Love this line! Great video. Remember the accessory packs? I wanted the second one, so of course, only the first one ever came out. Very cool pack, but all the accessories were for figures I didn't have or want. Pack #2 had li'l Starros, more stuff for Harley, a helmet of Nabu to tempt your figures, and Bat-Mite! How could it fail?! So glad they made Atomica to go with the Crime Syndicate line. She may not be the most important character ever, but she's one of the best Icons simply for the fact that she technically fits in with every other toyline. Worst thing about Icons ending was Essentials starting. Another reboot? and it's not even good? Icons was inconsistent, but giving everyone the same body was not the way to fix it.
I kept wavering about the accessory pack, but you're right the second one was definitely better! I have a decent amount of Essentials, but got a little turned off when Nightwing was looking eye to eye with Superman.
I got Flash, Batman, and Green Lantern. They were good figures, but ultimately the scale was just too small compared to what we were used to, and they just weren't as readily available at retail. My comic shops never got most of them, and they weren't really available anywhere else.
The only reason...literally THE ONLY reason the Icons line failed...was because of their insistence on that "true 6 inch" scale. Fans were not ready to commit to an entirely new scale after spending the better part of a decade by that point building up a strong representation of Legends and DCUC on their shelves. They made the definitive Static in 1/12 scale tho. Still holds up.
So true! I also didn't want to start a whole new line of figures in another scale not knowing if they'd ever produce many of the ones I'd want. I already have the vast majority of my most wanted Marvel (Legends) and DC (Universe Classics) characters I want. Many of the ones I'm missing are obscure characters they'll never make or ones that won't get made because they're doing modern versions. I only want Silver and Bronze Age characters. I've love to get the new classic Animal Man but he's out of scale.
Congrats on 300 episodes! The Super Sons 2-pack is worth it because I feel they'll never make another Jon Kent as a boy before they ruined him, and both kids fit into other lines because you can fudge the size easily.
I loved the kcons line but it also had one more flaw. The occasional DC Direct /Collectibles fragile plastic. But I agree with you. Man this line was awesome. And I agree, the cancelled wave would have been the positive tipping point. They should have leaned into classic designs. I still wish we had at least the next wave, a classic Wonder Woman and a classic J’onn. My wishlist also had Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang, Reverse Flash. Black Manta, Hawkman… sigh. I also wish I picked up the Doomsday set
A classic Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter are some glaring omissions. Yeah, I did make sure to mention some problems like the wings with Flash's boots and ears. DCC was great about replacing broken parts though!
I have Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Mr. Miracle, Green Arrow, and Black Adam from Icons. All great sculpts made from brittle plastic. I wanted Firestorm and Flash, but I waited too long. I like this line more than the new McFarlane. Congrats on 300 Jeff! I watch a lot of the ToyTubers and find your content fun and accessible. I look forward to watching the next 300! Cheers.
I think part of it was bad timing. The rapid decline of DC Universe Classics after switching to the subscription model and the launch of the New 52 left a lot of disenchanted DC fans in its wake. I know the true 6” scale was also a big issue, but if DC Icons had stuck by it, I think they would have won the fans over. Trying to upsize the figures midstream was a big mistake. I didn’t keep the later releases because they were out of scale with the first few waves. I’ll always love the ones I have though. I’ve got my DC Icons Justice League with Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Aquaman, and Atomica (she’s a good girl in my world). Even though it never actually existed in the comics, it’s my favorite JLA lineup in my collection.
There was a lot to love with these figures. Awesome sculpts, decent articulation, nice accessories. As a Marvel fan, this was the line that was going to FINALLY make me a DC collector. Sure, I had Mattel DC figures, but they were all variations of Superman (My favorite DC character since the 1977 movie). I also had the DC Direct New 52 Justice League 7 pack, but as awesome as they looked, they were pretty much statues. It was a real letdown when the DC Icons line was cancelled. I wanted to love McFarlane's DC Multiverse; I really tried, but the scale, the q.c. issues on some of the figures, the proportions, the dang diapers...smh, I just couldn't keep doing it. No shade at people who collect them and love them; I'm really happy if you're enjoying them. I'm holding out hope though that another toy manufacturer (Jada Toys, I'm looking at you) can get this license. Great video Jeff!
@LylesFigureFiles This is very true, and realistically, Hasbro has had quite a few missteps themselves, but I've given them a pass because I'm too invested. So yeah, I get the sentiment for McFarlane. He almost got me back with that Plastic Man wave though.
If I could travel back in time and tell DCDirect to make icons just a tiny bit bigger scale and fitting ML, we would be living in a whole different reality. Because from what I know original idea was to make ML scale line but something in production process went wrong with scale. It’s a Million dollar mistake if there was one.
@@LylesFigureFiles I don't even collect DC and I watched this. Grew up on Marvel and collect that. Do have a few DC things like a Dark Knight Batman and a Wonder Woman.
Thanks so much James! How'd you like that Doomsday pack? I quit on the line when they announced the cancellation of the SDCC reveals and skipped that one.
You know I have that Darksied and Justice league what I regret I was unable to afford all the other figures to come after those, I missed out on the Para-demons because I. Got that crime syndicate and didn’t need the McFarlane ones man I wish icons could get the license back or Jada pick it up I think they could do a good job.
Another issue I have with these figures and a major reason I'm not buying any is that they're mixing classic Silver and Bronze Age versions of characters with modern versions. I want consistency in my collection, so I want all of the figures to be Silver/Bronze Age versions. In this screen cap you have, some are classic versions, some modern. This mixing of eras turns me off totally.
I think a real problem was the New 52 didn't have much legacy and when Rebirth kicked off, all the New 52 designs were ditched. The classic costumes lasted for decades, which made/makes them so much more iconic.
This line is two decades old! I used to see them in my lcbs and you couldn't get me to buy one of those dc figs! They looked nice but basically statues. Wasn't until i the Swamp thing had some engineering that i got it😂❤
Dc icons excelled at making esthetically pleasing figures, even now the dc icons figures are infinitely better than 89% of hasbro and McFarlane figures in terms of esthetics, the deathstroke figure to this day is on of my favorites, they failed because they failed to update their articulation, the torso and head articulation were not great and it astonishes me that hasbro is using the torso articulation now but they’re articulation quickly became outdated
@@LylesFigureFiles the type McFarlane and Jada toys has is easily the best form of torso articulation, you and get more natural looking poses, if done right way more range of motion, doesn’t break the sculpt as much, and doesn’t have the problems of an ab crunch
I have a lot of those first DC figures and then Marvel was putting out better articulated figures and then when they started pumping them out they where coming to fast and too man and you couldn’t keep up and you didn’t know when they where coming out and when they finally got there act together putting out more articulation and decent paint applications as well as varing body shapes and sizes they lost there contract if the powers to be would have just hung in there a little longer they could have done great things if they where aloud to continue cause they where on the right track
@@LylesFigureFiles you know I saw her once at NY Comiccon but I wasn’t doing Legion of Doom yet so I passed on it , and I don’t like going to con’s any more 1) there to over crowded and that’s even on the Thursday and Sunday’s now, 2) I don’t like having to pay to get in to to spend money I just feel it’s greed and stupid now when I first started going to convention’s it was like a five 10 dollar fee to get in some you just walked in and started spending money now it’s buy a pass for the entire weekend and it’s like 90 to 150 dollars and kids are no longer free on Sundays so I’m done with conventions back to your original question I don’t know I walk in to a comic shop and some one is selling it second hand if I find on eBay for a decent price maybe I don’t like doing eBay scalping prices any more I let go now I hope so maybe McFarlane will do her I do like his monstress over sized figures.
I just got the Green Arrow and first thing I noticed, he was wayyyyyyy too short to mix with Marvel Legends, Same with black adam. I'm like not impressed with these.
Nobody wants to hear it but if you want amazing figures with the best paint, sculpts, and articulation then Hasbro has to make it. Mcfarlane never has and never will make a pinless, well articulated figure. The best Superman he ever made has single jointed arms. Look at invincible figures. They look like shit. One of the best animated series on right now and has garbage figures that break when you take them out of the package. If you want the best DC figures look no further then marvel legends squadron supreme. Best DC figures ever made.
I don't care much if figures are pinless or not, if I wanted something sleek and lineless I'd probably get a statue instead. Still, at this point I'd be fine if someone other than McFarlane got the DC license.
Man, I REALLY wish someone could make Invincible figures with great sculpts and articulation. Such a shame that massive universe with so many great characters ripe for figures doesn't have a line that can just crank out wave after wave of them. I think when I did the line hand off episode where I had to switch licenses with different companies I gave DC to Hasbro. They would be committed to getting all the different versions of the characters out for sure!

You've got a good haul of Icons.
I only have one DC Icons figure: Supergirl. By far the most beautiful female figure I own. Absolute perfection.
She did look good. What are your runners-up?
...this is what I wanted dc characters to be. 1:12 scale. So I could match them with my legends. Now it's all perspective shots and height fudging...
All about the perspectives unless you get MAFEX figures.

How were the figures in terms of posing and playing with?
I had fun moving them around. Once you got used to their articulation limitations they were very fun posing.
