The thing is Linkara is unhappy because he literally said it's because people started harassing him because of it. harassment is not criticism. If being upset at someone where a group of people went after you is not allowed I don't know what is. Are people suppose to not ever be mad? @@DTfan43 It really shows how to properly deal with online mockery. Doug has been memed from hell and back. Has been harassed and mocked for his most cringeworthy takes. Yet he takes it on the chin and either ignores it or laughs with it. So there's nothing to really get him on. Any mass mockery is quickly ended when it doesn't get a reaction. Linkara however will freak out about his old comic being brought up and used to make fun of him. He'll go on a live stream and complain that a youtuber is making fun of him. Which only amplifies the mockery because now everyone knows it bothers him. TL;DR Don't feed the trolls.
What's funny is that Doug recieves actual criticism and straight up insults from A LOT of people from both but well known reviewers and a lot of random people, yet he never really pays attention to them at all, at best he uses them as material for his show and in the case of Chris just says it is funny. Meanwhile Linkara gets called the lightbringer a couple of times and loses his mind completely....

I think people take Doug way more seriously than he takes himself. People on RUclips Will constantly make these hour long documentaries dissecting his character and psyche and call him a failure who wanted to get into Hollywood but failed and is now stuck doing RUclips for the rest of his life; when he’s really just a guy who likes making funny videos on the internet, tried going into ventures that didn’t work out, and is perfectly happy where he is.
Reading the comment section of the video "Nostalgia Critic and The Wall" by Folding Ideas, people are delving so deep into a psyche that isn't real. Everything NC says HAS to be real and his actual opinion, and he's a conservative and a republican and yada yada. It's so insane to see people take Doug so seriously when even when I was a kid i could tell he didn't take his own "opinions" very seriously and hyped certain things up for some often very crass humor. It just makes me laugh when i see people calling doug some "Bleak, uncaring little man" from some world of utter darkness and hatred when he calls something sort of whiny. Read the comment section, it'll make you laugh from how hard people want to stretch doug into being some ultra mastermind villain.
I have seen both Linkara and Doug walker in real life. The diffrence is Linkara only seemed happy when you praise him. Doug just seems to he happy to be popular still
Not to mention the fact that Doug constantly is giving money to charity, he puts charities at the end of every video, and while he does "Charge" for photos, the money from the photos also go into donations for the charities he supports.
Plus Doug has some amazing videos. Like the Don bleuth ones are always great especially the one he actually had him on. The after these messages commercials reviews are also amazing.
I’ve met Doug before, and he genuinely is just regular, nice guy. Has he made bad decisions when it came to Channel Awesome and bad content? Yes, but he just moves on with his life, unlike so many of former CA members who dogpiled him in the CA Document(which a lot has been confirmed to be fake, exaggerated, or he said/she said). It’s pathetic that as much as they hated Doug, they still desperately needed/leeched off him.
I really wasn't happy with how all that went down, but I'm just glad he endured. I wish he could've moved on from Nostalgia Critic like he planned, but he still puts effort into it at least.
I mean the people I know who "confirmed it to be fake" were mostly the people getting called out in it, and I remember their proof was just like "Nuh-uh" and then them infamously accidentally outing JewWario as a sex pest in the process. Some of the stuff I remember from the document includes the site not really giving people who weren't the big producers much of a chance, which was evident if you just *used the site*. There were at least 50 producers on the site at one point and the fact that most people don't even know that just proves the point that they weren't getting promoted much; and then the accusations of sexism which, like, cool that the male ceo of the company said that there wasn't any sexism towards the women. Believable. But the whole thing did turn into a mess, with Lupa and Erod being whiny bitches about people who were supporting them? It's gross that people are acting like the whole document was mostly made-up but Lupa being completely unable to move the hell on is sad.
I think its also worth noting that Chris isnt just taking pot shots at Lewis and Doug for the hell of it. He's said multiple times, he loves both of their content and has shown a knowledge of their work that backs it up. Hes making jokes about them out of genuine fondness and appreciation, even if its from a "so bad its good" perspective, because he seems to recognize that they're passionate and trying their best. And I think thats why Doug's reaction to Oney teasing him was in such good spirit; he can recognize that Chris is coming from a place of love, as a fan, so he can take it on the chin and laugh with Chris. While Lewis cant distinguish teasing and bullying, and thinks all criticism is indicative of hate (or he's just too sensitive and insecure in his flaws), so he sees Chris not as fondly teasing him as a fan and a comedian doing a bit, but genuinely hating on him.
Linkara wouldn't be near as popular without Chris. It's likely he wants to be popular for more legitimate reasons, but he should just ride off it. I remember Tommy Wiseau had a similar feeling about The Room at first, but came around when his movie got popular. I hope Linky does the same if he hasn't already.

The biggest irony in all this is that Linkara was, in fact, a former Channel Awesome member and was a noteworthy contributor to the infamous "Not So Awesome" document that made Doug a bit of a pariah in various circles of the internet. The fact that Doug could take multiple obvious jokes at his expense in stride and yet Linkara decided to get this pathetically butthurt over receiving the same treatment kinda speaks volumes about both of them.
Say what you will about Doug, but I think most people would love to quit their job to pursue their passion the way he did. Even if it didn't work out quite the way he wanted, he had the opportunity to give it his best shot, which a lot of people can't say.
for a time i wanted to join the CA team and do video content as well, but after some time watching the content and kinda seeing how taxing it could be and hearing the rumors about how little they paid or how horrible the work hours were, i was quick to drop that idea and just be a fan up unitl 2016 when all he did was make political jokes and alienate half of his audience with no remorse. im sure he is a nice guy face to face, but he isnt pure of heart like everyone thinks he is.

@cartoonistlouis773 I'm not sure why he has that name. Most likely an inside joke. But they are right, his videos are great critiques of the situation and l recommend them. He is not PC however and says words that other youtubers would censor (and im glad he does) plus the videos are kind of lengthy but they are really good.

I think what really helps in making Doug more likable, other then his ability to roll with the punches, is that after the Change The Channel shitshow, it was ultimately revealed that he's just a guy who wants to make goofy videos with his friends. Unlike Lightbringer and all the other former Channel Awesome alumni who seemed to genuinely believe that what they're doing is high art. I've never bet him personally, but I knew some people who have met him, and based on what they've said, you can tell he's just a really fun and happy guy who likes doing what he's doing. The criticism and hate doesn't matter to him because he had a good time.

You can absolutely tell that most of the videos "exposing" or "criticizing" Doug are some of the pettiest, most thinly-veiled attempts at character assassination by less popular RUclips critics who are jealous that Doug is still relevant. Even the videos about The Wall Review, despite rightfully making fun of a bad review, just reek of jealousy when they try to paint Doug as a miserable, washed-up personality when he's just a normal dude making videos. Mainly looking at Dan Olsen but also many of the lesser "takedown" vids.
I couldn’t imagine being Linkara and getting mad at OneyPlays “making fun” of me. If it were me, I’d say “I pick the worms every time” and joke how I still haven’t gotten my jacket back all the time, especially at conventions.

a friend of mine once described Doug Walker as an old school youtuber in both the worst way and best way worst-cause he's relying on old style of content creating that has fallen off with the times, and while he did attempt to diversify his content he seems to be unable to move away from the core of his Nostalgia critic gimmick (though I heard his recent reviews are a lot better and that he did improve) Best- cause he keep old school principle that seems to have been forgotten with time and that's you should never take insults and mockery too seriously, sure the internet is cruel but sometime all you need to do is lay back and join the laughter (something that 90% of modern internet users just cannot comprehend)
I've watched almost all of his reviews, and I can say Doug really feels like a legit critic in his latest videos. Yeah, he still makes fun of certain things and make some jokes that aren't as funny as others, but I can say he learned a lot from his past mistakes. At least he doesn't keep shouting angrily as in early videos, now he seems more relaxed and experienced.
Doug has been open with his pre-Nostalgia Critic stuff. His A Simple Wish video ends with a montage of it. His Alice in Wonderland video ends with a reveal of his old nerdy fanboy shrine of Tim Burton. Doug has never been ashamed of his cringey stuff, and that makes it less cringe to me. He's self aware.
I absolutely love Doug and how he still does the nostalgia critic skits with genuine love and effort showing that he enjoys doing the bit and it's all jokes and fun at the end of the day
I was watching this video and then my neighbour came and we watched it together. He said that this video changed his life and touched his heart. I then went and rented a projector in a big field and my entire town watched it and it changed their lives too. We all are so grateful. Thank You for this video….
Ever since B-Mask put out his video on Doug alot of Essays bashing on Doug have just not at all aged well, I'm still seeing videos today still complaining about Doug with outdated arguments, like the last one I saw from 2 weeks ago started off with "Doug is a pathetic narcissist who desperately wants to be taken seriously" while showing a clip of Doug being 100% Down to Earth with his Audience, plus Doug clearly doesn't take himself all that seriously and recently has taken most peoples criticism, He's been putting out reviews that are like the reviews you see from people now-a-days, He still does the Old AB Format (From Start to Finish) but a good chunk of his stuff has ABAB (Going back and forth between scenes to explain points) and I know alot of people hated him for doing the AB Format for so long. I think the Internet has officially run out of ways to bash on Doug outside of saying "I think he's annoying" which is fine, but people really wanna drag things out for as long as possible, it's over now, time to move on, It's okay to not like him but drop all of the old arguments already, they don't work anymore. Essay Channel: Why does it take Doug 20 Minutes to say He liked a Movie!? Me: I don't know, Why does it take you 4 Hours to say You don't like him? Okay, I'm done.
Honestly it makes me happy to see Doug walker still doing well on RUclips and doing his thing, he’s cringy as hell but he’s a good sport and just does what he enjoys. I’ll always respect that over someone like Linkara
One bit of info I'll throw in to consider is that back in the day the TGWTW chat threads and fan forums were filled with some of the most toxic "fans" you could possibly imagine. There were times where it felt like people were competing to see who could be egiest, most vitriolic people on the planet. So given that environment, you could see perhaps how someone might see fun ribbing instead just being an extension of that old toxic fan culture. Mind you, both Doug and Lewis both were exposed to the same toxic fan culture from back in the day and obviously came away from the experience with very different attitudes. So this is rather a data point more than anything else
Yeah, It can also go the other way, you could say that it helped desensitize doug to the lesser stuff he receives today. It'd have to depend on the person how something affects them.
IIRC, there's an episode of AT4W where Linkara DOES bring up Lightbringer. He basically admits that it was crap and is deeply ashamed of it. Like it's one of those things that people get that's a super sore subject. It doesn't fully excuse his reaction by any means, but it does help explain why he's not alright with it.
That's good to hear. It may not come across in my video, but I have no problems with Linkara. I just wanted to focus on his OneyPlays response, which wasn't the only thing, but was all I had time to cover. I respect that he still grinds because making content isn't easy. I've made cringe comics and videos too, so I can understand where he's coming from.
I have no idea why he'd be ashamed of it. Like yeah it's bad, but that's what makes it funny. If I were him, I'd do a Kickstarter to have it printed and distributed, and even tell t-shirts and hats and shit.

I’ve never heard of Linkara until OneyPlays, and I imagine the same goes for a lot of other people. I knew right away that their Linkara jokes were all in good fun and came from a place of admiration, so all that was left was essentially free publicity for Linkara. If only he saw it that way. Also, yeah. His theme song does slap.
Unfortunately, I found out about him through the Mister Metokur video on him. But literally everyone else who makes fun of him bring up way worse things than his old comic. I don't think at any point, Chris or anyone in those videos ever said anything mean about him. It's not only free publicity, it's not malicious or hateful.
What a shame. Linkara always seemed chill and authentically friendly when I chatted with him back when Channel Awesome was That Guy With The Glasses. But seems to me like he has gotten more and more bitter over the years
As a fan of Linkara i do agree with his theme song being a right banger. I do wish he'd lighten up about it, but i also know that the internet can run things into the ground. Light bringer is pretty old atleast by internet standards and I know that Linkara is not the fondest about it. Constantly being called 'The lightbringer' even if the character was a self-insert which, I don't know if it is or isn't, probably got annoying fast. Plus he's put a lot more effort into being 'Linkara' Then he was the maker of the light bringer comic, so it's likely just frustrating for something old you aren't proud of that was done as a fan-hobby vs your more professional works to constantly be brought up. Because that's kind of the difference between A lot of the reviews and something like light bringer. Light bringer was a comic made by a comics fan that was just made when he was young it was not a professional comic. While linkara reviews professional released comics. I'm not saying that makes his reaction Okay but I think it's why he isn't fond of Light bringer becoming the thing that oneyplays has made 'popular' to call him.
Linkara seems to think every joke is an insult. I remember he made a big deal on tumblr over how much he hates Lower Decks, despite never watching it. He assumed it was making fun of Star Trek even though it's an official Star Trek show.
Lower Decks is some of the very best new Trek content. It does make fun of Star Trek but in a mostly loving way I’d say. On the other hand seasons one and two of Picard might be official star trek but I got hearty ‘we hate the source material’ and ‘we hate the fans’ vibes. It was Last Jedi all over again.
@@robertgaudet7407 Rian Johnson, by all indications, has a deep love for Star Wars. It depresses me a bit that people still drag that movie. That's not to say it had no problems, but an enormous chunk of the things people say about it were inherited from Force Awakens. Like Luke being washed up and having retreated in shame - all of that was literally brought up in Force Awakens. The only thing the movie did was not make a plot twist where those things they said happened actually didn't happen. Also other things which were just... long-standing Star Wars themes covered in beloved media like the Old Republic games, about the Jedi Order being inherently a flawed organization. Anyway, my point is, put the blame on J.J. Abrams. Him and his stupid mystery box shit are the poison pills that killed the sequel trilogy. If the absolute trainwreck that was Rise of Skywalker wasn't enough of an indication of that, I don't know what is.

Abrams may bear some of the responsibility for the sequel trilogy’s problems, but I think it’s unfair to put all the blame on him when 1) Abrams was apparently one of the few people who had an idea where the sequel trilogy should go, and 2) There were more people than just Abrams in charge of the trilogy. Frankly, if anything, Abrams was put in a massive no-win scenario, and he tried his best with what he had. Look, you’re free to criticize Abrams’ work. No creator should be above criticism. That said, it annoys me that people tend to point the blame at Abrams instead of, Y’know, considering the possibility that he wasn’t the main problem. Sure, he may have some responsibility, but I think it’s unfair to pin all the blame on him and continue the hate campaign against him that a lot of people have been pushing for years. Because, let’s be honest, there are FAR worse directors out there. Also, in regards to Luke in The Last Jedi, all that was established in Force Awakens was that Luke left after Kylo Ren killed his students. It was Last Jedi that showed him being a recluse who cut himself off from the Force and wasn’t doing anything as opposed to formulating a plan to rebuild his school and make a stand against the First Order.

Doug is the best kind of RUclipsr if you ask me. You can laugh with or at him and he'll laugh with you, his content is ironically very nostalgic and he's a great comic actor (like a RUclips Jim Carry if that makes sense). Linkara is a fedora wearing narcissist who thinks he's the main character while jerkin to dead muppets and other things that are less than normal
Linkara doesnt even seem like a real guy. He seems like a CA fanfic self insert character that somehow became real. Also, the way Doug just about dies at Chris doing his impression of him screaming is super funny and charming.
I met linkara at a convention once. It was before I went to art school and the only thing I had for him to sign was my sketchbook. He liked my drawings and that gave me a confidence boost I needed at the time.
You want a copy of "Lightbringer: Genesis?" I could send you the first book! We were successful in our first AND second campaigns for the story, despite being shadow-banned! The second book is still in production, but it will be a three part series when the arc is concluded. I'd love to have it go for a full 24 issue 'season' but we'll have to see on that! Nothing would tickle my taint more than to speak to Oney and friends about everything! Maybe one day!

ive never actually heard linkara talk before watching this so all i could think about while he was complaining about chris mocking him was "wow chris' impression is so spot on".
It's a shame he's embarrassed about his past work and fears being made fun of about it. If anything he should be proud, not everyone even has the drive and the will to actually even try a project like that let alone follow through on it even if it isn't very good. If he had just embraced it and said, "yeah I tried and failed" I don't think anyone would be throwing any shade his way. Hell reviewing his own bad comic would have been easy content.
He really should have taken the Austin McConnell approach and just owned it. Austin wrote a cringe young adult fantasy novel as a teenager, and he made a video of going through the effort to buy up the damn publishing company to get the book off of Kindle. And then he just uploaded a video of him reading the whole book to at least preserve it. It would have been entirely on brand for Linkara to review and tear apart his own comic book.
One thing to note is that, if I remember correctly, that interview with Doug happened AFTER Linkara got angry about Oney on stream. I believe the exact order was: 1) Doug acknowledges Oney on stream and thinks it's funny; 2) Linkara reacts angrily; 3) Doug does the interview and re-acknowledges that he thinks Oney is funny. If my timeline is right, then Doug talking about how hypocritical it would be to get angry about Oney isn't foreshadowing; it's a not-so-subtle reference to Linkara's reaction. And Linkara 100% deserves getting insulted by Doug after he contributed to the Change the Channel document with petty comments about not getting to use the Nostalgia Critic studio for his movie.
I came back to this video after watching Smiling Friends....Its really funny after all the things that happen to the OG Channel Awesome and its Doug that got to be on Live TV. Something that Linkara wishes he can do
I'm just happy that Doug is in a good place. I recall some years back when the entire internet deemed him public enemy #1 over that whole controversy, and I thought it was kinda silly. I still do. People were treating him like some he greedy mastermind conman when really, we was just a dude who screwed up. I think a lot of the Nostalgia Critic's humor has aged pretty poorly, but I never stopped thinking Doug Walker was a decent guy. These shenanigans with OneyPlays proved it all the more for me.
He made an ARG recently called the winter of 83 or something. It seems he still really can't criticisms. He jumped on a live stream reviewing it and seemed overly defensive about valid criticisms

Living in a time where Doug Walker is compared to anyone in a positive light feels bizarre. He was on a serious PR losing streak for a long time, and between Change The Channel and The Wall I thought he'd just be relegated to a backwater laughingstock channel. I'm glad to know he can take things on the chin at least.

Doug seems like a genuinely nice guy! I watch his friends content mostly, I’ve never really watched The Nostalgia Critic, but from seeing this, reading all the other comments and positive feedback, and seeing him guest star on some of my favorite channels, he seems like a chill and funny person :)
The general impression of Doug Walker seems to hold up, that he's probably a decent guy, easy going, but not the best with criticism, and rough on his own material. I'm in the same boat...I found a few of his comments, in the early days, pretty funny. And I actually really enjoyed a few of his non NC vids, where he'd talk about film subjects. One, in particular, was about when to dub someone's singing in movies, and it was really interesting. That's the Doug I like, and it seems like it's closest to him. Don't know the other guy, and doesn't seem like something I'd watch.
He reminds me a bit of the three cups of tea guy. Great intentions and ambition but a bit too disorganized to pull off his plans cleanly. I don’t even get close to pulling off my own plans so kudos to him.
Despite not watching their of their content since I was 15, when I saw the title I instantly knew Doug would be the one that took it well and Linkara would be the one to pitch a fit
see the funny thing about Linkara putting alot of blame on Oney making jokes about the lightbringer, is that I'm almost positive alot of the initial jokes was brought up by Mister Metokur when he did his Channel Awesome videos
Even if it’s past mistakes, you gotta find some humor in them. As you pointed out, it’s not to be mean-spirited, even if you can’t live it down. The important thing is you improve, and I’m doing everything I can to do that myself. Thank you for this video. I’ve gained plenty of insight from it.
The only thing I can say to defend Linkara is I'm gonna assume he's had to deal with tons of people imitating OneyPlays' various imitations of him TO him and that has to be annoying as hell.
I still enjoy the Nostalgia Critic, and am glad that he continues to put effort into his content. There are definitely worse things to be than "cringe" or "sometimes not funny." I also appreciate that he's genuinely passionate about media, even when I don't personally agree with his assessments or analyses of this-or-that. I also met Malcolm once at a convention, and he was just an incredibly sweet human being.
Its wild to me beyond a bunch of gripey video essayists that are comprised of former fans or CA team being insufferable. Doug has a pretty sqeaky clean existence online. If the worst thing people online can do is make a 2 hour video saying dougs style of content is cringe cause its not serious. Then thats an absolute victory for him as a content creator. Dudes living his life and can seperate himself from the nostagia critic persona. I cant say the same for many video essayists and reviewers on the site.
I think part of the reason Doug takes it so well is that IRL he's nothing like the Nostalgia Critic, it's ALWAYS been a character he plays and Doug is a multifaceted human who can self-reflect and acknowledge his own growth as well as the character's evolution. Linkara is actually just like That. It's barely an exaggeration, so attacks on the character are attacks on him. Doug doesn't think being the NC is some noble artform, maybe he's strayed into pretension in the past but I think he's always had a level of self-awareness that this is a silly character he dresses up as and especially these days he's more than willing to make fun of himself and his failures (including The Wall and the like).

@@DTfan43 It really shows how to properly deal with online mockery. Doug has been memed from hell and back. Has been harassed and mocked for his most cringeworthy takes. Yet he takes it on the chin and either ignores it or laughs with it. So there's nothing to really get him on. Any mass mockery is quickly ended when it doesn't get a reaction.
Linkara however will freak out about his old comic being brought up and used to make fun of him. He'll go on a live stream and complain that a youtuber is making fun of him. Which only amplifies the mockery because now everyone knows it bothers him.

What's funny is that Doug recieves actual criticism and straight up insults from A LOT of people from both but well known reviewers and a lot of random people, yet he never really pays attention to them at all, at best he uses them as material for his show and in the case of Chris just says it is funny.

I think people take Doug way more seriously than he takes himself. People on RUclips Will constantly make these hour long documentaries dissecting his character and psyche and call him a failure who wanted to get into Hollywood but failed and is now stuck doing RUclips for the rest of his life; when he’s really just a guy who likes making funny videos on the internet, tried going into ventures that didn’t work out, and is perfectly happy where he is.

Reading the comment section of the video "Nostalgia Critic and The Wall" by Folding Ideas, people are delving so deep into a psyche that isn't real. Everything NC says HAS to be real and his actual opinion, and he's a conservative and a republican and yada yada. It's so insane to see people take Doug so seriously when even when I was a kid i could tell he didn't take his own "opinions" very seriously and hyped certain things up for some often very crass humor. It just makes me laugh when i see people calling doug some "Bleak, uncaring little man" from some world of utter darkness and hatred when he calls something sort of whiny. Read the comment section, it'll make you laugh from how hard people want to stretch doug into being some ultra mastermind villain.
Doug is a fascinating guy, I guess. He makes weird and unique stuff and it makes people want to understand him.

I’ve met Doug before, and he genuinely is just regular, nice guy. Has he made bad decisions when it came to Channel Awesome and bad content? Yes, but he just moves on with his life, unlike so many of former CA members who dogpiled him in the CA Document(which a lot has been confirmed to be fake, exaggerated, or he said/she said). It’s pathetic that as much as they hated Doug, they still desperately needed/leeched off him.
I really wasn't happy with how all that went down, but I'm just glad he endured. I wish he could've moved on from Nostalgia Critic like he planned, but he still puts effort into it at least.
I mean the people I know who "confirmed it to be fake" were mostly the people getting called out in it, and I remember their proof was just like "Nuh-uh" and then them infamously accidentally outing JewWario as a sex pest in the process.
Some of the stuff I remember from the document includes the site not really giving people who weren't the big producers much of a chance, which was evident if you just *used the site*. There were at least 50 producers on the site at one point and the fact that most people don't even know that just proves the point that they weren't getting promoted much; and then the accusations of sexism which, like, cool that the male ceo of the company said that there wasn't any sexism towards the women. Believable.
But the whole thing did turn into a mess, with Lupa and Erod being whiny bitches about people who were supporting them? It's gross that people are acting like the whole document was mostly made-up but Lupa being completely unable to move the hell on is sad.
And even the stuff that was confirmed to be true can be pinned on Mike Michaud and few others who are long gone from the company

I think its also worth noting that Chris isnt just taking pot shots at Lewis and Doug for the hell of it. He's said multiple times, he loves both of their content and has shown a knowledge of their work that backs it up. Hes making jokes about them out of genuine fondness and appreciation, even if its from a "so bad its good" perspective, because he seems to recognize that they're passionate and trying their best.
And I think thats why Doug's reaction to Oney teasing him was in such good spirit; he can recognize that Chris is coming from a place of love, as a fan, so he can take it on the chin and laugh with Chris. While Lewis cant distinguish teasing and bullying, and thinks all criticism is indicative of hate (or he's just too sensitive and insecure in his flaws), so he sees Chris not as fondly teasing him as a fan and a comedian doing a bit, but genuinely hating on him.
Linkara wouldn't be near as popular without Chris. It's likely he wants to be popular for more legitimate reasons, but he should just ride off it. I remember Tommy Wiseau had a similar feeling about The Room at first, but came around when his movie got popular. I hope Linky does the same if he hasn't already.

The biggest irony in all this is that Linkara was, in fact, a former Channel Awesome member and was a noteworthy contributor to the infamous "Not So Awesome" document that made Doug a bit of a pariah in various circles of the internet. The fact that Doug could take multiple obvious jokes at his expense in stride and yet Linkara decided to get this pathetically butthurt over receiving the same treatment kinda speaks volumes about both of them.

for a time i wanted to join the CA team and do video content as well, but after some time watching the content and kinda seeing how taxing it could be and hearing the rumors about how little they paid or how horrible the work hours were, i was quick to drop that idea and just be a fan up unitl 2016 when all he did was make political jokes and alienate half of his audience with no remorse. im sure he is a nice guy face to face, but he isnt pure of heart like everyone thinks he is.

I think what really helps in making Doug more likable, other then his ability to roll with the punches, is that after the Change The Channel shitshow, it was ultimately revealed that he's just a guy who wants to make goofy videos with his friends. Unlike Lightbringer and all the other former Channel Awesome alumni who seemed to genuinely believe that what they're doing is high art.
I've never bet him personally, but I knew some people who have met him, and based on what they've said, you can tell he's just a really fun and happy guy who likes doing what he's doing. The criticism and hate doesn't matter to him because he had a good time.

You can absolutely tell that most of the videos "exposing" or "criticizing" Doug are some of the pettiest, most thinly-veiled attempts at character assassination by less popular RUclips critics who are jealous that Doug is still relevant. Even the videos about The Wall Review, despite rightfully making fun of a bad review, just reek of jealousy when they try to paint Doug as a miserable, washed-up personality when he's just a normal dude making videos. Mainly looking at Dan Olsen but also many of the lesser "takedown" vids.
I couldn’t imagine being Linkara and getting mad at OneyPlays “making fun” of me. If it were me, I’d say “I pick the worms every time” and joke how I still haven’t gotten my jacket back all the time, especially at conventions.

a friend of mine once described Doug Walker as an old school youtuber in both the worst way and best way
worst-cause he's relying on old style of content creating that has fallen off with the times, and while he did attempt to diversify his content he seems to be unable to move away from the core of his Nostalgia critic gimmick (though I heard his recent reviews are a lot better and that he did improve)
Best- cause he keep old school principle that seems to have been forgotten with time and that's you should never take insults and mockery too seriously, sure the internet is cruel but sometime all you need to do is lay back and join the laughter (something that 90% of modern internet users just cannot comprehend)

I've watched almost all of his reviews, and I can say Doug really feels like a legit critic in his latest videos. Yeah, he still makes fun of certain things and make some jokes that aren't as funny as others, but I can say he learned a lot from his past mistakes. At least he doesn't keep shouting angrily as in early videos, now he seems more relaxed and experienced.

Doug's tried to move away from it in the past, but it's resulted in failures like Demo Reel and Pop Quiz Hotshot.
I think what’s helped is him losing his studio, it means he has less time for sketches and more time to sit and review
Doug has been open with his pre-Nostalgia Critic stuff. His A Simple Wish video ends with a montage of it. His Alice in Wonderland video ends with a reveal of his old nerdy fanboy shrine of Tim Burton. Doug has never been ashamed of his cringey stuff, and that makes it less cringe to me. He's self aware.
I absolutely love Doug and how he still does the nostalgia critic skits with genuine love and effort showing that he enjoys doing the bit and it's all jokes and fun at the end of the day

Ever since B-Mask put out his video on Doug alot of Essays bashing on Doug have just not at all aged well, I'm still seeing videos today still complaining about Doug with outdated arguments, like the last one I saw from 2 weeks ago started off with "Doug is a pathetic narcissist who desperately wants to be taken seriously" while showing a clip of Doug being 100% Down to Earth with his Audience, plus Doug clearly doesn't take himself all that seriously and recently has taken most peoples criticism, He's been putting out reviews that are like the reviews you see from people now-a-days, He still does the Old AB Format (From Start to Finish) but a good chunk of his stuff has ABAB (Going back and forth between scenes to explain points) and I know alot of people hated him for doing the AB Format for so long.

Honestly it makes me happy to see Doug walker still doing well on RUclips and doing his thing, he’s cringy as hell but he’s a good sport and just does what he enjoys. I’ll always respect that over someone like Linkara
One bit of info I'll throw in to consider is that back in the day the TGWTW chat threads and fan forums were filled with some of the most toxic "fans" you could possibly imagine. There were times where it felt like people were competing to see who could be egiest, most vitriolic people on the planet. So given that environment, you could see perhaps how someone might see fun ribbing instead just being an extension of that old toxic fan culture.
Mind you, both Doug and Lewis both were exposed to the same toxic fan culture from back in the day and obviously came away from the experience with very different attitudes. So this is rather a data point more than anything else

IIRC, there's an episode of AT4W where Linkara DOES bring up Lightbringer. He basically admits that it was crap and is deeply ashamed of it. Like it's one of those things that people get that's a super sore subject. It doesn't fully excuse his reaction by any means, but it does help explain why he's not alright with it.
That's good to hear. It may not come across in my video, but I have no problems with Linkara. I just wanted to focus on his OneyPlays response, which wasn't the only thing, but was all I had time to cover. I respect that he still grinds because making content isn't easy. I've made cringe comics and videos too, so I can understand where he's coming from.

I’ve never heard of Linkara until OneyPlays, and I imagine the same goes for a lot of other people. I knew right away that their Linkara jokes were all in good fun and came from a place of admiration, so all that was left was essentially free publicity for Linkara. If only he saw it that way.

Unfortunately, I found out about him through the Mister Metokur video on him. But literally everyone else who makes fun of him bring up way worse things than his old comic. As a fan of Linkara i do agree with his theme song being a right banger. I do wish he'd lighten up about it, but i also know that the internet can run things into the ground. Light bringer is pretty old atleast by internet standards and I know that Linkara is not the fondest about it. Constantly being called 'The lightbringer' even if the character was a self-insert which, I don't know if it is or isn't, probably got annoying fast. Plus he's put a lot more effort into being 'Linkara' Then he was the maker of the light bringer comic, so it's likely just frustrating for something old you aren't proud of that was done as a fan-hobby vs your more professional works to constantly be brought up.
Because that's kind of the difference between A lot of the reviews and something like light bringer. Light bringer was a comic made by a comics fan that was just made when he was young it was not a professional comic. While linkara reviews professional released comics.
I'm not saying that makes his reaction Okay but I think it's why he isn't fond of Light bringer becoming the thing that oneyplays has made 'popular' to call him.
Linkara seems to think every joke is an insult. I remember he made a big deal on tumblr over how much he hates Lower Decks, despite never watching it. He assumed it was making fun of Star Trek even though it's an official Star Trek show.
Lower Decks is some of the very best new Trek content. It does make fun of Star Trek but in a mostly loving way I’d say.
On the other hand seasons one and two of Picard might be official star trek but I got hearty ‘we hate the source material’ and ‘we hate the fans’ vibes. It was Last Jedi all over again.
@@robertgaudet7407 Rian Johnson, by all indications, has a deep love for Star Wars. It depresses me a bit that people still drag that movie. That's not to say it had no problems, but an enormous chunk of the things people say about it were inherited from Force Awakens. Like Luke being washed up and having retreated in shame - all of that was literally brought up in Force Awakens. The only thing the movie did was not make a plot twist where those things they said happened actually didn't happen.
Also other things which were just... long-standing Star Wars themes covered in beloved media like the Old Republic games, about the Jedi Order being inherently a flawed organization.
Anyway, my point is, put the blame on J.J. Abrams. Him and his stupid mystery box shit are the poison pills that killed the sequel trilogy. If the absolute trainwreck that was Rise of Skywalker wasn't enough of an indication of that, I don't know what is.

Abrams may bear some of the responsibility for the sequel trilogy’s problems, but I think it’s unfair to put all the blame on him when 1) Abrams was apparently one of the few people who had an idea where the sequel trilogy should go, and 2) There were more people than just Abrams in charge of the trilogy. Frankly, if anything, Abrams was put in a massive no-win scenario, and he tried his best with what he had.
Look, you’re free to criticize Abrams’ work. No creator should be above criticism. That said, it annoys me that people tend to point the blame at Abrams instead of, Y’know, considering the possibility that he wasn’t the main problem. Sure, he may have some responsibility, but I think it’s unfair to pin all the blame on him and continue the hate campaign against him that a lot of people have been pushing for years. Because, let’s be honest, there are FAR worse directors out there.
Also, in regards to Luke in The Last Jedi, all that was established in Force Awakens was that Luke left after Kylo Ren killed his students. It was Last Jedi that showed him being a recluse who cut himself off from the Force and wasn’t doing anything as opposed to formulating a plan to rebuild his school and make a stand against the First Order.
Lower Decks is made by clear Trek lovers. It is a love letter to Trek.
I think the important thing to note is that Chris is legitimately a fan of Nostalgia Critic and Linkara.

Doug is the best kind of RUclipsr if you ask me. You can laugh with or at him and he'll laugh with you, his content is ironically very nostalgic and he's a great comic actor (like a RUclips Jim Carry if that makes sense). Linkara is a fedora wearing narcissist who thinks he's the main character while jerkin to dead muppets and other things that are less than normal

Also, the way Doug just about dies at Chris doing his impression of him screaming is super funny and charming.

I met linkara at a convention once. It was before I went to art school and the only thing I had for him to sign was my sketchbook. He liked my drawings and that gave me a confidence boost I needed at the time.

We were successful in our first AND second campaigns for the story, despite being shadow-banned! The second book is still in production, but it will be a three part series when the arc is concluded. I'd love to have it go for a full 24 issue 'season' but we'll have to see on that! Nothing would tickle my taint more than to speak to Oney and friends about everything! Maybe one day!

It's a shame he's embarrassed about his past work and fears being made fun of about it. If anything he should be proud, not everyone even has the drive and the will to actually even try a project like that let alone follow through on it even if it isn't very good. If he had just embraced it and said, "yeah I tried and failed" I don't think anyone would be throwing any shade his way. Hell reviewing his own bad comic would have been easy content.
To be honest, I went into this video expecting Doug to be reacting to criticism in a hostlie, uncomfortable way and Linkara in a funny and chilled way

He really should have taken the Austin McConnell approach and just owned it. Austin wrote a cringe young adult fantasy novel as a teenager, and he made a video of going through the effort to buy up the damn publishing company to get the book off of Kindle. And then he just uploaded a video of him reading the whole book to at least preserve it. It would have been entirely on brand for Linkara to review and tear apart his own comic book.
One thing to note is that, if I remember correctly, that interview with Doug happened AFTER Linkara got angry about Oney on stream. I believe the exact order was: 1) Doug acknowledges Oney on stream and thinks it's funny; 2) Linkara reacts angrily; 3) Doug does the interview and re-acknowledges that he thinks Oney is funny.
If my timeline is right, then Doug talking about how hypocritical it would be to get angry about Oney isn't foreshadowing; it's a not-so-subtle reference to Linkara's reaction. And Linkara 100% deserves getting insulted by Doug after he contributed to the Change the Channel document with petty comments about not getting to use the Nostalgia Critic studio for his movie.
I came back to this video after watching Smiling Friends....Its really funny after all the things that happen to the OG Channel Awesome and its Doug that got to be on Live TV. Something that Linkara wishes he can do
I'm just happy that Doug is in a good place. I recall some years back when the entire internet deemed him public enemy #1 over that whole controversy, and I thought it was kinda silly. I still do. People were treating him like some he greedy mastermind conman when really, we was just a dude who screwed up. I think a lot of the Nostalgia Critic's humor has aged pretty poorly, but I never stopped thinking Doug Walker was a decent guy. These shenanigans with OneyPlays proved it all the more for me.

I've met Nostalgia Critic at a video game convention 2 years back and he's incredibly chill and laidback
He made an ARG recently called the winter of 83 or something. It seems he still really can't criticisms. He jumped on a live stream reviewing it and seemed overly defensive about valid criticisms
He wasn't really that defensive, he took the criticisms to heart and said he was gonna improve. (It was Night Mind who did the live stream, btw).

Lightbringer and the such is to be so severely critical of his own work and acknowledge it as crap to his critics... Literally: "Yes, this is crap, and here is every single horrible thing I did absolutely wrong in my work in EXTREME detail... Now let's move on to something else because I've learned from my mistake..."
But he hasn't learned... Because he doesn't believe he's done anything wrong... But he can't defend himself with ANY of his work... So he wildly agrees with his critics in an overload of admittance in the hopes they will move on and forget about saying anything bad about him...
Case and Point: Louis claims to be a feminist... Every single thing he's ever produced from Web Comics to Books to Comic Books involve a woman getting raped somewhere in the story's plotline...

Living in a time where Doug Walker is compared to anyone in a positive light feels bizarre. He was on a serious PR losing streak for a long time, and between Change The Channel and The Wall I thought he'd just be relegated to a backwater laughingstock channel. I'm glad to know he can take things on the chin at least.
I mean Doug is just a regular guy making videos cause he wants to make people laugh, and Linkara genuinely seems to think he's some sort of artistic master dropping masterpiece after masterpiece or something. I can pretty clearly understand why one is clearly more liked than the other.
To be fair to Lewis it seems like he might’ve not seen the full context and it could easily be seen as mocking if he only saw the aniamtion. Espically if he’s being refered to as “The Lightbringer” considering he disowned the comic years ago
Doug seems like a genuinely nice guy! I watch his friends content mostly, I’ve never really watched The Nostalgia Critic, but from seeing this, reading all the other comments and positive feedback, and seeing him guest star on some of my favorite channels, he seems like a chill and funny person :)

The general impression of Doug Walker seems to hold up, that he's probably a decent guy, easy going, but not the best with criticism, and rough on his own material.
I'm in the same boat...I found a few of his comments, in the early days, pretty funny. And I actually really enjoyed a few of his non NC vids, where he'd talk about film subjects. One, in particular, was about when to dub someone's singing in movies, and it was really interesting. That's the Doug I like, and it seems like it's closest to him.
Don't know the other guy, and doesn't seem like something I'd watch.
He reminds me a bit of the three cups of tea guy. Great intentions and ambition but a bit too disorganized to pull off his plans cleanly. I don’t even get close to pulling off my own plans so kudos to him.

The only thing I can say to defend Linkara is I'm gonna assume he's had to deal with tons of people imitating OneyPlays' various imitations of him TO him and that has to be annoying as hell.

I still enjoy the Nostalgia Critic, and am glad that he continues to put effort into his content. There are definitely worse things to be than "cringe" or "sometimes not funny." I also appreciate that he's genuinely passionate about media, even when I don't personally agree with his assessments or analyses of this-or-that.

Its wild to me beyond a bunch of gripey video essayists that are comprised of former fans or CA team being insufferable. Doug has a pretty sqeaky clean existence online. If the worst thing people online can do is make a 2 hour video saying dougs style of content is cringe cause its not serious. Then thats an absolute victory for him as a content creator. Dudes living his life and can seperate himself from the nostagia critic persona. I cant say the same for many video essayists and reviewers on the site.

I think part of the reason Doug takes it so well is that IRL he's nothing like the Nostalgia Critic, it's ALWAYS been a character he plays and Doug is a multifaceted human who can self-reflect and acknowledge his own growth as well as the character's evolution. Linkara is actually just like That. It's barely an exaggeration, so attacks on the character are attacks on him. Doug doesn't think being the NC is some noble artform, maybe he's strayed into pretension in the past but I think he's always had a level of self-awareness that this is a silly character he dresses up as and especially these days he's more than willing to make fun of himself and his failures (including The Wall and the like).
One can laugh at himself.
One perceives laughter as hate-speech.
Not hard to figure out which is which.
But the thing is, it's not even criticism. It's jokes.
