I absolutely love what this song represents. When we hear a final song, see a final movie, product, landscape or ad... what you never see is where the final and polished product came from. This is a demo song and it's certainly nothing we'd ever hear on radio but rest assured, Mike already put a lot of work into this at the time of recording. I recall the hours I spent back in the days when I created music myself.. So.. what I mean to say is to appreciate not only the work, but also realize that whatever you are working on right now and maybe uncertain about just remember: This is here is how one of Linkin Park's most successful songs sounded like after Mike already spent a lot of time creating it. What made the song great was two things: Dedication and team-work but the invisible factor is the process behind it. It takes time, effort and persistence! So keep going! Whatever you do! Nothing great has ever been built in just one day and even if you found an example I'm going to tell you it took a lot of training and effort to get to the point where you can build something great in just one day. There's no cheating.

Breaking the habit is the most heartbreakingly beautiful song I've heard in my life. It's my favorite song of all time. And normally, I hate listening to covers of this song. Because no human being ever would be capable of capturing the pain and melancholy of this song as well as Chester did. For me, he'd always be the most inimitable and greatest vocalist of all time.
That being said, this is the only non Chester version of the song I can ever get on board with. Simply because this was its origin. This was how it was conceived. And really it's Mike that we have to thank for giving the world this song although Chester immortalised it in his voice.
This song always overwhelms me. Even though it's my favorite song in the world, I don't or rather can't listen to it often cuz it gets to me.

What is really precious in that record is that it allows to track down the full history of creating Breaking The Habit. Lots of years before LP released the instrumental demo of the song, the demo was called Drawing (released on one of LPU discs), and the initial version of Breaking The Habit was, suprisingly, a pure breakbeat, even breakcore track, that resembled more of Aphex Twin rather than Linkin Park. Original demo was overloaded with breaks, glitches, noises etc., and it worked great as an electronic instrumental track, but there was no room for the vocals in the arrangement.
In this demo (that one - with Mike's demo vocals) we can already hear as the guys partially disassembled the "Drawing" demo, removing most of the complex synthy, breaky, glitchy parts, to give some space for the vocals, but in the breakdown we're still hearing the original breakbeat drums. And in the final version all of the breaks that were left from the Drawing and that are present in this demo were just pushed back in the mix, working along with the groove, without stealing all the attention of the listener.
But what bothers me the most is that - in an interview to Kerrang magazine, dedicated to the release of Meteora, Chester told that Mike came with all the lyrics, and Chester referred to them as "something I always wanted to write, but I never could". So in that interview (and couple of more of that era) Chester referred to Breaking The Habit as to Mike's song, written about the dark stuff Chester told him about himself and about the way Chester felt. But in here - in Mike's demo - we hear completely different lyrics. Yes, there are some lines, that made it to the final version (like "...memories consume..." or "I don't know what's worth fighting for..."), but they are placed in completely different places and they work in here in a completely different context.
As the result it turns out, that... As for me - it seems like Mike was writing a song about overcoming the darkness inside. But when Chester came in to the process - he obviously reworked the lyrics, that received a completely different context. Like... while original Mike's demo was about overcoming, the final version of Breaking The Habit became a song about writing a suicide note (literally). And seems like Chester did not wanted to tell the audience and even to the band, to his mates, his friends, about what Breaking The Habit in fact meant for him, that's why he always told that he didn't do anything to the lyrics, that all the lyrics were done by Mike.
So, looking to the sequence "Drawing - Mike's vocal demo - Breaking The Habit", it turns out for me, that... that in late 90s early 2000s Chester was already to put an end to all of it, and to... you know what I mean - but managed to cope with it and to hide it from the others. But in some moment he couldn't coupe with it anymore. You know what I mean. I don't want to speak it out loud. So in that context, Breaking The Habit itself feels like Chester's desperate call for help, rather than just a great song. And that makes Breaking The Habit much more emotionally loaded than it was interpeted in 2003-2004.
Conclusion: Talinda was right - depression doesn't have a face or a mood. And someone's suicidal thoughts can wave around a person for years, and even the closest ones may be unaware of it. So the conclusion is - take care of each others. Take care for real. Depression is a much more dangerous thing than we can expect. And if you feel something resembling to suicidal thoughts, when you feel that there's something wrong inside of you, inside of your mind, your soul - share it with people near to you, don't hide it. Do not hide it, even if you think you're strong enough to overcome depression - yes, you may be strong, but depression is a thing that always can outsmart you, and strike back right when you expect the least. Don't hide your feelings and take care of each other.
    Peace.

It's the whole thing of "I'm not sure if my voice is prepared for this" combined with "this isn't even the final product but I still need some framework for the vocals"... I feel that; more-so on the first part but I still feel that. I really found myself in Mike's shoes listening to this.
