The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by
With bright knives he releaseth my soul
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication

    Lo, we shall rise up

I saw Pink Floyd at Angels Stadium in Anaheim in 1977 on this tour. Incredible show... They opened the show with Sheep over a period of 15 minutes or so. You'd hear the odd barnyard animal sound here and there from one speaker or another... Gradually they became more frequent until the song just came on all at once.
What a hell of a show...

This is my favorite song on the album. I love how clearly Pink Floyd is able to convey images in their music. I can see and hear blades slicing and chopping every time Gilmour hits us with that guitar. In Shine On You Crazy Diamond it sounds to me like what light shining through a diamond might sound like. I know that sounds weird but there's this twinkling, sometimes surging sound. Anyway, they're very good at that and I love it.

The air is blue with smoke and you never want it to end. But it does and you don't remember how you get to the street but your feet arn't touching the ground. I saw The Beatles, Jethro Tull, The Stones, Paul Simon's Graceland and Wings at the Gardens but Pink Floyd stands out on top.

I remember standing in line at the record store with my scant $$ to buy this album the day it came out... I said I'd post this comment so... Here's a deeper analysis than I think you will usually see on this. First, let's get something non-musical out of the way... In the context of the album's cast of human animality, we are all some degree of amalgamation combining the three animals... On to the compositional subtlety and genius of the music itself...
SHEEP: Everyone hears the grim tether of fate return as the 'drowning stone' motif from Dogs reappears in Sheep. But this is more than it appears. They drop the stone motif into the musical palette of Sheep where it ripples into an echo - referencing that earlier work from Meddle, and depicting that the fate of the sheep is tied to and echoes the fate of the dogs. Even further, the chaotic crash and fade at the end of each verse where the voice fades into synth is an adaptation of the motif that first appears in the later section of Saucerful of Secrets where there is a series of buildups - albeit instrumental - that end in chaotic crashes. This voice-to-synth fade also depicts the non-cogent "dimly aware" wordless state of sheeply animality where thoughts form no words and mute to null. This chaotic crash idea also occurs instrumentally in "On The Run" from DSOTM. The BASS rhythm comes from One of These Days. Also, although everyone hears the return of the Stone motif, almost no one hears the RETURN of the 'dog-whistle' from the instrumental section of Dogs It is not conjectured to say that the "Here Boy" motif is pivotal when it reappears (reworked before the recitation of the psalm) in the descending diminished chord two-note guitar riff. The point? Dog whistles are covert coercion by the oppressors and are not meant to be heard overtly. [How apropos] These are a few examples of the masterful simplicity and elegance of Pink Floyd's compositional techniques. They are unrivaled in the cohesion of their work.
The dogs are fooled by the dog whistle of the pigs, the pigs are fooled by their power, and the sheep are fooled by false prophets promising to save them. In response to what you said... Now is harder than before. What your gen faces in this day is more. Stay aware and try not to lose your way. Many boomers have.

Yes, I agree it feels like the musically most cohesive song on the album. Not to put down the others, but "Dogs" while it has many great stretches, often felt like as a whole it's sort of "less powerful than the sum of its parts" - and Pigs can feel a bit overlong. Sheep has more sustained energy from start to finish, and also I really like those loud, screeching guitar runs. all the reverb on the rack - it sounds really BIG, like a true stadium rock anthem. Like many people I feel the outro should have lasted longer! :)

Worth the wait from the threatening intro to the triumphal guitars when the sheep rise up at the end. I love the story-telling same as many Genesis tracks.

Only on the 8-track tape was Pigs On The Wing parts 1&2 combined into one song with a guitar solo in the middle.

You're correct, the line you heard IS from "Dogs", it starts off as the word "Stone" while fading into the middle section of "Dogs". Another line from "Dogs" is "Dragged Down By The Stone",... also, In "Pigs" part 2 at the end of the album the lyric is,...So I Don't Feel Alone On The Weight Of The Stone",.....
The word "Stone" is meant to represent Life,... human existence. The weight of Life, being dragged down by Life itself.
Great ride, one of my fav Floyd albums!

It is so (relatively) quiet but the line in the background "Lo we shall rise up, And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water." is a favourite of mine. Keep Reacting. & Philosophising too.

Pink Floyd had a quadraphonic sound system for The Animals tour. David's soaring guitar riff at the end of Sheep was blasting out of the speakers behind the audience to great effect.

That riff you wondered about was later used in Hey You in The Wall. Methinks Supertramp borrowed some keyboard runs from Sheep. Who better to borrow from than Pink Floyd?

I love this album. Actually this one and "Meddle" are my favorite Floyd LPs (can't pick one over the other) Although I do like some of the later albums, for me, this is the last truly classic Pink Floyd album. "The Wall" is fine but it signalled a big change in the band overall. Great video as always. Enjoy.

This is music to sit with friends in a dark room with a smoke, really where it's at man, nectar for the soul indeed. Yep, Richard was one of a kind, irreplaceable, supreme, and a glue for the other genius guys, sorely missed. Respect your comments man, you have a deep understanding 🇬🇧🤝🇺🇸✌️

Simple. THE BEST Pink Floyd album..and 1977's best too.. closely followed by YES with Going for the one. Both are awesome and should be on the school curriculum maybe. Rock music doesn't get much better than this. Love to you Lee. 😍

“this is the most hopeful of the entire album” nailed it. Roger was not in a happy space writing this album. Just when you thought Floyd hit the darkest, angry and depressing they could go you need to listen to The Final Cut, It’s basically Roger’s album but it’s next level in darkness

Yeah, tripped to this many times right after release. If you're interested is some other older musical styles, you've likely heard of SWEET - the Ballroom Blitz band. Try 'Set Me Free' from the same album. I still find it hard to believe they were a 70's band - so far ahead of the curve.
