Will, you are a miracle worker! The nerve flossing was amazing :) I thought my life was over. I did it once just before bed and in the morning there was probably 90% reduction in pain. It's indescribable what severe chronic pain does to a person's mental health.

Don’t know where to start..56 yr old who had microdisctomy and laminatomy surgery done here in Florida about 2 yrs. ago. Type of person that don’t feel like retiring or lay down and do diddly squat. Anyway I reherniated it again and it’s 7mm and contiplating whether I should rest for 4 to 6 months and probably lose my job or have micro surgery again to get me over this issue again..now what doctors don’t tell you if surgery happens a 3rd time than u need FUSION 😮 so I got a lot to think about I pray for everyone that has this disc issue…By the way if u have nerve issues on the side of the knee like I have that drives to the brink of madness take Chelated Copper 2 to 5 mg daily and build to 20 mgs for 3 months than about 5 mgs for maintenance saw a video of Dr. Berg and it has helped me so far at 5 mgs…Good luck

Very clear presentation, I’ve seen(tried) each of these exercises before but honestly most of the presenters are hard to watch or follow.
Typically I tend to overdo the exercise or just do to many exercises. You’re the first person that I’ve watch that said it may take up to 12 months to heal. All the others talk about quick relief.
Perhaps I’ll do better managing my expectations and will be more patient.

Hello @@BleFx I'm sorry to hear you're having a back issue. It's rough. I'm about six months in and feeling a lot better. Still not 100%, and having some issues up higher in my back now. It's a long process. But nothing like when I first injured my disc. I read a book called the Back Mechanic, by Stuart McGill, and that helped me a lot. I based my recovery on it. The only other advise I can give is to try and stay calm and be kind to yourself. It will get better!

I’m sixty and was diagnosed with sciatica in 2018 and referred to a physical therapist. Because of the expense I didn’t go. Fast forward to 2022 and excruciating pain I finally had to go. It was very expensive but the recommended techniques really help. I must do them everyday. Mr. Will since your page popped up it has been such a Blessing in my life. The slide glide and the nerve flossing are phenomenal. They didn’t teach these Thank you for helping us. 😊

Although all physiotherapists on RUclips recommend the cobra exercise as the "best exercise" for a herniated disc, the more i do it, the worse my condition gets and it's even painful while doing it although i barely raise up (and i definitely can't raise up as far as you're demonstrating it).
You're also supposed to tighten your glutes while doing this exercise, but that also seems to make the pain worse for me.
Should i leave this exercise alone and if so, what would be a good alternative?

    *Abstract*
This video presents three exercises recommended by a physiotherapist specializing in over-50s and sciatica patients to help relieve pain from a herniated disc in the lower back. While emphasizing the importance of individual assessment by a healthcare professional before engaging in any exercises, the video details the Cobra, Nerve Flossing, and Side Glide exercises, explaining how each can contribute to pain relief.
    Summary
    Herniated Disc:
0:55: Discs in the spine act as cushions between vertebrae and can develop weaknesses, leading to herniation where the fluid center pushes outwards.
1:34: Herniated discs can cause pain, sciatica, numbness, and weakness in the legs.
2:15: Many people suffer for months before seeking help and may be doing exercises that worsen their condition.
2:36: The best exercises vary for each individual and should be cleared by a healthcare professional.
    Exercises:
    4:20: Cobra:
Improves blood flow to the injured disc, potentially speeding up healing.
Suitable for individuals whose pain worsens when bending forward and improves when upright.
Performed by lying face down and lifting the torso with hands under the shoulders.
Recommended to do 10 repetitions several times throughout the day.
    8:37: Nerve Flossing:
Helps the sciatic nerve glide more freely, reducing trapping by the herniated disc.
Suitable for individuals with sciatica, numbness, and pins and needles.
Performed by sitting with feet off the floor and alternating between raising and lowering the leg and head simultaneously.
Recommended to do 10 repetitions on each leg several times a day.
    12:57: Side Glide:
Helps restore spinal mobility and reduce pain down the leg.
Suitable for individuals with sciatica in one leg.
Performed by standing next to a wall and gliding the hips towards the wall on the opposite side of the pain.
Recommended to do 10 repetitions on the appropriate side several times a day.
    *Summary:*
17:29: These exercises are not suitable for everyone and should be cleared by a healthcare professional.
17:54: Recovery from a herniated disc typically takes 3-12 months, with 3 months of focused rehabilitation.
18:12: If no improvement is seen after a couple of months, seeking professional help is recommended.

I woke up bent over to my right side. Lateral pelvic tilt. The pain is in my left lower back, groin, left thigh near inside knee. Other youtube physios say to put painful side against the wall and press on the hip of the non painful side. Mechanically that straightens me back out although the straightening hurts. Your saying to do the opposite side against the wall. The non painful side. . Does that still apply originally when correcting the tilt to become straight again? Thankyou

Hi Will, I absolutely love your videos. Im writing from Melbourne Australia. I wish I could come & see you. Your advice & explanations are absolutely helping me.
I wish I found you earlier. In 2022 I experienced a year of back pain & sciatica. My MRI stated L4/5 disc bulge impinging on L5 nerve. I think it was due to prolonged sitting at my desk while working from home for hours.
I tried Chiro, osteo, physio, acupunture, swimming, walking, inversion table, myotherapy, tens machine, you name it! I lived on my mat, always laying down at home trying to get some relief. I couldn't work or look after my family with 3 kids.
I then had 2 steroid injections whic provided no pain relief. I then proceeded to a L4/5 Microdiscectomy & laminectomy on 29/11/2022. The surgery provided immediate relief of my sciatica. I was good for 6 months.
During that time, I did clinical pilates and swimming weekly, walking x 2 daily & daily physio exercises.
Would you believe I developed back pain & sciatica again? My disc has protruded again.
After listening to your videos, I put it down to incorrect posture while standing at my stand up desk all day, washing dishes, driving etc, aggressive exercises and my anterior pelvic tilt and bending while I was gardening one day.
I love your videos, and I'm trying all your advice. Keep them coming please 🙏
    Thanks for your help 🙏

More recently have some bulging discs around my neck but also have herniated disc I am told both on the neck and lower back. My question is that while I understand that bulging discs might be heal over time, could this be true for herniated discs as well?

It's interesting how there is 2 schools of thought here. Some doctors say to treat a herniated disc just like a broken bone - immobilize and let it heal, and other is saying add mobility and work on muscles. Confusing.

Yes, there is no single perfect approach. The immobilise approach is quite old-fashioned in my eyes but different approaches work for different people.

A disc hernia can be towards the stomach and back, and if the hernia is towards the stomach, is the cobra exercise good for that condition?

True, the cobra can be an aggravator for people with arthritis in their lumbar spine. Everyone is different.

He did say that with the cobra, it increases blood flow to the area, which allows for better healing.

Look up Dr. Suh of Specific Chiropractic NYC. ( Gonstead method) . He seems to have helped countless people from all over the world. I'm suffering from a bulging or herniated disc right now and I'm calling him tomorrow to book an appointment asap. I'm blessed to look not too far away from his office in New York. But the exercises in the video can be very helpful as well. Apparently not for every case. Look up Specific Chiropractic NYC on youtube. Dr. Suh seems extremely knowledgeable, effective and caring.

Thanks for your videos which I've found informative. Both the cobra and the wall exercise aggravate the pain for me. The flossing one feels fine as leaning forward offers me relief. Do you have suggestions for any other exercises including flexion rather than extension? Lots of exercises recommended for disc bulges/herniation require extension which causes me immediate discomfort. I'm not sure whether this indicates that my diagnosis is incorrect or whether my symptoms are just unusual!

    • @HT-Physio
      @HT-Physio  Год назад +1

Thanks for the comment. Pain on extension can happen for ~10% of people in my experience so does not necessarily indicate a wrong diagnosis. Everyone is different, best to get a proper assessment from a professional when choosing the best exercises for you. We usually recommend avoiding the painful movements.

@HT Physio - Over-Fifties Specialist Physio Thank you for the info. In six months of researching the condition, since the problem began, it's been difficult to find guidance and appropriate exercises for when flexion and sitting are the comfortable options and extension causes pain, tingling and numbness. Professional advice is to keep going to pilates etc which means an experimental process of learning which exercises to skip in order to avoid aggravating the problem.
Perhaps a video for the *"exclusive"* 10% would be useful as it sounds like there might be a fair few of us who would be interested.
