Hey Sean. Your movie ranking videos are great. Particularly, the rankings of director filmograpy. I'd be interested in seeing your ranking of Michael Mann's filmograpy as well as Ridley and Tony Scott.
Dawn was the movie that pretty much ignited my passion for movies, I was hesitant to see it because of how dark it seemed but wow, still to this day one of my favourite films of all time
I would put Dawn & War both at No.1 It's difficult to choose between those two for me whereas Rise in No.2 & Kingdom in No.3 Haven't watch any of the old films.
@@ALANtt It's one of the best trilogies ever, and the fact that Kingdom is pretty obviously the worst of them all (still super good bot not as good as the other 3), it already has way too much ground to make up for the next 2 installments, it's impossible at this point.
I really wanted to like Kingdom but I just can’t bring myself to rate it that highly. I feel like it doesn’t compare to any of the other 3 movies of the new trilogy. It always felt almost boring, and I feel like it didn’t do enough to make me that interested in the plot that was there. For me it goes: 1) Dawn: 9.5/10 2) War: 9/10 3) Rise: 8.5/10 4) Kingdom: 5/10
Been awhile since I have seen the original 4 sequels, but feom memory agree about the bottom 5 movies. I would, however, rank my top 5 at 1- Dawn, 2-Rise, 3-original 1968, 4- Kingdom, and 5- War. Great video! Will be checking out some of those books. Love your ranking videos!
Amazing video Sean! I’m watching the original 5 and remake right now but here is the ranking of all the films I have seen. #1 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Koba and Caesar’s battle is epic!) #2 War for the Planet of the Apes (Steve Zahn’s character made me laugh quite a lot!) #3 Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (Loved new characters and loved the villain!) #4 Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Amazing film but lacks of action in the first 2 thirds!)
I think the Cesar trilogy did something incredibly rare, where every film is better than the last. They're each incredible. The only problem is, War is so emotionally haunting, I can't watch it very often. That said, with what that film was going for, that's a compliment. No film in the series asks the question as to whether humanity is worth saving better than this one, and it's a question that's been there from the start.
the new trilogy i compare to the nolan batmans. it takes something that seemed silly or corny on paper, batman/planet of the apes and takes it super serious and gives a realistic depiction of how the story could actually work in the world we live in and you actually buy it. and just like nolans batmans the ranking is 2,1,3
Out of the most recent reboot, I think I am the only one who liked Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes the most. While it didn't have a monkey holding ak-47s while riding a horse (which was awesome, won't disagree with that) it had the best character development. Ceasar going from a naive immature kid to a broken ape and finishing as an independent leader was great to see. However what helped the most was the people. The thing that has been hurting the other films in this franchise is the blandness of the people. While dawn is amazing, not a single person leaves the theater saying wow that human was my favourite part. In rise, Will and Charles's story is fantastic, plausible, and the conclusion is gut wrenching. Truly a masterpiece
1.Dawn and Kingdom, equal 2.Rise 3.War I like the first one and the Tim Burton one alright. But the franchises reboot and the direction it is heading in is beautiful and I can’t wait to see it.
You know that behind the planet of the apes documentary that you mentioned from the 90s is also on movies anywhere as a 2 hour bonus feature on the 1968 movie. I just got done rewatching it for the second time. Great documentary.
I love both the original and the new series of Planet of the Apes. The classics (especially the first film but also the third and fourth films) I still have a big soft spot for, but these new films are just incredibly epic and emotional. I know some are disappointed that Kingdom is not in the same category as Dawn and War but in my opinion, it doesn't have to be. Kingdom is a very good to great movie similar to Rise.
This is my exact ranking love how consistently good the modern movies are. I remember watching rise of the planet of the apes and the amount of gasps and the pure silence of when Caesar spoke for the first time, you could hear a pin drop, one of the most memorable movie going experiences in my lifetime.
My personal ranking 10:beneath 9: conquest 8:2001 remake 7:battle 6:escape 5:rise- I absolutely love how this movie tells ceasers story I just have it at 5 because it’s the setup to all that we get later on and the next 4 movies are all amazing in their own right 4:original- still works, and is such a triumph in cinema and despite heavy themes they work. It’s just dated in certain aspects and the first 30 minutes take a bit to get going 3: kingdom- planet of the apes is back and just as good as ever, the only real issues I had with the film was how long it took to meet proximus ceaser and how little screen time we got. And Raka should not have died but I know why he had too in the story 2- war pretty flawless film that mixes so many different elements that most of the time don’t work together but finds a way to put it all together. Ceaser’s send off ended his trilogy perfectly 1-dawn- perfect planet of the apes film, Koba is such a compelling villian where the audience can hate him for what he does but can see where he’s coming from. And ceaser and his dynamic with the humans works so well in this movie so definitely my number 1
I have never understood everyone’s hate for beneath the planet of the apes. I think it’s the best of the originals. It’s plot is crazy entertainment here’s my ranking 1. Beneath 2. Original 3. Rise 4. War 5. Dawn 6. Kingdom 7. Remake 8. Conquest 9. Escape 10. Battle

9. Battle 8. Beneath 7. Burton film 6. Escape 5. Conquest 4. War 3. Dawn 2. Original 1. Rise I haven’t seen Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes yet but I’m really excited to watch it.
When you look at it, though, it seemed (especially in the 70s) that just about any hit movie had a chance of getting a TV spin-off. But for every “Odd Couple” or “MASH,” you had a “Delta House (Animal House sequel series),” “Shaft,” “The Bad News Bears,” “Logan’s Run” or “9 to 5.” The blu ray of Blazing Saddles even contains the failed pilot of a TV adaptation with Louis Gossett, Jr. as Sheriff Bart. Studios have never been afraid to beat a dead horse.
Dawn of the planet of the apes is my second favorite movie of all time! I love everything! The story, the characters, the visuals, the directing, everything. It’s so good!
Everyone always remembers that Rise of the POTA pulls a lot from Conquest of the POTA, but always forgets that Dawn of the POTA (and to an extant War for the POTA) pulls a lot from Battle for the POTA. Battle and Dawn especially have a lot of similarities, when I first saw Dawn I remember thinking “holy shit this is like a good version of Battle” lol
I love it too, I would still put the modern trilogy and kingdom above Burton's remake but Tim Roth is one of the best villains in the franchise and Danny Elfman's score and the prosthestics are still phenomenal.
Great video and I agree on your top 5 but I Have to see Rise again. But I also liked Battle even with the lower budget. That Caesar learned the lessons new Caesar learned in Dawn
1. Dawn 9.5/10 2. War 9/10 3. Rise 8/10 4. Kingdom 7.5/10 5. OG 7/10 Haven’t seen the others in so long but I’d imagine those 5 would still be ranked the same
My ranking of the POTA franchise: 10. Beneath the Planet of the Apes 9. Tim Burton Movie 8. Battle for the Planet of the Apes 7. Escape from the Planet of the Apes 6. Rise of the Planet of the Apes 5. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes 4. Planet of the Apes 3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 2. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 1. War for the Planet of the Apes
Conquest and Battle seemed like Fox was trying to gauge whether to keep putting these movies out theatrically or just go ahead and shift it over to TV, which they eventually did. The budget for Battle was only a third of the first movie, and Battle and Conquest were both handed over to J. Lee Thompson, who while he did make the original Cape Fear, was more or less a director for hire by the 70s who primarily made Charles Bronson movies. For Battle, Fox didn’t want an auteur, they just wanted someone who could shoot a movie in 6 weeks so they could keep selling Dr. Zaius action figures.
My Planet of the Apes Franchise Ranking: 1. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) 10/10 2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) 10/10 3. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) 10/10 4. Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) 6/10 9. Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) 1/10 10. Planet of the Apes (2001) 1/10

Giamatti & Tim Roth give it a spark, and no clue at all what Helena Bonham Carter is doing but I was entertained.) 9. Battle (Clear cheapness aside, all of the character work here is extremely shallow. This would be done better in Rise & Dawn so it can't quite be saved by novelty. Roddy McDowell is especially terrific here.) 8. Kingdom (Confused political messaging, a retreading second half, lotta great ideas that it doesn't pick up on and instead comes across a bit more like weaponizing our investment, but undeniably superb craftsmanship. Loved the first half though, really really wanted more of that.) 7. Rise (Just a really nice adventure movie. Easier to take for granted now but so much of this is carried on the back of Serkis and Weta's VFX work, all of the emotions the apes go through are so pronounced and devastating that the boring, underdeveloped human stuff gets easier to glide over.) 6. War (Can't help but feel tha 5. Beneath (Na I think it's perfect for the franchise; not a fan of how the first half just rehashes the first one but less interesting but everything in the second half is fascinating and deeply nihilistic. Lots of incredible commentary here.) 4. The OG ( 3. Dawn (A smart, wonderfully sparse political conflict between races while also being a Greek tragedy of lost & found family. Tight, taut, terrific.) 2. Conquest (I don't need sophistication; this is a thundering, angry, beautiful social rally. It's small but feels major, with incredible design work and alot of great great scenes.) 1. Escape (Zira & Cornelius best couple in cinema, just following them around is delightful and it doubles as a superb satire instead of JUST highly pointed political commentary. Not to mention how it so smoothly transitions into the sorrower, inevitable second half - just has everything you could want in an apes movie, unquestionably my favourite.)

4) War
3) Kingdom
2) Dawn
1) Rise
As much as I think this new trilogy has great potential it’s seemingly impossible to beat the last trilogy
anything is possible with enough love and faith brother
Its definitely not impossible lol
@@ALANtt It's one of the best trilogies ever, and the fact that Kingdom is pretty obviously the worst of them all (still super good bot not as good as the other 3), it already has way too much ground to make up for the next 2 installments, it's impossible at this point.
@@educatedduck6618 yes exactly my point
I really wanted to like Kingdom but I just can’t bring myself to rate it that highly. I feel like it doesn’t compare to any of the other 3 movies of the new trilogy. It always felt almost boring, and I feel like it didn’t do enough to make me that interested in the plot that was there. For me it goes:
1) Dawn: 9.5/10
2) War: 9/10
3) Rise: 8.5/10
4) Kingdom: 5/10
Been awhile since I have seen the original 4 sequels, but feom memory agree about the bottom 5 movies. I would, however, rank my top 5 at 1- Dawn, 2-Rise, 3-original 1968, 4- Kingdom, and 5- War. Great video! Will be checking out some of those books. Love your ranking videos!
I’ve only seen the caesar trilogy and kingdom (which I’ll have to change soon) but I would probably go
1. Dawn
2. War
3. Kingdom
4. Rise
1. Dawn
2. Rise
3. Kingdom
4. War
(All still very strong movies)
I'm in the same boat. All are great but War should've been better. Escaping from a prison seemed like a bit of a rehash from Rise.
Same exact list!
@@dfcintronit was, and coming from Koba to the General gave it less of an impact; for me anyway.
I would have put "Beneath" higher on the list just 'cause the choir is awesome
My ranking
4. Kingdom
3. War
2. Rise
1. Dawn
All top notch movies though 👌
I can't lie Rise, Dawn and War are all 10/10 imo, definitely loved the ranking Sean!!!
1: War
2: Dawn
3: Kingdom
4: Rise
You always give awesome insights, Sean! You’re the man! WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!🎙️🤓🦍👊🏾
Amazing video Sean! I’m watching the original 5 and remake right now but here is the ranking of all the films I have seen.
#1 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Koba and Caesar’s battle is epic!)
#2 War for the Planet of the Apes (Steve Zahn’s character made me laugh quite a lot!)
#3 Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (Loved new characters and loved the villain!)
#4 Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Amazing film but lacks of action in the first 2 thirds!)
I think the Cesar trilogy did something incredibly rare, where every film is better than the last. They're each incredible. The only problem is, War is so emotionally haunting, I can't watch it very often. That said, with what that film was going for, that's a compliment. No film in the series asks the question as to whether humanity is worth saving better than this one, and it's a question that's been there from the start.
the new trilogy i compare to the nolan batmans. it takes something that seemed silly or corny on paper, batman/planet of the apes and takes it super serious and gives a realistic depiction of how the story could actually work in the world we live in and you actually buy it. and just like nolans batmans the ranking is 2,1,3
1. War
2. Dawn
3. Kingdom
4. Rise
1.Dawn and Kingdom, equal
2.Rise
3.War
I like the first one and the Tim Burton one alright.
Sean “the Goat” Chandler 😎
My personal ranking
10:beneath
9: conquest
8:2001 remake
7:battle
6:escape
5:rise- I absolutely love how this movie tells ceasers story I just have it at 5 because it’s the setup to all that we get later on and the next 4 movies are all amazing in their own right
4:original- still works, and is such a triumph in cinema and despite heavy themes they work. It’s just dated in certain aspects and the first 30 minutes take a bit to get going
3: kingdom- planet of the apes is back and just as good as ever, the only real issues I had with the film was how long it took to meet proximus ceaser and how little screen time we got. And Raka should not have died but I know why he had too in the story
2- war pretty flawless film that mixes so many different elements that most of the time don’t work together but finds a way to put it all together. Ceaser’s send off ended his trilogy perfectly
1-dawn- perfect planet of the apes film, Koba is such a compelling villian where the audience can hate him for what he does but can see where he’s coming from. And ceaser and his dynamic with the humans works so well in this movie so definitely my number 1
I haven’t seen the old ones unless you count the Burton movie but would rank the movies
1. Dawn 10
2. War 9.5
3. Kingdom 8
4. Rise 8
I'm watching kingdom on my birthday I guess you could say "WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY"
i liked rise the most over the past decade
WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!
Just finished kingdom quite fun
I have never understood everyone’s hate for beneath the planet of the apes. I think it’s the best of the originals. It’s plot is crazy entertainment here’s my ranking
1. Beneath

3. Rise
4. War
5. Dawn

7. Remake
8. Conquest
9. Escape
10. Battle
Great reviews Sean!
For me it starts
1. Dawn
2. War
3. OG Apes

Then I have no idea lmao
yes I loved 1 to 3 ranked versions.. I liked those ones...
1. Original (10/10)

4. Rise (8/10)
5. Kingdom (8/10)
6. Dawn (8/10)
7.Conquest (7/10)
8. Battle 6/10)
9. Beneath (I gave it 6/10 then but in retrospect it feels more like a 4)
Haven’t seen the Burton version yet
I scrolled until I found the list I agreed with.
Like me you forgot POTA 2001.
Even Beneath is at least is brisk enough and they injected something new.
Man, I still remember your first ranking in 2017. I feel old.
1 war
2 kingdom
3 rise
4 dawn
5 PotA (1968)
6 escape
7 conquest
8 PotA (2001)

10 battle
I dont like doing an unfinished ranking, but heres mine minus Tim burtons and Kingdom
8. Battle
7. Beneath
6. Escape
5. Dawn
4. Rise
3. Conquest
2. OG 1968

My ranking (of the ones I’ve seen)

6. Escape
5. Conquest
4. War
3. Dawn
2. Original
1. Rise
I haven’t seen Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes yet but I’m really excited to watch it.
1. Rise
2. Kingdom
3. War & Dawn are tied because I can’t make up my mind.
Haven’t watched the others :P
When you look at it, though, it seemed (especially in the 70s) that just about any hit movie had a chance of getting a TV spin-off. But for every “Odd Couple” or “MASH,” you had a “Delta House (Animal House sequel series),” “Shaft,” “The Bad News Bears,” “Logan’s Run” or “9 to 5.” The blu ray of Blazing Saddles even contains the failed pilot of a TV adaptation with Louis Gossett, Jr. as Sheriff Bart. Studios have never been afraid to beat a dead horse.
I still consider the original Planet of the Apes to be the best in the franchise, but I get why the trilogy from the 2010’s is so beloved.
Dawn of the planet of the apes is my second favorite movie of all time! I love everything! The story, the characters, the visuals, the directing, everything. It’s so good!
1. War
2. 1968
3. Dawn
4. Rise
5. Kingdom
6. Escape
7. Conquest
8. Remake
9. Battle
10. Beneath
I completely agree except for the fact that I actually like Beneath
10. Beneath
9. Battle
8. Remake
7. Conquest
6. Escape
5. Kingdom
4. Rise
3. Dawn
2. War
1. Original
Andy Serkis may be the most underrated actor of all time, and Toby Kebbell gives one of the greatest villain performances ever as Koba
my ranking
10-beneath
9-conquest
8-battle
7-oringal
6-escape
5-2001
4-kingdom
3-rise
2-war
1-dawn
I actually love the Tim Burtons Planet of the Apes. Never understood the hate, but I love it!
I’m one of the few too .
I don’t think it’s as good story wise as the original but I think it’s definitely got the best effects and costumes.
1. Dawn 9.5/10
2. War 9/10
3. Rise 8/10
4. Kingdom 7.5/10
5. OG 7/10
Haven’t seen the others in so long but I’d imagine those 5 would still be ranked the same
My ranking of the POTA franchise:
10. Beneath the Planet of the Apes
9. Tim Burton Movie
8. Battle for the Planet of the Apes
7. Escape from the Planet of the Apes
6. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
5. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
4. Planet of the Apes
3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
2. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
My Planet of the Apes Franchise Ranking:
1. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) 10/10
2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) 10/10

I’ve only seen the original, the remake from 2001, and the recent films. Here’s how I’d rank them:
1. Dawn (5 out of 5)
2. War (4.5 out of 5)
3. Kingdom (4.5 out of 5)
4. Rise (4 out of 5)
5. The 1968 original (4 out of 5)
6. Planet of the Apes 2001 (3 out of 5)
I plan on watching sequels to the original soon since they’ve dropped on Hulu…🤔

5. '68
6. Escape
7. Beneath
8. '01
9. Conquest
10. Battle
10. Burton's disaster (Faceless work, he seems bored at the wheel here. He's not a socially conscious filmmaker so it just plods along. Giamatti & Tim Roth give it a spark, and no clue at all what Helena Bonham Carter is doing but I was entertained.)
9. Battle (Clear cheapness aside, all of the character work here is extremely shallow. This would be done better in Rise & Dawn so it can't quite be saved by novelty. Roddy McDowell is especially terrific here.)
8. Kingdom (Confused political messaging, a retreading second half, lotta great ideas that it doesn't pick up on and instead comes across a bit more like weaponizing our investment, but undeniably superb craftsmanship. Loved the first half though, really really wanted more of that.)
7. Rise (Just a really nice adventure movie. Easier to take for granted now but so much of this is carried on the back of Serkis and Weta's VFX work, all of the emotions the apes go through are so pronounced and devastating that the boring, underdeveloped human stuff gets easier to glide over.)
6. War (Can't help but feel tha
5. Beneath (Na I think it's perfect for the franchise; not a fan of how the first half just rehashes the first one but less interesting but everything in the second half is fascinating and deeply nihilistic. Lots of incredible commentary here.)
4. The OG (
3. Dawn (A smart, wonderfully sparse political conflict between races while also being a Greek tragedy of lost & found family. Tight, taut, terrific.)
2. Conquest (I don't need sophistication; this is a thundering, angry, beautiful social rally. It's small but feels major, with incredible design work and alot of great great scenes.)
