But paradoxically, many of the communities that are being battered by natural disasters are still choosing to back Donald Trump, a vocal climate denier. The Guardian’s Oliver Laughland and Tom Silverstone head to south-west Louisiana to find out why

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov
Strictly that is exactly what democracy is. Democracy is about wants, not about facts.
Republicans loves not to know
Undereducated people living in a very complex world prefer easy answers to difficult questions. Trump promises simple remedies while he too has no capacity to understand complex issues, and people see themselves in him. The blind leading the blind.
The more ignorant, the easier they are to manipulate.
He loves the uneducated
Yeah, you. You’re so ignorant and will never see the truth.
@@mihueeggroll1818Enlighten us. What is "the truth"?
And trump wants to defund education
I do not see ignorance except for the country club types, and that insurance commissioner weasel. These people fight for their daily existence they cannot afford to be worried about the future. The first lady admits that she knows about climate change, but they need to pay the bills now. The import tariffs on shrimp cut out competition from developing countries and they could ask for better prices. The food truck lady likely suffers from people leaving (so fewer customers) so that was wrong thinking.
The fisher (the last person shown) suffers the outfall of toxic plants, which could easily be made to pay a bit more and have less profits, and they would not poison the environment. Biden has not done much to boost the EPA.
But everyone in the world is struggling with inflation! If only they could understand this. The cost of food has gone up in Europe too. Trump cannot solve it as we are all going through job losses due to modern technology, the effect of Covid and after effects of natural disasters etc. They need to poke their heads outside of the bible and America.
well, the people who support right-wing politicians have now become so unaware of politics in general that they simply blame anything on the centre or left, including issues like worsening healthcare, rising rent, rising cost of living -- when those problems can only be solved by more left-leaning policy. it's insane.
What they also fail to recognize is that Trump has no real solutions endorsed by economists.
get educated man....its an embarrassment what you txt
But didn't you know, America is the only country in the world.
You can’t buy your way out of severe weather events, which is exactly what the Paris Climate Accord is based on.
You can’t fix Stupid.
Because basic scientific literacy is nonexistent in Louisiana.
It's also missing from the guardian as there's zero evidence of increased extreme weather.

@@Robert-cu9bm why do you lie?

One cannot save idiots from themselves, they will always find a way.
But that's Democracy and as Churchill once famously said "Democray is terrible but all the other systems are even *worse* " 😖
I understand that life in the last few years have been hard for the people in this community, but that’s because of back-to-back city destroying hurricanes that are stronger and more frequent because of climate change, not Joe Biden’s policies.
Don’t forget the environmental impact from the chemical plants and fracking. Regardless of whether they realise it or not; even if Trump does get back in, he can’t do anything useful for these people.
Because they are ignorant and all hope is lost. They could be smacked in the face by his incompetence and the proof he gives no s**** about them yet they'd still vote for him.
This is the concerning issue. When he looses, they'll all still insist "it was stolen".
When?
Oh, dear...
I wish he doesn't just to see your faces.

The gentleman said it: " I know nothing of politics". When sheep sleep, wolves take control. Doubt, pride, lack of motivation, lack of curiosity and self pity can collectively turn a demographic into a stale dead end. These folks need to find out who's stealing their resources and take the reins of their local and state's government. That takes some extra effort even after a hard day's work. -- and to think Trump, a wolf if there ever was one, is their savior is an incomprehensible rationale when he has no comprehension on what the disenfranchised truly suffer.

Hence, the lack of empathy I have towards these people. Particularly the dummies that reside in red states. Here's some thoughts and prayers, though!
Ignorance is the penalty for pride.
Religion has destroyed peoples mind and their ability to critically think. Many people have a hard time saying it, but i am tired of consoling their delusions. Your religion is 100% IMAGINARY
Religion has been decreasing over the years. But the people who used to or would have been devout now believe in conspiracies. It's more about the way they are than religion or another thing. They can't critically think and can't empathize so they fall into these holes
Hmm... What? 🤔

They forgot about free will.
They accurately prove the Albert Einstein quote: "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the universe!"

I’m from the south but haven’t lived there since the early 1980s. I was a student of American history and the south has been running this country from the very beginning. Even something as complicated as the electoral college was instituted to protect southern rights and to diminish non-white voting rights.
Many people in the south still strongly believe that the confederacy was a good thing and they have a lot of pride about that. It seems like the same thing with January 6, this was an insurrection and yet, those people in someways are honored and called heroes.

A pathologic gambler will keep betting until he 'wins', otherwise all the money he lost before will never be recovered.
People who are “conned” rarely report the crime to the police, the embarrassment is a helpful tool conmen use to keep their victims quiet. Trump is a conman.
According to NASA, the global average sea level has risen by four inches in the last thirty years (since 1993). Moreover, the average sea level rose by 0.3 inches only from 2022 to 2023. The rate has surged in the past 30 years; the global sea level rose on average 0.07 inches per year in 1993, but the current rate is 0.17. This acceleration is due to global warming and the development of the El Niño phenomenon.
Nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population lives in coastal areas where the sea level affects the frequency of flooding, shoreline erosion, and storm hazards.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the average sea level has risen eight to nine inches since 1880. Global warming is causing the average sea level to rise in two ways. Firstly, by melting glaciers and ice sheets, which add water to the ocean, and second, by expanding the volume of the sea as the water gets warmer.
This was reported by fact-checking outlet Logically with the headline: "Trump's estimation of the velocity of the sea-level rise is inaccurate"
And Trump wants to dismantle NOAA, such that their climate science research would be stopped. These people in the south continue to vote against their own interests because they believe the economy is more important than the climate. What they don't understand is that their financial livelihoods directly depend on the climate, And their lack of economic comprehension is equally as shocking, as demonstrated by the first gal interviewed here.

Part of the challenge seems to me is that we need to come clean and make it clear that the positive effects of any changes we might make to avert a ‘climate crisis’ will not be felt by anyone in this video. We could cut CO2 emissions to zero today, but any reversal of anthropogenic warming will still continue for some time. I think we have to try to appeal to the love of their children and grandchildren. Our heirs will bear the brunt (or enjoy the results) of whatever sacrifices that we make now.
How does Guardian know this particular hurricane we caused by climate change? 🤔
This proves that you can't use reason to get through to someone when reason wasn't used by them to believe what they do. Sad as it may be, especially for them to believe things that really can't be true. You know you're possessed by a cult when you see this in yourself. If you can see it.
