How loverly as well sad, to see these magnificent vessels which would have been manned by proper Merchant Navy colleagues who were all so professional and took great pride in their work and Service to this once great Nation. I must have been one of the last few blokes to sail into KG5on a Clan Line Vessel, the Clan Maclean and depart on her last voyage to South East Africa before being sold to a Chinese company and handed over in Mauritius and Columbo, Ceylon. Remember standing on Greenwich Park and looking over the river a and seeing all the cranes and the ships in the docks when I was growing up in the 60s All that history and proud people now gone My parents were born in Deptford by the Surrey Docks in Blackhorse Road which has now gone as well These times will never return London was a great city to live in then now it's a cess pit with no sense of community
Thanks for posting. Great days when London's docks full of ships and the Red Ensign flew proudly over many. This must be early sixties as Aaro built in 1960 ,Corfu scrapped 1961and Gallic sold in 1962.
Thanks for sharing this video from times when ships still looked like ships, even the steam driven tramps also spotted a civilized liberty (0:46) stretched way beyond their live span but were kept going mainly by the Greeks until their bottoms fell out! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I cannot get excited about modern ships with their multi-storied accommodations balancing over a cutoff butt (excuse: stern). They may be super economic and efficient re short turnarounds in port but for the seafarer this has taken most of the joy out of sailing.
As mentioned above - one of Amazon, Aragon or Arlanza - ca. 20,000 tons built for Royal Mail at Harland & Wolff 1959/60. Sailed in the S.America/N Zealand trade for about 10 or 11 years before being on sold for conversion to car carriers by Leif Hoegh. Good looking ships affectionately referred to as "The Three Graces".
I was a Customs Officer at KGV, also looking after the ICD at Silvertown run by K&N, and this facilitated a job at Kuehne and Nagle in Kanada...but now the entire superstructure has collapsed, and rightly so. Free Trade Forever! Let's hope BoJo's posturing doesn't return us to those idiotic days of Nationalism and T Forms
