My experience with salt was that at first I absolutely needed tons of salt. Even now, more than 8 months into a carnivore diet bacon tastes bland to me, like it has no salt in it. My first two sets of blood work on carnivore showed very low sodium, but high potassium. My magnesium has never been a problem. For months I would wake in the middle of the night with leg cramps and take a few pinches of salt to make them subside. My sodium levels are finally normal and I rarely wake with any kind of muscle cramps now. I no longer need to consume 3-5 teaspoons of salt a day in addition to the salt on my food, but I still heavily salt my food to keep my sodium levels in the mid range of normal. The simple fact is that insulin is what tells the body to hold onto salt when you are eating carbs. When you eliminate the carbs it takes a while for the kidneys to figure out how much salt to hold onto. For some people it's months, for others it's years. If you need salt eat it, drink it, lick it, whatever you have to do. But you will also need lots of water. Anyone who tries to tell you to drink less water just doesn't know what they are talking about. God save us from the guesses of "experts!" Know yourself!
The older you get.. the more pronounced the "cramping" issue may become.. bummer right? While I went 98% carnivore about a year back.. I still got leg cramps. so I now suppliment with Mag and Potassium and I salt my meat.. and I drink LMNT everyday.. 90 to 110 ounces of water/fluid everyday. This resolved the issue. My daily activity level is relatively high/intense..so lot so sweating. You have to find your balance with this.
This is the best video I have seen on the subject. Im a surfer / swimmer and have been through a rough adjustment phase from carbing up to full fat. I swim every morning and I usually burn out after about 3 or 4 days of practice in a row. This isn't happening anymore. It took a few weeks to dial in how much fat to eat and when.

And having lots of butter for energy is essential to perform better than anyone using glucose from carbs. But if anyone did wants to be carnivore and use carbs, you can always just eat dairy for carbs and still be carnivore. It seems some people forget you can stay carnivore and have all the carbs you want from dairy. If that's really what you want. Carbs make people get more hunger cravings, it's an inferior energy source vs ketone. Butter is ideal on carnivore for having tons of energy😇. I admit I was scared of fat at first on carnivore. But now I eat tons of butter daily. I realized it's ideal for energy, just like meat is ideal for nutrition. They both give nutrition and energy. But fat is more for energy, and meat is more for nutrition. For ideal health you would essential just have animal fat and meat, water and maybe some salt/minerals daily. It is that simple😅. The other day I did a 31.5 mi. / 50.7 km mountain bike ride fasted. I rode for 3.5 hours and burned roughly 1800 calories. The day before I only ate one moderate meal for dinner. Pre ride ketones were 0.8 mmol/L, glucose was 106 mg/dl. Post ride ketones 1.3 mmol/L, glucose 83 mg/dl. 2.5 hrs later still fasted ketones were 4.1 mmol/L, glucose 98 mg/dl. I went carb free the last week of June and have been Ketovore since. I’m not a super athlete, just a guy that likes to ride bikes.
YUP.. all true.. you will find you feel pretty incredible when you go this route. I'm an avid road cyclist.. and I'll do 3 to 4 rides per week of 35 to 40 miles.. so..I can atest to how much better you feel when you're fueld by meat.
RAW milk before training and I go places. Then after one big ribeye with cow tail fat. That’s it, sometimes I will star the day with raw milk and eggs.

The electrolyte issue is odd. At the beginning I got cramps and electrolytes really helped. But a few months in the electrolytes started running through me so I stopped, but no cramps. Now I think bacon is too salty, don't salt meat before cooking, and occasionally even crave my steak without salt on it. Still no cramps. So something happened in the beginning with me that eventually corrected, at least it appears that way.
Simple adaptation that everyone goes through, first you lose 2 to 3 liters of water in first week or two due to glycogen not being there to hold it and a lot of electrolytes and salt go with it, hence the cramps, but once this loss is done, you need less and less salt and electrolytes as you get adapted.

Great video! Another reason people get cramps on carnivore is Vitamin D supplementation. I was taking 5000 to 10000 IUs a day because it's supposed to be uncontroversially good for you..... well it turns out that your body has to use a TON of Magnesium to process high doses of Vitamin D like that, which then causes cramps that everyone blames on the diet. If you're getting leg cramps on Carnivore do yourself a favor and stop taking Vitamin D for a few weeks, and like Dr Chaffee said, drink a bit more water, and see what happens.
Yeah I'm about three months into carnivore and I only had one cramp episode in the first month. I have a super physical job and work out most days off... I salt my meat and if I sweat allot, I'll have an electrolyte drink or just opt for an extra salty meal like a steak with a side of bacon

There are marginal gains in utilising ketones in professional sport and professional cyclist are already doing this, but in now way is it replacing carbohydrates which is still the primary fuel that drives performance hence profits for professional sport. Exogenous ketone supplementation pretty much ends the debate. Carb fueled athletes can take them and stack energy substrates. A fat adapted athlete cannot take glucose.
Slow oxidizer. Slow oxidizers have a lower Na/K (sodium to potassium) ratio and a higher Ca/Mg (calcium to magnesium) ratio, which affects their metabolism. A keto diet with a higher protein or fat content may slow down liver functions and oxidation rates further. Don't expect Chaffee or other carnies to give you a clue. All they know is up the fat.

At low intensity long time domain events (ultras), keto may actually be better, but now you are talking such an incredibly small percent of athletes. Im open to the possibility that long term studies in the future (which would be very difficult to design and would be very expensive) may one day show no difference. But i doubt it.

They had 4 days to adapt. That's nothing. Fat adaptation can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months. Look into prof Tim Noakes works, he had a similar but more detailed study where adaptation period was 6 weeks and keto was much more favorable there.

I do six egg yokes in two glasses if raw milk , myself.
So you use up all the carbs from the raw milk during training and you get back into ketosis later on?

Taking a 50k ui vitamin D supplement once a week, fixed it for me! No more cramps!

What about teas? Obviously they’re plants, but are there any negatives to drinking green tea for example?
It contains caffeine and other plant chemicals.
I don't use salt or supplement with electrolytes. when I do I have issues.

Carnivore dieter here, but feed the kids honey and fruit because they train for many hours a day.

One of RUclipss main body builders swears that carbs are needed but others say fat and protein are required for protein synthesis but carbs are not. Confusing.
Bodybuilders will carb load days before competitions. They also carb up during their months leading up in prep. They want their muscles to pop with super hydration "pulling the water and glycogen into the muscle belly".

Lol! There is insane money in professional sport and being at the top. There are marginal gains in utilising ketones in professional sport and professional cyclist are already doing this, but in now way is it replacing carbohydrates which is still the primary fuel that drives performance hence profits for professional sport. If ketogenic athletes perform better and could win the Tour De France then they would be doing this as it translates directly to more profit.
Exogenous ketone supplementation pretty much ends the debate. Carb fueled athletes can take them and stack energy substrates. A fat adapted athlete cannot take glucose.

Slow oxidizer. Slow oxidizers have a lower Na/K (sodium to potassium) ratio and a higher Ca/Mg (calcium to magnesium) ratio, which affects their metabolism. A keto diet with a higher protein or fat content may slow down liver functions and oxidation rates further. Don't expect Chaffee or other carnies to give you a clue. All they know is up the fat.

There is zero evidence to suggest a keto athlete is better than a carb fueled athlete, but a lot of evidence and observation to suggest the opposite. At low intensity long time domain events (ultras), keto may actually be better, but now you are talking such an incredibly small percent of athletes.
Im open to the possibility that long term studies in the future (which would be very difficult to design and would be very expensive) may one day show no difference. But i doubt it.

What was their definition of low carb? Often times these experiments are run with ridiculous amounts of carbs that are nowhere near what is necessary to generate ketones. Also, if one is not fat-adapted already, it's going to take more than 4 days to get there.
They had 4 days to adapt. That's nothing. Fat adaptation can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months. Look into prof Tim Noakes works, he had a similar but more detailed study where adaptation period was 6 weeks and keto was much more favorable there.

@PaulB_864 I'm fat adapted and haven't eaten carbs or sugar in 9 months. On a strict lion diet. For as long as I've been out of shape eating crap doing drugs and smoking I've been able to get into sprinting and quite literally able to run longer and harder then in my high school years as an athletic type. This is why I already know what a fat adapted athlete is capable of. Most carb addicted ppl don't have the mental strength to get through that keto flu phase. And this is why I said no one cares what you eat cause you'll still eat carbs and shit at the end of the day. Really it comes down to you need to be mentally prepared and want to give up carbs and sugar. If you're not at all ready there's really no need to be commenting on a topic they know nothing about cause they don't even have the will or strength to actually try it for themselves for a period of time. 30 days 60 days or 90 days.
