The Ending of The Matrix Trilogy Finally Explained

- Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, The Matrix trilogy was one of the most influential action sci-fi movies of its time. The Matrix film series popularized the “bullet time” visual effect, and some of its action sequences have become some of the most iconic in the genre.
The trilogy also gained a large following because of its many references to philosophical, religious, and spiritual ideas. The symbology incorporated in the trilogy has created lively debate among film buffs and critics.
It’s why even though The Matrix Trilogy is highly entertaining, its ending is still confusing even to some of its most hardcore fans. Here’s an explanation of the ending of The Matrix trilogy.

Do you think they'll ever reboot or continue the Matrix universe?
yes they’ll definitely continue it
Continue
well... I could watch a new Version of it, not a reboot, but the next generation post Neo... The source breaks the peace so a new generation of Humans raise to defend Human kind, a lot of years have passed so Humans are now a formidable match to the machines, more humans keep waking up so the machines are getting weaker...
Expand the origins like the animatrix did but in live action format. Now that would be hella interesting.
Looper yep cause Hollywood has run out of originality
I just finished watching the trilogy on Netflix. I hadn't watched these movies since '03-'04 when I was 11. It's pretty cool re-watching these movies as an adult and being able to enjoy the references, story.

It's disrespect. He doesn't call Neo by the name he prefers, but rather calls him by his dead name, "Mr. Anderson." The film series is an allegory for transgender people. Just look at the creators of the film series.

@@stratus10601The first one was great, but the second and third one really expanded the themes and world building. They weren't perfect movies by any means, but, as far as action movies go, they were one of the few blockbuster trilogies that were truly thought provoking.

Agent Smith is V, antagonist of the fascist British state, restorer of Fireworks Night.
They're taking the hobbits to Isengard
I have a couple of other interpretations. Smith and Neo are different sides in an equation. Neo getting stronger equals Smith getting stronger. By killing Neo in the end, one side is getting zero. So the other side had to go zero too. The Oracle knew this and played along, hoping to create a situation that would make the machines willing to accept a truce or peace. The architect / machines did not know this. Hence the ending comment "you played a risky game."
Ah so that debate and argument at the end makes sense. No wonder the architecture said that peace will not be long
That’s 100% what I took away from but very well said. I’m stoked to see how the story unfolds for the 4th movie and how it all ties back into the original trilogy
Are you saying they are programs?
@@joshuasmith4230 Since Humans can get overwritten bei programs, they can be considered as similar. So..yes.

It's more complicated than that, from what I understand. Smith had to infuse his code with Neo's code while Neo's body was jacked into mainframe of Matrix, so that the Machine God could eradicate (through Neo's body) Smith and reboot the Matrix. And only Neo's body could work for that purpose because for some mumbo jumbo reason Neo's body/consciousness on it's own, was linked to machines ''in real world'' on far greater level than any other casual human.
Cant believe its nearly 20 years since the first matrix movie came out...june 1999.. Time flys

Take forever for reload to come outt.
Ha aint that the truth.
The 90s movie industry head started with T2 and finished off with the Matrix... 90s Films were AWESOME!
No reboot needed...let this trilogy go down in history as a classic
If done right, I would be for a Netflix series or movies that are in the X-years future. Like some machines and humans fighting against others that want to go back to the full old Matrix slavery? Then you could have machines and people bouncing in and out of virtual, and you get both perspectives on various subjects? But a full reboot, please god no.
Agreed
@Arthur Menges Exactly...let the first go down as a classic and the other two as lessons about too much of a good thing.
Pretty sure a "strong woman" will be the new neo
I would prefer another movie. No reboot. Keep the same universe. What happens next?
So basically the machines always allow rebels (free humans) and "the one" so that they can seek out the weaknesses of the Matrix. The Rebels think they are beating back the matrix and the machines and freeing mankind but in actuality they are only strengthening the Machines hold on humanity because those rebels showed the machines the weaknesses in their matrix and now the next version of the Matrix (humanity's prison) is that much stronger and harder to fight back against. And this is supposed to keep happening until it is perfected
Very good summary👏🏻👏🏻
Ah, but life and love finds a way!
The Architect said they already taken over Zion 6 or 7 times and have become very effective at it. What does that even mean? Almost seems like there is multiple universes or timelines or simulations. I'm so confused when he said that. Can anyone explain this?

The Smith doesn't have a choice but only has a purpose. Beautifully explained.
imalive and Neo doesn’t have a purpose, only a choice. Smith asks him “Why?” And he simply responds “because I choose to.” Fatalism vs Existentialism.
I.e., Neo make his own purpose instead of mindlessly following the one that he was programmed to follow.
it was inevitable
Smith says purpose is what was taken from him by Neo, actually. It's what caused him to become a virus to the system as he was angry about being robbed of purpose. He has neither choice nor purpose, Neo has both.

Jarlaxle Daerthe why
One thing that wasn't mentioned regarding the final battle with Smith was that the prime Smith had copied over the Oracle, and that Smith was the one fighting Neo. That's why he said "Everything that has a beginning had an end, Neo." It was the Oracle speaking through Smith, encouraging Neo to accept being overwritten by Smith, causing not just a fusion of sorts between Neo and Smith, but also including the Oracle. Upon being overwritten, the machine Mecha sends a fatal virus through Neo's physical body into his form in the Matrix, which has become the prime Smith. This virus corrupts him, amd subsequently all the other Smiths, causing 'splosions, also killing Neo in the process.

Thank you so much for this video, it makes so much more sense and I like it even more.
Not true at all.
The reason why Smith got destroyed in the end was that Neo was Jacked into the mainframe during that battle.
As Oracle told Neo "When the purpose of a programme is done, it has two choices. It can either return to the source and be destroyed or Hide somewhere in the Matrix. That's what Smith was doing. He didn't return to the source for deletion on its own. But when he copied on to the Neo, he got delivered to the source.
And what happened with Neo after the fight? He is dead? Or he is matrix itself? Where did the machines transport his body?
@@Kejsler Machines transported his body back to the Zion. Of course he died. Smith was copied onto his conscious and the machines had to destroy every trace of Smith.
@@evilplaya6350 But the Sati in the end asked the Oracle "Will we ever see him again?,, and she answered I suspect so. So what it mean?
@@Kejsler the Oracle means as another version of The One. When the cycle is inevitably rebooted, when the peace between man and machine ends.
@@Kejsler The Matrix wasn't destroyed after the final fight. It reloaded for its 7th version. And the equations will still have the remainders in the newer version. That remainder will take the form of The One in the 7th version as well. Thats what Sati meant.

Who else came here after watching the matrix 4 trailer as a refresher?
Really cool how he predicted the theme of the new Matrix when he said that machines would learn to use their love against them
The thing about the One is that technically anybody can do it by saying "no" to death inside the Matrix. When Trinity kissed Neo as he lay dying in the Matrix he felt it in the real world, at which point he realized he's not bleeding to death in a hallway, he is sitting in a chair. He's always known this but now he FEELS it too. And just like when you realize you are dreaming and can control the dream, Neo can now do the same thing in the Matrix. Everyone else that gets shot or something in the Matrix DIES, but if you can overcome this "directive to die" you become the One. The Architect said that 99.99% accept it but if you do the math that would mean THOUSANDS of One's in a population the size of Zion. But the Architect was not talking about the One, he was talking about red pills, which account for all the people in Zion. They (like Neo) realized something was off the their reality and refused to accept it, at some point being found, red pilled, and recruited to fight for Zion. But none of them DIED in the Matrix and refused to accept it. That's how he got all his power, that's why he would see the code itself. He basically figured out how to lucid dream in the Matrix, which is why the code glitches around him since there is no code for the ability to fly or stop bullets, he just wills it to happen and the Matrix has to accept it. This is also how he brought Trinity back to life, he WILLED the life into her and the Matrix made it true, which stopped her brain from making her body die.
thesuicidefox a couple Stories in animatrix show others auto eject from the Matrix including the "kid" who follows neo around zion & opens the gates for the Neb.
Auto ejection alone doesn't make you the one.
Immaculate conception is the prerequisite. The one is "born" inside the Matrix. Source derived consciousness within a human host.
@@DJAqueousdotcom Yes, the kid red pilled himself. He didn't die in the Matrix like Neo did. He woke up from the dream. Neo woke up IN the dream.
From what I understand death is a false construct that was created in Egypt when set killed osiris before this time no humans on earth died(atlantis, lemuria, mu) so the point of the story is to purge your spirit make it whole become the light body as to not have to be on the membrane of death.
Nice theory. One small thing, half the population on Zion was born there, never in the matrix.
Wrong, The directors and creator of the movies said Agent Smith was The One. The One is the thing or person who destroys the Matrix. Neo wanted to save The Matrix because he wants to save the humans. Smith wanted to destroy the Matrix since it will get rid of all Humans for good since they can't live outside of it as the machines are hunting them all down slowly methodically and harvesting them like crops whenever they need to refill battery cell factories.
The Matrix part 1 is in my top 10 of all time. Revolutionary and Carrie Anne Moss is in my top 5 crushes of all time.

@@jebatman756 yep, and the same goes for many other stories that came long before the matrix. why do you think people still talk about stories such as romeo and juliet for example? they're timeless.
derek221122 yes, I know and we agree. Why do you think I pointed it out?
no one thought to just ask the brothers who made this.....
And 20 years before that too.
John Wick series is the sequel to the Matrix. Just like Smith could exit the Matrix in a human body, Neo could copy his mind into the Matrix while his body died and thus continue to exist as a program. Unfortunately, he lost his memories in the process since it was never done before.
Nobody knows Neo copied himself so no one can find him, not even the Architect, because when he copied himself and lost his memory, he basically formatted his mind and also lost his The One unique signature so now he's seen by the Matrix as just another program.
That's when John Wick starts. It's inside the Matrix and Neo is just trying to adapt. Some of his combat skills were left in his code so he decided the best way to exploit those would be to become an assassin. Why an assassin and not just a Kung Fu trainer or something benevolent? Well, because when he merged with Smith, some of Smith's code was left in him, corrupting him but not entirely. That's why he chose to retire and start a normal family.
Explains his almost superhuman combat skills, his bullet sponge abilities, Laurence Fishburne appearing again (it's his mind trying to put itself back together showing him familiar faces) and especially the last scene of John Wick 2, when all the people in the street start watching him, quite a Matrix-y moment if you ask me, like what are the odds that there's a professional hitman every 5 meters in one city?

It is indeed timeless as the matrix idea was originally from René Descartes
It baffles me how everybody simply forget what the Architect told Neo, about the origins of his powers and the fact that he is the "one": the One is just a concentration of several bugs in the Matrix. The Matrix is composed of many systems like time, space, gravity, physics and else. The Architect states that most of these systems have flawns and gliches that cannot simply be fixed (I wonder why), so he just sweep them under the carpet. What he does is to distribute these flawns and bugs on individuals inside the Matrix. The same individual may host more than one of those gliches, and eventually one may be "gifted" with several gliches from the most important systems. Upon gaining conscience of those "gifts", such individual would be able hack the Matrix itself and even scaping it, all the way to the core of the machine. This is the One, the individual who holds the exploits of the major Matrix systems, thus the power to reach (and compromise) its central server.
In fact the One having the power to severly crash the Matrix was its the real bug, he was the sum of problems from the most important equations in the Matrix.
Upon exploding Smith Neo created another bug, which was also able to hack the Matrix systems. Given that Smith main purpose was to destroy Neo, Neo himself inadvertly created a correction for the bug he was. That's why the Oracle explained him that Smith was just the other side of the equation trying to balance it. Smith was not a problem, he was the correction for the major Matrix bug: Neo. But Smith didn't understand that either, in his head he just wanted to destroy everything, but when he finally destroyed Neo he lost his purpose, he balanced the equation which allowed the Matrix to reboot instead of crashing.
In the end the profecy was not about a future where the One would save the humanity from the machines, its real meaning was that the One would cause so much problem in the Matrix that the Machine would have no other way to save it without the help of the humans. Neo being a human asked the machine to spare the humans in Zion, which the machine had no way to refuse since the One had (inadvertly) compromised its security through Smith.
Woah, dude... thank you for this. hahahaha I am excited to re-watch the trilogy now, for the first time in many years!
Many blessings and thanks for this well written synopsis.
Sounds like Jesus and the crucifixion
Dome Firmament in a way, it is. Instead of saving us in Zion, we look to ourselves and become aware like ‘oh shit, my actions have consequences upon the world and others... better tread carefully or else...’ it’s not about forgiveness of sins, it’s about becoming self aware through free will and like Jesus, Neo sacrifices himself for others to realise the bigger picture: it’s up to you. He served his purpose and quite literally danced with the devil FOR us and made the devil (in Matrix’s case, Smith) realise that he needs humans to do his bidding so it’s in his best interest to not corrupt us all. There’s a balance. P.S. Yes, i am Christian catholic but not THAT kind of Christian catholic.
@@geminiwriter8875 yeah be careful of our actions become self aware but the real Jesus forgives and doesn't seek perfection out of us because we are not hooked up to a machine we aren't perfect we are humans programmed in inperfection so Jesus came as a middle man to Yahweh we will always have room for growth
Great analysis
Great explanation. The complexity of it all, is what makes this film great.
This is FLAT OUT the only Looper video which I completely agree with.
Great job!
Man! this video was great. I love the matrix and i thought i understood it. But man this added so many details. Great job!
theres so much symbolism and stuff that makes you think in this movie. absolute classic trilogy
This explanation makes the whole trilogy make so much more sense, and feel very satisfactory.
What's really going to bake your cookies later is why do I have to watch 6 ads in an 11 minute video.
Hmm, one at the end for me. I think the YT app filters them all out
Because you haven't installed an ad blocker plugin in your web browser.
I had zero ads.
(Also zero cookies and zero noodles, but that's another story.)
I love that i was named after one of the coolest movies ever
nice :)
Trinity Siriwardena sad
You was also named after Trinity Loren :)
You weren't named after a cool movie, you were named after something REALLY sacred.
Yeah let's take comfort in that :)
Great theory ! good video
Great explanation
Soon kids won’t even know what this movie is...
Rip
My kids do. :-) 4 new red pills FTW.
What do you mean soon these new kids already don't know what this movie Is !
"There's the MCU now.. Why remember a long and bored movie like Matrix ?"
A guy said me that on Facebook a couple days ago...
@@cinevore358 the MCU sucks. I never liked it.
All about the MCU nowadays and Disney remakes lol ! Atleast they are remaking some mangas like alita.
THX LOOPER, ALL i needed was another matrix on the matrix, you sooooooooooooo SWELL !
Superb explanation
I never thought the ending was ambiguous to begin with....
REMSCAPE same
Agreed, never any doubt.
Agreed, I always see videos like this .. I always watch them just to see their take on it.. never anything new 😂
kinda dumb that movies like the matrix need a video to explain the ending when anyone who fricken watched all 3 wouldn't have a trouble understanding the ending. I guess people are to stupid these days?
@@Darqfate I knew plenty of people who needed me to explain what the matrix was multiple times after watching the first one. Never mind the sequels...
One of the clearest explanations of the Matrix Trilogy I’ve encountered! Thanks!
Best anti-virus story ever :P
Well after all these years of scratching my head at this film I think I I've finally getting it thanks to your explanation
Sati, in Pali is mindfulness or awareness, a spiritual or psychological faculty.
Sati is also Hindu Goddess who burnt herself alive in the fire of her own rage lol
did anyone notice minute 6:27 the front building was also the hotel used in John wick.
This makes the John wick theory. More stronger now.
it's the daily bugle building
That, and he uses the line “I need guns, lots of guns” in John Wick and the first Matrix. Little Easter egg for you.

The Continental, New York. Yes
Beautifully explained.
What a masterpiece analysis
The most clever part of the matrix (original) was that Rage against the Machines played "wake up" for the end credits.
@asdf I agree 100 percent!
While a big fan of Rob Dougan's work in the movie. Navras by Juno Reactor (the third movie credits) is simply a masterpiece.
I still remember watching it for the first time. I think I climaxed when Wake Up came on.
Rage Against the Machines? how many are there?
make a peace treaty with the machines and stay plugged in was the final message
Give us one more sequel only. Matrix (IV) : The Explanation
@Pol Fartin For the most part that is sadly true, but it still left a massive impact on society and pop culture that can still be seen today.
Check out animatrix an anime where you can see how it started
Priyanka CHOPRA to play the Indian girl grown up in Matrix 4
Matrix (IV) : It was all just a dream and still works at a software company and is actually delusional

I think the rule of Smith is not well explained.
In the first movie, even before new shattered him at the end, Smith was rogue. It's evident in the fact that he unplugs his ear, and talks to Morpheus, saying with Zion he will have no use. He did not want the information for the machines, but for himself. Which is why he orders the other agents to leave the room.
My only theory at this point, is that at the end of the first movie, Neo does not shatter and kill smith. But recognizing his rogue nature, he gives him the extra power willingly as an enemy of the enemy. By the end of the trilogy, existence and power of smith is the only thing that saves humanity.
Sinom Irneja omg I almost had a seizure trying to understand but if he didn’t kill smith then where is he?
I think that Smith was jealous that humans were able to get out of the Matrix. He was asking Morpheus how to get out, that is why when then other agent asked Smith what was he doing when they walked in the room where he was interrogating Morpheus. The system knew and inplanted a program in Neo's body. That is why the Oracle told Morpheus to get Neo and put a stop to the Smith program.
I'm pretty sure Neo's goal was to destroy Smith, not feed him power. How that actually happened, who knows. Not important anyway, it's just what's so.
All of the significant characters are puppeteered by The Oracle, who does not know the future, but is in such great control of both the matrix itself, and the people she interacts with, that she can create any future she wishes. She uses psychology to have both humans and programs program themselves, and eachother. The machines do not realize that their system was hijacked from very early on, and it was done by a machine that is brazenly shown to us in the final episode of The Animatrix.
Which background music did you use ? I Really Loved It ! Can You Share Its Name ?
This version of Plato's cave allegory is great. I wonder how it'll look for the next generation when everything is rebooted again.
You really appreciate the film more if you read Plato’s cave, just seeing how everything connects is so cool
@@brandonvillanueva1545 The most important book you need to read about this movie is in this movie it is the one where Neo stores his bookleg software Simuluacra & Simulation.
That depends...the time has come to make a choice...
Doesn't need a reboot but movies to expand the universe that its in. The Matrix has such a rich world and background that is the base of the story that they can make really good movies extending its universe. Reboots are usually a fail, better off expanding the world instead.
@@sparda9060 you totally missed the point. You must be a chic.
As many times as I’ve watched The Matrix Trilogy, I never linked Sati as the machine world adopting the concept of love.
It was re-released in 4K a few months back, giving it a rewatch.
Victor Alicea, how was your night?
I love this explanation. :) Full
These Movies have the Deepest Meaning of every movie ever created , You CANT reboot a Perfection .
I honestly think that the 1st matrix movie wss the best of all the 3 movies in this case
because in some cases the sequels are sometimes better than the original movie
It was perfectly self contained. I like to pretend the sequels were a hallucination I had after dropping the brown acid.
I agree, i know the other two weren't as good and generally get hated on but it was still fun entertainment.
Literally everyone shares this opinion.
You didn't watch this video got it
