      Mel, the 3 most copied guitars ever are the Les Paul, Strat & Martin. All the axes from PRS, Kramer, Schecter, Ibanez & ESP all have that 'Strat' body. Any time you invent something new, copies always follow. I would love to shake Leo's hand and tell him how he's inspired my playing and what an icon he is. To me, he's right up there with CFMartin and Orville Gibson-the Thomas Edisons of guitars...

    I think it looks and sounds great, people get conditioned to expecting things to be a certain way and when it isn't it causes consternation and offence. The facts tell the story, these guitars are selling out fast. I also find it fascinating that Paul Reed Smith is so much nicer and more compliant in this interview than he is with Captain Lee Anderton, I wonder why? Is it because Lee plays his Les Paul more than the PRS that Paul gave him?

People need to be prepared when they are going to interview these "type" of people, know to whom they're going to work. Don't get me wrong...Lee is good, but he needs to be more carefull to not be let ashame by these kind of people by preparing more himself. God bless people.

    Late to the discussion on this video, just saw a 2017 video where they took a Squier Bullet Strat, a Fender Champion 40 & a Klon-like pedal & clean boost and sounded like John Mayer for about 350 British pounds. Pretty much what I assembled without researching anything John Mayer when I found a used $ 25 2005 Squier Bullet SSS HT, a $ 80 Pyle 60W open back combo & a $ 25 Mosky Silver Horse Klon. Essentially a similar budget John Mayer sound-alike, only I have $ 130 US into all of that.
    I say this because I wanted to see what the big commotion was all about in January 2022 & the new PRS SE Silver Sky John Mayer Strat for $ 850 US. The PRS SE is a Poplar body that if I were to consider the PRS SE today, I can save $ 300-500 buying a Sterling Cutlass SSS CT30 or CT50 in 2022. So while the SE may be an affordable Silver Sky, the Sterling by Music Man has been making the Poplar body Strat for a few years now. Unless handling one is that vastly different, I don't see anything that will influence me to to go with PRS. BTW, never did like the bird inlays. I also prefer the headstock shape & 4/2 tuners of the Ernie Ball Music Man/Sterling to the 3/3 PRS. Oddly PRS & EVH headstock shapes are essentially the same Meh to me. Not that I'm against PRS, I do like the standard strings PRS makes in the 9.5 set.

    I think the Silver Sky is a great thing, and I'm really hoping that it helps rehabilitate the 7.25" radius fretboard in the eyes of guitarists, because I find it the most comfortable of all the common radii. The only thing about this guitar I don't like so much is the 25.5" scale length, which is integral to the sound of a Strat, but I find myself preferring a 24" scale or even a 22.72" scale, as a personal preference due to the fact that I use non-standard tunings that are higher.
    My ideal guitar doesn't exist, but I love PRS guitars.

  • @mitcharney1

    What's NOT DIFFERENT about this guitar and the Fender Stratocaster are THE 2 BASIC elements. The body wood which is Alder for both companies and a bolt on Rosewood on Maple finger board. According to earlier YT videos by Paul and John Mayer the neck shape and the pickups were patterned from 2 of Johns vintage Strats. So now there are 4 of the Basic elements taken directly from Fender. The 7- 1/4" radius would have been less of an issue if John had only stated that it was his choice of neck radius and left it there. If Paul had just said we are making the guitar neck specs the way John want's it...because it's "The John Mayer Model" and left it at that it would have been an easier intro. The problem for some people is that in videos like this, as well as earlier videos, it sounds as if Paul feels like he has to sell it. (2). All the tens of thousands of previous PRS guitars Paul put his name on HAD a FLATTER radius neck and each of those models will continue to have a flatter neck. Paul knew that the majority of players preferred an easier bending flatter neck and that's why for 30 years he made them that way. PRS has made great guitars and the Company is successful. It's just a little tough to chew when it's being pushed as "innovative" when cosmetic changes have NOTHING to do with the sound of the guitar. All of Mayer's big hits were recorded on a Fender John Mayer guitar. Did those songs have a tremendous sound? Did Stevie Ray have a tremendous tone/sound? Clapton? Hendrix? Blackmore? Beck? Malmsteen? Guy? Gilmore? Knopfler? Eric Johnson? Amazing the tone and hundreds of major hit songs these guys have pulled out of a guitar without the new "innovations"! No matter who makes the guitar, the guitar is only as good as the man that is playing it. John Mayer would sound great on any of the aforementioned 'Signature Player Models'. All those great players would sound tremendous playing any of the other models because they worked hard at the craft and spent countless hours playing. A guitar does not define the player, the player defines the guitar.

    The thing is, ultimately, any production guitar is one guy's idealised version of the trade-offs he is willing to make, and if those work for you, that's great, and if they don't, then there are other companies with other versions of the trade-offs they are willing to make.

    PRS isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. They are just improving the vehicle that the wheels are on. I for one think they have done a phenomenal job. Anyone who has played and collected a multitude of models and makes can tell you a thousand different things they could’ve, should’ve improved. This is where Paul and his crew fills the void. If Fender and Gibson was alive today, they would feel honored that someone has devoted his life to producing a better version of the original. So it’s not just about trying to copy someone else’s design but loving the design enough to impart his creativity and improvement on it.

    "Retooled.... retooled..."
    I love PRS guitars. Quite refined.
    However... I think the negative response to this model might have something to do with JM leaving Fender only to partner with PRS in making a Strat copy.
    It's just an odd move that hints that JM really can't get away from the Strat.
    It would be like Michael Jordan ditching Nike only to have Adidas make Air Jordan clones.
    IDK. The whole thing is just a little odd.

    • @alexwoods5132
      @alexwoods5132 3 года назад +1

      He left, not because the strat was the problem, but because the people at Fender were not going to afford him the opportunity to do with the strat what he wanted to do. All the “retooling” JM wanted- Fender folks wouldn’t allow him to have it. So he went to a company that would give him that ability.

    If there are no legal ramifications - and as far as we know they will be none - there should be no outrage. This is a PRS' take on the Strat classic ('63-'64) tone & feel. Man, those pickups sound amazing. Kudos to PRS for nailing that.
    I get the aesthetics controversy, but that comes down to personal taste. The fact of the matter is that the Silver Sky sounds great, and for the money they are asking, well you be the judge.
    That being said, the marketing part & the announcement that have been rather a flop. I don't think presenting an exceptionally well crafted Strat-inspired signature model as a product of 2.5 years of development is a sensible approach, at least in the eye of the public. I am sure that tenure is fully justified with the internals and the ergonomics; those should have been prominently highlighted as they are the pinnacle of the new axe.
    At the end of the day, they will sell like cupcakes, and for all the good reasons.

      That could be because a number of video comparisons, blind tests and stray comments have indicated the PRS he gave Lee didn’t really work out. It was a “gift”, but any expectation Lee would start using it in videos to cover Les Paul territory appears to have been disappointed. This model will no doubt sell a truckload. But it won’t replace the real Strat. And its entirely appropriate that it should be a signature model for Mayer. What this guitar is to a Strat, he is to his precursors.

    Guess what, John Mayer already did a signature Strat with Fender. $1500 cheaper than the PRS. Most who watched the comparison prefer the Fender. If you're a PRS fan you'll buy that one, if there are any gains it would only really be that the neck is different. Personally, you can get exactly what you want with a partscaster and using bridges with vintage equivalent steel parts and you're there. I hate the necks on all the strats I've played except back in 67 when I had an original strat. The neck on it was baseball bat, so I got baseball strat neck from Allparts, screwed it on my old awful '57 reissue from the 90's and voila, my dream strat.

      Nope wrong, I like strats but I'm not fussed about copys, the fact is the headstock looks shit, the angle on the cutaway looks miss placed and the flatness of the top just makes it look cheap.
      It sounds nice though.

    • @Williamstanway
      @Williamstanway 6 лет назад +1

      I don't deny any of that it's obvious why it's sellong, but although subjective to personal opinion if you think that a badly designed out of proportion object is pretty... then yes it's your opinion but it shows you have no taste.

      @Williamstanway 6 лет назад +2

      I'm not stuck in my ways, I love all 's type copys like suhr and numerous others.
      I love all guitars I have no issues with PRS making a strat copy, but the fact of the matter is it's out of proportion and the carve and paint finish looks cheap, it's a bad piece of design that's a fact and easy to see if you have any class or taste.

    • @Williamstanway
      @Williamstanway 6 лет назад +2

      When I said not fussed about copys I literally meant I don't mind copys, it was in answer to your "die hard Fender fans" comment and I was saying I'm not.

    I think the "controversy is really down to the way PRS is seen as one of the big three iconic guitar brands, along with Gibson and Fender. The three have a few variations in styles, like tele/strat or sg/les paul, but each company has their own identity encompassing these body options.
    Most of the other companies are copiers, big/small, high end/low end, and that's fine, but for one of these big three iconic brands to mimic the visual style of one of the other two feels like they are betraying their own identity and muddying the choices. This problem is exactly because, as brands, they are so iconic.
    It doesn't really bother me. It looks like a nice guitar but probably not good enough to justify the cost for me (Plus my partner pressured me into promising to never buy another guitar... Plus I'm broke).

    People don’t like Paul. I don’t get why? Can you imagine asking Gibson or Fender’s CEO about the design of any guitar. He didn’t just copy the strat, he made some improvements. 2K for an American made signature guitar, it’s priced fairly in the market. He’s passionate about guitar making and it shows in his specs and designs. Fender isn’t going out of business because of this guitar. I don’t have a problem with it.

    Special thanks to Leo Fender and Ted McCarty for PRS guitars. There is nothing new under the sun...at least since 1954. 95% of guitars since then are either copies of the Les Paul, The Telecaster or the Strat. The fact that PRS takes pride that it took him 2 years to "develop this guitar" is laughable. It took Leo a few months to build the 1st Strat. I'm sure this guitar plays like a dream. Please don't make believe that it's a PRS design.

      Huh? No, it does not. If it was choking out, you would not hear the lower note still ringing when he releases the bend. Go back and listen again. The caveat of course, is how high is the action set? One has to actually try one to have a final verdict I would think. For what it's worth, J.M. prefers a very low action, and on the several vids on YT of him playing the guitar, it's obviously not fretting out. So, that would seem to bode well...

    The PRS McCarty line has become more and more like the Les Paul - though obviously, PRS can make them a lot better than Gibson can these days. But this has even included abandoning features that made PRS guitars better than Gibson, such as going to a Tune-o-Matic style two-piece bridge.
    Any complaints from the peanut galleries? Nope.
    And then PRS makes a really great Strat copy: Oh, such wailing and gnashing of teeth!

    "63.5?" ???? Ummm, there is NO difference between 63 Strat pickups and 64 Strat pickups. Both were within the Leo Fender era, and both were hand wound heavy formvar and there was no consistency in how many winds were used. The same diameters of wire were used, it didn't change. 1965 is when CBS bought Leo out and they changed the pickups to plain enamel wire , machine guided traverse winding, and grey bottom flatwork. Why do these guys need to make up magical stories and hype to sell guitars or pickups? 63.5, c'mon. Looks like a Strat sounds like a Strat, its a STRAT.

    Let's say it how it is,shall we?
    John Mayer wants a Strat,but since he and Fender don't like each other anymore,he can't play one in public,so he asked PRS to make a Strat copy for him,that's it.
    Paul Reed Smith and his marketing department can use as many euphemisms like ''inspired by a vintage guitar'' and ''innovations'' etc. as they like,in the end it's a Strat copy,Paul knows it,John knows it,everybody knows it.And it's a very overpriced one to boot.John Suhr & Tom Anderson have done also ridiculously overpriced Strat copies,so it's nothing new.
    The baffling thing is,Leo Fender designed this type of guitar,to be a cheap instrument for working musicians and you can literally build a ''Partcaster'' for a fraction of the money,which will sound and play as good as any of these ''boutique Strat-copies''.

    • @MagnusGuldbrandsen
      @MagnusGuldbrandsen 6 лет назад +8

      I went to a John Mayer show about a year ago, he played the PRS for a couple of songs and he played a bunch of Stratocasters... The man plays what he wants to play.
      And the reason PRS can't say Fender or Stratocaster is due to legal reasons... It's exactly why Suhr calls their start-copy a "Classic Pro" or why many boutique builders calls it an S-Type.
      It sound idiotic when they do it, but hey - what are you gonna do? :)

    • @greekfreak1980
      @greekfreak1980 6 лет назад +3

      I'm just amused,how people still fall for all this marketing-BS,not only from PRS but form other ''boutique brands'' that make Strat copies and Fender himself.
      Get a solid alder or swamp ash body,put a good neck,quality hardware and electronics on it and plug it into a good amp,that's it.You don't need to spend 3 grand on a Suhr,which is made out of basswood,the cheapest of all woods of all things or 2,5 grand on this ugly thing here or 4 grand on a Fender ''master build''.
      Hell,Jeff Healey's main guitar was a modded,MIJ Squier and SRV had bought an entire batch of Tokai Strat copies,when he visited Japan,in the early 80's.Not to mention EVH's legendary ''Frankenstrat'' was build out of parts,that cost Eddie less then 250 USD,now they sell replicas for several thousand USD.

    • @Davivd2

      Any guitar that you pay out the ass for because of it's brand is a rip off. I have a Washburn with Seymour Duncan pickups and Grover tuners that I payed $200 bucks for with a practice amp. It sounds and feels great. To get the same level of quality out of a Fender, a Gibson, or even a PRS would cost me around $1000 at least.

    • @davestephens8033
      @davestephens8033 6 лет назад +1

      But it says PRS on it, so its worth a lot! Lets get real, the original strats were hand made, not perfectly machined parts, no $500 spit shine finish, pickups wound randomly by women in a hot metal building. They're not Mercedes guitars, the finish wore off real fast, they wouldn't stay in tune. Go to Warmoth, buy the parts you want, put some good pickups in it, heavy formvar hand wound, wire them the way they were wired in the 50's, set it up right and it'll go toe to toe with this PRS wall furniture that real working musicians just aren't going to buy.
