I watched this shitshow last night. I loved the stats on numbers of players from Tassie. Only 3% of AFL players are from Tasmania. Yeah well only 4.7% of AFL players are from Queensland. Yet Queensland have TWO teams. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

    • @AtariPCnet
      @AtariPCnet Год назад +10

You've completely missed the point. It's far easier to sell Queensland as a destination to play/live for interstate players therefore the low participation rate of QLD born players in the AFL is irrelevant as there are other factors which make playing in QLD far more appealing (lifestyle, weather etc). The argument is that Tasmania however will rely heavily on a base of Tasmanian born players who in theory are more likely to want to stay as they will have a much harder time convincing players to move down there.

Wrong. You watch games in Tassie where you kick the ball one way, and it flies 30+ metres the other way. The average weather conditions of Tasmania during a football season aren't typically conducive to AFL style football. We can talk for hours about what AFL looks like now, and sure when players salaries average $180k they should be able to deal with a bit of wind, but the other reality is selling tickets to a venue and attracting a crowd when it's an open air stadium. For AFL to grow in Tassie, Tassie needs a roofed stadium. I don't always like or agree with Eddie, but he's nailed this, because he knows football.

Hobart is a really nice city and Tasmania is a beautiful place to travel. Launceston and Hobart get bigger crowds than GWS and the Suns get at their own home grounds for Hawthorn and North matches and I'm sure they will find creative ways to ensure they play some home games in Launceston and engage regional Tasmanians to get behind the team and make sure there isn't a Hobart-Launceston divide. Tasmania will be the only one-state team. Watch this space.

it isn't just the potential cost blowouts just to build the stadium, it would be better off just to play it safe and throw $1.5 billion at the development of the new stadium with a retractable roof, so that way it can also serve as a Cricket field, have at least 40,000 seats, as well as a venue for other events like concerts.
there are also a few other issues that will arise because of a 19th team, the talent pool, to either reduce the comp by a team, or add another team, and currently after Tassie is announced and I expect it to happen, there are still two other locations with official bids, Darwin for an NT team, and Auckland on the other side of the Tasman, another roofed stadium needs to be built in Darwin, but this time with airconditioning. and the AFL needs to figure out how they are going to keep developing players to ensure the talent pool isn't being stretched to capacity.
So the main question, who would make up the 20th team? because the AFL is going to have to announce the 20th team a year or two after the expected affirmative announcement this weekend, and to have that team fielded by the 2031 season at the latest.

I think it's because of some of the stuff they spoke about in the video. Cold weather, strong winds, and the effects they have on people's interest in going to a game. Tasmania already has less population and difficult conditions for spectators and players alike. If they put a roof on the stadium, it will make games less affected by weather, and the conditions more pleasant for fans. The other issue for lack of support is the fact that all AFL fans in Tas already have a team that they support. They won't let go of them and will only be half interested at best in a Tas team, particularly when they languish at the bottom of the ladder for years. I believe that the AFL have a clause in the contract that states that if the team isn't performing to their desired standards at the end of 8 years, it can be removed from the comp.

As a young person living down in tas (ex mainlander), I love it. But I don’t think footy player demographic will love it. You have to be a certain type of person to enjoy living down here, and you have to be ok without living with the glitz and glam and the flashy lights and nightclubs.
I think most young people (footy players especially) want to enjoy the high life with all the action etc. and tassie won’t provide that.
Personally I love footy, but I don’t think a tas team will work. All footy fans down here already have an allegiance, and I’m not sure these people will be won over and additionally, I don’t think there is a large enough pool of potential footy fans who the tas team will tap into. You’ll most likely end up with a bunch of people attending games who support tas as their 2nd team and they won’t be anywhere near as loyal to the tas team. Jack jumpers worked because no one down here really had a team they already followed in Aus. AFL would be stupid if they think the fan reception is going to be the same

"But they all live in Melbourne"... exactly! None of the guys from Tasmania are even based there anymore. There is emotional dreams - and then there's logic. And logic always shows that you should never follow something unless it is sustainable, and this just isn't. And that's not the fault of the rest of us, that's the fault of Tasmania and the fact that they've slacked in building up a population, slacked in the projected population due to not having bigger families or making the state lucrative enough to attract new people, and have slacked in infrastructure. The league doesn't exist to just give hand outs! You have to support your own boots, especially since other states are projected to boom in population, we need that money to support what we already have. There's too many struggling clubs as is.

To prevent the disasters of GC17 and GWS, they need to get the initial list building rules that allow the team to be capable of winning7-12 games in their first season as occurred with Adelaide and Port Adelaide. The new team needs to be able to target and recruit about 8-10 , 23-28 year old premiership players willing to chase coin and set up thier retirement, and for the first 5 years 50% of thier salaries need to be excluded from the TPP. This will allow new draftees to blend in with seasoned players and not get smashed by 20 goals every week compromising the integrity of the comepetition.
Don't know why James Siciliy needs to apologize the fact very few mainland draftees would want to commit 10-15 years in Tasmania. There will be very few Players like Matthew pavlich and Travis Boak drafted out of their state who will stay the course.

      Adelaide - 10

and GCS and GWS had the most generous of list build concessions of all the expansion teams and still havent delivered a flag in nearly 15 years, they also entered when the league was fully professional. See a trend here wth GCS and GWS. Expansion has the unfortunate collateral damage of diluting the talent pool and compromising many drafts. A graders are unlikely to move down to tassie (the don't need the money)but if you can convince about 8-10 B to B+ graders who have achieved thier flag may be willing to chase coin and tenure that would make them competitive from the get go. GAblett Jnr , who was a legitimate A grader, was happy to sacrifice the prime of his career for coin up at GCS but that was the exception (and he'd also had 2 flags by then) . The B and above graders that GWS "Poached" were Tom Scully , Callan Ward and Phil Davis none of them were top 50 players in the comp at the time, although Callan Ward and Phil Davis have been more than Serviceable and got them to a GF., Tom Scully was a Bust for all 3 clubs he played for. The point here is "the newbie" is unlikely is unlikely to be world beaters and "Collapse the competition". Seeding a team that can have a 40% chance of winning on any given weekend, is the best thing for all other 18 teams in the league.

so many “GWS is a failure” - theyve already played in a GF .. it took ‘footy mad’ Freo 20yrs to do that.
the Suns dont win so kick them out .. the Hawks needed nearly 5 decades just to make finals when they started.
so lets add more rubbish teams -
    Saints 1 comp in 125yrs = out.
Pies - 2 flags in last 65yrs = they can go.
Crows and Port - just 3 AFL cups between them is pathetic = start again.
Dogs - only 2 premierships in their history = finished.
Bombers - havent even won a final in 20yrs = done.
Blues - been almost 3 decades since that salary cap cheating victory = off with their heads.
North - making up the numbers for most of their tenure = merge with the Storm.
that leaves Cats, Tigers, Eagles, Swans, Lions, Dees.
suddenly there seems to be alot more quality players for Tassie to pick from .. and the remaining teams could play each other twice to make it a fair comp. 🎣

Nope. Especially after Sicily's comments. F#$k the Hawks. I've never identified them as part of the state I grew up in anyway. With that said, I appreciate the man's honesty and welcome his comments. It just gives Tasmanians even more reason to want their own club and give Hawthorn the big 🖕.
