Although I already know a lot what is gonna happen in these Sengoku Jidai series of videos, I'm still watching these at the edge of my seat :D Very well done!
This must be the only case in which I can actually be happy of my historical ignorance regarding japan. I've no idea what's going to happen, so this is some great entertainment.
The complex systems that were in place in Japan at the same time as the medieval ages in Europe, never ceases to impress me. There are so many similarities in the cultures, and also so many things that are more complex and impressive in the Japanese culture. It's just so fascinating
FYI, the name of "Owari" province actually have same meaning as "the end" Imagine Oda's generals start making this pun after knowing the Imagawa are coming for them.
loading is fixed in the new versions, except when you start a new game, but loading save files is fast. Another thing that every in-game day morning there is a 3-5 sec freeze, because the clans decide every stuff in the morning [like politics and trade] but its not a big deal.
It's said that Nobuhide, the father of Nobunaga, was the only person who realize Nobunaga. So on his funeral, Nobunaga not only threw incense at the memorial tablet, but also cried: "Why do you died so fast!?" That was Nobunaga's way to expressing his sadness.
And Yes, at the time 0:01 the Gifu Castle was names "Inabayama Castle"(稲葉山城)under the reign of Saitoh Clan. "Gifu"(岐阜) was the new name Nobunaga give to the Castle, originate from Chinese history that the founder of the Zhou Dynasty, Ji Fa, came from the Mountains of Qi(岐山"Qi-Shan", pronounced "Gizan" in Japanese)and finally unified the whole China.
I've heard he was putting on a show, acting the fool to both convince his external enemies he wasn't a threat and trick his internal enemies into overplaying their hands.
“The inevitable clash between 2 ambitious lords, that changed the course of Japanese history”. In EUIV, every Lord in Japan screwed your plans for domination by being so ambitious to kick one another... Looking at you, Hosokowa.
Absolutely adore your videos! Always very detailed, well informed and highly entertaining. If history lessons were taught this way I have no doubt the world would be filled with history fanatics. Thank you for the video!!!
give warhammer a try, i didn't play it for a year after it came out cause i was pissed it was a non-historical one, but now i love it and i can't even go back to the historical ones. Save Shogun 2 ofc.
Amazing channel!! thank you so much for this, I live in Japan where history like this is rarely told to the younger generation. Not that I am old but Japan was a bloody ruthless state before it became what it is today. Please keep them coming, lots of battles happened before the Meiji restoration and unification of Japan, one of the key politicians of that unification has a burial in my ward.
Again, a smaller but more experienced force won the battle. Took me some time but I finally subscribed to your channel, thus creating a triple alliance of you, History Time and Kings and Generals.
Finally a video from Baz! This is the absolute best channel on youtube, and your voice fits these types of videos perfectly! The David Attenborough of historic battles :)
Weird, I heard different course of the battle. Nobunaga did leave some personel at Zensho-ji with banners and pretend to be the main force to confuse and prevent Narumi garrison from attacking. And one record suggest that these Narumi garrison did not even know the real force of Oda manages to slip-by towards Imagawa's camp. Also, Oda didn't encounter vanguard of Imagawa. They completely achieve surprise maneuver and continue towards Imagawa's camp via rugged passage that - according to legend - Nobunaga knows very well. He even stop by at local shrine to pray (this one I read from a novel tho) The only battle for Oda's main forces is when they storming Imagawa's main camp, with Imagawa confuses the commotion to that of camp brawl - as they were celebrating for their success at Dengakuhazama. Some of Imagawa forces did flee the battle in panic and confusion, and Imagawa was slain in the camp not long after. Not to criticize in any way, just found it confusing which one is true lol
Me too wtf is going on here. I played that battle in shogun 2, there was total surprise and imagava died in his tent unprepared. Even shogun 2 wiki says same.
+Tjalling Appelhof And what? It would be quite strange if total war game and wikipedia were wrong at same time. Tell me how am i supposed to know which story is true?
Robert Kalinič Baz Battles source for this video is the Shinchokoki(Chronicles of Oda Nobunaga),a book that was written by a retainer of Nobunaga.Even japanese history students are reading this book for their researches,i would say its the most reliable source.
Wow, I never knew of this version! I thought that the Oda creeped their way to yoshimoto's main camp and attacked them while celebrating and that yoshimoto was killed even before he realized that they were being attacked. I also thought that Nobunaga simply told the war council that he was going to sleep before he attacked the following day.
I find it awesome that you are using Shogun 2 Main theme. lol I hope you keep going on feudal Japan. I have always been a huge fan of this specific time of their history. You delve deeper then I was ever able to find out about. Keep up the great work, and will wait patiently for the future videos. :)
I thought this battle was the one where Nobunaga marched in the night in the rain and charged down a hill toward the imigawa forces. Where the imigawa forces were drinking and not paying much attention and that's where yoshimoto died. Nobunaga got a surprise on them and they didn't have enough time to truly make a defense. Not following a imigawa force and have them warn their clan leader.
I highly recommend the Battle of Shiting, from the Three Kingdoms period of China. And yes, that’s the actual name, suffering from the consequences of romanisation.
The Battle of Red Cliff is a battle that crippled Cao Cao's ambitions and the unlikely alliance of Liu Bei and Sun Quan pummeled him to a pulp. Also, Zhuge Liang managed to call forth the wind to change in order for Zhou Yu's forces to unleash fire upon Cao Cao's ships and Huang Gai have to be beaten up just for the whole scheme to work
Please do the Battle of Towton. It was one of the biggest battles of the medevil ages and the largest of the War of the Roses. A series on the Wars of the Roses would be even more incredible. Attempt #11
baz, i love your battles. you have a nice calm settling voice which invites the listener/ viewer and i also considerably like the way you structure or design or whatever material your use in your videos, it looks GREAT !
Very interesting video! Quick tip on Japanese pronounciation: there is no stress in the Japanese language, try saying "i-ma-ga-wa" (sort of like a robot) in stead of "i-MA-ga-wa".
Remind me with an old game called Nobunaga Ambition iron triangle in PS2... the game that thought me about battle Okehazama... long before shogun 2 total war.. Great video.. great channel... auto subscribe
There are several points I'd like to make: -Matsudaira Motoyasu's campaign to supply Odaka castle was a task give from Imagawa after imagawa started the campaign toward Kyoto, and Nobunaga failed to stop the supply because Imagawa forces already stormed several forts loyal to Oda. It's believed that Imagawa ordered those who surrendered to him previously to fight anyone along his route to Kyoto, and Matsudaira was considered as a vassal back then therefore he was ordered to complete dangerous task as resupply front line. When Imagawa reached Owari his forces was already 40000 because many on his route surrendered and joined his forces. It was also the reason why Oda didn't surrender because he knows his clan would be the next vanguard against much stronger enemies around Kyoto. -The more popular belief is that Nobunaga sang a segment of Atsumori and rallied his own guards and rode out the castle before his vassals can react, and finally caught up with him in a temple before they joined a force of 3000+ men. There was no sources showing he gave speech to his men before he left his castle, but some saying believed he ordered men to stay behind and burn the castle when the news of his death reached them. -Imagawa forces were caught off-guarded because of over-confidence and heavy rain or hail. Nobunaga believed Imagawa forces were attacking two forts at the same time and should be exhausted, therefore he decided to attack Imagawa main camp upfront. According to Shinchō kōki Imagawa forces suffered from the heavy rain or hail and found Oda forces right in front of them after it stops. It contradicts the saying that Nobunaga fought with Imagawa's vanguard cause it takes away all surprise factor in the attack and makes no sense while the remnants of the vanguards were able to reach back the camp. These may not be correct, if possible I'd like to see the sources used in this video when the details are contradicting to other evidences.
I hate to be that guy (yet here I am posting), but on the starting map, Gifu wasn't known as Gifu until Nobunaga took it years after this battle. It's also unavoidable, but I think Googling the pronunciation of place names and famous people will help in the future. It's a minor foible though. I love the channel and, as I live in Japan now, I'm especially loving this series on the Sengoku Jidai! Keep up the good work!

Interesting. Good to know
Yeah Japanese don't have an emphasis (I think that's the word), I heard.
For Europeans, it is quite hard to talk without having an emphasis on one syllable
The pronunceation in the video is even worse than that, it sounds more like iMagua, maybe they are thinking of the character from Last of the Mohicans
