I was a little kid in 1979 and didn’t see this until adulthood (it was the director’s cut). I like how the city setting is portrayed, simultaneously realistic and mythical, each area unique and alive at night. You can feel the distance of the journey and the danger they are facing. The minimalist way the characters and story are given depth is cool too. Nothing over-explained, just good acting and subtle details that convey a lot of meaning. I think it’s deceptively simple, and clever.

If you liked this, theres a "spiritual sequel" that Walter Hill (the director) did after this called STREETS OF FIRE (1984)... also very comic booky, with an amazing cast (Willem DaFoe, Rick Moranis, Diane Lane, among others), more gangs, and a big, off-Broadway style soundtrack (the movies tagline is "A Rock n Roll Fable). Very underrated. Fun fact, Both of these Walter Hill movies sorta inspired the whole "Beat em up" video game genre, with "Double Dragon" taking cues from The Warriors and Steets of Rage series taking off from Streets of Fire.

There was a tie in video game made in the PS2 era of The Warriors, and it's pretty great. It actually starts a few weeks before the events of the movie, as you join the gang as a new member and fight with other gangs over turf, fighting your way through several story missions exploring the movie characters and world, and then the big set of missions that finish out the game are the events of the film. It was a pretty good brawler with light gang management elements, but you might want to just read the story or watch the cutscenes if someone's collected them. It's not official canon or anything, but the game wasn't a cash grab, it was a genuine labor of love for the movie, and there isn't much Warriors media out there.

The production actually had a lot of issues with local gangs in New York during the filming of this movie. Even in the beginning scene with everyone there to listen to Cyrus speak that was filled with hundreds of a real rival gang members and undercover police. During the scene where the warriors stand off with the Orphans, cast and crew had to deal with locals from building upstairs throwing things and pissing on them. The director always kept cash on him just in case he need to pay a gang for protection in certain location during filming.

    2, Late 70s soundtrack.
    3. My favorite character is Luther. He's f-ing nuts.
    4. "Warriors, come out to play" was ad lib. The director told David Patrick Kelly to come up with something menacing
and he looked back to when he was a kid and a creepy old neighbor used to torment the kids by telling them to come out to play.
    5. End it with Joe Walsh.

My understanding is that none of the Furies were actors, but members of a local junior college cross country team. The director sought them out because of the running they had to do.
If you watch the way they run, you can tell they are trained runners. They all have a smooth, long stride; their arms pump in motion with their stride; their posture is upright. That's why the way they run looks effortless.
The Warriors, on the other hand, are not trained. They run with a short, choppy stride; their arms are more flailing than pumping; their heads are down, looking at their feet, creating bad posture. They're struggling to not trip while they run.
It was a brilliant idea by Walter Hill to cast long distance runners to chase the actors, as they were able to run them down for the fight.
One last thing: in an interview, I heard James Remar (Ajax) say they had to do many takes of the chase, because they had to increase the lead of the actors to start each chase, by starting the athletes further and further behind. The athletes were catching them too quickly. 🙂

This movie was filmed in the summer and they needed about an hour and a half to two hours to wet down the streets before they could film to get the vibes right for what they were trying to do, so pretty much everything had to be done on the first take just out of lack of time because summer nights in New York City are so short. Also the script was written to be a modern retelling of the ancient Greek diary by Xenophon "Anabasis" which means March to the Sea

I'll never forget, in 2005, my dad used to have the magazine Game Informer come to our house. And one day he saw that The Warriors video game was on the front cover and that it was coming out. And he looked at me and said "Do you know who they are?" I said no. He then pulls out the DVD and tells me to watch it. He also bought me the game for PS2 when it released. Thanks Dad 😎

The actor is Thomas G. Waites; apparently he's uncredited for "The Warriors" because he and the director had a disagreement about his character (also why the character got thrown under the train)

Now we're talking about a serious cult classic! This movie has so much soul to it. It's unique.
It's worth noting that in the 90s and early 00s, there was a brief burst of remakes of classic 70s movies. Sort of like House on Haunted Hill and Thirteen Ghosts, but less passionate and more cynical. They remade Vanishing Point with Viggo Mortensen in the lead role. And while I adore Viggo, there was no way that movie was going to be good, much less approach the original in spirit.
I mention all that because one of the other 70s classics that was under consideration for a modern remake was The Warriors. It never got off the ground. In my opinion, that's because they were going to cut some of the most iconic gangs like the Baseball Furies.

  • @ProtomanButCallMeBlues
    @ProtomanButCallMeBlues Месяц назад +1

if you're wondering why they made it look like a comic it's because the Director wanted to remind people it was supposed to be an urban fantasy, and not to be taken like it's supposed to be a realistic portrayal of gang life. A lot of this is because of the real life gang violence that got associated with the movie, and for a while many real life violent gang members would cite The Warriors as an inspiration for turning to a life of crime.

Also he was in a movie called The Crow starring Brandon Lee. If you haven't seen that one I highly recommend it, it was based off a graphic novel and was Brandon Lee's final film in which he was killed while filming on set. Tragic accident that ended the young life of Brandon, who was Bruce Lee's son.

One of my favorite movies, hell yeah! =D There's also a video game on original Xbox and PS2, and that game is also great and is one of my favorites, highly recommend! =D =) There's 18 levels, level 1-13 is a prequel story and there's also origin stories how each of the members joined the gang and level 14-18 follows the movie, but they did some changes. Some of the actors reprised their roles - Michael Beck (Swan), James Remar (Ajax), Dorsey Wright (Cleon), David Harris (Cochise), Thomas G. Waites (Fox. Who you also have seen in The Thing as Windows, who also had a fro but was bearded) & Deborah Van Valkenburgh (Mercy).
There's also a comic book sequel (from Dynamite Comics I think) and the plot is about getting Ajax out from jail. That one was ok.
Some fun facts: Both Tony Danza and Robert DeNiro were asked to play Cowboy, but both turned it down. The Skinhead gang The Turnbull AC's all went to a diner for lunch in their gang colors and everybody in there were scared because they thought they were a real gang. Some of the extras in the meeting scene were actual gang members. The Baseball Furies were based on two things director Walter Hill liked - Baseball and the band KISS. There are some deleted scenes and an alternative beginning, which I think you can still find on RUclips.
Fox was originally gonna be the main character, but Thomas G. Waites had an attitude problem back then so his character got killed instead. Tom has said that he regretted how he acted back then. Vermin was gonna be killed by The Lizzies, but he survived because Terry Michos made his character so funny. Cochise was gonna be killed by The Baseball Furies and Ajax was gonna be killed by the cops, but those where changed. Swan was originally gonna get captured by a S/M leather wearing gay gang with dobermans (one of them I heard was gonna be played by Kevin Bacon), later escape and join the gang near the ending.
I would love a Warriors vest, Swan is definitely my favorite character & Ajax is my 2nd favorite, other gangs I like are Baseball Furies, a mime gang called The Hi-Hats and Turnball AC's because according to the game they're into punk music which I like and they're not neo-nazis, they have black members too. I think I would fit more in the AC's because I'm too bald and clean shaved (I shave because I'm bald) =P, and I lol:ed so much at the "Prom gang" gag, that was funny XD ;) =)

Saw this movie in the rental store for years, the cover always called to me. Finally could rent it around 2003 and loved it. Found out later this inspired the gangs in GTA, and as part of an anniversary they did a director's cut with the comic clips, the opening dialog spoken by the director, which was cut from the original version, Rock Star also made a Warriors game for consoles. Most of the main actors are still around, sadly a couple of the main group that were actually local kids that lucked into the roles, are pretty much all gone, so Cowboy and Rembrandt if I remember correctly have sadly passed on along with one or two others. The movie was all night shots. They added the storm bit really quick so they could water down the roads, and catch more light at night, and in the park shoot, they hid the lamps in the trees if you looked very close. Again just clearly doing well thought out things to add enough color and light into the dark areas they filmed. Also that bottle scene with that guy that was the leader of the Rogues, he apparently picked up some of that from a creepy guy at his apartment as a kid, ran with that and quickly picked up bottles from just off set to jingle for it. So legit off the cuff moment that added to the character and film. Ajax I agree was the kind of big cool guy you'd want to have your back, but always had that one major flaw that got back at him in the end.

Everything there, the pathways, the staircase etc. looks pretty much the same.
