Maybe because they just wanted a different life from the hell they experienced at early ages of their lives. They didn't take pleasure on others suffering and they had noble intentions, that is to better life circumstances.

This is the moment when Pain arc is such a ground breaking in shounen animanga history. It's not always about the fight, but also has a deep meaning behind it to provoke us.
in this story arc kishimoto has reached the highest peak of storywriting and storytelling in Naruto, truly the best written villain, and the philosophy behind his actions is incomparable. This Is why Naruto Is among the best shounen mangas ever.

This pain fight is the one that changed naruto forever it really matured him he never had an ideology before but after this fight it drastically changed him forever and he started to look deeper in things around him than at just face value. After this he started seeking something far more than just strength that became a side goal for him.
Yes! This was the moment he legitimately become an adult. AFAIR, after this fight, he never tell "I'M GOING TO KILL YOU" to his enemy. He doesn't want any hate in Shinobi world, and begin to try to change things. Also trying to find another way out to settle things. That's why Naruto vs Pain was and still is one of my favorite fight in animanga history.

Going to have to disagree about Iskandar's speech. I found him to be a damn hypocrite and completely stupid because he failed at ruling. His Empire failed because he kept pushing and pushing and then he pushed too far and lost everything. Artoria's kingdom fell because of the machinations of Morgana and the fact that many knights betrayed her as she was a practically perfect ruler, and they couldn't keep up. That archer said that the King didn't understand human emotions, yet in order to be a perfect king, one can't let emotions control them, so hypocritically they wanted her to be the perfect king, but also understand human emotions which is practically a paradox.
Pain: So Naruto, how would you confront this hatred in order to create peace? I want to know you answer. Naruto: *Brings out Jiraiya's book* . You and I don't reallt have to worry about it. It's the plot.
The answer is the original answer Nagato had. People think Nagato completely changed his mind to something knew, when he simply just went back to believing in what he had gave up on. Nagato's method was a cop out, he gave up on finding the true answer for peace when Yahiko died. He couldn't handle the "pain". Naruto is able to handle all of that pain but still persevere, just like Jiriaya taught.
Well that's basically what happened. I rewatched that arc over and over again to understand why Nagato would give up his bitterness to rivive the leave. And I still can't find an relatable answer.
Here are the quotes: Pain- you asked me why im doing all this but even if i told you why i doubt very strongly that the knowledge would change anything at all but lets say that i take the time to explain it to you what do you think will happen then? my goal is to fulfil the dream even jiraya sensei was unable to achieve what i want is to create peace and bring about justice oh, i see... that is noble of you that would be justice however... what about my family? my friends? my village? they suffered the same fate as this village at the hands of you hidden leaf ninja how is it fair to let only you people preach about peace and justice? once... the land of fire and the hidden leaf had grown too big to protect their national interests they forced feudal clans to wage was against each other and profited from it otherwise... the people of the village would've starved as it happened our little nation and it's villages became the battlefield where the great nations wage their war each time they did our nation was ravaged and laid to waste after many such battles the great nations stabilised but our small nation suffered and it barely recovered... you and i are both seeking the very same thing we both want to achieve the peace that jiraiya sensei envisioned you and i are the same we're both motivated by our desire for peace and justice the justice that i have delivered against the leaf village... ...is no different from what you are trying to do to me everyone feels the same pain in losing something dear you and i have both experienced that pain you strive for your justice and i strive for mine we're both just ordinary men who have been driven to seek vengeance in the name of justice and if one comes to call vengeance justice such justice will only breed further vengeance... ...and trigger a vicious cycle of hatred right now we live in such a cycle i know the past and can foretell our future it is the same as our history so we believe that human beings simply cannot understand each other and they never will this shinobi world of ours is ruled by hatred and hatred alone so, naruto... how would you confront this hatred in order to create peace? i want to know what your answer is.. Just because we’re born with different opinions and those opinions keep changing as you grow up and experience things. One of the many reasons we will never understand each other, even if you try to keep a open mind and try to understand one’s opinions you will always pick a side and have your own visions of the world deep inside you.

Nagato’s speech about justice, Iskandar’s speech about a true king, & Aizen’s speech about Gods will forever be the greatest anime quotes of all time
Going to have to disagree about Iskandar's speech. That archer said that the King didn't understand human emotions, yet in order to be a perfect king, one can't let emotions control them, so hypocritically they wanted her to be the perfect king, but also understand human emotions which is practically a paradox.

we both want to achieve the peace that jiraiya sensei envisioned
you and i are the same
we're both motivated by our desire for peace and justice
the justice that i have delivered
