    Sponges (Porifera) of the deep sea play a vital role in supporting communities of life. With over 8,500 sponge species known to science, and colonising vast areas of the sea floor from the shallow intertidal zone to the continental slope and the abyssal plain of the deep, their success is extraordinary and their importance unparalleled. They are ecosystem engineers. By building reefs and cycling nutrients, they form the foundation of many communities, and have been doing so for over 600 million years. This is the wonderful world of sponges.

    I really prefer the longer videos. In the middle of the night I sometimes use your soothing voice and cadence to slow my brain down so I can get back to sleep. I came to the channel to find one of the longer videos and it turns out you posted a 15 minute one 15 minutes ago. Jackpot! I find nature videos are the best way to get me to focus on something that isn't about what I have to do at work tomorrow etc. I absolutely love nature and I absolutely love your videos. You also do background music better than anyone. It doesn't have dramatic volume changes and it's loud and noticeable without drowning out the narration.

    sponges really blur the line between animal, fungus, and plant. it's so fascinating to see how these basic mechanisms of nutrient acquisition first started to develop and diverge!

But now I understand that what you do in your vídeos is not a easy job. It takes dedication to do something so beautiful, peaceful, engaging and interesting. Some facts about Calcarea, my group of study in graduation:
    They are the only poriferans with all the types of the aquiferus systems and it's more than just 3, nowdays we have 5 (asconoid, syconoid, sylleibid, leuconoid and solenoid) (Cavalcanti & Klautau 2011);
    Although they are considered shallow water (0 m - 100 m) animals, they are also considered understimated animals, meaning they could possibly live some meters below the 100 milestone, we just haven't made efforts to find them;
    Calcarea, as the name sugests, is made of calcite (in the form of calcium carbonate), it's different from other animals that use calcium carbonate from the mineral aragonite. There's some studies trying to understand the implications of a warmer and more acidic ocean in the formation of the calcium spicules;

    You are truly meant to be the voice of all things ocean. I click on any given playlist, hit the repeat and gradually fall asleep. It is my recipe for a completely blissful sleep! Thank you!

    Sponges grow in the ocean. That just kills me. I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be if that didn't happen.
