- See how Mahershala Ali, two-time Oscar winner, was turned into an old man for season 3 of “True Detective.” We take a look behind the scenes with Mike Marino, the Emmy-nominated makeup designer who transformed Ali and his co-star Stephen Dorff. The artist explains how he used prosthetics and makeup to add decades to the actors’ faces.
The newest season of “True Detective” finds Mahershala Ali playing the same character - Detective Wayne Hayes - at three different ages. His performance is incredibly believable, and was made possible by the realistic aging FX, which turned him into a convincing 75-year old man.
We visited Marino at his studio, Prosthetics Renaissance - also known as ProRen FX. They’ve worked on a long list of Hollywood films, including “Black Swan,” “Wolf of Wall Street,” and “Birdman.” ProRen is also the team behind Heidi Klum’s famous Halloween costumes.

This makeup artist (and I mean artist) deserves a huge amount of credit for the success of the show. The makeup could have very easily taken viewers out of the experience if not done very, very well but luckily it was. If there is an Emmy award for makeup Mike Marino is the obvious choice.
Side note: speaking of less appreciated aspects of this amazing season, I think credit needs to be given to whoever scored the show. The music set the atmosphere of tension, uneasiness and mystery very well. When it comes to shows that are "scary", music and sound always get to me much more than visuals. All around awesome season!

My grandfather passed a few months back and had Alzheimer’s. Ali’s performance was uncanny as an old man with dementia. His voice, skin, and walking were spot on. I had to send clips to my cousin and she was just as blown away.

Its true. When they came out with the Alien movie "Prometheus", there was something very strange about how they aged the old man in that movie. He just looked really fake and strange a lot of the time. This guy though, my gawd, you can't even tell.

It is one of the best -if not the best- use of age related prosthetics I have ever seen in movies or tv. Truly mesmerizing, the make up artist never overdid it, he kept very “natural”. On Stephen Dorff you could actually tell it wasn’t that perfect but on Mahershala it was incredible.

I Know this is a role for a show. I get it. I dnt know why,but I got so emotional, when he turned into an old man. Seeing that progression, seeing him like that. Had me in tears. Like,when they showed him as an older man, walking out into the street, he looked so lost and hurt. Jst seeing that made feel him even more as an actor. The prostectics people on this film, need awards this was phenomenal!👍

It is no easy to keep every detail in good form.
Best aging makeup I have ever seen! I wondered at first, wow where did they get different actors that looked and sounded so similar, and then I realized wow holy crap these are the same actors. Now that I am watching the season, I am looking for any discernable bits of makeup and I just cant see any. They just look like old men. Incredible! This guy deserves an Emmy or a Golden Globe or Oscar, whatever it is they give out for this! Hands down, best I have ever seen!

The amazing thing was not only was it convincing but that every episode, it jumps between the 3 timelines and each age difference is so convincing!

This season was second to the first but still an amazing feat in how deep actors can go with the right team of artists, Marino should def be getting some awards for his work.
The makeup was absolutely phenomenal, and easily the most realistic looking work done in a film or show. It’s especially impressive given the 8 episode, 8 plus hour total season runtime, and the HD closeups which take place during all times of the day, where bad make up, heat, and poor lighting could easily reveal makeup faults.
The only only thing is, Mahershala Ali is 47 and I don’t think he would age to the extent they showed in True Detective, especially given that they mentioned in the show that he’s supposed to be 70 in those scenes. My background is mixed, and my Grandpa on my Dad’s side, prior to passing away, when he was 72, had no wrinkles at all, even though he lived a stressful life. It’s the same for my Dad and my Grandma on my Mom’s side. I’d say that True Detective should’ve said Mahershala Ali was 80, that has nothing to do with the makeup though, but more so the script, which mentioned his age.

its actually 4 timelines.. there is a short 1999 or something period as well.. though its shown for very short few scenes but as convincing and detailed as other three.
