    Great so see your setup. It saves us all a lot of time and money doing our own trial and error. Ever thought of adding a seasonal greenhouse extension off the back of your trailer? That might give you a ton of extra space for much of the year.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

      Thank you and I'm glad you found it useful! I have actually thought of a bunch of crazy ideas on how to turn the trailer into more growing space... One idea is adding vertical growing systems to the exterior sides to act as extra insulation and provide more growing space. I love the idea of adding a seasonal greenhouse! I'd have to find a way of doing it where it would be easy to move the trailers still so that I can use it at farmers markets and what-not... The issue is creating more grow space and keeping the trailer mobile. Thanks again for the support and ideas!

      We got ours online, but a good trick is to look online in resell markets like Facebook marketplace, Craigslist or other resell places. You can generally score some for super cheap, you just have to go pick it up. I believe we got some of ours directly from Amazon and Seville's website. You can also use the 18in deep racks which will usually save a few hundred in cost... the only downside is that trays will hang off the edge a little but we've seen no negative effects from that. Hope you've enjoyed the book James!! Drop us any questions you may have on our website and we are much quicker to answer those as we get several thousands comments each week on social media and it is getting tough to get back to them in a timely manner. Happy growing!! -CJ

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

      Great question! I should have a lighting test posted in a few days hopefully where you can see the growth of LEDs vs Fluorescent. Basically, we noticed very similar results between our low powered LED's and our T5 HO fluorescent lights... Since they Fluorescent use a lot more energy (and are way more expensive), we stick with our LED's... Here is a link to the lights we have used so far with great results. www.amazon.com/shop/onthegrowfarms?listId=300RR4HQRM5I9
      The 18 watt LED's are the ones we've used for months and had solid results with. Hope that helps!

    Quick question on the lights. CJ says you prefer 3 lights which gives about 6000 lumens per shelf. But then on the NFT setup he says you are using 2 lights/shelf at 6000 each (1 6000 lumen light per channel) for a total of 12,000 lumens per shelf. So just wondering if that was correct? That would mean for 4 trays, you've doubled your light on the NFT setup??? BTW. Which lights are those on the NFT setup? The link shows quite a number of different ones. Thanks again!!! My Radish is on Day 6 now. Growing like a "weed"!

      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад +1

      Currently, yes. We thought about having another fan on the other end of the shelf as well, but honestly those little fans do a great job... We also have one large fan that is in the very middle of the grow space to push the air towards the back (where I am standing) and then the little fans on the racks push the air back towards the front and up the sides. It creates a nice vortex of airflow that has worked well so far.

    2:45 I use Doggo Lux Meter for Android using light sensor on android phone, and only one T5 Lamp 6500k 18 watt 120cm , and the app only shows 1500 lux. Damn, either that lamp is really good or the lux meter I use is inaccurate. Haven't tried using 3 at the same time unless it works significantly higher when exposed to more light, I think it's safe to just multiply it by 3 if using 3 lamps. I'll buy real lux meter later on if I'm serious about this and this lamp fails to provide sufficient light. Still waiting for my stuffs to be delivered.

      Thank you so much for your support! We can absolutely make a video on that soon! The main thing is making sure you can sanitize your grow tools and shelves. We use liners on our shelves that we can spray sterilize. All the shelves/growing supplies are NSF certified safe for food-contact and we use trays that are food-safe plastic (PP-polypropylene). It really depends on your local regulations... Some places have very low-standards for food-safety and others are extremely thorough. Our local regulations were quite simple and didn't take much to get to selling. There are a lot of farmers who started out of various rooms in their homes! Excited to hear about your journey with Micros!

    Tks for the reply I deleted the comment actually before you got a chance to reply because I realised (after backtracking to watch it again) that I had initially confused the earlier setup (with the 20W leds) in that you were actually talking TOTAL lumens (as in 3 x 2000)... so my bad...
    I will include your reply here as it was really a good one and is now lost in the aether...
    "Great question! We have tested out lights quite a bit and we find that about 6,000 lumens is the sweet spot for us! We actually prefer more than this if we are looking to have the appearance of crops really pop. You can get by with 2,000 lumens, but if you continue upwards from there, you can increase harvest yields, get sturdier/healthier plants, increase appearance and so on. Check out some of our videos on lighting and we have a more updated video on our rack build too. Hope that helps!"
    As a follow up have you noticed improvements with the single 6K lumen set up in the custom set-up... logic dictates that there should be some if only because the trays are recieving the full benefit from positioning alone however real world testing trumps theory most almost every time...
    BTW love your chanel great info and very detailed help :)

      Not a lot really... maybe buckwheat, and wheatgrass but nothing grows as aggressively and as tall as peas do. It also depends on how you grow... I can stretch sunflowers to be as tall as peas but it is kinda pointless unless you want to have a ton of stem on them.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад +2

      Great questions and thank you for the support! You can likely get the shelves cheaper locally by looking at Lowes/HomeDepot if you have those nearby or any big retailer... You can save quite a bit of money that way! Basically look for a 24" by 48" rack and get it however tall you want. We are limited on height because of the ceilings in our grow space. You can absolutely get extra shelves! It takes a little digging to find a good source, but webrestaurantstore has some I think. The lights are good to go, but you will need an extension cord or something to plug them into, makes it easier for cable management. We will be making a video in about two weeks for a full walkthrough on how to build a shelf!
      If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask! I'll do my best to get back to you quickly!

      We will try and add that to our list of videos to make! They are quite simple to setup using the measurements and outline provided in this video! We will try and get a full set-up video in the works soon! Thanks for the support!

      My teen daughters put our two racks together in under an hour while I was at work. They’re really simple to assemble.

    Why don’t u run the fans on the timer?

      Great question! Airflow is important to be going 24/7. Stagnant air makes all the microgreens really prone to disease and mold.

      Do you have to water more often? I am worried about the soil drying out running fans all day. I have to find a solution as I did have a small mold issue on a "protein mix" that has garbanzo and other similar seeds in it. I think I overseeded. I am using 2010 trays with no holes. Misting from the top. My basement stays about 67 degrees with 60-70% humidity.

      Yup! It prevents microclimates on each shelf by moving the heat the lights put off. They put out 53 CFM each and do a great job for their purpose! I also have an 18” ceiling mounted fan.
