    SYNOPSIS
Many generations after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes,[4] ape civilizations have emerged from the oasis to which Caesar led his fellow apes, while humans have regressed into a feral, primitive state. When the ape king Proximus Caesar, armed with weapons forged from lost human technologies, perverts Caesar's teachings to enslave other clans, the chimpanzee hunter Noa embarks on a harrowing journey alongside a human woman named Mae to determine the future for apes and humans alike.[5][6]

I’m seeing this movie in an hour! Rewatching the Caesar trilogy once again this past week, it just reaffirmed my love for those films. They showcase the ability for big budget movies to both be exciting and incredibly rich in the themes being explored at the same time. I’m not expecting that level of caliber for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a worthy successor.

I really liked Rise, Dawn, and War but this one left me a little cold. It's pretty slow for long periods of time, overly long, and I wasn't a huge fan of how the focus was shifted back onto a human character. Over the course of the previous trilogy the emphasis transitioned from humans onto the apes. I wanted that to continue here.
I didn't think it was a bad film by any means but I'd rank it lower than the previous three films.

I think this films biggest flaw is not introducing its villain, the Proximus Caesar, earlier. Minor spoilers, but he only comes in around the third act, while his and Noa's relation is actually the most interesting dynamic in the movie. He could've maybe reached Koba's status as an awesome antagonist, but it squanders its potential.
But in total, I think it's a solid addition. If I had to rank the Caesar saga right now, it would be:
    4. Rise
    3. Kingdom
    2. War
    1. Dawn

    • @kingkiller5325

That would depend on where you are counting the Mission Impossible Franchise from.
The "New" MI movies, Ghost Protocol and onwards, have probably been the most consistent set of movies in a movie series. (Not counting trilogies like LotR Trilogy).
But if you count MI as a whole. The franchise saw a huge dip in quality with the 2nd and 3rd film.

The “What a Wonderful Day” scene was one of the deepest parts in the entire movie. Proximus using Caesar’s words which were originally meant for good and twisting them into something very bad. It also shows how religion can quickly become a cult if it is misinterpreted and people are misled.

Very good and insightful review! I will see the movie this weekend!
As we don't really know the future of these movies and if Wes Ball will be on board to direct the other 2 ( he want to do Legend of Zelda), i understand why people want to already compare it to Caesar trilogy by saying that it doesn't have the same weight. Honestly, i don't know if it will but one thing i know for sure is that Kingdom is like the Rise or the first of Noa's Arc (pun intended) so nobody can't really know the real impact when we will get to the end of this new trilogy (if there is one). Even Wes told that they have ideas to make it bigger, better and more thought provoking. So i will judge it as a stand alone movie and as a big introduction but i will wait to really judge where this new trilogy stand compare to the one before.

One thing I found interesting is how Caesar’s teaching could be also be spun into something different, but still positive. And we get to see the seed of that with Raka. Spoilers below…
When Raka dies his last words are “together strong”. When the Caesar quote is “Apes together strong”. So Noa and Mae could take that to mean that apes and humans working together are strong. Instead of the original intent of the quote. So I thought it was really cool that we got to see the moment that the quote may be changed forever. But in a positive way rather than a negative way. As opposed to what Proximus does.

I watched it earlier today, and was pleasantly surprised. Going into it, I was a little worried if it could still intrigue me the way the previous trilogy had. I am pleased to say I thoroughly enjoyed it and am excited about what is to come.
That being said, I felt that some elements felt like rehashes from previous installments, and I with the humans were a little more interesting in the movie.
I'll rate this one an 8.5 / 10. It was a good start to a new trilogy in what is my second favorite series of all time. I only hope that the franchise continues this streak.

On the budget it may also help that it has no “A list “ stars to pay. I wonder if it would jump from 160 million to lets say 250 million range if it had 2/3 “major” stars

I’d agree with it not having as much dramatic emotion as the last trilogy. However, I think there was a good amount. The fact that these apes are twisting who Caesar was and wondering if Caesar legacy meant nothing. Also, the end with the face off and not knowing if apes and humans will ever be able to live side by side.

I loved this movie and how they tie in the previous trilogy with the story of this one. The humor was lightly but perfectly sprinkled in and limited which I felt made it more effective. Gonna check it out another time or two in this theater run before buying the 4K.

one question: how can it be that the planet of the apes-movies had photorealistic animals since the first movie of 2011 that have faces with believable emotions, but The Lion King that came out 8 yeary later fails in putting emotions in the faces of the lions?

I was floored when I saw the gun behind Mae's back when she saw Noa again I was like "Really bitch? You were going to shoot Noa after all he had done for you? Despite that he doesn't trust you?" Up until the end of the movie he still didn't trust Mae but he hoped she would think that not all apes were bad that's probably why he gave her he necklace with Caesar's symbol on it he wanted her to know apes just wanted peace.

I had little to no to even low expectations for this, because the only impression I had on Wes Ball were those horrible Maze Runner movies. However, having seen the movie, I not only think he's redeemed himself, but I'm excited to see what he has to offer with The Legend of Zelda (if Sony doesn't screw him over). The characters were interesting, the visuals are perfect, the music was great, and the cinematography was just stunning. It's nowhere near the quality of Dawn and War, but I found it more interesting than Rise (at least for now). At the end of the day, I'm excited to see what future stories there are to tell in this new age of the franchise.
    What a wonderful movie!

I think it also has a lot to do with Matt Reeves just bieng a better and more experienced Director than Wes Ball.
Also KotPotA is written by Josh Friedman.
Not Rick Jaffa and Amanda silver. Who wrote the first 2 Planet of the Apes movies and Jurassic World.
They are simply better writers than Josh Friedman.

It's hard to judge this film. It's part of the same universe, but not part of the same trilogy. I can't say it's weaker then the past three because it's not a direct sequel, but the beginning of a new trilogy. As the first film, it's really good.

I didn’t really like I felt disappointed . The first three were great dawn especially. I think the direction of the film was messy I got lost in the story . I was confused on how the human civilization still had talking humans that were smart enough to connect to each other . I think the film lacked action aswell . Not enough fight scenes and although Noa was young he seemed very weak physically . I think this was a lead up to the inevitable fact that ape and human will always be at it . 7/10

I'm a big fan of the original franchise, ever since I first saw the original in a cinema in the summer of 1974. A few years earlier in 1968, my mother went into labor with me, in that same cinema whilst watching that original movie. The original movies were on the TV all the time during my child and teen years, and I always enjoyed seeing them.
I hated the Mark Wahlberg movie, I walked out on it. Wahlberg himself has made some unfavorable comments on it. I love the Cesar trilogy. It's absolutely brilliant. Especially Rise and Dawn.
However, I did not like this new movie at all. I didn't like the story, or the pacing, and I didn't like the main human character or the actress's playing the part. I found her dull. I had no care for her character whatsoever. I personally feel they dropped the ball with this installment.
