    Can you please mention in the video how much the video is sped up? I'm guessing most of the turning is sped up 3x or 5x

    • @ThePapa1947

      When I do speed it up it is usually 2.5- 4x.

    Yup, that's a beauty, Gary! I love the rounded shape and the two-tone coloring. Walnut is so cool for that. Yes, that is a great finish! Looks like glass. As you were holding it at the end, the bark reminded me of a totem pole. Very cool accent! Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! 😊

      Thanks Phil! A very easy piece of wood to end up with something pretty. It as just plain ol pretty before I started.
      I had planned on using shellac for the finish but thought then Polycrylic might show off the contrast better.
      The bark had me wanting to leave it rough but once I blended one end in I really liked the look of it being smooth.

    This bowl looks great...well done....but my initial thoughts gained from my experience of hardwood turning here in Australia, were that the pith would dry at a different rate to the surrounding heart wood producing cracking, so how do you overcome this issue?
    Cheers,
    Keith

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  7 месяцев назад

      Thank you Keith.
      One thing I do is turn it very thin and there is very little stress at that point.
      Or if turning a dry piece I normally do not have issues.
      The main thing with this is I have found Black Walnut to be very stable.
      And honestly I do not worry that much with the pith because the wood I turn has been pretty good about not having those issues.
      Thanks for watching,

    Thank You Gary... I LOVE BLACK WALNUT & I LOVE WHAT U DID WITH IT 😄... As you said at 13:02 "see this grain just in case it gets cut away". When I watch wood turning bowl videos. I watch the wonderful wood disappear into shavings. Sometimes for the better and sometimes not. I guess it is just part of the experience of woodworking to try and predict how to bring out the best in each and every piece. experiment

      Thank you very much tuffy. It was a hard choice to go ahead and turn deeper. Even if all the grain is still there it is down on the inside where it does not get the light to really show it off.

    Exceptionally beautiful bowl! I have two questions, if I may....First, can you tell us a bit more detail about the finishing process? Did you sand between coats of wipe on poly...and did you use the Acks products following the poly? Second, which carbide scraper are you using? Many Thanks!!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад

      First of all thank you for watching and thank you for your comments.
      The wipe on poly goes on very smoothly and when needed I used one of the fine Scotch Brite pads.
      I have wet sanded with 1200 grit though depending on if it looks like it needs it or not.
      After all was applied I then used the Acks paste. I have a video on some of my finishes and maybe I should do one on wipe on poly as it is a wonderful finish.
      The negative rake scraper I use is high speed steel.
      Thanks for watching,

    Just curious...It looks like you're using a Sorby bowl gouge; that's what I have. When you say you're using a 5/8" gouge, is that Sorby's version of 5/8"? Sorby measures theirs across the flute, but most other manufacturers cite the full diameter, so a Sorby 5/8" would probably be a 3/4" gouge from Thompson. I wonder if Sorby is unique in this way, or that a UK standard??? Whatever the case, Sorby is about the limit of my bank account. like I started with...just curious.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад +1

      So refer to my gouges by the bar size. So I suppose some would call it a 1/2 inch. It does make it confusing but I have others that cost less than a Sorby and they use the bar size.
      Sobry is a decent gouge.
      If one of those high end gouge makers would like to send me some I would be happy to test them out. If not I am happy with what I use.
      Thanks for the question it is something I have thought about.
      I think I mentioned this when I used my Sorby 1/4 inch with the 3/8 inch bar.

    Nice job. I’ve been using a poly mix that is equal parts of BLO+poly+Mineral spirits (preceded of course by Ack’s). Usually followed by a wax finish. It needs to go on real thin and given about 24 hrs. for each coat to dry.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад

      Thank you very much.
      What you are using sounds a lot like friction polish. Same recipe but shellac is used instead of poly.
      What I did on this is added a little mineral spirts to the poly even though the wipe on version is thin. But my can was getting old and decided to thin it down. I found it went on better than without thinning it. Much thinner coats and I put on many coats in a day.

    Beautiful bow Gary! Right now I'm turning a bunch of sort of live edge Black Walnut Weed pots. Mounted a little off center I leave some bark on one side and I turn it down just as you have smoothing down the bark. Finished some with shellac and some with poly acrylic. Black walnut is a favorite wood of mine and this bowl turned out to be a beautiful piece. Well done. I also like the shape of the bowl, not just the wood itself. You made the right call on the finish for this piece ... what an incredible shine!
    That new tool looks like an English bedan (French bedans are made from a square bar, while the English version is shaped like a trapezoid). The bedan is a fantastic spindle tool if it is super sharp. I use it bevel up. It can be very hard on your tool rest with 4 sharp corners.

    In what sequence in the finishing process did you use the Acks abrasive paste and polish? After the wipe on poly? I have some walnut I'm working with and trying different finishes. I will try to keep some bark on my next walnut bowl after watching you succeed brilliantly with that. Not easy since walnut bark is kind of soft and can pop off. I like the shape you came up with as well.

    • @ThePapa1947

      Thank you David. I as was pleasantly surprised at how the bark clung to the wood. I was not expecting that. But sure loved it.
      Sorry I did not mention but I always use the Acks as a polishing compound after the finish has been put on and allowed to dry. In this case the next day was fine as it has been very hot around here.
      Thanks for watching and best of luck with your walnut. Hard to go wrong.

    This is awesome, I watched this as I am doing a smaller bowl of Black Walnut, two questions: did you put wipe on poly on the inside? Is that food safe then?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you Jerry I am sure I did if I used it on the outside. As far as food safe goes most everything I make is not meant for food. A lot of people will say if it is dry and you can not smell it then everything is food safe. I have no opinion on that because I if they finish flakes off then I would not consider it food safe. And if they manufacture of the product says it is not food safe then it is not if you are selling in my mind. The manufacture does not add when it is dry it is food safe. The people who say that are giving their opinion. Myself I would put candy or popcorn in it but I would never use a fork or spoon on any turning I made.
      So if I give something and say it is food safe I will use shellac based sanding sealer and a paste like Acks abrasive paste and polishing paste. All the snack bowls I have here are done that way.
      If I wanted the outside to shine I would use wipe on poly on it then the sealer and pasted treatment.
      Sorry for not giving a real direct answer but I have to admit when people tell others that ALL finishes are food safe when dry.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

    Beautiful work! I may try the wipe on poly. In my garage shop in Phoenix, I have been having problems with the shellac sealer and topcoats. When it’s hot, they dry faster than I can wipe them on and it’s really hard to get an even finish. I’m going to try lacquer on my next bowl to see how that goes.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад +1

      Thank you Jim. Lacquer is a great finish. In the hot weather it dries real fast as well. You can do pretty good spraying it though.
      You might try the Minwax Polycrylic as well. It is water based and goes on great. I also use the Minwax water based sanding sealer first though.
      That said I just used the Minwax oil based wipe on poly and it has been very hot. It went on really nicely.
      I do wipe that on very thin. I got many coats on it. You will see it next week.

      Hi Larry, I really like the 350 CBN wheel. It gives you a nice edge without grinding too much metal off. I also have an 80 grit for shaping. It also leaves a nice burr for a negative take scraper and a parting tool.

    Such rich color tones, the bark looks great and the bark color and pattern reminds me of marble wood! Did you use the wet poly sanding method for filling grain on this?

    Watched this vedio earlier today and saw a really nice looking bowl when you finished. I have a question. When I do the inside of a bowl, I go in reverse and in doing so I can see where I am cutting better. Do you ever do the inside in reverse? And if so why not go in reverse more often?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад

      Yes I will turn in reverse just like you are talking about. To be honest I was going to on this but the screw that locks the chuck in place had fallen out and when I looked for the 4 I had bought a month ago I could not find them.
      Once I have an undercut I will do that. They must be in the little bag I brought them home in from Ace Hardware. Guess I will need to stop by and get more and then I will find that bag LOL

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад

      Thanks James. i will use what ever tool will do the job. Some of them say a negative rake scraper is cheating.
      I say it is a great tool. All I used at work as a wood pattern maker was scrapers. We ground them from very good steel.
      Turned things over 6 foot in diameter with them and would use nothing else. It was all about accuracy. You can cut much more accurate with the tools I used back then.
      I do enjoy using a bowl gouge and will use it everywhere I can. But I am not ashamed to grab a carbide if needed.

      @@ThePapa1947 Out of interest Gary, how did you prevent the "bark beauty spot" from destabilizing? Was it a combination of lathe speed and chisel sharpness or just plain luck? What grits did you go down to? I am a pen turner but haven't crossed to the "Dark Side" to do bowls yet; my lathe speeds are always in the high range for pens. Cheers, David, Beachmere Queensland Australia

      Well David I could tell it was really good but it was trying to lift in on one side. Once I had the shape I sharpened up and took a light pass. That did the trick. I sanded 400 grit. The most I use is 600 but 400 will do what you need.
