For CPU Upgrade
1.BIOS update
2. chipset compatible processor simply googling. (Socket, Max. TDP, Intel Graphic ...)
for example HM55, HM65, HM77 Express Chipset ..
Intel Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, 2. generation, 3. generation, 4th gen Intel.
Max. TDP 35W, 45W, 55W
Not: Ultrabook or Some laptop models cpu upgrade is not possible, integrated on mainboard CPU (Intel Pentium 967, i3-3217U, i5-3317U Core, Core i5-4200U, i7-4600U ,N3530 ,N2840 ,n2940 and .. and ..).
Uptade Intel HQ Serie (ix-xxxxHQ) Also upgrade not possible ,intagrated even to matherboard !!
e.g. i5-6300HQ ,i7 ,6700HQ 7700HQ
Here are simple instructions(thumb it up :) )
1) *Check whether you CPU is soldered or not.* You can do this by opening your laptop backcover and checking manually or use some program like sisoft sandra or CPUZ. if your socket is G1/G2/G3 it can be changed but if it is BGA then it can't be.
2) Now, if you have a un-soldered CPU, *check its TDP(Max Power) and generation(1st/2nd/3rd/4th).* You should make sure that both match with the new cpu else you could face problems. 35W should be changed with a 35W and 3rd generation i3 should be changed with 3rd generation i3/i5/i7. Also, make sure that both have the same socket.
3) Check whether your motherboard supports it.
4) Buy thermal paste and *use the video above* to do the thing ;)

Upgraded my Acer Aspire v3-731 Notebook from a Pentium B960 to an Intel i5-2540M.
I had to reset the cmos battery to get the new cpu to boot. Also upgraded modded bios to unlock Advance options to enable Intel's Turbo boost.
Laptop runs like a champ and the extra threads and turbo boost is well worth the time and effort for the upgrade.

this is the simplest way to upgrade notebook processor:
1. first know the processor socket. if the socket processor 'BGA' then it certainly can not upgrade because soldered in mobo. only the processor has a 'PGA' socket that can be upgraded, usually marked 'M' code on the name of the processor.
example: Intel 4700M, intel 4770MQ, etc.
2. know the chipset used notebook. example my chipset is hm77, then search google 'intel hm77', then click on intel website. click compatible product. there is a list of any processors that you can use to upgrade
3. but this is not finished, not all the list of processors listed on intel website mentioned suitable for your notebook. You have to adjust the TDP processor.
example,my prosessor is intel b960, on intel website written TDP = 35W
then I have to find a processor that has a TDP like that too. you can search the same TDP processor through the intel website, on 'find product'
4.after upgrade prosessor,update bios and drivers when necessary

I've just successfully upgraded Acer 7750Z with B950 to I5-2520m. HM65 chipset. It is noticeably faster now.
That's kinda strange.
Aspire V3 has a i7 processors in their line.
So there cn be NO problem swapping a lower-class processor with higher-class. And TDP has nothing to do with it. Even processor with higher TDP will work until the TDP requrements are passed (temperature at least).
So the only problem may be a BIOS.As we know,acer programmers has failed a lot in bioses before and I think they did it again.No special support for a previous generation CPUs required usually.
Anyway I'll try to swap i5 3xxxx with i7 2xxxx and see what will happen.

+Dragan Todorovic in my case, yes since turboboost is just automatic overclock. But since you didnt say its the sam model aswel, i cant know if yours is soldered or not. That much is for you to find out.

I changed the cpu on my laptop Asus X54C (k54c mobo). I upgraded from Pentium B960 to i5 2450m (Sandy Bridge). It works fine but I had some problems with temperatures. On power saver the cpu temperature was 50 degrees, on balanced it was 70 and on high 80-90 degree (very hot for idle). I resolved this problem by puting the processor state to 60% max. I want to put a better thermal paste and see how much can I push the cpu. My laptop sold only with Celeron, Pentium and i3 so it was fun to see that the upgrade works.
QUESTION: I have a broken laptop that used 16GB of DDR3 12800 SODIMM RAM. My Desktop has only 4GB of RAM, but it apparently can go up to 16GB of RAM. I've seen there are slot modifiers that allow Laptop RAM to be used on a Desktop. My question is, "Will the performance of 16GB of Laptop RAM be the same when used in a Desktop as 16GB of traditional Desktop RAM? Or, will there be a difference in performance?" In other words, "Is Desktop RAM superior to Laptop RAM?"

Where did you buy the processor for upgrade? Is it new or refurbished? My i5 3210m has same socket with i7-3610qe, 3610qm, 3612qe etc (g2 988b rpga) so I plan to replace it but I cant find any shop that sold new or used laptop processors. I had a toshiba P875-S7102 with a core i7-3630QM. This laptop has an inherent problem in its design. The screen hinge rips the the base apart (too strong). So, I decided to get rid of it and use its hardware to upgrade another sturdier laptop.
Anyways, On Intel's website it lists supported sockets as: FCPGA988. I filtered inte's CPUs based on sockets supported. And I found a decent laptop on EBAY with i5-3230M. This core i5 CPU also supports the same socket (FCPGA988). Would that work? Was this the best way of doing this? or I would have been better off or more cost effective choosing even a laptop with a lower CPU based on the chipset?
I think it should be possible, as for example my notebook (Asus N56VV) came in two CPU variants, wait for it, i5 3230M and i7 3630QM. I think I will upgrade my CPU as well, I have the i5 at the moment.

you added thermal paste to both the heatsink and the CPU? Most people add it to just the cpu.

Its actually the tdp the i7 has a much higher draw in wattage in actual use and is hotter the board wasnt made to give enough for turbo

sorry earlier in the intel (R) pentium (R) b960 series after I unpacked my laptop it turns out that the rPGA 989 Sockets when I open the official website the information is PGA988, FCPGA988, then I check back with the cpuz Sockets 988b rPGA software

You can even do this with Celerons. I took a Dell Inspiron 3520 with a Celeron B820 installed and replaced it with a Core i5-3380M.
