  • Octopus, cuttlefish and other cephalopods are masters of camouflage, and they may be the closest thing on Earth to alien intelligence.
To better understand them, a team of scientists took a one-of-a-kind camera to the South Pacific. Their goal: to see the ocean as no human has before.

I've always been fascinated by their eyes. They look so bizarre, I always wonder how the hell do they see??

If I remember right, they cant see color the way we do. In order to pick up on hue - differences in the frequency of electromagnetic radiation - that distinctive w-shape iris scatters the light onto the back of their eyeball, where they then focus in and out of the colors. So they can see color, but only the intensity of one hue at a time (like having a b/w camera for every color). If they focus in an out of the hues fast enough, the different colors blur together to form the image. To overcome this "limit", they use differences in polarized light - the direction of electromagnetic radiation bouncing off a surface. This gives them an advantage underwater, where low light conditions and camouflage are commonplace (I'd google image search "cuttlefish see" and the image of a shrimp helped me grasp how they perceive the world). So, instead of using hue to differentiate an object, they can use the direction of light bouncing off that object to differentiate it. They also have flat flaps that allow them polarize light which they flap at each other to communicate. Finally, some animals (idk if cuttlefish do, but they would have the ability) use polarized light from stars as maps, similarish to sailors using constellations to find where they are. I hope this wasn't too much; I just find it amazing.

Ducks can see UV too.... Turtles navigation is insane… I’m positive with how advanced octopuses are, They can do a lot more than just see colors we can’t see. They have the ability to pass down knowledge from generation to generation they watch learn plan and probably a lot more than we even know they probably think we’re stupid

Second octopus: "Sure, sure...the four legged aliens.. we've heard it all before" *rolls the eyes*

POV/Perspective: I would like to see an octopus' camouflage in an environment where the perspective is different from different angles.
The octopus mimicked the coral behind itself, so you are looking at the octopus above a surface it imitates.
Could an octopus follow a shifting pattern beneath itself? Does it know the pattern beneath it shifts?
Virtual reality and camouflage could test that.
Why doesn't an octopus camouflage in the open ocean? (Maybe a white bottom and a dark top?)

    • @siyacer

Octopuses generally don't live in the open ocean. However, squid do, and many species exhibit countershading.

If octopus didn't die after their eggs hatch, and had the ability to pass information down through the generations, they may have had a shot at sentience. Maybe they still will if we don't permanently despoil the oceans.

  • @jimrennie2021

I would like to ask a what-if question. As so many of us have heard the phrase " We are all one" What if we really are. Consciousness is not limited to the human race. And if we are all here to learn from one another we are. Aren't we? Let us learn to be the best we can be toward one another.
