I had someone try to tell me in the comments to one of my reviews that the sculpts of DCUC are superior to McFarlane DCM. I think DCUC look so cool and the selection is great but sometimes I think people are blinded by nostalgia.
Thank you very very much for this video. I´ve been chasing the Icons Harley Quinn for a while now, and just realized she´s not going to scale AT ALL with my Mcfarlane´s Jokers. Appreciate it!
I respect that you are one of the few you tubers that defend McFarland as being the great toy line it is . Not perfect but none of them are . I don’t get caught up in companies or brands I just buy what looks cool to me
Yeah. DC Icons is definitely smaller than true 6" in the beginning. But they got a bit bigger with later figures. But really The true 6" were the DC Univer Classics, and the Matell DC Multiverse. And I get why people don't care for mcfarlane figures because they don't really scale with Marvel Legends. But I think the level of detail you get from mcfarlane really shines, cause I had a similar notion myself till I got my first mcfarlane figure being Speed Metal Jay Garrick. Now the Classic Jay is My Favorite, and now makes me wish Marvel legends would go 7" to match that level of detail. But I think mcfarlane could easily do a 6 & 7" line just to make everyone happy. Because he's got talented sculptures there working for him. But yeah Icons and Matell's DC multiverse were great for what they were, and kudos to people that love their line. My holy grail is my john Wesley Shipp flash, and love him. But would I kill for mcfarlane to make a 7" of him? Heck yeah! Lol So yeah. I say enjoy the figures equally.
Like 👍 57. I love my DC Icons Wonder Woman from the 7pack. The hand articulation is minimal and the plastic broke easily. It’s super glued together. I love the sound the figure makes when you articulate the legs. Barely any head movement was disappointing but I loved how soft her skirt was and how toned her arms and legs are. Do a video next on DC Essentials lol! Loved Cheetah!
dc icons had serious potential but some of the articulation in the waist and core was messy imo. i don’t understand why people like them more than mcfarlane. he has done wonders for figures imo
This is what I don’t understand about those who just want DC to be a Marvel Legends clone, they literally were for the last 15 years and it all ended in failure. The 5" scale is kinda baffling personally, even if you believe all toys should scale with Hasbro (which I certainly don't), the industry is basically cut in half between 6" (Hasbro and all third party lines specifically designed to piggyback Hasbro ala Valaverse) and 7" (Mcfarlane, Neca, Super 7, DST, Masterverse, Storm Collectibles etc). To pick a third option was almost suicide before the word go. These are some nice figs and essentials were for the time, but they don’t hold up particularly well imho. Remember also that these were strictly collector figures not mass market retail, so they had the luxury of doing whatever characters they wanted at a higher price point and they still couldn't keep it going. Even Marvel Legends has to put out 100 Spider-man's and Iron Man's to keep the line going (and the stagnation of the Giant Man Haslab reveals their dwindling hardcore collector base). Since Todd singlehandedly with his own money resurrected DC Direct, I certainly wouldn’t be against Icons or Essentials continuing in some form, but the fact that the Btas and statues have continued but not these two probably speaks to what their actual sales were.
I had quite a few of the DC Icons figures: Aquaman Batman Deathstroke Flash Green Arrow Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) Harley Quinn Joker Superman Wonder Woman It kind of frustrated me. When they started doing less classic looks. When you had a almost complete Justice League. For example doing a new 52 or rebirth Wonder Woman. Thankfully, now I have most of those updated. By way of McFarlane DC Multiverse. Especially now, that they are releasing a Longbow Hunters Green Arrow. At this point, I just want a classic Deathstroke. I did pre-order Darkseid. Since I remember him being the boss in Justice League Task Force. Pretty sure I had the Super Nintendo version. Plus, it's a Jack Kirby character.
Icons was a true 6 inch line, which runs shorter than domestic 6 inch lines, like DCUC or Marvel Legends. Although, early in the Icons line, the scaling was a little off, with some characters being much smaller than they should, but it was at least fixed later in the line, unlike Multiverse, which is consistently all over the place. There also weren’t “bucks”, each one was a unique sculpt. Some may have reused parts, but there still wasn’t a buck system. But yeah, they didn’t sell well because of being a true 6 inch line, which didn’t mix with Marvel Legends, which, if I had to guess, was a non compete thing DC had with Mattel, who was making 6 inch figures that scaled with Marvel Legends. I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to DC Multiverse, like you said, they’re very different beasts. If anything, a more apt comparison for Icons would be DC Essentials, which replaced Icons, and then proceeded to sell worse
Great breakdown... Really agree with you on most points.. but it's not me comparing them it's others... I don't think good scale is all male figures being exactly the same size..which is another problem Essentials has ..👍💀
@@bonesandthenecrozoo Yeah, and you did a great job explaining why you shouldn't compare them. Essentials all essentially being the same figure with a different coat of paint really turned me off of the line. And what few female characters it had looked really bad, in my opinion
I actually like the scale of DC Icons. I don’t need all of my figures to be giants, lol. I’m really sad that the distribution was poor. I would’ve liked to have collected these figures back in 2018. Nowadays the prices I’ve seen for them are incredibly high. Which is understandable considering how rare and few there are.
Oh, nice topic! All of my DC Multiverse are opened but only 1 of 8 DC Icons have been opened. Bought then to open but a move prevented that. This video will help me decide if I should open them!
Hey mister bones like I've said a million times I only started collecting again because McFarland got the license and we got all these new sculpts I work 3 doors down from a comic book shop for years and didn't collect because I didn't like the figures I had the basics Batman Robin Aquaman Superman you know the Justice League other than that that was it. So again if it wasn't for Todd McFarlane I was not be collecting DC characters right now probably wouldn't be collecting anyting
Not a fan of McFarland figures. They look pretty bad and they can't pose dynamically. I was pretty excited to see those Icons but seeing how they are limited articulation wise then I'll just admire them from a distance.
Icons had its issues for sure but they looked better than any other dc line, they had amazing accessories, and the character selection was better than anything we have these days. If they had been a bit bigger and had better range in their articulation then I would give them the number one spot. I'd like to give it too todds dc multiverse but it just seems like for every good decision they implement in the line. They are making 3 other decisions that just make no sence. Someday I want to talk to todd. I have so many questions for him that I really want to understand.

I bought my loose Mattel Shipp Flash for $16 ..I was very happy...👍💀

Lol... yes Essentials is next .. orangutan arms .. at least they had long arms ..😆💀
I do think if that were in targets and Walmarts they would have faired better. I only saw them in comic shops.
Ya.... plus they were priced more than 6" or 7" figures...🤷♂️💀

Lol that Aquaman you show was the exact same one I got lol that dam lil hole in his head lol
😆😂
I collect Dc Icons, DC Direct, DC Essential and DC Mcfarlane to me all of them are great I really don’t care what people said I was late on DC Mattel
If a figure speaks to me I buy it... plain and simple...👍💀

Agree with your whole statement
Facts ..👍💀
I only picked up Icons Green Lantern and decided not to get any more. Still have it in the box. Great video👍🏻
They had a nice design...just so darn tiny...👍💀
I had quite a few of the DC Icons figures:
Aquaman
Batman
Deathstroke
Flash
Green Arrow
Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
Harley Quinn
Joker
Superman
Wonder Woman

I don’t mind 6 or 7 inches.I Ike mcfarlanes articulation and different sculpts for a lot of figures.
