      I'm proud of my Spanish Galician heritage. Today I'm Christian and speak Castilian aka Spanish instead of Arabic praying to Allah 20 times a day thanks to Visigothic Nobleman Don Pelayo. Valiant warrior King of the North. King of Asturias. Crowned KIng by the loyal men who fought alongside him. Seeder of the Reconquista. And their descendants who continued forming small Christian Kingdoms in the North, fighting and resisting for 700 years. Generation to generation (instead of running away into France) slowly expanding until the whole of Iberia was free of the peaceful messengers of islam in 1492 AD when the remaining Christian Kingdoms united to become Spain. Asturias deserve all the recognition, for without them our present culture would not exist. Pelagius is barely mentioned in our history books, less than a paragraph, and it is a shame. So a big shout to this channel for its work.

    • @alfgui3295
      @alfgui3295 6 лет назад +134

      Nope, muslim chronicles say that Julian after being humiliated by Roderic joined forces with Muza, enabling the muslim invasion. What happened after that is explained in the video, Tariq led a small berber force which surprisingly destroyed Roderic forces in the first battle and since he didn't find any strong opposition he took the visigoth capital of Toledo, which thanks to its geographical situation was the key of controlling Spain, and once Muza arrived with reinforcements it was over.
      Visigoths were a very fractioned force, too many parties plotting against each other. So once the ruling party fell, they were doomed.

    • @Trikipum
      @Trikipum 5 лет назад +102

      Visigoths, if you read the cronicles, the roman ones, were super peaceful people for what the germanics used to be. Mostly peasants and sheppers. If you read about them, you learn they were bouncing around for centuries because they really didnt have fighting spirit. Later on, with the romans, they had to harden up, yet they took so much abuse from romans, for centuries they were used like cattle. And yet, all tehy wanted to be was part of the roman empire. The romans never accepted them, betrayed them 1 thousand times.. until they had enough and the shit blew the fan. I guess they just went back to their original culture when they felt confortable in hispania. :).

      You have no idea. Phenotype and genotype are diferent things.. Greek and spanish ended up looking "similar" just because both countries are around the same lattitude. Spain is mostly celt, if you look for dna maps, the spanish, french, british, portuguese and northen italians are the most related, then you start to get germanic dna past france, in big quantities. To the contrary of what the english has been saying, the original population of britain wasnt really removed. All these countries are basically of celt blood while east europe is germanic and slavic. In spain, You will find all kinds of "shades" all over spain, the "south" isnt any "darker", not really, it just happens they get more sun, so they get nice sunbaths. You should visit spain in winter, almost everyone looks like a ghost, paper white. Then the summer arrives and the ones who can afford the beach, get a tan. But this is not really that special from spanish people, even people from sweeden and norway tan, i have seen some of those, in spain, darker than moroccans hah.

    • @cosmopolitanbay9508
      @cosmopolitanbay9508 6 лет назад

      This makes no difference though. What you say is just natural. Conquerers occupy the main administrative centres and exert their power onto the provinces. But in the course of 700 years there was a constant flow of Arab soldiers, merchants, scientists, artists and scholars to Al Andalus, which inevitably changed the whole culture.

    • @cosmopolitanbay9508
      @cosmopolitanbay9508 6 лет назад

      I know this is a touchy topic for Spaniards, but I would have to disagree. Asturias and Leon did the Reconquista centuries later. Genetics prove otherwise too, so does Spanish language and more like 2000-3000 fenomenal monuments, culture, cuisine and what have you. Muslims would marry several women and they were not brought in from Saudi Arabia ... Have seen enough Northerners that look like Moors. It is one of those national myths that makes no sense nor is supported by the facts.

    • @cosmopolitanbay9508
      @cosmopolitanbay9508 6 лет назад

      As a historian you should know other historians that take the opposite stance. I have seen documentaries examining old historical records arguing the opposite of what you say. To claim that after 700 years of Arab rule there is not a drop of Arab blood in Spanish genes is absurd and delusioanal. And yes, I know enough Moroccans, both Berbers, mixed and very white Arabs. But I also know plenty of Spaniards from all parts of Spain. Some are very white, others so dark and with such facial features that everyone in North Africa would mistake them for locals. What you say about the North-South divide in Al-Andalus may be true, but it seems exaggerated to the extent that you guys create a national myth of ethnic and racial purity. You can go as far back as the Romans, Carthaginians, Greeks and Phoenicians. They still made the link btw Spain and North Africa Middle East before the Arabs... Here's a better argument: Muslim invasion of Spain was actually dominated by Vandals from North Africa who converted to Islam, but were still white caucasoids and hence, they left a genetic marker, but it still the same as their Visigothic cousins ... LOL

    • @cosmopolitanbay9508

    • @goranperssonfanaccount1956
      @goranperssonfanaccount1956 6 лет назад +15

      Flying Berserker covadonga wasn't significant for the rest of europe.
      At Tours, the caliphate was already way overstreched and their tide of conquest had already slowed down significantly.
      At vienna, it could be argued that the Ottomans were already doomed to decline, and the shock of vienna being taken would cause larger parts of europe to form a coalition.
      And it is quite obvious that you have an historical bias. There is a reason all conquests eventually grind to a halt
      But if you want to look at a time where europe quite possibly was "saved"
      it was after the mongol crushing of polish and hungarian armies in 1242, when Great Khan Ögedai died and the mongols went back into the steppe.
      Same thing might have saved the muslims a year after the siege of Baghdad (1258), when Khan Möngke died and the same thing happened.
