- My 2017 graduation project about childhood indoctrination.
A few of you know by now that my mother grew up in a very religious cult. She was strong enough to escape by her teeth and got my sister and I out of that lifestyle when I was around 12 years old.
What always confused me the most about the media’s take on indoctrination was it’s often represented as “Hate” towards things that fell outside of the used doctrine. But from my own experience, that wasn’t the case at all. The indoctrination I know happened under the name of “Love”. Weaponized love.
This project was made to show the subtle ways indoctrination can happen and that it often isn’t ruled by an iron fist, but by a loving household instead.

Holy shiiiiit. This is gorgeously made and damn that last part hit hard. I thought it was about a mom trying to mold her son into a version of himself she wanted him to be. Like pressuring him into him getting a job he didn't want and preparing him for that moment his entire life causing him to miss out on all of life's little pleasures but daaaamn. I was wrong.
I loved the use of colour to show how depressing this kid’s life became over time, friends, kind gestures, a childhood, kicked away for some reason (you know the one),
The suit provides so much contrast, and also represents the chains of his future “career”, and when he takes it off to play football (soccer) with the other kids, it almost looks like a huge weight was lifted off his chest, like he was finally going to get a childhood that he dreamed of, always peering out of the shutters to have some semblance of life. Subconsciously yearning, for a way to connect with people his age, Real friends.
But the contractors said no.
It drives a man, without a hint of colour in his life besides his mother’s clothing, to deep, deep depression, dragging him further, and further, what use is improving if his life is spent blowing the colours out of some university somewhere anyway.
It’s time:
By now, he’s accepted his fate, I love how it’s initially painted as him going to the university for education, like she was going to force his life away for a misguided purpose for HIM, not one of whatever organisation he’s dying for.
His smile, one of relief, finally, an end to it all, and a wonderful sight to end it on.
All the friends he could’ve made, all the places he could’ve went, it was sacrificed for a greater purpose, right?
He’ll get it in the next life, right?
Whatever, it was worth the pain and loss, at least, he won’t have to feel it anymore.
Also, on a semi-unrelated note, the contrast with the “rest of the university” compared to him, you can see they’ve so much colour, so much life and happiness,
it’s like a parade compared to him, in so many ways.
Well, there’s only so much space and time.

Phenomenal visual storytelling. Without any dialogue you've told a story thoroughly and clearly! Based off your description, I think your animation nails it. I love the idea of shutters here. Because shutters are what allows the light to come in or be blocked out. There's a lot of layers of complexity here. Weaponized love especially hits hard. Shutters can be seen as forms of relief from harsh light or heat of the day and when closed they can create an intimate and cozy space. However, light is needed to thrive. You do an amazing job with the idea of light and storytelling here. The office where our protagonist is about to sign his contract has only a single lamp light source, which is very telling. If the outside world's light represents "enlightenment" i.e "the truth", this dark office holds none of it. Only something artificial and it's dim at best. When our protagonist signs the contract and is contemplating his life, he closes the shudders. He's cutting himself off from that outside space and solidifying his resolve. You use light in another really interesting way at the end when the van doors open and instead of shudders cracking to reveal soft light, a harsh light of the outside world hits him in the face. When he enters the station, his back is turned to said harsh light which mimics the scene we saw with his mother earlier on in the video. It's a fantastic idea to parallel these worlds of dimly lit intimate spaces with little light to when he's playing with his friends outside where the light is everywhere and natural. However, it's not harsh lighting at all. The harsh lighting only appears when his mother does, blocking out everything else around her. The relationship to his mother comes through very clearly. He truly loves her and it feels she really does love him, yet the eeriness comes through very distinctly as well. I think the way you use lighting is what really helps you pull that off. As he feels more pressure to please her, to want to make her happy and do "the right thing", light and hope steadily withdraw from his life via the office and the scene where he contemplates his choice. By the time the harsh light hits him, he shuts his eyes and faces his back to it as he's made his decision and he is not changing his mind. Fantastic work!!! I love this animation :DDD

the last 15 seconds hurt a lot
I was trying to guess what sort of job the mum was trying to push the son towards. Was it a spy? An assassin? But then the end made it all clear and my heart sank. Very well done 👏🏼

This is so powerful and the style is phenomenal! This put me on the verge of tears because of how beautiful and sad it was. Not one word was said, but you can just feel everything along with the music. Keep up the amazing work, Jamie, you're doing great things!
It is so beatifully done! All animation, storytelling, plot, character design, it is great! The only issue I have is that we don't that the aging process affect that kid. It's litterally just it.
Man this was just, wow! So beautifully colored and animated. I thought I knew the plot but I was wrong, such a great and sad twist that actually makes sense when you think about it. Also the characters designs are very unique and expressive, and the music is very well made too, just such a well done animation all in around.

oh wow this was fantastic, I grew up mormon and this really hit close to home. i totally expected him to be trained to be ready for a mormon proselyting mission based on the tags, but then...i know it's probably not what you were referring to, but we're really encouraged to give up everything for the church, even our lives. wonderful animation and story, i teared up at the ending

This reminds me a lot of past cartoons for some reason despite the not so joyful emotion, but I can say well done
This is so sad. I could see the mom was trying her best and loved her son, and thought this was the right that to do and wanted the best for him. It's kinda hard to know what the story is showing from the naked eye, without any interpretation like why he had too... I dunno explode himself?? But its clear how the mother wanted the best for her son and thought what he did was the right thing and was proud of him even if it meant him dying. :'(

Many point out that at first they thought the story revolved around a mother controlling her son to direct him to an "ideal future" even at the expense of experiences such as fun and friends. After seeing it, I think that even if it is not 100% what the comments said, in a way they were right. and that is the most horrible thing, in the eyes of this woman, and many parents that she is representing, this is the "ideal future" for her son, to be a tool of her ideology (whatever it is, it depends on each situation) she is happy, proud, she knows that she will lose her son, the worst thing that can happen to a father, but it is okay, because she will go in the name of the cause and that is worth it.
Right? These twisted ideals are more valuable than his own son, and in the end I think that boy knew it, dying being encouraged by your own mother, what could be more cruel than that?
Indoctrination and brainwashing are cruel bitches.

Also, be careful, just because one system approves, doesn’t mean it’s a ok,
Check with a lot of systems (each Alter is definitively their own person btw, that’s why I’m saying systems) , at least a small group of them.
I’m not a System, so take this with a pinch of salt
