    I loved that The sims 3 introduced elevators and high rise/penthouses etc, but I think TS2 wins for me solely because it allowed for shared spaces, you could visit your neighbors (and without loading screens) and the system just seemed really thought out.

    Even though the For Rent pack is all about apartments, I think it does this pretty badly. At first I thought multifamily lots would make the game more lively, but it didn't. Because 2 or 3 sims go into shared areas and I think the whole point of this pack is shared areas. They do not interact with any objects other than base game objects and do not have autonomy cross pack compability. You have to wait for the loading screen when going to your neighbor, and when you become a landlord, it is very annoying to constantly wait for the loading screen because you have to go to the sims' apartments. Even though Apartment Life was released in 2008, the pack don't have a loading screen to go to your neighbor, and with the current technology in 2023, a much better solution could definitely be found than loading screens, but it seems that it was easier to take the apartment system in City Living as it is and add it to for rent. There is also a social status system in the Sims 2 and your neighbors can change accordingly, but there is no such thing in the Sims 4. In Sims 3, apartments are actually normal lots and only have apartment shell set dressings. However, since it was an open world game and Late Night was a very large pack, I didn't mind it at the time. Bridgeport is a city that looks very beautiful, especially at night. San Myshuno is a very cardboard city. And although I think the Sims 4 has better graphics in interior areas, I think it lags behind the Sims 3 in terms of environmental design and environmental graphics.

    • @TheRedPlumbob

      Yes, as much as I love Sims 2, Sims 3 Bridgeport felt like NYC and with an open world, it's an amazing space to live and work with no loading screens. I love watching my Sim travel and if a firefighter, drive around the City fighting fires. In Sims 2, it may not be an open world like 3, but you still interact with others in the hallways and common areas with no loading screens like a true "apartment life", IRL. Sims 4 breaks immersion constantly.

    I actually like how Sims 2 landlords differ from Sims 4 landlords (not property owners). The sims 2 one does stuff like fixing, but also lends a community aspect such as organizing the get together for tenants - however they're also aggressive at chasing you for rent. meanwhile the sims 4 one is purely utilitarian (fixing stuff mostly, no community aspect) but is passive aggressive / throws shade at you for not paying rent. Couple of things for Sims 2: 1) You can also use the computer to find a roommate. 2) If there is a grill on the apartment lot, the landlord could grill for the weekend party. Also, the babysitting requests (to apartment neighbors) can be made if you just want to go out on the town, while at work or even a full vacation (they can even be asked to pet sit too). As of yet, no other mainline sims has this feature. In addition, Sims 2 apartments can be as minimal as trailer parks and flop houses (University), or as luxurious as Townhouses and high-rises with penthouse apartments. Plus, the cross pack compatibility just enhances all of this, as you could build luxurious hotels in all your neighborhoods (Bon Voyage), Rental Row Houses, Lobby Restaurants and Clothing Stores (Night Life and OFB), and can place bowling alleys (NL), ice/roller rinks (Seasons), DJ Booths (NL/FT), photo booths (NL), etc. all in common areas. For a nearly 20 year old game, to simply state that versatility of Sims 2 surpasses all the mainline Sims games is an understatement. With mods and CC, Sims 2 looks better than Sims 4, is more optimized than Sims 3 and can replicate either of them on every front. The Sims was the most groundbreaking game, and Sims 2 enhanced nearly every aspect. Sims 2 has the best gameplay, animations, physics, details, cutscenes (the only one of the mainline Sims games to have them), personalities, Lore, event scenarios, and the list goes on... Now that competition is around the corner, Sims 4 is still not making enough of an effort to win back its Sim Veterans; it has long lost its title of "Life Simulator," but rather has further cemented its footing as just an overpriced "DLC Simulator" (Even to have all the features that apartment living has to offer, you need at least 3 of the packs, plus more if you want the features added in with Sims 2 Apartment Life or Sims 3 Late Night).
    And to end on a better note, it is great to hear your voice, after watching your content for so long, thank you for sharing your voice, it is very nice and calming❣

    Despite the loading screens in Sims 4, I have to say I've really been enjoying the open ended flexibility of the rental system in For Rent. I very much enjoy how rental units can be anything, be it apartments, town houses, a room for rent and so on. I've always been a fan of lot traits and challenges for the added dynamics and household maintenance gameplay they introduce, as well as expand the types of environments your sims can live in be it gross and run down to more high end and luxurious. I also have to say in combination with features like clubs, NAPs and eco footprints, the sense of an active community really comes to life in a way that brings me so much joy.

    Great overview as always. Though some corrections I have to make:
    Roommates come from The Sims 3 University Life and The Sims 4 Discover University. I could almost say that The Sims 2 is the only game where apartments and roommates come from the same pack, but there is one thing you forgot to mention: The Sims 3 University Life also brings apartment lot type to the game (though the only way to see it is by changing lot type in Edit World mode). Though these are more of dorms in home world... The Sims 4 roommates seem to move out randomly, but when they do, you have some time to convince them if your sim has some Research & Debate skill. Plus roommates have unique quirks: some leave notes, some bring food, some may even upgrade your objects.
    The Sims 2 also have bills and rent separate. Missing rent for 3 days causes it to be added to the bills. Missing bills causes the repo-man to arrive. The Sims 4 For Rent has another thing that can happen (especially if they have broken unit rules or missed rent before): eviction. Should this happen, your sim is given time to pack up their things. During that time, sims can convince property owner to give them a second chance. But after the event, you'll be taken to Manage Worlds where you'll have to pick a new home for your sims. You can move them back into the unit they were evicted from however.
    Oh, and grace period thing in TS4 For Rent: after set amount of days (usually 7), your sims go into a Grace Period. For tenants, it means that they can move out without needing to pay extra. For property owners, it means that they can change the rent without any consequences.
    And also, landlords in City Living have more gameplay when your sim lives in an apartment with Needs TLC trait: broken pipes, electrical box, mice, insect infestation, and weird odor also allows you to call landlord over. In addition to rent, low relationship can also prevent the landlord from coming.
    Plus with City Living, traits neighbors have can also affect how they act. For example, Goofball and Erratic sims may barge in uninvited from time to time, Romantic sims may come over to take a shower, sims who hates children may complain about noise if there are children playing etc.
    One interesting thing to also mention is how it is to build an apartment from scratch. My overview here is so:
    The Sims 2: Start from Residential lot, use Unique Separator door (make sure that the side with mat is located outside the unit). Then make sure that every room accessible from the door is fully walled off with walls and fences. After you are done, open the cheat console with Control+Shift+C and type in 'changelotzoning apartmentbase' there. If a notification pops up, revert it back to residential and make changes. Otherwise, you got your own custom apartment!
    The Sims 3: Choose a Residential type lot (Residential or University Life's apartment). You need to enter these cheats: 'testingcheatsenabled true', 'buydebug on', and 'restrictbuildbuyinbuildings off'. You mostly need to use markers from debug category: with 'Public room marker' you mark common areas you can't build in (outdoors don't need one as it is automatically restricted), with 'Hidden room marker' you mark other sims' units (plus control-shift-clicking on the marker also allows you to set the ambiance sound), and doors between hidden rooms and public rooms can be marked as an NPC door with control-shift-clicking on it and choosing the interaction to make it so (it'll house 1 townie).
    The Sims 4: With For Rent, simply use the tools Residential Rental lot type provides: mark units by clicking on rooms, set the lot traits for each unit from lot info panel etc. If you want to make more than 6 units, you can use this cheat: 'increaserentalunitcap on'. Though do remember that one save file can have only up to 100 units. When a sim owns the lot, you can set the rent, lease length, and unit rules.

    Apartments really suck in the Sims 3 mostly because you cannot choose what apartment your sims will move in and you cannot visit your neighbours within the apartment. If the Sims 4 didn’t have the loading screens when visiting neighbours apartments on the same lot and have functional elevators like it’s predecessors then the Sims 4 would’ve won as the Sims 4 really did good at everything else. The Sims 2 really wins this round as you can visit neighbours apartments without loading screens and you can choose your apartment unlike sims 3 even though you can choose your apartments in the sims 4 too.

    The apartments in The Sims 3 shows up the main issue of Late Night: if offers a lot of things, but not all of them are well executed in the way they should, so in The Sims 4 you have more gameplay for these things but there's the unfortunate need to pay too much more for that as the features were released in different packs

    • @barbiquearea
      @barbiquearea Год назад +4

      I agree. Late Night had a lot of potential for apartment gameplay. If only the devs filled out all the penthouses with additional apartments instead of leaving like 60% of the entire first floor as dead space. That way they could have given you the potential to have roommates or tenants in a future pack, such as University Life.

    • @TheEtherny
      @TheEtherny 11 месяцев назад +2

      I remember the hype going around late night but people started resenting how empty lots were and how slow it ran. Sims 3 is full of good ideas with bad executions, Sims 4 is full of safe ideas that end up being broken, so I'll take Sims 3 approach any day

    I love Sims 3, have never played Sims 2, and tried to like Sims 4. Of the three, it's clear that Sims 2 is superior, more detailed and functional than either of the other two, which is weird because it's the oldest one, and you'd think the others would be at least as good if not better. I've watched others try and play Sims 4 apartments and they are broken. At least the latest pack is.

    The Sims 3 has two apartment systems:
    - One was introduced with Late Night and functions like you described.
    - The second apartment system (which you can access by changing the lot type from residential to apartment) was introduced with University Life. It allows you to live wherever you want and share the apartment with roommates (you can use the lock door function to limit the spaces they can access). All your roommates are NPCs and the number you get depends on how big your household is.

      It may take some work, but its possible to turn the other spaces in the penthouses into somewhat functional apartments with your sims household acting as landlords. You just have to use cheats to unrestrict build/buy mode and then turn the extra space on your floor into livable apartments like your one, while also keeping the markers that obscures them (which is optional) and use the real estate option from University Life to bring in some roommates and get them to live in the newly furnished rooms.
