I’m 77, and taught skiing for many years and continued skiing and enjoying it enormously! Then within two months in early winter I fell twice, breaking the same foot. First required a boot to wear, but the second requires some metal plates and PT. No skiing that winter😭😭!
The following fall season, mu husband was diagnosed with heart issues. So neither of us got to ski, as I really needed to monitor him.
Living in an apartment on the second & third floor turned me into a lazy, depressed old lady, taking my stability, strength and overall mobility too far away from me, only increasing all issues listed!
When I ran across your vlog, it gave me hope and enough encouragement to get me to the Senior classes at the YMCA! But,not to worry! I check your “station” every day and love all that you offer! Today, the lower back/hips thing really got my attention, because every morning I am just what you described! And I’ll be in bed doing that one both morning and night! Thank you from me and all the seniors you’re helping!
And … I have a friend who is has limited & is determined to carry on as best she can. So I sent her your vlog and she’s hopefully, going to sign on!
Thank you ever so much for your brilliant advice! Crack On!

Thank you for this, Will. Do you have 3 or 4 exercises you would recommend for a 75+ year old woman in generally good health, with little arthritis, but in not in good conditioning, that would be good to help moving again?

75 you're doing well, stay focused on your posture doing all properly that in itself is hard work, I'm 63 and swing at the park, side to side too, it helps with balance and hips, you'll notice strenght swinging for sure, never mind it might look weird it's not like you're a man anyway just don't talk any young person's ear off neither of you are there for that, love from Montreal!❤🎉

I’ve been doing Pilates for years, on and off, for lower back pain, mostly concentrated on my glutes. I do find if I neglect my stretches and exercises I get symptoms of sciatica and hip stiffness.
The all in one glute strengthener and resistance band exercises you showed recently are excellent, the broom squat I have just done and wow, that feels good.
Thanks for your output, it’s very much appreciated.

Question for Will or anyone who cares to answer: for the deep squat, if I have knee articular arthritis and history of meniscus tears, should I do this? At present getting in, and especially maintaining the deepest position causes pain. But pain is not always an indication of damage, or is it? In other words is there any way that simply getting into this position, which intuitively feels good for the rest of me (hips, low back), could actually damage my knees or is it simply an issue of getting used to the sensation and the body will acclimatize and adapt in a positive way? Of course you can’t actually give me personal medical advice and I would never hold you to that. But in general, what is your sense of this, from your undoubtedly large experience with older arthritic knees (I’m 57, about 20 kilos overweight, but fairly strong and fit, except for my damn knees. I keep hearing how the deep squat is so essential and beneficial. Please advise to the best of your abilities. Anyone’s personal experience in this regard is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try pointing your toes out and widening your stance a bit. My knees refused to do a squat and I had to start like that and wasn't getting very deep. My understanding is that I needed to build up the muscles around my knees and after about 6 months of regular strength training I can say that only one knee hurts now and only occasionally. I'm also able to drop into a full squat with toes forward and in fact one of my exercises is to do squats with a 40lb dumbbell. Hope you're able to get where you want to be!
