Caitlin's biggest talent isn't the characters she plays (although she's scary good at that), but her ability to make you build the context around her characters in your head so completely despite never seeing anyone else in her videos. You can build the entire rest of the scene, including how other characters are reacting, perfectly in your head based on her performance of just one person.
Exactly!! Completely agreed!! That is my favorite part of watching her videos - just imagining the stares and facepalms of everyone else in her company!!
Precisely this. Somehow I am seeing a long table with people looking disgusted and Ben slowly sinking away under the table while the food is getting cold.
@Sam S I think they had a good run (they only seemed to be together for one year) but she is getting needy and desperate. I feel pity for Ben, he has to break up now, preferably before new years eve. It's going to get ugly .
@Sam S There are so many different scenarios you could imagine, but the most remarkable thing to me is that it doesn't occur to this woman that she could just ask Ben to marry her. We live in the friggin' 21st century.
It would have been less embarrassing if she had got down on one knee and proposed to Ben. Well, at least it would have been over in less time! (Also, women suck at proposals.)
i too feel like one of Ben's sister's bestfriend for 8yrs who has been part of their family's christmas gatherings since then, and rolling my eyes while she tells her speech because I know that Ben can do better than actually proposing to her because they just met the 2nd year of pandemic 😂
I interpreted the spill as planned. The character here was offering Ben an opportunity to kneel to clean up the spill but then suddenly and out of nowhere propose to her.
@Robert Yang I didn’t interpret it as that but more so that she was just clumsy and generally inept. But the drink spilling was definitely planned by Caitlin
As Ben’s older brother I just want to thank this lady’s speech because without it, Ben would not have had the courage to come out to us on New Years. We love you Ben!
That was the detail that made me think this speech was a last minute, desperate gambit for a proposal - if she had prepared it in advance, she would have LED with "In these unprecedented times," instead of starting with "In times like these- in these unprecedented times" and amending it on the fly.
@@jjjjjjjjkigghh8662 I actually use that phrase, haha. Although not in casual chat in real life but when I'm using it as a performative figure of speech to drive a point home. I'm not saying you're wrong either, at least about the first bit. I have a mouth on me. Unfortunately i dwell in a bog of existential turpitude. The sounding off is probably my best coping mechanism.. along with satire ;) I can't quite imagine using it in a speech at a dinner. I love how inappropriately self important it is Edit: turpitude doesn't even mean what i thought it means, i think i mean torpor. I just like it because it sounds a bit turnipy. Thereby perhaps proving your point about people who use "unprecedented"
Ben's parents are glaring at her through the entire speech, especially the mother. She refers to her only as "that drunken floozie" and together they try to reason with their son, "You've had your fun with her, Benjamin. It's time to grow up and start thinking of this family's image." They later replace her with a serious brunette lawyer who doesn't want children, but will have one for the sake of the family's image. She doesn't mind, the nanny will do all of the icky parts. This is one of the few characters I feel nothing but empathy for. She's not the usual self-centred, obnoxious brat we love to hate. She's an insecure, sweet girl who can't read the room AT ALL, and thus can't tell that no-one wants her to make this speech, and sadly can't tell that the guy she's so desperately in love with is absolutely not interested in her beyond the short term. He doesn't need his parents to tell him she's not fit to be a part of this family. He just needs them to tell him that he's been dragging out this one night stand for too long.
That is almost exactly what I thought. Only instead of the brunette lawyer, Ben had a 20-year-old reiki instructor sidechick that he's been seeing since before Thanksgiving. Let's face it, Ben has always been a disappointment to the family.
@@11cabadger Lol, I can see Ben juggling multiple unsuitable women. It's a hardening mission for his parents to finally get him to that acceptable lawyer, and it's a wonder they even found another family to negotiate with - he was becoming the talk of the country club for his embarrassing antics!
Caitlin’s acting is so nuanced- the history of their relationship and family dramas coming through in one speech expressed through every subtle glance, awkward pause or nervous laugh. Crazy talented!
As Ben's older sister, I'm glad that everyone is going to be talking about her and not about the fact that my husband recently got passed over again for a promotion at our family business because of his supposed "drinking" problem. He does NOT drink all day. I for one have never seen him drink in the morning, he always goes to work, and he doesn't even drink spirits. Jeez.
@@Kattywagon29well, I for one think that it was most of the family’s judgmental attitude towards her boyfriend that stressed her out to the point of failing. Don’t you know after you told her to stay away, she ACTUALLY LEFT HIM, and the depression afterwards meant she just stopped going to her clinicals? YOU should be ashamed :(
@@ykwtfim Don't put that on me! Everyone was talking about it, but I was the only one who cared enough to tell her that he was cheating on her and you know what? She already knew!!!!
As Ben's younger sister, I am glad this speech interrupted our relatives questioning me about how university's been going and are going to be distracted with my brother's drama for the next few weeks. Or that I have been saving up to run away to Europe to escape all my problems and elope with some guy I've been dating for five months. Thank you, Bethany, I'll send you a post card ❤️
Ben was just minding his own business, having a good time with family. Now look at him, he's cringing, painfully smiling and nodding wanting the year to end. Poor Ben 😔
POV: You told him at the beginning of the relationship (7 years ago) that you never wanted to be married and now all of your friends are getting married so you start panicking.
@@ajogoz I wonder why do parents make preasure about getting married? I am from Andorra ( Europe) and this doesn't really happen in my culture. Parents don't care if you get married or not, they would just care about it in case you are marrying somebody they think its harmfull. Otherwise most parents would make preasure about studies or jobs but not about other things related to personal life. I imagine that must be horrible because then you must have a hard time knowing if you are chosimg something freely or just because you feel you should. That can potentially destroy your life if you do things you dont truly want or feel or where ready for. How do you deal with it?
@@YFL.111We tend to just careen from one relationship to the next like a moth to flame. All this while we are bombarded with artificial images of the "perfect lives" of the wealthy and celebrities. Definitely not sustainable!
The one thing that makes this even more believable for me is the very last couple of frames where it dawns on her that she will not be getting proposed to, and needs to leave immediately. That glimpse of actual, genuine, embarrassment and realization is what sold it for me. Kudos to you
I don't think that's about her being embarrassed. I think she's saying she is giving her boyfriend space that he is expected to use for ring shopping or talking to his parents and her parents about his desire to marry her. Except for perhaps the final second.
This caused me so much discomfort that I'm thinking of valid excuses to give for leaving a party that I'm not even attending. This was a hard sit through.
In a way I feel bad for her because you know Ben is just stringing her along because it’s too hard to break up. But you also somehow know her friends and even his family have been trying to point this out for months to her and she just keeps laughing it off. Caitlin, you’re incredible
There’s a reason she said “we’ve had an amazing year” and not “we’ve had X amazing years”. They’ve only been dating for a year, less actually. Ben wasn’t going to invite her to his family’s Christmas, but she strong armed her way into it through passive aggressiveness and trying to make him feel guilty. Which he didn’t, but he wanted to make her shut up
As someone who grew up in the fakest WASP community, she nails it perfectly! The, "trying to act like your life is so perfect while you're crying inside at the holidays because yet again you are not being proposed to by your boyfriend", is so relatable. And most of my friends would agree. The other friends are going though a post-pandemic divorce. Her acting is always comic gold and captures the "types" of people perfectly. She needs to be in major movies.
All those little jokes and bits that this character developed over the years as defense mechanisms are used to EXPOSE her right here... that was heartbreaking to watch.
Gosh the sneaking in line about the “convos I shouldn’t hear i’ll make myself scarce LIKE I HAVE DONE THIS PAST WEEK” just kills me xD You know the mom doesn’t approve!!
I honestly don’t know how she bears up under the weight of being this perceptive. Seeing how weird people can be at this level would drive most people insane.
Bens cousin here, I am stoked because you ruined any possibility that anyone else in the family is going to ask me how rehab went. Run Ben!! Run far away as fast as you can!! Longest 2 minutes on the internet, you have amazing talent.
God the fact that I lived through this. My cousin's 1st gf did this at a party and it was the most awkward shit ever. Nobody even pity laughed when she "messed up" her words and tried to make it funny, and kept glancing at him and insinuating he had a ring for her. We were completely dead silent because we all knew he was planning on breaking up with her soon. He broke up with her after the party too lmao. She wasn't bad but she had a tendency to make everything about her and just never shut up so it was a relief when she was gone
That last sentence, "She wasn't bad but had a tendency to make everything about her and just never shut up so it was a relief when she was gone." That hit home so hard, and while I could string out a story to support this, let me just say that I told the girlfriend of one of my best buddies this to her face almost word for word exactly this in front of him and her friends during the second or third mass gathering I had been invited to. While it was rude, I was also vindicated. At the time, before Whatsapp or whatever, we used Yahoo Groups in the early 2000's. I was sent private messages after the "confrontation", I was later told by multiple "friends of hers" how thankful they were that somebody said it out loud. I was obviously never invited to gatherings with her again, and I have some inclination that it might have been the last time they all met together like that and I said the quiet part everyone was thinking/feeling out loud.
I think part of it is this isn't an ahole character, just a person who really wants a commitment and is delusional about the prospects of that. It's fun when Karen gets her due, it's hard to watch somebody humiliate themselves.
I think the long, mortified pause after spilling booze all over herself was a perfect touch. Eg this kind of minor accident is something people do all the time after having a certain amount of drinks and gesticulating with a glass in their hand, and not everyone is going to respond in shame. But it's like the character experienced this abject epiphany of not being able to rely on herself at the moment it matters the most, the dislodged expression mid-speech and stretched out intrusion of self disappointment and alienation/disconnect in that moment is HILARIOUS and something i feel like anyone who's ever been drunk should be able to relate to, especially in a situation where they felt uncomfortable (and were drinking to mask it then lost some of their inhibitions). When you're drunk, it's reasonably common than you would feel like you have something profound to say that needs to be expressed immediately, while having lost the wherewithal to recognise that aspects of one's speech or motor skills have been affected. It's a schism between the sober neurosis and the drunken moment, and done beautifully. It's just mortifying. I love it, and am so relieved to feel at a massive distance from the crux of this scenario
As Ben's weird cousin, I'm just glad she interrupted before my grandmother and aunts started asking about my own partner because we are absolutely not ready to have that conversation. Thank you girl now we can spend the rest of the night murmuring about how you and ben are absolutely not the best couple we've seen
Gotta say these bits are really good for practicing social anxiety management b/c watching them evokes the same emotions as being in an uncomfortable/fumbled social situation. It’s incredible how immediate this made me feel like I was in a room full of painfully silent family members watching this poor girl struggle to keep it together.
If this were a romantic comedy, she would be dumped as soon as the cute girl who’s opened up her bakery, that she’s never at, but it somehow stays open comes into town or whatever.
this feels SO MUCH LONGER than 2:28 and honestly i can't help but applaud you for that (your 'girl who is absolutely getting dumped' series is my favorite)
As Ben, I had to give the "be polite, let her talk; I'll explain things later" look to the family. I want her to do well, but realized she wasn't going to be the one to help me become the best version of myself. I got the heck out of that relationship, but I felt bad about ending it. In the end, it was the best thing though... I didn't want to waste anyone's time and I hope the best for everyone involved.
As a girl who is nothing like this, all I felt as this went on is immense sympathy for this girl. Like, yes, she is overdue for therapy and some anti anxiety meds perhaps but she just really wants to be loved 😢
She’s so awkward and desperate. I’ve watched this several times now and I’ve really warmed to her. Being married to her would be a nightmare. But she definitely needs a friend.
Agree with some of the comments. It's one thing to deliver your lines but a whole difference when no one is standing opposite to receive. And yet she made me truly believe there's an entire room of people around her at a party. I didn't just see her expressions but of the people around her as well. Master performer.
Thanks Caitlin you did a GREAT JOB a creating awkwardness, clumsiness and DROPPING HINTS. He’s gotta be super stupid if he didn’t pick up on the hints. 😂😂😂
It's scary how good Caitlin is at nailing these personality types. I laugh at these skits, but it also disturbs me to think about how many layers of artifice many people carry, and... that you almost never really know what's underneath it all.
You can't help but feel sorry for Caitlin's character in this skit, even if she's making a fool out of herself. Her word flubs and awkwardness just make her oddly endearing.
As a Slavic girl, I am just so relieved we don't really have these type of toasts in our family's or friend circle. They are so American TV to me. However you can't escape some kinda heated political debate (probably parents fighting over whether the Soviet Union was great or terrible)
Her interpretation is so good that i can see the faces of the boyfriend's family looking at each other knowing how awakward this is but the most important part is that i can see the boyfriend's face looking at her with such an embarassment, really impressing
Is it passive aggressive? I thought she was just very socially awkward tbh. I didn’t interpret her as being aggressive, but more so using the speech to subtly (because she doesn’t know the definition of subtlety) hint to Ben and give him the go ahead in case he’s scared she’ll say no. I read the character as being ditzy physically and emotionally, but not malevolent.
@Mary Webb Yes, insular! This is the kind of person who implodes when you criticize them. Instead of changing their behavior, they are so self-focused they will either refuse to believe the criticism, or if you do get through to them they will just turn internalize it and get low self-esteem. But they will turn everything inward and never make the connection. Always self-focused
She is so good that even me, who is perfectly capable of understanding that she is a normal human being and is probably a very nice person still goes “ugh, not her again” whenever a video of hers comes up. She is great, very good at her job.
Right?! It's like you think an annoying family member has resurfaced, and then you remember that no, it's that total stranger who just does an uncanny impression of them.
She's participated in a few collegehumor game shoe episodes and it was so strange to ACTUALLY see that she's actually eloquent and intelligent, cause we've only come to know her through her shitty personas :D Like, we can all assume that she's probably more functional than her characters but seeing her real personality felt so strange because we don't know much about how real Caitlin acts
By “weathered the storms” she actually is just talking about the 50+ fights that were caused by her insecurities after drinking too much. No shade, I’m speaking from experience. 😂
She's lighting the fire of synthetic urgency in front of "the entire family" so she can turn around when he doesn't and say how he humiliated her in front of the entire family.
The storms they have "weathered" were Ben refusing to go to the jewelry store on the eve of any special day (valentines day, her birthday, 4th of July, Halloween, Christmas, their anniversary - although he forgot what day that was anyway) to "window shop". Ben also refused to be a good Instagram boyfriend and do cute pictures with her everyday, didn't want to take her as a plus one on the boys golfing trip AND they had a public fight one time in December about whether they should kiss under the mistletoe or not. UGH SUCH HARD TIMES.
She is so good that she actually makes me feel sympathy for this person she’s portraying- either having zero self-awareness of her overconfidence or being riddled with such a lack of self-worth to try SO HARD. The final 2:24 is sad to me either way. So… GOOD JOB!

It would have been less embarrassing if she had got down on one knee and proposed to Ben. Well, at least it would have been over in less time! (Also, women suck at proposals.)
This was so good that I caught myself half fake smiling and nodding along while I desperately hoped she'd finish quickly while I half listened
i too feel like one of Ben's sister's bestfriend for 8yrs who has been part of their family's christmas gatherings since then, and rolling my eyes while she tells her speech because I know that Ben can do better than actually proposing to her because they just met the 2nd year of pandemic 😂

She really dropped the “in these unprecedented times”
Lol so many cliches 😂😂 This person just likes to hear herself talk, and never reflects
lmfao right
That was the detail that made me think this speech was a last minute, desperate gambit for a proposal - if she had prepared it in advance, she would have LED with "In these unprecedented times," instead of starting with "In times like these- in these unprecedented times" and amending it on the fly.
I had a friend in school and we would deadpan look at each other across the room every time someone would drop that little word salad.
I love how inappropriately self important it is
Edit: turpitude doesn't even mean what i thought it means, i think i mean torpor. I just like it because it sounds a bit turnipy. Thereby perhaps proving your point about people who use "unprecedented"
That verging-on-hysteria-but-trying-to-keep-it-together laugh is a work of art.
why do i keep watching these!? they are so painful....
Dude, I can literally see what Ben is *wearing*.
This is spot on!!!
It's the brunette lawyer who doesn't want kids but will have one for the image 😭😭

Yeah, no. There's no realization. She's still in full denial lol She's just leaving so they can talk about the "proposal plans".

The last few frames really made it 👌
Huh? She didn't realize anything. She's offering to leave because she thinks they need to get the proposal ready.

What's so bad about her can someone please explain
The boyfriend JUST had a conversation with someone in the kitchen about how he's gonna break it off as soon as their joint-lease is up.
That story warmed my heart.

@@rachelk4805 I actually warmed to her on the second watch. She’s such a dork that it’s almost endearing.
I was just wondering where her friends were.
As Ben's weird cousin, I'm just glad she interrupted before my grandmother and aunts started asking about my own partner because we are absolutely not ready to have that conversation.
