Kenworth K100 (Trying to) First Start in a Long Time!

- Trying to fire up a K100, sitting anywhere from 5 to 20 years. It ha a Small Cam 350 Cummins and a 16 speed transmission. Couldn’t get it to pick up fuel from tanks, only would run in ether. Either way, not a project I can take on right now. Video is pretty short but I wasn’t able to film everything. Thanks!
For anyone asking, it's not currently for sale 😀
I always liked the way those old starters sounded.
Great truck AND trailer for the hobby circuit!
First time seeing a 16 speed trans with the splitter on the stick like that. Kool! Love the truck.
I believe that shifter is a Road Ranger Quadra Shift. I had the pleasure of driving one for a few hundred miles in May of 1974, when I was 18. Dad took me along on a haul and after we were unloaded, he asked me, want to learn to drive it? I said we'll ya! I'd been riding along on occasion with him for 8 yrs, watching and learning so he let me run it on the super slab. Only clutch it on the main 4 speeds otherwise the spider is like the high low of a 13 speed. Once out of 1st gear, never put the select in number 1 only as low as number 2 for instance while up shifting and you are in 1-4 only put the selector back to number 2 the upshift to second gear, 2-2, then 2-3, then 2-4. Back to 2 then upshift to 3rd gear 3-2,3-3,3-4 back to 2 upshift to 4th gear 4-2,4-3,finally 4-4 when upshifting all you need to do is select the next gear up on the air ride, let off the throttle at 2100 wait a second for it to shift and get back on the throttle. Down shifting, select the next lower gear, when you reach 1700, quickly release the throttle all the way then mash it down again and it will down shift. That half moon metal piece sticking out on the bottom below the selector slide is there to remind you, that is number 2 and don't go below this, except in first gear on the main. This is only the 2nd time I've seen this type of transmission.
It seems super odd to me. From the way you describe it I might be right!
Man i hate seeing these old girls parked up they need to be saved awesome video thanks for sharing it
You should have drained that old fuel and lines to, that fuel is bad after years, the torsion bar suspension is the best riding truck I've ever driven and I did break a torsion bar one time crossing a cattle guard and it did drop completely down on one side but I was able to limp it to Kenworth about 100 miles away, the small cam 350 is what I learned how to drive with in a 1971 W900 with a 5 and a 4 that a classic K100 cabover you have there
Hi from France, i grew up in Australia, started my career as a driver when that model truck was the norm. It's a Spicer gearbox, never got to use one, they were very common on really big équipement, road-trains etc.
Dude!! That thing sounded good when it was running! 🙂👍 May be a stuck injector pump, not 100% sure though. Nice find. Happy wrenching 🔧🔩
Is it for sale yet. Change the injectors new fuel new fluids filters it'll run.
I really think u guys should restore the whole unit would make up a good workin or showing truck
Haul cattle with it and make money!! You would turn everyone’s head pulling into a stockyard in that fully restored..
A absolute classic. KW surely made some awesome trucks.
Still do.
It would probably run if you were able to tilt the cab and loosen the injector line fittings at the injector pump, then bleed the air from them by cranking the motor over until you see fuel coming out. The truck has been sitting for so long it almost certainly has air in the fuel lines from the tanks leading to the IP. You are likely picking up the air in the lines, but I'd bet the truck can suck fuel from the tank once most of that air is purged.
Pretty much every line on the truck is dry rotten, so I bet that's the problem.
There's our winner of the day right there that's exactly what's happening especially on those
I got a 1980 Kenworth k100 an when we tried to start it the guy said it sounded like it went as far an the fly weel an stipes
I'm trying to find someone who knows about Kenworth k100s to come an help me get it running
Spent my childhood in a KW cabover. 💜💜
That's a cool truck
You might find that to get the transmission to go in reverse there is a lever up on the dash near the heater control you have to flip. Looks like the old front brake limiter control they had on Ford big trucks. Also the fuel tank on the passenger side with the funny spout is original for early 70’s,
as is the three piece roof, with fibreglass front and rear moulded sections with a riveted aluminum centre section. In 77 they went to a one piece
moulded roof. If you look at the original fuel tank it will have the year of manufacture. The serial # of the truck will be one letter, and six digits.
If the letter is a J it’s a Kansas City built truck, M is for Montreal. Might be a C for Chillicothe Ohio, but I’m not sure if they where in production back then. Someone commented that they thought the truck was newer because the cab had ladders. Not so. This truck was a upgrade option,
called “ splendour “. It had upgraded padded interior with colour tones. Torsion Bar suspension was a KW original. They where good is well maintained. You had to Jack the whole rear of the truck of the ground when greasing to do an effective job. They where smooth enough loaded.
Not my choice for hauling high centre of gravity loads back in the day like swinging beef. Called that because the cattle carcasses are cut into
quarters, and the whole load is suspended from hooks attached to the ceiling of the trailer. Nothing of the load is touching the floor.
They don’t ship beef that way anymore as the trailers where expensive to build, and it meant that each food store you delivered to had to employ
a real butcher ( meat cutter ) to get the specific cuts from the animal. In the 80’s most packers boxed the meat in “ primal cuts “, then you didn’t
need a specialist in each meat department. Sorry I got off the track. We hauled hanging beef with this suspension and it was good for some hair standing on the back of your neck moments in hilly terrain, and about town while partially loaded.
16 speed spicer transmission very nice
I love the tortionbars on the rear acsels
Pro Tip: Before recording with you're phone. Take 5 seconds and wipe off the camera lens. If you do that the video wont look so burry.
I was trained on a 350 formula Cummins great engine 350 my favorite Cummins but my favorite is the 671 Detroit drove them a lot back in the days buses and trucks
Ether the breath of death. Let it do its thing and pull fuel, heat the cylinders by turning it over for 30 seconds then let it heat soak for a few then continue on with same procedure. It'll run, or crack injectors open till fuel runs out
When I was a kid a family member had an FLC Freightliner with a Spicer 14 speed transmission. Course at the time I really didn't know the difference, but looking back now, what a weird transmission.
How did the cattle pot end up on its side? That's a pretty interesting spec'ed truck with the Spicer 4x4 and torsion bar suspension. The transmission would be neat to keep and run assuming it doesn't need any major work. Parts for the Cummins are available, but the torsion bar and transmission parts are long gone. The interior of these trucks is normally blitzed after sitting for so long. That one looks solid and a great candidate for a hobby truck.
It could be a cool project. Got blown over in a windstorm and never turned back up.
@@matthewbarnes7075 At first I figured some parts were taken from the tandem but then also figured wind is a slim possibility...
I'd say it's a 1972 model, probably late 1972. 1972 was a transitional year for the K100, with KW introducing the 108 inch BBC K100-VIT, entry ladders, and then the low mounted, flush fit door handles.
Is truck for sale? If not do you know where anymore are like it? I'm looking for 1 to restore with my kids.
I’m not sure if it’s for sale. I’m not really connected to the trucking guys, but if I find one that is for sale I’ll put it out there for yall
Seen a Dodge L1000 with that trans set up in Canada
Probably should have cracked the fuel lines, until it poured fuel while cranking it. Sounds like it'll run pretty easily, cool old cabover.
😃😃😃😃👍👍👍👌
O-H-I-O Porters 🇺🇸 Cabovers Rule! Well, I sure like seeing this old cabover! This was a bit of a teaser, but it cranked over pretty well. My dad had a new 1969 model & I loved climbing up into that truck to take a nap at 4 or 5 years old. Torsion bars…I guess that’s what they had about that time. Is it a 12 or 24 volt start? Does it have centerpoint steering? Are you planning on getting the trailer, too? This should be nice seeing this rig come back to life! How long has it been sitting? Keep it comin! 🥰🤩✌️
It's been sitting about 20 years. Used to be 24, but they converted over to 12 volt. I'm not sure on the steering. As of right now I'm not able to get the truck, but I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon!
@@matthewbarnes7075 🇺🇸 The truck is still impressive & I hope that you are able to purchase this rig if you so choose to do so. The frame appeared to be aluminum, but still in rather good shape. As long as they don’t want too much $$$ for it, I believe the truck is worth saving. A good piece of trucking history. 🥰😎✌️
@@matthewbarnes7075 I'm interested in the truck as well as the cattle trailer
That’s very nice
What happen to the trailer!
Wind blew it over in a storm years ago, I guess it wasn’t worth the hassle of flipping back over
@@matthewbarnes7075 oh ok
Nice video 👍
I belive that's a Spicer transmission. My dad had one when I was young in a cabover international
Awesome video, but how could we contact you?
👍👍👍
Very good
Os that an air shift brownie axillary trans?
I couldn’t tell you. I know you’ve got 4 speeds and reverse on the shifter, then air selected 4 ranges
how much cash buy.
Its newer than that, look at the grab handles and the lower door handles.
Dont think its that new. KW didnt have ladders that early
If you can work on a 6 cylinder chevrolet engine you can work on a Cummings really simple
is it for sale
hi is it for sale
Ok. Stop torturing the starter. You need a new source of fuel. Then most importantly you must prime the fuel pump. There is a hex plug on the top of pump body near where the fuel solenoid is. If you don’t know where that is, then stop what your doing and do some research. Fill the pump
body with fuel with a small funnel. A gas line filter cut in half fits well. Put the plug back it and try again. If still no luck, if the pump has a mechanical tach drive in the mounting flange where the pump bolts up to the back of the air compressor, remove the drive cable from the pump,
and watch to see if the drive is rotating when the engine is cranked over. If the drive isn’t rotating, chances are the fuel pump drive coupling woodruff key is sheared off the pump drive shaft. Ie the internals of the pump are seized up. Remove the pump and repair or replace the pump with a matching code pump.
HOW MUCH
Sorry the drivers side fuel tank could be the original style for that timeframe.
That’s a 4x4 air shift transmission
New SUBSCRIBER here driv,ah AWESOME rig is it for sale bye chance? I'm interested in the tractor and the cattle hauler?
I’m not sure if it’s for sale or not. I wouldn’t be too sure on the hog trailer, it’s been laying over for a while! 😂
@@matthewbarnes7075 any chance you can find out ? I'd really appreciate it
The story of the torsion bars is bullshit I drove a truck in the 70s with that transmission it had perfect splits except when you move the button from 4 to 1 it would growl .I hauled cattle in the mountains nice transmission for the hill's
I drove a 1977 W900 with torsion bars and I did break one and it was just as the guy told these kids, it drops completely down on the side you break but it was solid and I drove it from Lost Hills to Valley Kenworth in Fresno, I see your 559 so you probably remember the old KW dealer in the 70's that torsion bar was great riding suspension
@@kevincarter5854 mine had stops it wouldn't drop over 2 inches not like he said it twisted the frame
@@kevincarter5854 I do remember I've lived in Tulare calif south of Fresno since 1969
@dewaynem559 oh okay yes I hauled into San Jauqin dairymans association many times, I worked for the son of Kings County Trucking, John Mancebo in Fresno witch was Center State Trucking
