Agree. Some think it's "trash". Remarkable. I'm sure I'm not the first with the fly in Grantchester Meadows causing my cat to chase the sounds around the room, then terrified by the stomping down the stairs (this actually mimicked perfectly the steps down the basement where this occurred!), then be confused by the swatting, then horrified by the final "swat!"+tweeting at the end :) A wonderful experience from my youth! Only wish I could've recorded it for posterity 😂

Ummagumma….yes I was a similar age when I bought it, and listened to it throughout the summer. It gets some bad press from critics, but the live album is really good…”Astronomy Domine’, and “Careful with that Axe Eugene”…and “Grandchester Meadows” just epitomises summer…cool acoustic, running water, and the swam taking off…..oh the memories of youth, lying back in the sun, toking and listening to music

This whole concert was/is a masterpiece of music, visuals and atmosphere, it's hands down my favourite live performance by Pink Floyd or any other band come to that. This is who Pink Floyd were, and it's this sound that i fell in love with when i was about fourteen in 1978, and i still love listening to it after the best part of fifty years, check out 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' Nick Mason's drum work is second to none, you'll love it.👌✌

You hear that crazed Roger scream briefly in the transition between "the happiest Days of our lives" and "another brick on the Wall part 2" off The Wall album.
It is iconic. Roger not only brought the lyrics, he brought that creepy and spooky element to the band as well. 👻

It didn't make it on either of the soundtrack cds that i have. Heart Beat, Pig Meat (misspelled as Heat Meat on one), Crumbling Land, Come in Number 51, Your Time is Up are on the single. The double add Country Song, Unknown Song, and Love Scene-Version 6 and Love Scene -Version 4
Edit to add, reading the booklet in the double, Number 51 was a remake of Careful with that axe

Meddle is a great choice, Obscured by Clouds is one of my favourite albums. Not just Floyd, but overall.
I'm old, I've been listening to them since getting The Wall on vinyl for my birthday. About four months after it was released. Collected all their albums I could find on vinyl (it was pretty challenging back in the day), then got all of them on cassette, then again on CD... the only band I've replaced the discography again and again.
I like seeing you young guys appreciate some of the music I grew up with. Sub added.

I bought Ummagumma on it's release and with a couple of mates drove to a big old beach house nestled in the sand dunes. We started to play the album on a sound system wherethe speakers were the size of fridges, we smoked a couple joints and were listening in the dark when the scream came we all ran to each other and hugged each other in terror. Awesome experience!

Great reaction as always Lee. And welcome to Uma! An album so far ahead of its time, we’re still waiting for it. However, for your next album foray, I would go with Meddle. Probably the first album where their pop sensibilities merged with their trademark prog sound. There’s a lot more going on there than Echoes, the studio cut of which is also worth a listen. Happy Spring all!

Great reaction Lee!! This is an amazing version. Careful With That Axe was actually a B-side to the 'single' release of Point Me At The Sky - so not on any album (until the later compilation 'Relics' and further released on 'The Early Years 1965-1972' collection, with the box set). Ummagumma is a live version on there (similar in sound to the Pompeii version)
It occurred around the same time as A Saucerful Of Secrets album though - 1968.
Such a trippy, psychedelic song! Love it. Cheers.

The original studio version of this track can be found on the 1971 compilation album, "Relics". There are tracks on here not on any other album, at least at the time of its release, including, "Julia Dream" and "Biding My Time". An album worth checking and one that never gets mentioned !. The "Ummagumma" version is great though, as is the live version of the track, " Saucerful..." on the same album. This is my preferred era of PF and your reaction mirrored my own when I and no doubt countless others first heard it. It's great stuff! 😺

Nice pair was the first LP I bought from PF. No one compared to them. They shared an incredible journey with us, and I remember eagerly looking forward to each new release to continue the journey. I'm not surprised that you are taking the journey too. You should be happy that you don't have to wait years between releases, but also kinda sad, because you lose the anticipation that we felt wondering where they would take us next.

Love your Pink Floyd reactions. This instrumental is a bedrock of early Pink Floyd live music with a long history. Careful WTAE was originally released on the B-side of the single 'Point Me at the Sky' in 1968. The song was written shortly after the departure of Syd Barret as the band sought a new direction and was originally titled Keep People Smiling, then change to 'Mudererotic Woman', then 'Muderistic Woman', before finally being called 'Careful with that Axe, Eugene'. The original recording was released on the 1971 album 'Relics'. The song was used as part of Pink Floyds earliest attempt to develop a 'concept album' during the live performances of 'The Man and The Journey' in 1969. It was re-titled 'Beset by Creatures of the Deep'. It was recorded live for the 'Ummagumma' album in early 1969. The song (in a different key) we re-recorded for the 1970 movie Zabriskie Point, and re-titled 'Come in Number 51, Your Time is Up'. Careful was a mainstay of their live performances and a fan favourite. It was often paired with 'Green is The Colour' from their 3rd album, 'More' with one song flowing beautifully into the other. It was performed up to the French Summer Tour of 1974 where it was drop half way through the tour. It was performed for the final time in Oakland USA during the 1977 In The Flesh World Tour. The song was the 9th most performed track by the group, a total of 343 times, (1 more than Comfortably Numb). I have heard many of these live performances which range from around five minutes to over 15 minutes in length. While the song has structure, there is a fair bit of improvisation taking place which makes each version unique, making searching them out a real treat!

I've always heard it pronounced as "Oooma-Goooma." An older boy that I'd played with went into the Army and was stationed in Germany. He came back home when I was about 13. He gave me the first Pink Floyd album and said "Listen to this... you'll like the keyboards!" I found "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play" to be very eye-opening!
I noticed that he had changed quite a bit while overseas...his mind had expanded, as had his taste in music.
A couple of years later he said that he'd probably spent too much time in Amsterdam.

Ummagumma but beware the Studio disc, I love the Narrow Way and Granchester Meadow but there is some real experimental stuff here and I need to be in the mood to listen to it. The Live is disc is legendary and beyond awesome, this was how I was made a Pink Floyd fan, listening to it until the grooves wore out.
I love Meddle primarily for One of These Days and Echoes, though some of the lighter stuff is very good. Flip of the coin, do one and then the other, you need to hear both. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

What I love about Pink Floyd songs like this is they're so cinematic and atmospheric. I think they influenced the music in early 1970s sexy Vampire, Monster, Suspense and Horror movies coming out of Amicus and Hammer Studios UK as well as studios in the US and Europe. There's even a 70s HK Kung Fu movie that used " One of These Days" ! An Aussie Surf movie " Crystal Voyager" 1973, was given permission by PF to use the whole of " Echoes" to end the film which is stunning and trippy. It's filled with fantastic images of waves and surfers plus a cool Oz Rock soundtrack. Look for the version whose thumbnail is a painting of the Earth with windsurfers flying over the ocean and that is 1hr 18 min long. Cheers Lee and stay well.

No one ever gives Nick Mason his due. Before The Wall, where Roger controlled every instrument Mr. Mason's drumming was so tribal, so original. Without Rick Wright and Nick Mason Pink Floyd does not achieve the heights of musical pantheon that they did - together, Roger!
(sorry, that was directed at Mr. Waters.)
I love Live At Pompeii, actually giving us the opportunity to see how four musicians, with their individual sound (and personality) styles came together to become one of the most formidable musical foursomes in the 70's.

Ummagumma was the first Pink Floyd album I heard, I think in early 1971, and it was like nothing I’d ever heard before. It’s a double: the live album, and the studio album. The live album is the main course, the studio album is an optional extra. On the studio album, the Roger Waters tracks are eccentric but OK, you could give them a listen; the other tracks are frankly not recommended.

@@Humb7757The live tracks on Ummagumma are great. My only doubt is about the screaming on Careful With That Axe, which doesn’t quite work for me; it seemed to go better at Pompeii.

@@Humb7757I’m not complaining that the song contains screaming; just saying that the performance of the screaming leaves something to be desired on the Ummagumma album.

Was always interesting to watch reactions while listening late night.lol

UMMA GUMMA - still one of my favourite albums the live versions on that are extraordinary - all the tracks except the extremely weird SEVERAL SPECIES OF FURRY ANIMALS GATHERED IN A CAVE AND GROOVING WITH A PICT … that is one of the weirdest ever and hard to love. GRANCHESTER MEADOWS is a thing of beauty. There’s also some odd Nick tracks … but sides 9ne and two of the double album were smokers paradise back in the day. The album was also a great rolling surface …

Ah, yes! Roger Waters' blood curdling Scream!
In my opinion, the best version of this song is, in fact, the live version from Ummagumma. It's a longer version, which let's them build up the ominous atmosphere even more. Then that bone chilling scream hits.
Not too many rock bands delve into horror, especially from this era, but Pink Floyd did it right and proper!

Careful with that bug Eugene. You might accidentally swat a moth into your ear canal and that happened to me. I wouldn’t recommend it. I was literally sleeping in my bed. It was like a helicopter, trying to dig its way through my brain. What was so ironic about it was, that we had a lot of moths in Colorado, and I used to kill a lot of them every day, retribution? I don’t know maybe.

This song is on "Ummagumma",... not my favorite Floyd period, no doubt they were still trying to find themselves in the late 60s. I'm much more of a post 1970 Pink Floyd fan myself, from their 1971 "Meddle" album on.
Pink Floyd post Roger Waters is also a great Floyd period, more so than their extreme psychedelic period in the late 60s in my view.
When they first came out in 1964/65, they were a Blued based band, just like virtually every other Rock & Roll band to come out of England in the 1960s.

I saw them live about this time in a fairly small town hall concert room ,The whole performance you could hardly see them, No light apart from the psychadelic bubbles at back of stage and under face light for any who stood forward, Not much sung just long session with plenty of this kind of material ,.
