  • Animation of wave propagation during a magnitude-7.8 earthquake rupturing the San Andreas Fault from northeast to southwest. Red-blue colors reflect the intensity of shaking; green colors indicate areas of permanent ground deformation.
Simulation by Daniel Roten, Kim Olsen, and Steven Day at the Department of Geological Sciences at San Diego State University, and Yifeng Cui at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. Visualization by Daniel Roten (SDSU). Simulation on OLCF Titan.

Honestly, Santa Monica and the Westside looks to get hit much worse than the SF Valley where I live. And Palm Springs? Forget it. I don't understand why people live in Palm Springs. It's a mercilessly hot hell hole. not to mention sitting right on the fault. Hey, we were only a couple miles away from the epicenter in the 1994 Northridge quake. I don't think it's gonna get much worse than that! What's amazing is the Andreas quake takes more than a minute to reach the city of LA. That's a very long time. Oxnard and Ventura also seem to take a significant seismic hit.

We live in Los Angeles, so a 7.8 IS FRIGHTENING ENOUGH!
IF I’m this simulation video the 7.8 can be shown how far it travels, I just wish it would also give the estimate magnitude each area would get hit with.

Anthony 1311 I think that San Andreas movie was good but bullshit at the same time. I'm referring to the news media around 20 years ago... Also I had a book once that stated that the 1857 fort tejoin quake was an 8.5 but you look at Wikipedia today it states 7.9. My question is, with all the Hollywood properganda and fake news aside, what's with the downgrade in magnitude? I was brought up to believe that an 8.5 quake was possible on the San Andreas and not the 9 plus that you may have seen in the movie or Japan or Chile.

Anthony 1311, (๑•̆૩•̆) maybe they updated models because USGS says anything above 8.3 is unlikely, not incapable, so maybe Davis's 8.5M is an outlier within the realm of rare possibility.

Actually its likely Modern LA will surivive the brunt of the Earthquake although its likely anything built around late 50s and before likely won't survive the quake.
What LA needs to worry about is the fault underneath the city. The Puente Hills. if that fault wakes up during the big one then yeah LA is screwed.
