I love that he's actually speaking from experience and not just out his ass. The board discarded him the second they thought he was done being useful for the company. In spite of his sacrifices

This is the difference between the hero and the villain. the villain’s always goes with the argument “why do anything at all if it is useless” but the heroes always reply with “Because it is the right thing to do”. It was and always will be about saving people’s lives because it is what a hero does regardless of the fame and money they get. Which is why we love spiderman
"Despite everything you’ve done for them, eventually they will hate you." That hits hard seeing as it's true in reality. You could do something amazing for loads of people but then suddenly they can just hate you.
This is because people you assist are almost invariably dependent. If you don’t do everything they need forever, you’ve failed them. Avoid dependent people.
Don’t worry the Almighty knows that’s all that matter and keep intentions pure. For example don’t do for show because it’s people’s nature some can get jealous.
"What do people love more than a hero, spiderman?" "Don't you fucking say it." "A foe." "For fucks sake..." "And what am I, spiderman?" "Please just stab me already..." "I'm Dafoe." "Goddammit."
Willem Dafoe played this part amazingly. His delivery and cadence is like a theater play. The OG Spider Man movies has aged so incredibly well. Still the best films aside from the animated ones.
@yoseph.Imma back up op on this sorta, if you take this scene as Norman talking to Peter and take into account what he said right before he died that he’s been like a father to Pete this does take on a warped perspective of wholesome.
@Sprite Whether or not something is wholesome is all about feelings. All I see is a deranged man talking down to a teenager he beat up. So, no, it isn't wholesome.
This is a haunting quote that serves as a perfect example of what makes Goblin so terrifying. Yes he's essentially a terrorist with super strength and access to sci fi levels of military grade technology but he is first and foremost a manipulator. He actively attempts to gaslight Peter into believing that being a hero will 1) prove pointless in the end and 2) result in innocent lives being lost. The only thing stronger than Goblins urge to kill and destroy is his need for absolute control over anything he deems a threat to his power.
Nah, he wasn't smiling. When people smile there's a noticeable shift in the lower eyelid because you have to lift up your cheek slightly to smile. So he's talking with a really cold look if his eyes are just cutting daggers into Spidey in this scene....
I really love how this quote is what puts Goblin and Spiderman as complete opposites. Osborn spent years improving the world, giving everything to his company because he believed it would improve humanity. He even tested his super soldier thing on himself being sure it would take the human race to its true potential. Amd yet they turned their backs on him and screwed him over.
Norman Osborn is essentially a failed hero - he strove to do good but his sacrifices were deemed insufficient by those he tried to help, which embittered him. The Green Goblin epitomizes the saying "if you can't be a good example, be a bad warning" for Peter.
All you can see in this scene is his eyes, but you can tell Willem Dafoe is giving his all in his facial expressions. I can see why they decided to show his face more in NWH.
I like how he actually spoke to Peter like a teacher, serious and fast, almost as if he cared about Spider Man and his choices in life, thinking that his nihilistic mindset was right and an example for Spider-Man to follow.
Goblin is right, and that's what makes him such a compelling villain. You understand his motivations, because he had everything taken from him. Not only did he have his company stolen from him, but he was also forced to give up valuable time with the son he loved because of it. He felt like the world had betrayed him despite everything he did for it. The Goblin is the very personification of this idea of hatred brewing within Norman Osborn. But I think Peter's response to Goblin's question is just as beautiful and legendary. "Because it's right." It doesn't matter what we're going through. It doesn't matter the power we have. We can ALWAYS choose to do the right thing. And that's exactly what Peter does. It's what SPIDER-MAN does. It's why Goblin was ultimately wrong in both Spider-Man 1 and No Way Home. Because both Peters did the right thing and rejected Goblin's evil philosophy, their goodness overcame Goblin's evil. Spider-Man is a beautiful tale of good triumphing over evil even when choosing evil and rejecting good would be so much easier. It's about choosing to always do the right thing because you are given the power to do so. Not because of what people will think about you, or if they will hate you. But because you KNOW it's right. With great power comes great responsibility.
Good & bad/ Right & wrong is a social construct created by those in power. If those power were what we considered to be "evil "& they taught us to be "evil" over time then most people would be "evil". What's acceptable is all based on power. The world is amoral & Goblin understands it. But it's great movie nonetheless & people don't want a depressing ass message like that.
@@4OR-Designs It's sad because the truth only hurts because of all the lies. The truth wouldn't hurt if you weren't living so many lies in the first place. Which is why people need to learn what "get over yourself" means on it's ultimate level.

Well he was proven right in NWH... Also I would imagine that the people at the bridge were ballsy because they dont think Goblin will attack all of them.
Proven wrong within the fictional story, sure, but on a meta level NWH proved him right. People are only just now cheering for Tom's Spidey after Goblin literally took his whole life from him.
Yeah his critics aside many times I see people winning money not having a shred of respect for him like they just came for money and will forget about him later
I like how goblin sounds like he actually believes he is helping Spider-Man and is genuinely confused as to why he continues to be a hero even though its screwing up his life
But then in contrast, in Spider-Man 2 Aunt May talks how being a hero is important. Goblin says you'll be hated for wanting do something good, but Aunt May says that you do something good because it's what you have to do.
Well he’s not wrong saving the city or world is something but that’s just it it’s “something” because you can either love doing it or do it out of obligation while the two can and are mixed with the trademark great power great responsibility trope it can easily fall into just responsibilities if peter was the only hero and his villain roster still existed it would be a I’m doing this because no one else can and not in the good way where everyone who isn’t morally dubious wants to be the hero of the story look at the spidersona trend for examples of that but that’s why being the hero is tbh sad in a way you can easily fall into a day job nightmare where you aren’t enjoying it and you’re essentially just a different version of one punch man doing something they loved
As a young boy, I only liked the action scenes and when spiderman fights with his villians.... But now as a young man I understand it more thoroughly and the acting is just pure gold
Felt the same way too. The scary part of the Goblin's speech it actually makes sense. And the worst part for Peter is that he's struggling to accept that he has a point.
@@gamexig2213 you should watch the show. But basically by being an Eminence in Shadow the whole world can hate you and it will have no effect whatsoever.

I like how it is followed up in Spider-man 2, where we see Peter and Spider-man are one and the same, as he saves somebody without the mask and has his mask fall off during the train scene.
I don't think that many heroes become heroes for other people, rather they become heroes for the sake of other people. The difference between the two things is care over expectation. A true hero saves the people because nobody else can, not because the people expect the hero to save them. In that aspect, I believe every hero becomes a hero for themselves because their personal journey demands it.

It’s pretty cool when you realized that this film tapped into a few ideas that The Dark Knight would almost a decade later, such as the idea that people will only love a hero until they fall.
I mean he wasn’t really entirely right here. He was proven wrong later in the movie. So I guess he was wrong, yet right in a certain way since there’s good and bad people everywhere.
What’s also really creepy in this scene is that he’s using a relatively normal, subdued tone of voice. In my memory, Goblin was always hamming it up and gravely and hoarse, like in NWH when he says “can the Spider-Man come out to play”. So it’s jarring to come back and see him speaking so calmly. Yes he still has a sinister tone of voice, but it’s so subdued and his body language, his eyes, his mannerisms are so subdued here. This is when he is pulling all the stops to manipulate and gaslight Peter, and this is when he doesn’t mess around. It’s like in The Dark Knight when The Joker was called a freak by Gambol, he lost his sentence and got really quiet, before refocusing. Or when he was completely stumped and quiet when the people of Gotham refused to kill each other. Or when Thanos was meek and humble when trying to reconnect with Gamora during his “a small price to pay for salvation” scene. It’s scenes like this that show a person for villain for who they truly are. And this shows that the Goblin isn’t just a terrorist or a supersoldier gone wrong. He’s a demon who is not playing around when he’s devoting himself to his biggest goal in life - to corrupt, to destroy people from the inside. Whether it’s twenty years ago or today in theaters, the Green Goblin deserves ranking alongside the likes of Thanos, Heath’s Joker, Kilmonger, etc.
@@jordteps1775 yeah, green goblin and heath affect you from the inside out. While Thanos and kollmonger only stay in your mind for the duration of whatever film their in. Spiderman was the first Superhero movie i watched as a child and i truly didn't understand what Goblin was talking about here. Coming back to this scene nearly 20years later with a different perspective, i can hear the wisdom under the madness.
Even though the “as children we want to be like the heroes, but as adults we understand the villains” saying has been memed to death it has a point. Especially with well written villains that have more motivation than just being a mustache twirling villain that is evil just for the sake of being evil. Villains with a real human motivation can be relatable at times.
Nah I never felt that lizard guy from amazing Spiderman to be relatable. Like who tf wants to evolve into lizards. Alteast if it was an advanced being I can understand
My favourite part of this is that Spider-Man’s whole being, his entire CHARACTER is a direct counter to everything he’s saying. We KNOW why he bothers, and why he won’t stop
I LOVE it when the hero and the villain get to battle their philosophies. There’s nothing better than complete opposites trying to win each other over with words. Daredevil did this really well too.
It should be the norm not the exception. Villains should be more like this, with complexity or like Thanos with the thought that the ends justifies the means since he wanted to ultimately save the universe even though it was by removing half the population. That is my gripe with avatar movie, the bad guy has no complexity.
@@Gl0ckb1te the avengers and I ultimately wanted the same thing the salvation of man, but my methods where deemed to extreme. Truly who is the real hero and villian if everything I said came to past.
Dafoe’s Goblin is hands down my favorite villain of all time. I find it kinda cool that I had the entire extended version of this speech memorized as a child. Raimi’s trilogy continues to have such a lasting impact on me and I am sure that is the case for a lot of people.
Aunt may destroyed these lines by saying - Everybody loves a hero, people line up for 'em, cheer for them, scream their names, and years later tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse of the one who told them to HOLD ON a second longer. I believe theres a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble. And finally allows us to die with pride. ❤️❤️❤️ These are just negative thoughts that the Goblin is trying to put on Peter's mind and nowadays people are also so negative due to the current situations that they all are agreeing blindly
In this movie, it came off as Gobby talking out of his butt, because this Peter was too new in his career as Spider-Man for it to relate. The later movies made good on it, but No Way Home is downright built on this premise. And judging by the audience response, and the fact that Peter loses everything and everyone, and that movie is now 4th on the highest grossing box office movies in history, Gobby’s words aged like a fine wine.
In that case then it’s no wonder that they made Goblin the main villain of the film. Phenomenal film, and groundbreaking (literally) performance from Willem Dafoe.
Jesus are you president of marvel public relations or something, NWHs box office has nothing to do with its quality, that movie is not canon to this one and the least memorable part of that movie is ironically the main character because that movie had to steal every other character to make it look good or feel like it mattered
and this quote is still relevant to this day/ rather more apparent with the rise of social media, look at how people engage themselves in things that will make them feel hate, it's like they are addicted to it. Whether it be a celebrity or an ordinary person, there will always be those who find happiness on watching successful people fail or the sufferings of those who try their best.
This is what i think is the Goblin's weakness: That he dosen't get across the idea that some people do stuff without seeking any sort of benefit from it. That people do what they do for the sake of others instead of themselves. This why i think he asks "Why bother?". He asks Spidey why he would help people if he isn't getting any benefits or even love or adulation from it. He never once stops to think that Spidey dosen't seek benefits from helping others.
That's my favourite thing about Goblin's quote. It can be universally applied. The meaning of what he was saying didn't just happen in the Maguire Trilogy, it happened with Garfield and Holland.
Absolutely brilliant.Green Goblin is easily the most scariest villain in the MCU so far.Maybe not the strongest but still the scariest.I mean what can you say about a guy who evilly laughs back at you when you hit him with a Winter Soldier strength punch
"They will eventually hate you." "That doesn't matter to me, I can be the most hated person in the world, but they can't away what makes me me. As long as I'm doing the right thing, saving people, being a hero, and standing for what's right; as long as I stick to my morals, I will always be the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man."
Well said. While there is some truth and wisdom in Green Goblins words it shouldn’t turn you away from doing what is truly right. Always do the right thing even if it means standing alone or being the only hero in a world full of villains. Irl, kindness nowadays- is more rare than you think.
It manipulation and true at the same time. Yes, green goblin only wanted Spider man to join him, but at the same time he’s not wrong, most people who does good or be a hero don’t always get praise, just outright hate. I hate it when a villain has a good point.
@@estudos6156 Tobey basically just says what’s true, he simply says ‘because it’s right.’ Peter doesn’t really refute what the Goblin says, in the scene right after this one he’s being persecuted by the Bugle for being Spider-Man and that proves that the Goblin is technically right. Peter’s point is that he just doesn’t care. If doing the right thing makes people hate him then gee that sure does suck, but he’ll keep doing it anyway. He won’t do what the Goblin does and spend the rest of his life using his power to get what he wants, he’ll keep doing the right thing in this pretty thankless world just to make it a better place and to make the people in it safer
This is true everywhere. In MCU, the public turned against him for being a hero. And, we the audience finally started cheering for Tom when he struggled. We love to see a hero fail. Now I feel bad lol.
People are entertained by seeing the struggle to the finish line is just as difficult for someone else. Some people cheer knowing that crossing the finish line is possible. Some hold contempt knowing they didn't do enough to cross the finish line.
Would have been so cool to see Goblin repeat this in NWH. it was a perfect example of Goblin's point that no one truly cares about the hero, but only about themselves.
Eh, I think the message gets across well enough in NWH. The Goblin just shifts his reasoning slightly, saying that "morality" is the problem instead of compassion. Here, the Goblin argues that eventually, everyone will turn away from Spider-Man. In NWH, the Goblin encourages Spider-Man to turn away from everyone else. And in a way, the Goblin's words have a lasting effect on Peter. He does end up turning away from everyone else, but not out of a lack of morality, but out of concern for their well-being and the greater universe. The Goblin's speech here does indeed come to pass, but for the exact opposite reason.
I don't know who is reading this, I don't even know whether i will be able to explain this with this much bad knowledge of english, however language doesn't matter sometimes. it has been 22 years after its release and suddenly today is the day, these lines are hitting me word by word.

Convinience. What humanity strives toward to.
Idk why i find this soo relatable for mr beast these days
I like how he actually spoke to Peter like a teacher, serious and fast, almost as if he cared about Spider Man and his choices in life, thinking that his nihilistic mindset was right and an example for Spider-Man to follow.
He did cared, he loves him.
Beautifully said
Good & bad/ Right & wrong is a social construct created by those in power. If those power were what we considered to be "evil "& they taught us to be "evil" over time then most people would be "evil". What's acceptable is all based on power. Indeed. Is it just me, or do most superhero movies not talk like this anymore?
My respect for Green Goblin is increasing day by day
Wait..., so you're saying that you respect the dude who literally murdered May Parker/Aunt May right in front of Peter in No Way Home lol...
@@whattheworldneedsiscreativ6421 but he isn't totally awful, like some. So there's a little respect due there.
@@whattheworldneedsiscreativ6421 there's a little respect due
YEESH, fella that's going a bit too far.
Why do you respect him ?
Well respect Doctor Octopus if you want to, he actually had a good reason to be a villain.
It manipulation and true at the same time.
Yes, green goblin only wanted Spider man to join him, but at the same time he’s not wrong, most people who does good or be a hero don’t always get praise, just outright hate.
I hate it when a villain has a good point.
If there was any villain in the MCU that could convince you that villainy is alright it would be Green Goblin.
What's more unsettling is that people here are saying that he's right, but are completely forgetting Peter's rebuttal
"cuz..... I missed the part where that's my problem"
What was it i dont remember at all, and i loved these movies
Because it’s considered “cheesy” and “cringe” people still have one thing in common….they despise those old timey heroes
“You see Spider-Man, my father was a drinker”

Spiderman: WHERE IS MJ? WHERE IS SHE????!!!!
bro is trying hard to be funny
Because it’s not about what they think. The only person you have to live with, to answer to, is yourself. That’s why you bother.
"You Either Die A Hero, Or You Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain"
Wrong universe
This is true everywhere. In MCU, the public turned against him for being a hero.
And, we the audience finally started cheering for Tom when he struggled. We love to see a hero fail. Now I feel bad lol.
People are entertained by seeing the struggle to the finish line is just as difficult for someone else. Some people cheer knowing that crossing the finish line is possible. Some hold contempt knowing they didn't do enough to cross the finish line.
Willem Dafoe was the perfect casting for green goblin, i can't see how anyone could have carried this role so hard. ❤
He really gave it his all
@@SpiralreddDo you even know how much he sacrificed for this role?
It is just like "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villian"

The "fail, fall" bit always made me think he said the line wrong, sounds he's correcting himself lol
Yh I always thought that too
@Morgan Oates naw he messed up the line
mr beast right now
Literally what I was thinking bro this quote fits so perfectly
this man was destined to play the green goblin. his voice and execution of every line is just spot on.
Every time I see this, the cadence of Willem Dafoe saying "fail, fall" leads me to believe he misspoke the line, and powered through it 😆
That's what I thought this video was about.
I don't know who is reading this, I don't even know whether i will be able to explain this with this much bad knowledge of english, however language doesn't matter sometimes. it has been 22 years after its release and suddenly today is the day, these lines are hitting me word by word.
The way he says “my path” really shows that despite that everything he does is wrong, he doesn’t want to admit that he’s the villain. Wow.

I remember watching this movie when I was 8. I didn't understand the meaning of what was mostly being said and I just enjoyed the action scenes like every other kid. As a young adult I come back to listen to this quote because not only does it give me goose bumps, but in a way I'm still trying to understand it. Every year that passes the message gets more clear.
Should look at eminem's history. From the mud to the top of the mountain, overcoming adversity, fans and haters, and much controversy. The controversy around him these details are pointless drama baiting, but when he was coming up, the storms he caused, and all because he talked about the truth. Give his "Zeus" a listen. In a way, he was doing what green goblin does and gave some advice to modern rappers. The fans will end up turning on you.
As far as personal experience, what Green Goblin is talking about, is cynicism. You feel that kind of stuff from things like betrayal. Cynicism alone isn't harmful, and that kind of thought process is probably true, it's feeding and letting that cynicism devour you in turn, that is damaging.
