I remember being appalled when reading about an ex RAAF Vietnam vet Huey was put on display in a town somewhere repainted as an army UH-1H chopper As a former RAAF ie I was filthy
The Australians first used the UH1B, the short frame Huey, for a few years. And then all the footage and pictures that I see are the UH1D or the long frame Huey. Did the Australians stop using the UH1B altogether when they switched? Or did they keep the B model for rear duties? If so, what year did the changeover take place from short frame to long frame?
Loved my time at RAAF Fairbairn with 5SQN 1966-67. Went on a few exercises up North and whenever the opportunity came up for a flight somewhere I put my hand up. Fantastic pierce of machinery.
Was lucky enough to get to ride in a Huey in the early '80s as an army cadet absolutely loved it. And my youngest daughter got to ride in a Black Hawk as part of the armys program for encouraging young females to join the armed services
Well done Sir they were an awesome aircraft used to love getting up in them the feeling was out of this world I always said that I would love to fly around Australian instead of in the 30,000 ft jet crop dusters ha ha stay safe all
yeah yeah hueys are great and all that , the thing that always amazed me was how much yanks were willing to cough up for a slouch hat , if i had known i could trade some for a mini gun i wouldnt have settled for a few sets of woodlands
Loved being flown around by these as a grunt in Timor, tac flying is a joy you cannot discribe! They were in N.Z service then but they were still the original Aussie choppers!💯❤💪
Didn't the RAAF during Vietnam send pilots to a town called Windora in QLD to be trained by heli mustera called sandy, I knew the fella when I was a kid
The iconic wop-wop-wop sound instantly triggers memories and feelings, doesn’t it? Here’s my story: Stationed in West Germany in 1985 I hopped a flight with a Captain in our section who needed 48 hours a year to maintain flight pay. The weather turned to shite, lightning strikes all around. “Do these ever get hit by lightning?” I asked into the headset. “Yes, but we can usually remain airborne.” He replied. Usually 😳 We ended up setting down unscheduled until the weather cleared up some. Good times 🤣
In 1979 the RAAF couldn't handle operating these helicopters with SASR in the anti terrorist role! I was head-hunted by the RAN to come here and fly in that role using the old Wessex 31Bs. Having flown in Wessex 5s (and others) of the RN in such roles! It wasn't the Huey's that were incapable? It was the useless RAAF (Crabs) who couldn't do the job! Crabs, God bless them and God protect us from them!
Gunship parts bartered for slouch hats.....Aussie know how.
and beer
that sound....iconic
To this day the sound of these helicopters puts a chill down any Vietnam vets spine
2:34 one of them in the background is my dad it brings a tear to my eye as he has passed
Fantastic Video about a Excellent aircraft .Enjoyed the show Thanks.. Happy 100th RAAF 👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Still miss them.
Nothing quite beats the Pilot saying "Handing Over"
I'll never forget seeing a formation of three flying below me in a valley near Paracombe in the Adelaide hills
The UH-1H is alot faster than the speed stated here. 204 kmh is only its cruise speed.. Its max speed was well over 240 kmh

I'd give anything for a UH-1 Huey Gunship.
Loved working on these as an INSTFITT at 3AD MIRRAD. Magic aircraft.
No One can make 'em "Dance" like the *RAAF!*
Yea
Lol… The Americans literally made the Huey. No one makes em dance like the USAF.
@@magfedmagnumUS Army…You know, the dominant user.

I like the clip of old mate stick welding shirtless with no gloves next to a grease gun. Hey at least he’s got his helmet on 👍🏻

They're even insane when used in top dressing jobs
Had the pleasure of riding in one of these in the 80's - picked up from a remote location in Blue Mountains - was fantastic
Butiful

Gotta let Big Baby Huey
I've had seen them thousands of times over the decades, I live next to the First Cavalry Division at Ft Hood TX, now it's always Blackhawks.
It is "Sinai", NOT "Siani"!
The announcer should be re-educated.

My.dad was in Australian army reserves and at Campbell barracks at Swanbourne in perth Australia and did a flight in one

Love the Huey. My first ever flying experience was a Huey doing an air assault demonstration at the Amberley Air show 1977.
