity is usually something i look at when in glide if i don't forget.

Your honesty is commendable, after over a thousand hours of play I have never made any of the mentioned mistakes in Elite Dangerous. With that said I have made mistakes and lost a number of ships, when you have billions a re-buy is nothing.
I can think of a few bad mistakes though, I dropped out of super cruise by a neutron star in my Cobra Mark 3 days, the ship quickly cooked and went boom. I've also lost larger ships after too many drinks, I've assumed the auto pilot for docking the ship had taken over then quickly discovered it didn't 😆

Accepted an Odysee Settlement Massacre Mission yesterday. Was sent into a fucking Military Base racked with defense grids and rocket launchers. I still attempted to kill my targets regardless, and oh boy I've never seen my ship parked nearby evaporate that fast 💀
Goes without saying the rest of my pilot followed swiftly, these NPCs didn't fuck around for sure. Better check where a mission sends you unless you want to have nasty surprises.
Oh and I had the funny idea once when I was new to repair my Thrusters. Midair at 500m above the ground, and that I can tell you, I was never more awake on this day as my ship fell like a stone than on this particular day ☠
