I stopped watching Channel Awesome after the whole Changethechannel drama broke and honestly haven't missed it. There's something just off-putting about the Walkers... like there's this cynical and condescending undertone to all their videos that I can't quite put into words. Which is strange because I was an avid fan for literally years...
SonicGirl4Ever same, I think what gets me as that there’s always a moment when they do the “turn-to-the-camera” and try to teach you a Thing™️ and it feels so condescending. Especially now when we know there was some shitty stuff going on in the background.
After the change the channel controversy, the hypocrisy in the Walkers just became way too apparent for me to keep watching. It even tainted the videos I used to watch and enjoy
Around that time I was growing out of them anyways then the whole controversy happened and I decided to just stay away bc I didnt understand what exactly was happening but I just didnt want to support it anymore. Now I look back and I cant believe I used to watch and enjoy NC, hes loud and obnoxious and yeah, they also come off as that teacher whose trying not to overtly call you an idiot but you can hear it in their tone of voice and see it in their face.
@SonicGirl4Ever It's interesting that you mention that, because the one criticism I have not heard people make about Doug and Rob, that seems kinda obvious if you pay attention... is that they seem to loathe their fans as much as their haters. In all of their Sibling Rivalry videos, they both-- although Doug does it more often than Rob, whine about their fans being nitpicky, not being happy with anything Doug does, whining, and just acting dumb and immature over petty shit like the movie not being perfect, or the brothers loving a movie they hate or hating a movie they love. You know, the same culture Doug had a hand in creating. Hell, just watch Doug's NC "review" of The Wall, where he has the untalented actors playing Critic's loyal fans when he parodies the dream rally sequence from the movie (where Pink, the singer, is addressing a large audience). They all behave like mindless simpletons that just go along with groupthink, and that seems to be Doug's way of criticizing them for not thinking for themselves... but he also seems to rely on that for his videos, because how else will he be able to try to pass off his opinion as being not only the right one, but being the only one worth any value? I don't know if I'm explaining this properly, but it seems to me that Doug has absolutely no respect for his audience, as he constantly treats them like they're all a bunch of idiots, but he also seems to enjoy it because it makes him the only intelligent one by default (in his head), and he can do as he pleases, since no one will call him out on it.
Boomers: Doug sits at a table and pokes light fun at cheap movies. Zoomers: Coked out Doug stands naked in front of a greenscreen and yells "I AM JEEEEESUS".
So true. Why can't he simply stick to his old formula of simply reviewing a film instead of inflating it with boring, unfunny, overlong acting skits no one asked for? AVGN shows how to do it right.
@@torstenscholz6243 to give a short answer, copyright enforcement before 2014-ish, no one used to bat an eye when Doug put film footage into his reviews, especially when he reviewed 80's schlock. Thanks to that, he didn't need the skits. Fast forward a few years, he starts reviewing newer movies, rightholders start claiming anything that has half a second of film footage. Since he really seems to depend on the scene-by-scene movie walkthrough structure of his early career, he needs the scene reenactments now. The skit cancer, courtesy of Demo Reel, grew to fill in the free space. And that's why now everyone who watches him is stuck with that gonzo shit.
Nostalgia Critic before he “retired” the character was actually pretty good if you ask me. Rough around the edges, but it was pretty fun and entertaining
Exactly. Now it's all unfunny skits and unfunny actors being shoehorned in, when Doug and occasionally his brother were all the on screen presence it needed. I don't care if these people had been involved for a while already, every time Malcolm attempts to act funny on screen, I want to do the joker pencil trick on myself.
Bobby Bradbury I agree. I liked just simple talk through a bad movie and make jokes about it. It was entertaining and he didn’t try as hard to be funny which actually made it more funny.
I’d recommend welcome to the basement if you liked critics old stuff. They have that same rough around the edges without skits and very knowledgeable about movie history. While their watch alongs are alright their insight and review I find fascinating.
The "golden age" is when I stopped watching. One skit every now and again is tolerable but it got to be too much. I also think he's a bit too harsh on anything that's new.
In his beginnings he did reviews with some skits thrown in here and there. Nowadays he does skits with some slight traces of a review thrown in here and there.
Nostalgia Critic was funny from 2008-2014. The problem? The skits really just started to become way too much of a reoccurring thing. Also the entire situation with Channel Awesome and not just admitting to what they did? Really makes me not want to watch him again.
@@minkstar9021 Are you literally comparing apples to genocide? Ha! You Channel Awesome fanboys are pathetic. @@limberlad And in Germany this shit happened about 75 years ago and we (I'm German) did learn our lesson and paid high prices for our mistakes that led to this shit happening. #ChangetheChannel is only about two years ago and didn't stop the Walkers and Michaud from going on and remaining the egomaniac douches they've always been and will always be.
You know ... it's even hard to rewatch old stuff. We "all" grew out of it and got more educated or whatever but the NOSTALGIA CRITIC is full on stuck in 2008 and it seems like he developed ZERO as a creator, a creative or just as a human.
I haven't seen Hocus Pocus either, and had the same experience. It was a fucking trip. He's self referential but he isn't self-aware. He actually thinks the suit is good and the writing is funny.
I was lead to believe that the Nostalgia Critic and his goons have to reinact parts of the movies because they were constantly getting copyright struck by the studios that made the movies they reviewed. But it was actually just a bunch of horn-tooting and dumb shit? That’s sad and it’s sad to lie to your audience.
It's crazy in hindsight, but I actually learned a lot about '80s/'90s pop culture and some basics about movie cliches and tropes from the 2008-2012 era of Nostalgia Critic. The videos clearly haven't aged very well (compare them to AVGN videos from that same era) but I think there's still an amateur charm to them. It was fun seeing this cartoonish, dorky character riff and critique movies and shows from his childhood with mostly just himself, a camera, and movie clips. Once Doug Walker got too much into the skits/reenactments and inserted himself more and more into the character of the NC, the charm was lost.
she’s a great lady and her videos post-ca have been amazing. if anyone that might read this thread hasn’t seen her video titled ‘look pretty and do as little as possible’ go check it out. it really showcases all the things that make her work awesome at once.
I liked her a lot until I noticed she’s not super knowledgeable, in spite of the facade. She gets a lot of small things wrong (and a few big ones) that tell me she’s forming a view then looking for evidence, not the other way around.
used to watch him as a teen, thought he was HILAAAARIOUS..went back recently and watched some new videos and thought "omg, this is terrible, what has happened to NC?" so i went back and watched the ones i remember loving when i was younger and theyre pretty awful too, they just have less skits so theyre not AS shit but it seems his particular style for the NC character probably just appeals to an immature audience...which is probably why he "reviews" stuff like frozen now...the man was 32 when that movie came out, hes not nostalgic for it, the entire premise is a lie now
No one ever talks about NC’s Nostalgic Commercials Series, I enjoyed watching those as a kid. He’s legitimately funny sometimes and seems a lot more laid back while watching them so it’s not annoying. Only good Nostalgia Critic content
I used to like his commercials series, but I felt something was not quite right about those, like they could be better. Then I found some retro commercials compilations on RUclips and I've been watching those ever since.
He's just a relic of a time when everything was Epic on the internet. And a product of that time. God only knows how any of this will age. Lets hope good
Content doesn't age, it literally stays frozen as it is; essentially immortal. It's the culture and society surrounding the content that ages and adapts to new standards and/or taste.
Yeah, he kinda is, a lot of people know him and hes one of the big ones on RUclips, doesnt make him a good iconic figure tho, and since change the channel he has fallen from grace
Say what you will but he is in a way iconic. He's one of the first movie reviewers on the platform and was a big part of what the movie commentary community is today. He does have a massive ego tho
Now, I find more ironic when he mocked Adam Sandler (on his Pixels review) for refusing to adapt and being trapped on his old style of humor, using the same jokes.
This video looks like you did that cringey reviewer split screen effect so they can meet an alternate version of themselves and have a debate or fight or something
I think Doug's #1 issue is his failure to grow as a person. He's just a more egotistic version of how he acted a decade ago. He's not aged to become more calmer and collected, but still funny like the AVGN. The AVGN is a _father,_ yet the way Doug acts it feels like it shouldn't be legal for him to have sex.
Nostalgia critic used to be good. But then he sold his soul to Michael Michaud and now just repeats the exact same cringey style of video without any charm, creativity, or irony.
I really don't like his unscripted stuff and even some of his scripted stuff, mainly due to him coming across very condescending, self gratifying and cringey... Though this is mainly from his more recent videos

NC is a great example of the example of losing sight of what made him good in the first place and falling to his own hubris. Campy, but in an endearing kind of way. Then all that drama happened (Lindsay Ellis for example) and that's when I started seeing how much he's changed and it's honestly really sad.

"You have 2 years to make your movies, we have 2 weeks!" Soooooo we're just gonna ignore that CorridorDigital has a very similar time frame and still pumps out some quality shit?
Corridor Digital are actual professional creatives, willing to take feedback, bounce off each other for ideas and grow as creators . Doug cannot do any of those.
@@matthewpunk2012 Look up "Nostalgia Critic cringe" on RUclips it's a video by Drop-N-Go. You can also watch the compilation of Oney making fun of him too. Should come up also as one of the first results
Nostalgia Critic seems to be going through Family Guy syndrome. Started off great and everyone loved it, but then the series arguably ended before it's time (albeit for different reasons but that's not the point), he was brought back by popular demand and was still doing really great for quite a while, but then almost out of nowhere fell into absolute crap, and is determined to keep the series alive as long as possible.
My ex-girlfriend and I used to have a ritual, where we'd celebrate a new AVGN and Nostalgia Critic review by smoking a joint while watching. I realize now why I used to laugh at Doug's work, and that's why I stick to Jenkem now.
I remember being I think a freshman in high school, and loving the shit out of it. The review of The Mask 2 was a video I’d watch over and over. Over time I just stopped watching, remembered, then went back to see what’s new. I was horrified, the skits that were just sprinkled throughout the videos now BECAME the videos. I couldn’t even get through it, it was so bad, at the beginning it was endearing! The skits were just to take the piss out of something in the movie, then continue with the review. For the time, I’ll admit, it was ok. But now? That 2012 shit doesn’t belong to something made NOW. He needs to improve what he makes and he actively refuses to build upon the foundation. I had recently revisited AVGN and I was honestly impressed, he actually improved quite a bit, made me laugh and incorporated the funny skits with an actual review. Fuck you Doug, because you’re the reason you’re like this, and you know it.
I was a big fan of the Nostalgia Critic, but when he started adding more skits and those so-called reviews that were more awful after school drama club productions I sort of falling off the bandwagon. Then he started implying that people didn't like his new stuff because they were "closed minded" and just "not open to new things." GAG! I think that the skit style added to the Alice in Wonderland review and made it interesting, but in other reviews it didn't fit, let alone add anything to the review. I think Doug's ego got in the way of something that started out as a fun hobby. PS: The Hocus Pocus review is nonsense even if you have watched the movie.

Which review is that from?
@@jollycrocodile6211 it’s a line from OneyPlays
He is incredibly condecending and obnoxious, he seems trapped in the 90s
Boomers: Doug sits at a table and pokes light fun at cheap movies.
Zoomers: Coked out Doug stands naked in front of a greenscreen and yells "I AM JEEEEESUS".
Lol
So true. Why can't he simply stick to his old formula of simply reviewing a film instead of inflating it with boring, unfunny, overlong acting skits no one asked for? AVGN shows how to do it right.
@@torstenscholz6243
to give a short answer, copyright enforcement
before 2014-ish, no one used to bat an eye when Doug put film footage into his reviews, especially when he reviewed 80's schlock.
LMAO
Fun fact: that's how i became an athiest.
You make this video, and then nostalgia critic makes the "the wall" "review" 😂🤣😭

Yeah I hope they talk about it on the next podcast
Shut up
JAR Media: NC can hardly get any worse.
NC: Hold my The Wall CD.
@@nobody2021 I think Malcolm is one of the funniest ones in the crew
I’d recommend welcome to the basement if you liked critics old stuff. They have that same rough around the edges without skits and very knowledgeable about movie history. While their watch alongs are alright their insight and review I find fascinating.
Did he retire the character? I'm surprised... whats he doing now?

The "golden age" is when I stopped watching. One skit every now and again is tolerable but it got to be too much. I also think he's a bit too harsh on anything that's new.
same, the simple man infront of a camera reviewing a movie was nice to me. The skits added a little to it but it wasnt enough to annoy me.
In his beginnings he did reviews with some skits thrown in here and there.
Nowadays he does skits with some slight traces of a review thrown in here and there.
He's not even a 'reviewer' he just recaps the plot and makes shit jokes.

This video has such a relaxed vibe. The elevator music, the pup making cameos here and there. Very chill big fan
A review starring a popular Internet personality and his way more epic, less popular, brother. a familiar format but a good format nonetheless
Nostalgia Critic was funny from 2008-2014. The problem? The skits really just started to become way too much of a reoccurring thing. Also the entire situation with Channel Awesome and not just admitting to what they did? Really makes me not want to watch him again.

That’s sad and it’s sad to lie to your audience.
my impression is doug wanted to make demo reel and the fans told him no. Instead he retaliated by making the nostalgia critic into demo reel.
I'm going to guess it was all of the above, but mostly Doug just really wanted to do Demo Reel.

Nostalgia Critics ego ate him then shit him out

GAG!
