This video is dedicated to Wayne Kramer, his family, friends and fans around the world. It is also dedicated to Rob Tyner, Fred 'sonic' Smith, Michael Davis and Dennis Thompson for the music and memories.
This video is my personal story towards the music of the MC5 and hearing 'Kick Out The Jams' for the first time and also looking at 'Back in The USA' and 'High Times'.

So sad. Such an important musician. I think "High time" is one of the best rock 'n' roll-albums of all time. And all the member of MC5 were really great...

Phil, Nice tribute ! I have both versions of 'Kick Out The Jams, ' The one with the Naughty Bits has more Energy !!! Back in my early days, when listening to Rock 'N' Roll on the am radio, it was 1963 when the Kingsmen came out with their version of "Louie Louie," and the shock of the "dirty" lyrics hit the news ! However, it was soon learned the words were closer to what Richard Berry sang some years before. I have the Kingsmen cd, and even today after hearing it (many times) still hear those same lyrics ! Wayne was awesome. I found MC5 late in the mid 1990's. I met him at a hotel I worked at in1995 and saw him at the Black Cat in DC that night. Bought all MC5 and his solo stuff. RIP Brother Wayne! Wayne's album The Hard Stuff is great also. Lemmy sang for their reunion during a UK club gig on Sister Ann.

Best MC5 LP is High Time. The KOTJ intro was JC Crawford. Del Amitri used it to open some concerts circa the mid 90s.

I only ever knew the track Kick Out The Jams until about 15 years ago when I saw the album in HMV for a very low price. Naturally I bought it and loved it and bought the others a few days later. Amazing band, would have loved to see them live.

Wayne, I really hoped you'd be around longer, as you no longer abused yourself, stayed out of trouble, talked of sobriety as well as drug abuse, stayed creative always, so this is a punch to the gut. 1948-2024. rest easy, and where ever you go, I know you'll be working on a project. I enjoyed this video, but I really want to know why the bass issue on 'Back in the USA' can't be taken care of, especially now, w/ all the technology (how 'bout simple dubbing?) 55 years is enough time for a great record to be neglected. even w/ out a decent bottom, the twin guitar attack on the Chuck Berry classic, has (play it loud or don't bother) the audio equivalent of seeing a herd of eliphants coming toward a camera. a studio ass-kicking that needs more bottom .
Great tribute, thank you Phil. Kick Out the Jams album must be one of the most influential albums of all time. I bought it second hand, put it on my turntable and thought wow, what is this? How could anyone be doing this in the 60's? Anyone who loves punk, metal or rock must listen to this album, its essential.
RIP Mr Wayne Kramer. The MC 5 is proto punk/metal. Both genres owe a lot to this band. Kick out the jams was really revolutionary. Great tribute Phil. And your description of your experience as a music fan is superb.
This is the first I've heard of Wayne's passing. Damn. We lost a great rocker. MC5 is the basis of so much of the music i love, its hard to imagine the landscape of music without them. Also LOVED his guitar tutorial videos where he showed how to properly play all those classic songs. If only other rockers were so generous.

Hello Phil, A great tribute on your part to Wayne Kramer and the MC5. I grew up near Detroit and I can relate to the music that MC5 created and well as their background and message. I was very young when the MC5 were happening but my older brothers remember experiencing and hearing the MC5 back in the day in Michigan. The MC5 were a unique, influential and revolutionary band. RIP WK.

Phil I love your channel, particularly hearing your stories about how much music meant to you in your adolescence. You mentioned Reddingtons Records, I’ve just bought some metal records from an auction from the BBC archives. One of which is Paralex - White Lightning on the Reddingtons Rare Records label. I think it was recorded in 79/80. Do you know anything about this band or label? I’ve joined your patrion channel and look forward to future content! Keep up the stellar work mate!

I was lucky to see him supporting the Stranglers and Alice Cooper a couple of years ago! Another loss!
My understanding is that the band themselves were disappointed in the recording of the subsequent albums after KOTJ. And if you listen to "Back in The USA", it does seem like a letdown after the bombastic debut. Sounds more like an early Who album. They just didn't have the right people recording them. Imagine what another Kramer---Eddie Kramer---could have done with them. He made Zeppelin, Blue Cheer, and Cactus sound amazing on their second albums. So you get an Eddie Kramer or a Felix Pappalardi, or someone who knows how to record a heavy rock band, not a music critic--to produce your records---which was a mistake also made later by Blue Oyster Cult
